Safety First: The Hidden Curriculum Of Whiteness In Race-Conscious Professional Learning, James Noonan, Ashley Carey, Hilary Lustick, Peter Piazza Jan 2024

Safety First: The Hidden Curriculum Of Whiteness In Race-Conscious Professional Learning, James Noonan, Ashley Carey, Hilary Lustick, Peter Piazza

Education Faculty Publications

Applying the analytic lens of critical whiteness, we examine the relationship between facilitation structures and the quality of racial dialogue in educator professional development. We draw on data from a five-session virtual ‘antiracist reading group’ in a rapidly diversifying U.S. district, convened and facilitated by a White district leader. Observed discussions tended towards the superficial and did little to challenge participants’ existing worldviews. We argue that the leader’s facilitation decisions characterised a ‘hidden curriculum’ of safety and comfort that inhibited participants’ development. These moves were further shaped by and reified persistent manifestations of whiteness. We offer implications for the facilitation …

Perfectionism Across Adolescence, W. Justin Dyer Jan 2024

Perfectionism Across Adolescence, W. Justin Dyer

BYU Studies

As a sixteen-year- old on my first date, I had such a nervous tightness in my stomach that, at one point, I ran to the bathroom to throw up. I’d always been somewhat nervous, but it had never bothered me much before. Yet from that time on through my teenage years, any time there was something new happening, I would inevitably have to throw up.

Stephen Burnett Versus The Eight Witnesses An Exercise In Mature Historical Thinking, Neal Rappleye, Stephen O. Smoot Jan 2024

Stephen Burnett Versus The Eight Witnesses An Exercise In Mature Historical Thinking, Neal Rappleye, Stephen O. Smoot

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

This article critically examines the credibility of the claims made by Stephen Burnett about the experience of the Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon. A disaffected Latter-day Saint who lost his faith in Joseph Smith after the failure of the Kirtland Safety Society in 1837, Burnett wrote a scathing letter in early 1838 in which he claimed he heard Martin Harris admit that the Eight Witnesses did not physically see and handle the gold plates as claimed in their printed testimony. This article argues that Burnett is not a credible source for accurately understanding the experience of the Eight …

6. More Is Less?: Using Generative Ai For Idea Generation And Diversification In Early Writing Processes, Franziska Tsufim, Lainie Pomerleau

Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions

As writing teachers, we are strong proponents of process writing. At the same time, we are aware that early process work, especially in a group setting, can be time consuming and anxiety-inducing. Students may also self-censor when sharing work with peers especially if they are not confident in their ideas. Drawing on the process of nominal, electronic brainstorming, we created two different prompts that allowed students to incorporate generative Al into their idea generation process. This first activity improves the efficiency of individual idea generation, while the second exercise helps increase student confidence in their ideas in collaborative brainstorming situations. …

Implementation Of A Nonpharmacological Sleep Bundle In A Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Kristen Talvacchia Jan 2024

Implementation Of A Nonpharmacological Sleep Bundle In A Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Kristen Talvacchia

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Critically ill patients admitted to the ICU frequently experience sleep disturbances. Sleep can be promoted in the ICU by adjusting the patient's environment to lessen noise, light, and patient care interruptions. Given the potential impact of sleep disturbances in both the acute and long-term, promoting quality sleep should be considered an essential component of providing care to patients admitted to the ICU. This DNP project aimed to identify whether implementing a nonpharmacological sleep bundle in a SICU improved patients' perceived sleep quality, as evidenced by their Richards Campbell Sleep Questionnaire scores. The Donabedian model is the theoretical framework that guided …

Experiencing Burnout: John Henryism, Gender Role Conflict, And Anxiety Among Incarcerated Black Men, Jardin Dogan, Danelle Stevens-Watkins, Brittany Miller-Roenigk, Christopher K. Marshburn, Myles Moody

Psychology Faculty Publications

At the intersection of race and gender, Black men encounter conflicting and often stress-inducing gender norms. Research suggests Black men may utilize John Henryism Active Coping (JHAC), a culturally-relevant strategy to manage stress. However, little is known about how incarcerated Black men cope with gender role conflict (GRC) and resulting psychological distress. To better understand stressors and coping strategies among Black male prisoners, the current study examined the relationships between GRC, anxiety, and JHAC among N = 193 incarcerated Black men nearing community reentry. Hierarchical linear regression results showed length of incarceration, GRC, and anxiety were all negatively associated with …

Can Temporary Signs Remind Who Should Yield At Uncontrolled Intersections? – A Driving Simulator Study, Kirti Mahajan, Saumik Sakib Bin Masud, Grace Savoie, Alexandra Kondyli

Kentucky Transportation Center Presentations

Background: A generic right of way (ROW) rule at uncontrolled intersections is to yield to the vehicle from the right, if not stated otherwise in the right-hand side driving countries such as the US. However, this rule is greatly neglected in practice, resulting in unsafe situations. This study investigated the effectiveness of using two proposed temporary yield signs: “Yield to Traffic on right” (Sign1_YT) and “Yield to Person on right” (Sign2_YP), to remind the drivers of ROW rule at uncontrolled intersections. Method: A driving simulator experiment was conducted with 20 drivers (aged 18-65 years), 50% males, recording observations for 198 …

Caffeine is a popular ergogenic aid that has a plethora of evidence highlighting its positive effects. A Google Scholar search using the keywords “caffeine” and “exercise” yields over 200,000 results, emphasizing the extensive research on this topic. However, despite the vast amount of available data, it is intriguing that uncertainties persist regarding the effectiveness and safety of caffeine. These include but are not limited to: 1. Does caffeine dehydrate you at rest? 2. Does caffeine dehydrate you during exercise? 3. Does caffeine promote the loss of body fat? 4. Does habitual caffeine consumption influence the performance response to acute caffeine …

During the late 18th through the mid-19th centuries, the Commonwealth of Kentucky saw significant movement of self-emancipated people seeking freedom from bondage. Often referred to as “runaways” or “fugitive slaves,” in historical texts, self-emancipated people defined freedom in many ways. These migrations were widely documented in newspaper advertisements known as fugitive slave advertisements and runaway ads in local newspapers published throughout the state. Access to these materials (often buried in databases or on microform) has been problematic at best. Enter the Self Emancipated and Enslaved People in Kentucky (SEEK) Project, a partnership between faculty in the University of Kentucky Libraries …

Healthy Aging Among Older Thai Adults With Passive And Active Music Participation : A Qualitative Study, Panicha Ponprasit, Arunya Tuicomepee, Juthatip Wiwattanapantuwong

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Music participation is a beneficial activity for seniors. This qualitative study examined the experiences of sixteen healthy older adults in Thailand who engaged in some way with music. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews. The findings revealed four themes. The first theme, “Music as Leisure vs. Identity,” highlights music's dual role in offering enjoyment and shaping one identity. The second theme, “Music's Role in Social Connections,” explores how engagement with music fosters relationships and builds a sense of community. The third theme, “Music for Well-being,” highlights music's contributions to health and well-being. The last theme “Music as Lifelong Self-Improvement …

Collective Memory, Urban Regeneration And Conservation Of Historical Sites – Chaharbagh Street, Isfahan City, Iran, Mehdi Haghighatbin, Sara Saghafi Moghaddam, Steffen Nijhuis

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This study aims to present a regeneration process for historical spaces based on the notion of collective memory. We argue for the necessity of simultaneously studying conservation and rehabilitation policies for restoring and continuing the collective memory of historical spaces. This approach can effectively preserve and shape the collective memory of historical spaces by focusing on preservation and valuing the landscape as a major key between place and humans. The historical ChaharBagh Avenue from the Safavid era in Isfahan serves as a case study. Over time, the social and cultural significance and value of ChaharBagh Avenue as a historical public …

De-Politicizing And Dis-Remembering The White Terror Through Gothic : The Grand Narrative And Embarrassed Politics Of Collective Commemoration In The Movie Detention, Min-Tser Lin

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article aims to read Taiwan’s 2019 cinematic horror sensation, Detention, as part of the nation’s effort to construct a grand narrative of collective commemoration, as it tries to streamline its multiple conflicting memories about the Nationalist government’s violent political suppressions of suspected dissidents during the mid-20th century, commonly called the White Terror. For this nationalist narrative to follow the Gothic scenario of progression from repression to liberation, embarrassing elements of the past, especially many White Terror victims’ sympathy with the Chinese Communist Party, must be de-politicized and dis-remembered. The movie adopts a ploy that can be called “isomorphic …

The Image Rhetoric And Narrative Aesthetics Of “Teasing And Irony” In Contemporary Chinese Art, Yongliang Liu, Sone Simatrang Jan 2024

The Image Rhetoric And Narrative Aesthetics Of “Teasing And Irony” In Contemporary Chinese Art, Yongliang Liu, Sone Simatrang

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The “scar art” of the 1980s mainly came from reflection on and criticism of the entire society. In 1990s China, influenced by both Western modernism and postmodernism, a phenomenon of “Teasing and Irony” emerged in contemporary Chinese art. At this time, contemporary art began to present a state of deconstruction from poetry, novels, film and television, art, performance art, conceptual art and so on, to people’s real lives. Deconstruction of authority and of classics became the pursuit of the times. The emergence of this cultural trend of Teasing and Irony involved a game of power and discourse. There were also …

Looking Into The Eyes Of Aswang : Alyx Arumpac’S Aswang (2019) As A “Gothumentary” Of The Philippine War On Drugs, Jan Marvin A. Goh Jan 2024

Looking Into The Eyes Of Aswang : Alyx Arumpac’S Aswang (2019) As A “Gothumentary” Of The Philippine War On Drugs, Jan Marvin A. Goh

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Alyx Ayn Arumpac’s Aswang (2019) navigates an intimate terrain of the Philippine “war on drugs” during Rodrigo Duterte’s administration by documenting first-hand narratives from its various affected victims. The film challenges documentary norms as it entangles the reality of extrajudicial killings with the folkloric spectre of the “aswang.” Aswang’s (2019) narratives seek to temporarily disrupt perceptions of reality and expose the underbelly of Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, as spearheaded by the program “Oplan Tokhang,” within the dark urban spaces of Manila. By employing horror as an allegorical medium, Aswang (2019) blurs the boundaries between reality and folklore, which urges its viewers …

The Acquisition Of Passives By Thai Preschoolers, Kitima Indrambarya Jan 2024

The Acquisition Of Passives By Thai Preschoolers, Kitima Indrambarya

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study investigates how pre-school Thai children comprehend Thai short and long passives with adversative and non-adversative and action and psychological verbs. The results show that preschool children did not comprehend passives well, primarily because of the thematic role reversal in the subjects of passives and actives. Action verbs are acquired earlier and better than psychological verbs. Unlike previous studies of other languages, Thai children comprehend long passives better than short passives with most verb types.

Anaphoric Expressions In Thai Narratives : A Corpus Study On Accessibility And Distributional Tendency, Nimit Kumwapee, Nattanun Chanchaochai Jan 2024

Anaphoric Expressions In Thai Narratives : A Corpus Study On Accessibility And Distributional Tendency, Nimit Kumwapee, Nattanun Chanchaochai

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study examines the relationship between Thai anaphoric expressions and their antecedents’ Accessibility, analyzing 3,453 expressions from Thai-Zlatev Corpus (Zlatev and Yangklang 2001), Aakanee Website (Aakanee, “Thai Recordings”) and Thai Folktale Database (Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre, “Folktales”). Grounded in Ariel’s Accessibility Theory (1988, 1990), which asserts that referring expressions are universally arranged on an Accessibility scale but marking systems vary by language, we propose an Accessibility Marking Scale for Thai anaphoric expressions, informed by the factors of Distance, Competition, Saliency and Unity. Some anaphoric expressions showed no significant differences in mean Accessibility, leading them to share ranks. Our …

Collaborative Creac Drafting: Co-Creating An Example In Context, Julie E. Zink

Saint Louis University Law Journal

The quickest way to a student’s mind is through engagement. As legal writing professors, we can assign pages on how to organize an analysis, provide helpful examples, and orally describe the process. However, some students need a more hands-on approach. In this article, I explain my process of actively engaging students to draft their first CREAC together. By collaboratively working together to assemble this ungraded CREAC over a series of classes, the students develop an understanding of how to properly organize their analysis of a discrete issue based on the assigned facts and law. For each part of the CREAC …

Second-Tier Marriages, Jeremiah A. Ho Jan 2024

Second-Tier Marriages, Jeremiah A. Ho

Saint Louis University Law Journal

This Essay interrogates the reasoning behind the retrenchment toward LGBTQ rights progress that has taken place since marriage equality. With marriage rights for same-sex couples now “on the books,” the Supreme Court’s treatment of same-sex couples in both Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Comm’n and 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis reveals the status quo’s hesitancy to recognize same-sex relationships on equal footing. Retrenchment, however, only describes the moment itself; it alludes to but offers no comprehensive or satisfying theory that identifies the motives behind the moves. This Essay theorizes from within the context of the Supreme Court’s LGBTQ …

"I See Your True Colors Shining Through": How Judge Attributes Affect Outcomes In Transgender Rights Cases, Jordan Jones Jan 2024

"I See Your True Colors Shining Through": How Judge Attributes Affect Outcomes In Transgender Rights Cases, Jordan Jones

Araneum: Richmond Journal of American & Global Affairs

This study examines how U.S. District Court judge attributes influence case outcomes in transgender rights lawsuits. The judge attribute model says that judges are influenced by outside factors, which are the key independent variables in this study. These include judge ideology, gender, and age. There is variation in the categories that transgender cases fall under, so different case types are tested. Additionally, there is a concurring region and religiosity variable. This variable stems from data that certain regions are more religious than others and that religion may have an influence on the viewpoints of transgender people. The dependent variable is …

Why Do We Vote?: An Analytical And Data-Centered Approach To The Impact Of Infrastructure Quality On Voter Turnout In Virginia Counties, Alex F. Broening Jan 2024

Why Do We Vote?: An Analytical And Data-Centered Approach To The Impact Of Infrastructure Quality On Voter Turnout In Virginia Counties, Alex F. Broening

Araneum: Richmond Journal of American & Global Affairs

Everyday political discourse centers around the direction of voting far more than the choice to vote itself, despite low turnout rates in the United States overall, and especially in local and non-presidential elections. No existing model provides a complete explanation of the reasons and influences that cause individuals to participate in politics by casting a ballot, and the literature is especially fractured with regards to issue-specific activation of voters. This work expands on previous issue-focused studies by performing turnout analyses for Virginia counties alongside geographic analysis of infrastructure quality and access. The findings suggest that the quality of infrastructure has …
