Does Fiction Make Us More Empathetic? Psychological, Literary, And Philosophical Perspectives, Cooper Sherman
Does Fiction Make Us More Empathetic? Psychological, Literary, And Philosophical Perspectives, Cooper Sherman
Research Days Posters 2024
Avid readers often praise fiction for helping them understand others’ perspectives, and considerable research suggests an empirical basis for this connection. However, research on fiction’s interpersonal effects generally deals with sub-components of empathy (theory of mind, out-group bias, emotional empathy, etc), yielding disorganized results. It remains unclear what the overarching pattern is, and what fiction we ought to read to better understand others. This project contributes to this field by synthesizing existing research in a podcast format. Through interviews with cognitive scientists, philosophers, and literary scholars, it asks what central patterns can be derived from the empirical data and which …

The Significance Of Toys And Games On Ancient Mediterranean And Modern Gender, Societal Values And Human Development, Leila Brolly
Research Days Posters 2024
Play is an essential component of physical, cognitive, and social development, and the toys and games children use have a developmental influence. In order to adequately foster children’s growth, it is vital that they engage with toys encouraging the highest quality play. This research analyzes texts about play activities and objects in Ancient Greece and Rome, where play was considered instrumental in educating the young about their future roles. In addition, this research examines modern studies about children’s play, involving the lenses of gender and psychological play theories. It also compares the differences in developmental benefits of toys between genders …

Applying Samhsa Trauma-Informed Principles To A New Graduate Nurse Residency Program For Retention, Charman Harper
Applying Samhsa Trauma-Informed Principles To A New Graduate Nurse Residency Program For Retention, Charman Harper
Nursing
The inability to retain new graduate nurses contributes to the nursing shortage. With an estimated cost of over $60,000 to train each new graduate nurse, the inability to retain new nurses financially burdens the healthcare industry (McClain et al., 2022). Current studies show that many new graduate nurses leave their jobs after one year (McClain et al., 2022). Without needed change, it will produce stress, anxiety, poor work performance, and decreased job satisfaction, impacting retention rates (McClain et al., 2022). In addition to the traditional new graduate residency program, incorporating the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Trauma-informed …

Impact Of Nursing Student-Staff Nurse Interactions In Clinical Settings: A Literature Review, Elizabeth Joffe
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Nursing students receive education and experience from clinicals where they are supported by clinical instructors. These instructors rely on staff nurses to provide much of the hands-on education, thus causing the staff nurses to have an influence on the students. The aim of literature review is to understand current research and findings in regard to the impact staff nurses have on nursing students while in the clinical learning environment. This literature review utilized multiple online databases. Searches were conducted on articles from 2016 to 2024 with specific key terms such as student-staff nurse relationships, clinical learning, belonging, incivility, and positive …

Migrant Vulnerability To Human Trafficking: A Decade In Review, Elizabeth A. Solis
Migrant Vulnerability To Human Trafficking: A Decade In Review, Elizabeth A. Solis
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Despite the establishment of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) in 2000, the state and prevalence of human trafficking in the United States has greatly increased. While information and legislation exist, it still remains an under-researched and under-evaluated issue. This study looks through the enacted human trafficking federal legislation over the last decade to track whether migrant vulnerability to human trafficking has been further addressed with the evolution of the issue within the country. To provide a relevant analysis, this study will examine human trafficking legislation through the years of 2013-2023 and will focus on the main research question of …

The Effects Of Alcohol On Crash Avoidance Reaction Time In A Driving Simulator Task In Humans, Aishwarya Vasudevan
The Effects Of Alcohol On Crash Avoidance Reaction Time In A Driving Simulator Task In Humans, Aishwarya Vasudevan
Wayne State University Theses
AIM 1: Alcohol-impaired driving continues to be a significant cause of car crash injuries and deaths. The blood alcohol concentration (BAC) cut-off level for drunk driving is 0.08% in Michigan, and is estimated that lowering this cut-off to 0.05%would save 500–800 lives every year in the US alone. We used a portable virtual reality (VR)-based driving simulator to demonstrate the effects of alcohol at BAC concentrations 0.02-0.08%, grouped into 0.01% increments, on driving performance, specifically Crash Avoidance Reaction Time (CART), i.e., the time (in msec) required to initiate a steering avoidance response. We found that BAC concentrations as low as …
Age-Related Longitudinal Changes In Gray Matter Microstructure, Jessica Hayes
Age-Related Longitudinal Changes In Gray Matter Microstructure, Jessica Hayes
Wayne State University Theses
Measures of the brain’s microstructure may be more sensitive markers of aging than macrostructural measures. However, it remains unclear exactly how gray matter microstructure changes during aging and how this relates to changes in macrostructure. The present study evaluated how neurite density, orientation dispersion, and gray matter volume changed over a three-year period in a sample of healthy older adults. The role of age in modifying structural change within the hippocampus, precuneus, and rostral anterior cingulate cortex was also considered. Repeated measures general linear models additionally evaluated whether degree of change in microstructure between the first two measurement occasions modified …
Plasma Neurofilament Light As A Biomarker Of Neurodegeneration And Memory Function In Older Adults, Youjin Jung
Plasma Neurofilament Light As A Biomarker Of Neurodegeneration And Memory Function In Older Adults, Youjin Jung
Wayne State University Dissertations
Plasma neurofilament light (NfL) is a promising biomarker for monitoring and predicting cognitive function and neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the field still needs a better understanding of what plasma NfL reflects about neurodegenerative and cognitive changes occurring in AD, especially in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, for the optimized use of plasma NfL as a biomarker for AD for clinical and research purposes. Therefore, here I investigated how NfL is associated with memory function, the functional connectivity of the default mode network, and the microstructural properties of white matter and gray matter regions vulnerable to Alzheimer’s pathologies …

Financial Autonomy And Happiness In College Students: Can They Coexist?, Jordyn Gerwig
Financial Autonomy And Happiness In College Students: Can They Coexist?, Jordyn Gerwig
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Prior research and theory suggest that happiness is often associated with charitable expenses and feelings of autonomy. The present research examines how autonomy influences the happiness experiences of participants when spending money either charitably or on themselves. Participants completed the research online in an hour setting. Participants were asked to imagine situations where they have the ability to spend money freely, or where they first must seek advice or consult before making spending decisions. For half of each of these participants, they were directed to consider spending money on themselves, whereas the other participants were directed to consider spending money …

Effects Of Physical Activity Intervention On Reducing Neck And Upper Extremity Pain Intensity For Female Office Computer Workers, Peng Cheng Sung, Tiffany Chiu, Yunsen Wang
Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The computer usage among office workers had increased tremendously in past recent years and the surge in computer usage has created a surge in work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) on arm, neck, and shoulder. For prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in relation to gender and age, females had higher risk and prevalence of upper limb complaints and the prevalence of WRMSDs generally increases with age. Systematic review studies had reported effectiveness of various physical activity (PA) interventions on improvements of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders (UEMSDs) or neck pain for office workers. However, the degree of adherence of PA interventions with WHO guidelines …

Applying Girls' Studies To Contemporary Theatre And New Play Development, Sophia Menconi
Applying Girls' Studies To Contemporary Theatre And New Play Development, Sophia Menconi
Playwriting (MFA) Theses
Girls’ Studies is a relatively new academic field characterized by its focus on the complexity of girlhood experiences and understanding girl as a unique social identity separate from the notion of future women. In bringing Girls' Studies theory into the work of theatre scholarship and new play development, I present a framework for the interdisciplinary field of Girls' Theatre Studies. Chapter One is an exploration of girlhood presentations in contemporary theatre through a postfeminist lens. Examining the theatrical manifestations of the "female victim-hero” in contemporary presentations of girlhood, I argue that girl audiences are able to feel with and through …

Analysis Of Current Treatment In Addressing Head-Directed Self-Injurious Behavior, Reid Wieczorek
Schultz-Werth Award Papers
The many negative effects of brain damage have been well studied, and some populations are at a higher risk for this type of injury, such as athletes and soldiers. In response, research has led to the development of increased head protection solutions, such as helmets. However, this is not the case for all at-risk populations of head trauma, specifically individuals who engage in headdirected self-injurious behavior. This study was conducted to assess the ways in which BCBAs treat clients who engage in this behavior. The results yielded information on some key client demographics and different treatment strategies used to intervene …
