Experiences Of Group Therapies In Community Settings From The Perspective Of People Given A Diagnosis Of “Personality Disorder” – A Systematic Literature Review And Thematic Synthesis, Roxanne Denny

School of Psychology Theses

There is increasing research into group therapies and group treatments are widely offered in services for people with a diagnosis of personality disorder. This review aims to explore service user experiences of psychological treatments offered in groups for the diagnosis of personality disorder in community settings. A systematic search of six databases yielded 16 qualitative research papers for inclusion in this review. Studies were critically appraised and analysed using thematic synthesis. The thematic synthesis identified three major themes: “expectations and reality of groups”, “barriers and facilitators” and “impact of groups”. Recommendations inform the establishment and facilitation of group treatments.

Toward The Next Generation Of Research In Adult Literacy Instruction, Rebecca Clark-Stallkamp, Barbara B. Lockee

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

In November 2019, the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) from 2017 (Institute of Education Sciences [IES], 2019) depicted no significant change in the concerning status of adult literacy in the US. More than 52% of adults between 16 and 45 scored below functionally literate levels. While shortcomings are attributed to various factors such as high attrition rates in program, ill-conceived policy planning, and more, significant focus is placed on the impact of effective instruction. The study reviews core cognitive component theory experimentation and instructional intervention research in adult literacy to explain contributions and limitations in current …

A Comparative Study Of Teacher-Student Verbal Interaction In Primary School Mathematics Classroom Teachers --Taking Novice Teachers And Expert Teachers As Examples, Qiong Zhang, Ying Wang

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

Teacher-student verbal interaction is a key method of encouraging active learning and participation in classroom activities. It significantly improves the effectiveness of teaching and learning in primary mathematics. Teachers at different developmental stages show obvious behavioral differences in the process of classroom interaction with students, and an in-depth analysis of these differences can help promote the professional growth of novice teachers. Based on the Classroom Smart Evaluation System (CSMS), this study compares and analyzes the teacher-student interaction behaviors of novice and expert teachers based on two co-curricular lessons on multiplication of 5 in second-grade primary mathematics. It was found that …

For the research methodology, this study employs a combination of rating scales, namely, the satisfaction with life scale, the …

The Influence Of Personal Values On Environmental Sustainability In Business Events In Asia, Man Fung, Stephanie Lee Jan 2024

The Influence Of Personal Values On Environmental Sustainability In Business Events In Asia, Man Fung, Stephanie Lee

Department of Hospitality and Business Management

Environmental sustainability is no longer optional in today’s world of growing environmental and climate change concerns. Although environmental sustainability has been extensively discussed, little is known about how personal values impact environmental sustainability in the context of business events. Evidence shows that personal values influence pro-environmental behaviour. Event organisers who prioritise environmental sustainability are likely to implement environmental sustainability practices in their events. However, in the business events sector in Asia, there is a low awareness of environmental sustainability, which is closely linked to personal values. This chapter aims to emphasise the role of personal values in promoting environmental sustainability …

Open Hunting Season: Black Bodies As A Threatened Species, Mark C. Grafenreed Jan 2024

Open Hunting Season: Black Bodies As A Threatened Species, Mark C. Grafenreed

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

Tracing the Endangered Species Act of 1973 provides striking parallels with the historical, legal, and cultural aspects of bondage mapped upon Black bodies. The United States Congress promulgated the Endangered Species Act to protect and conserve threatened and endangered wildlife species. However, this gives rise to a serious moral dilemma and cognitive dissonance in that nearly 1,500 wildlife species benefit from the Endangered Species Act's protections. At the same time, Black bodies disproportionately suffer without similar federal protections. Congress has strengthened the Endangered Species Act's force through four amendments since its inception, even while there have been mounting threats to …

Exploring The Implementations Of Hidden Disability Assistance Program In Australian Airports, Aliyu Mohammed Tata, Dr Matthew Ebbatson, Prof Christopher Fluke

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

A small but increasing number of airports have implemented a hidden disability assistance program (HDAP) and issued sunflower lanyards to allow airport staff to recognize their travelers who have a hidden disability (HD) and may require special needs transiting through airport terminals. Airports employees are required to become aware of the challenges that travelers with an HD may face to provide appropriate support to meet their needs. A vital part of the overall program is the provision of training to airport ground staff so they may render appropriate and effective assistance. Several studies have investigated the challenges airline travelers with …

Scientific Context, Suicide Prevention, And The Second Amendment After Bruen, Eric Ruben Jan 2024

Scientific Context, Suicide Prevention, And The Second Amendment After Bruen, Eric Ruben

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

The Supreme Court declared in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen that modern gun laws must be “consistent with this Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation” to survive Second Amendment challenges. Scholarship has shown how this test of historical analogy presents difficulties because of how technological, legal, and social change has shaped policy over the centuries. This Article is the first to assess Bruen as it applies to suicide- prevention laws, and, in doing so, illuminates another form of change that complicates Bruen’s implementation: scientific progress.

As this Article shows, early generations of Americans fundamentally misunderstood mental …

Reconciling Domestic Violence Protections And The Second Amendment, Natalie Nanasi

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

In March of 2023, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals held that individuals subject to domestic violence protective orders could not be required to give up their guns. The decision was the first of a federal court to overturn a firearm regulation pursuant to New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, a 2022 Supreme Court opinion that created a new standard for determining the constitutionality of gun restrictions. After Bruen, only laws that are “consistent with this Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation” pass constitutional muster.

The Fifth’s Circuit decision in U.S. v. Rahimi, which …

Time And Retribution, Meghan J. Ryan

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Time is missing from discussions on the theory of retribution. A colossal body of scholarship has been devoted to exploring the theory of retribution, or 'just deserts," but much less has attempted to translate this theory into practice, explaining how to determine an actual offender's desert in real life. The limited scholarship on this topic touches on who might best assess an offender's desert. For example, should a judge, a juror, or the public itself be making these desert decisions? But there is also a temporal aspect to this decision making that has thus far largely eluded exploration: When should …

The Quick And The Dead: The Uses And Misuses Of History In Abortion Jurisprudence, Joanna L. Grossman, Lawrence M. Friedman

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

In 1860, in Nevada County, California, a young woman, Clara Davis, died in her home. She had given birth, secretly, during the night. The baby had been spirited away by a man named Henry McCracken, who also lived in the house, and who was presumably the father of the child. The facts strongly suggested that the child had been born prematurely, as a result of an induced abortion. McCracken had applied to a physician for abortion medication, which he administered to Clara, supposedly for back pains, but in reality "knowingly ... to procure an abortion." This qualitative study seeks to explore the potential for disrupting white supremacist ideologies among white working-class individuals through heightened awareness of whiteness. Grounded in Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Critical whiteness Studies (CwS), the research aims to expose these ideologies by fostering critical reflection and anti-racist behaviours. The study employs a comparative approach …
