The flipped classroom instructional approach gained popularity after the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly disrupted language instruction. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a full online flipped classroom instructional model to enhance students’ meeting skills and their engagement. The model consisted of two lessons: group meeting skills and writing the minutes of meetings. The participants comprised 48 third-year undergraduate engineering students from a public university in Thailand. The study utilized the KW#4 principle to compare average scores of passing students in formative and summative assessments, and to analyze pre-test and post-test scores, aiming to evaluate the model's impact on …

Jack Daniel's And The Unfulfilled Promise Of Trademark Use, Stacey Dogan, Jessica Silbey
Jack Daniel's And The Unfulfilled Promise Of Trademark Use, Stacey Dogan, Jessica Silbey
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
The article examines the Supreme Court's decision in Jack Daniel's v. VIP Products and its implications for the use of trademarks in artistic and expressive works. The Court's ruling established a "trademark use" doctrine, distinguishing between uses of trademarks as a designation of source for goods and non-trademark, expressive uses. While the decision does not overturn the Rogers v. Grimaldi test, it creates uncertainty in applying Rogers to expressive works, leading to inconsistent lower court decisions and threatening First Amendment protections for creative uses of trademarks.

Current research on the academic writing performance of EFL students has identified a number of robust factors. These factors include self-efficacy, metacognition, and a growth mindset. In the area of academic writing performance, however, there is a paucity of research combining these factors into a single study. In light of this, the purpose of this research was to conduct a structural model evaluation to investigate the relationships between self-efficacy, metacognition, a growth mindset, and academic writing performance. In this research, academic writing performance was situated within the context of EFL undergraduate thesis writing. The respondents of this study were 464 …

Extracting Social Network Model Parameters From Social Science Literature, Isaac Batts
Extracting Social Network Model Parameters From Social Science Literature, Isaac Batts
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
When looking at computer modeling of social situations, much of the social science literature does not include ready-to-use statistics or parameters to be included in a social model. I explore studies related to speaking about racism (and other forms of bias), and interventions designed to diminish the occurrence of biased behavior, and use those readings to synthesize plausible parameters for a social computer model.

Integrating Art And Ai: Evaluating The Educational Impact Of Ai Tools In Digital Art History Learning, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This study delves into the burgeoning intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and art history education, an area that has been relatively unexplored. The research focuses on how AI art generators impact learning outcomes in art history for both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Ancient Art courses, covering eras from ancient Mesopotamia to the fall of Rome. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study analyzes AI-generated artworks, reflective essays, and survey responses to assess how these generative tools influence students’ comprehension, engagement, and creative interpretation of historical artworks. The study reveals that the use of AI tools in art history not …

Exploring The Nexus Between European Competition Law And Democratic Society: A Case Of Political Microtargeting, Viktorija Morozovaite, Anna Gerbrandy
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
The nexus between European competition law and democracy has been widely researched. Against the background of the ongoing digital transition and the power of big technology companies, this contribution aims to advance the debate by focusing on a specific example of political microtargeting and its effects on the (digital) public sphere. It explores the potential role of European competition law in ameliorating these emergent harms. The argument is developed by showing that the role of big technology companies in political microtargeting processes extends beyond passive facilitators. By following financial incentives and treating citizens as consumers, these companies, in effect, reduce …

Hesychasm And The Jesus Prayer: Spiritual Formation In An Ecumenical World – Exploring The Practice Of The Eastern Orthodox Jesus Prayer With The Evangelical Protestant Tradition, Craig Francis Bosman
Theses
The question that forms the heart of this research is: “Can the Jesus Prayer establish roots to develop and flourish, and be accepted as a new, legitimate practice in Evangelicalism?” To begin answering, the practice will be explored within its Eastern Orthodox context focusing on the Jesus Prayers’ biblical roots, early development, and official acceptance within Orthodoxy. Then the Evangelical movement will be surveyed to gain an understanding of its identity from a sociological and theological perspective with special attention on its soteriological framework, customary spiritual disciplines, and general attitudes toward mysticism (defined as direct experience of God through apophatic, …

Exploring The Experiences Of A South Asian Client And Facilitators Of Men's Behaviour Change Programs In Western Australia, Madhuri Mathisen
Theses
This study explores the experiences of male perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) attending men’s behaviour change programs in Western Australia from the perspective of program facilitators and a South Asian client. Informed by social and contextual constructionism with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study examines the experience of 10 mixed culture facilitators who worked with South Asian intimate partner violence perpetrators in men’s behaviour change programs and one South Asian client of an intervention. The participants’ experiences were contextualised through a semi-structured interview. The facilitators’ findings revealed that South Asian clients demonstrated patriarchal beliefs with a victim-blaming tendency and …
The Myth Of Post-Graduate Employment: How Ableism And A Minority-Rights Approach To Equality Creates Barriers To Employment For University Graduates With Disability, Veronica Nelson
Theses
Despite continued growth in the number of people with disability completing university studies in Australia, this has not been reflected with an increase in employment participation post-graduation. In comparison with non-disabled graduates, university graduates with disability have lower rates of employment participation and higher levels of underemployment. This research explores the reasons for this disadvantage from the perspective of the university graduates with disability, using a qualitative methodological approach to gain new insights and to prioritise their voice, their lived experience, and their expertise. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with university graduates with disability who had graduated from 2009 onwards. The …
The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of An Online Program For Emergency Nurses Caring For Victims Of Interpersonal Violence: A Mixed Methods Study, Melanie Brown
Theses
Forensic nursing encompasses a range of skills that can be utilised across healthcare services and legal services. The delivery of forensic nursing care covers a vast number of roles and practice areas that can improve patient outcome, including the care of victims of interpersonal violence who often face multiple barriers in achieving a positive medicolegal outcome. A nurse’s ability to identify a potential victim and initiate forensic nursing care in an emergency care setting can positively influence the patient’s engagement with support services and the justice system. Despite this, a review of the Australian literature has identified inconsistencies in forensic …
The Call For Faa Regulation Change: Why Individuals With Adhd And Adhd Medication Prescriptions Should Be Permitted To Become Pilots, Clare Kelley
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
This paper delves into the pressing need for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to reconsider its regulations concerning individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and those prescribed ADHD medications who aspire to become pilots. The current FAA regulations exhibit a rigid and outdated understanding of ADHD and its treatment, leading to the exclusion of a growing number of individuals from the aviation industry. Through an analysis of studies demonstrating the safety and efficacy of ADHD medications in improving driving performance and reducing accident risks, this paper advocates for a shift in the FAA's stance. Societal factors, such as the increasing prevalence …

From Suspension To Mass Incarceration: Punishment Of Student With Special Needs And The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Bailey Ellicott
From Suspension To Mass Incarceration: Punishment Of Student With Special Needs And The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Bailey Ellicott
Law Student Publications
Since their inception in the late 1980s, zero-tolerance policies have been a cornerstone of American school discipline. Passed by legislators with the intent of protecting school children, these policies have disparately upended the education of marginalized students. School discipline of vulnerable students often paves the way to juvenile incarceration, which in turn exponentially increases the likelihood of adult incarceration. Moreover, students with disabilities, especially students of color with learning disabilities, are often physically pushed out of their classrooms through suspensions and other harsh disciplinary policies. This is only made worse by the presence of law enforcement in schools, who treat …
The Necessity Of Restorative Justice Within Prisons, Sarah J. Pietrowski
The Necessity Of Restorative Justice Within Prisons, Sarah J. Pietrowski
Law Student Publications
In the era of mass incarceration, it is vital to reexamine the prison system to identify not only its weaknesses, but its successes. Successes in correctional systems are often measured by a reduction in recidivism rates, and in states where restorative justice practices have been implemented in prisons, recidivism rates have exhibited a significant decrease, affirming the necessity of restorative justice practices in prisons. Additionally, restorative justice not only helps victims of crime feel that their voices are heard and that the one who harmed them will experience personal growth, but it is preferred by the majority of victims as …
Stopping The Cycle Of Abuse Before It Starts: An Evaluation Of Virginia's Domestic Violence Primary Prevention Model In Schools, Amanda Palini
Stopping The Cycle Of Abuse Before It Starts: An Evaluation Of Virginia's Domestic Violence Primary Prevention Model In Schools, Amanda Palini
Law Student Publications
In 1994 the United States was faced with a domestic violence epidemic that led Congress to pass the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The Act was passed to respond to the needs of victims, particularly women, who are at the highest risk of victimization in crimes such as domestic violence and sexual assault. While domestic violence has been recognized as an important public health problem, most services provided are focused on after-the-fact interventions rather than prevention.
Many states, including Virginia, have since created domestic violence prevention programs, added preventative requirements to their state code, and tasked their respective Departments of …

Optimal Test Length: How Many Pages Do I Need To Grade (Or Even Write)?
Optimal Test Length: How Many Pages Do I Need To Grade (Or Even Write)?
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
This paper examines how test length affects average scores and standard deviations in exam grading. After writing (unnecessarily) long exams, we test if decreasing the number of pages changes the average and standard deviation relative to longer exams. When testing exams four to six pages long, we find that exams above four pages do not seem to add any precision to the averages or standard deviations. Additionally, we find that a three-page exam has the same average and standard deviation, but exams with fewer than three pages change the distribution of student grades, making it harder to distinguish student quality.
Note-Taking It Back To The Old School: Note-Taking & Student Outcomes
Note-Taking It Back To The Old School: Note-Taking & Student Outcomes
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
Recent research has suggested that students lack effective note-taking skills, but note-taking may improve student learning. In order to promote meaningful learning, a small investment in note-taking instruction may be a valuable use of scarce classroom time. We implement a randomized experiment to assess the effect of note-taking instruction on student note quality in the principles of microeconomics classroom. We compare note quality of students who received note-taking guidance to those who did not. We find that students who received guidance have significantly better quality notes than those who did not.

Does Blended Learning Improve Student Grades? A Quasi-Experimental Study
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
This study evaluates the impact of blended learning on student performance using a differences-in-differences method. In a controlled experiment with two classes, each having two sections, all sections initially used face-to-face teaching. After midterm 1, one section from each class transitioned to blended learning. The differences-in differences method analyzed students' performance on both midterms, with midterm 2 covering material taught through blended learning in the treatment group. Results indicate a non-significant increase in midterm 2 grades for the treatment group.

How Business Schools Can Address Gender Gap In The Finance Profession: A Mission-Driven Undergraduate Student-Managed Investment Program
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
This paper proposes a way to address gender gap in the finance profession through the Investment Challenge program. The survey results reveal that the perception toward pursuing a career in Finance among female high school students positively changes after completing the Investment Challenge. After participating in the Investment Challenge program, the survey respondents have expressed a significantly stronger belief that they can succeed professionally if they choose a career in Finance, and this result is more pronounced among female high school students. The proposed program offers a proactive solution to the gender gap challenge in finance at its roots.
Learning About Data Sources Through The Dataset Presentation
Learning About Data Sources Through The Dataset Presentation
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
Economics has become an increasingly data-driven, empirical discipline. Alongside this, the advantages of undergraduate research have become more appreciated. These trends merge with students employing empirical techniques in undergraduate research. An active literature has developed on how to implement this. This paper addresses a potential hold-up for undergraduates that has received little attention: how to acquaint students with major data sources. To accomplish this, we provide an assignment (prompt, list of data sources by difficulty, and grading rubric) in the form of a short, data-driven presentation designed to have students learn, acquire, and work with a publicly available dataset.
