Gender In The Making Of The Constitution: Proposals For A Feminist Inquiry Into Indian Constitutional History, Achyut Chetan Jan 2024

Gender In The Making Of The Constitution: Proposals For A Feminist Inquiry Into Indian Constitutional History, Achyut Chetan

National Law School Journal

A feminist inquiry into the framing of the Indian Constitution must retrieve and see the interventions of the women members of the Constituent Assembly for what they historically represent, namely, a feminist authorial voice that was developed over a period of time by the pre-Independence women’s movement in India. For a proper understanding of this voice, we must understand the gendered character of the Constituent Assembly, its architecture, its procedures, the dynamics of the gendered relations among its members, and above all, the performative aspects of the debates. This inquiry must also investigate the language employed by the members and …

Implementation Of A Non-Pharmacological Cognitive Stimulation Therapeutic Activities Protocol As A Delirium Prevention Method For Adults, Jada Hieb

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Background/Purpose: Delirium is a complex clinical syndrome comprising a constellation of symptoms, including acute onset, inattention, altered level of consciousness, and disorganized thinking or cognitive dysfunction. Delirium is a common complication often unrecognized, expensive, and preventable. This project's focus was further exploring non-pharmacological delirium prevention strategies (NDPS).
Methods: A NDPS program using a therapeutic activity book (TAB) was implemented in a Midwestern acute care hospital measuring the impact on the number of positive delirium screens, the number of delirium diagnoses, and hospital length of stay (LOS).
Results: A causative relationship or association between the TAB and outcomes could not be …

Impact Of Evidence-Based Interventions On Nurse Burnout Among Ambulatory Care Nurses, Haley M. Lupher

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Background: The physical and emotional demands of the nursing profession often cause increased stress and burnout in nurses. If burnout is not addressed, the negative consequences of burnout are perpetuated by one another. Evidence-based interventions, such as meditation, yoga, and physical activity can help reduce nurse burnout.
Local Problem: This project was completed at an ambulatory dermatology clinic that sees approximately 300 patients a day. In recent years, this department has noticed increased nurse turnover and low nurse morale.
Methods: A convenience sample from approximately 30 nurses was utilized. Burnout was measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory for Medical Personnel …

Evaluation Of Information Visualization In Digital Intelligence Product, Dejan Ulcej, Anja Podlesek Jan 2024

Evaluation Of Information Visualization In Digital Intelligence Product, Dejan Ulcej, Anja Podlesek

Journal of Strategic Security

Digital technology has impacted how strategic intelligence products are designed and distributed to political security decisionmakers. Information visualization helps improve the processing of intelligence information. This experimental study investigated whether a prototype digital intelligence report that uses visuals is processed more efficiently and results in a better user experience than a printed intelligence product that contains primarily text. A sample of 72 participants working as decisionmakers in a private company was divided into two equal groups. One group received the digital version of the report, and the other received the printed version. The time it took to read the report, …

Social Work Faculty Publications

Many older adults living with HIV face unique challenges, including comorbidities, loneliness, and isolation. This community-academic partnered study elicited viewpoints from older adults living with HIV about the characteristics of a digital environment (“Virtual Village”) to combat against loneliness and isolation. We utilized Choice-Based Conjoint Analyses to determine preferred attributes of a Virtual Village. We also conducted focus groups and interviews with older adults living with HIV and used an iterative, data-driven approach to systematically identify emergent themes. Participants (N = 82) were aged 50–82 years and racially/ethnically diverse. The majority were men (78%), gay (66%), and lived with …

Matching Markets And Labor Monopsony: A Comment On The Priest/Roth Debateeric A. Posner, Eric A. Posner Jan 2024

Matching Markets And Labor Monopsony: A Comment On The Priest/Roth Debateeric A. Posner, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In a neglected but prescient article, George Priest argued that the “unraveling” of markets for medical residents and judicial clerks resulted from the monopsony power of employers (a cartel in the first case, the government in the second). Because wages were largely fixed, early offers and acceptances of employment became an efficient form of nonprice competition—and efforts to solve the problem of unraveling through market design merely reinforced monopsony power. In a reply, Alvin Roth—the leading figure in the market design literature, who was instrumental in perfecting the design of the medical residency matching program—argued that Priest was wrong to …

Labor Market Trap, Eric A. Posner Jan 2024

Labor Market Trap, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Some products, notably but not only platforms, increase in value for users as the number of other users increases. These interaction or network effects can result in “product market traps” (Bursztyn et al., 2023) where people who use the product would be better off if they all stopped using it and switched to another product, but cannot because of coordination problems. A parallel but overlooked phenomenon is the labor market trap, where employees would be better off if they collectively left an employer, job, or profession, but cannot because of the difficulty of coordination. Product market and labor market traps …

Warsaw Uprising Of 1944, Vanessa K. Gusciora Jan 2024

Warsaw Uprising Of 1944, Vanessa K. Gusciora

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 was a major World War II operation by the Polish resistance Home Army (Armia Krajowa) to liberate Warsaw from Nazi German occupation. It began on August 1, 1944, and lasted 63 days, as the poorly equipped resistance fought against well-armed German forces. The Soviet Red Army, stationed across the Vistula River, offered no significant aid, leaving the insurgents isolated. The uprising was brutally suppressed, resulting in approximately 200,000 Polish civilian and combatant deaths. Warsaw was left in ruins, and the city’s population was forcibly expelled. Despite its tragic outcome, the uprising symbolized Polish resistance and …

Historical Analogy And The Role Morality Of Reason-Giving, Darrell Miller Jan 2024

Historical Analogy And The Role Morality Of Reason-Giving, Darrell Miller

Articles

The Supreme Court has turned ever more to analogical reasoning from history and tradition to decide significant matters of public policy. Nowhere is this phenomenon more evident than in the Court’s 2022 decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen.

The Court’s crafting of a Second Amendment test that turns almost entirely on the strength of analogies—and on a topic of such intense public salience—has thrust analogical reasoning to the forefront of judicial and academic debate. While many have questioned the workability of Bruen’s focus on historical analogs, this Essay is less concerned about the pragmatics of …

The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Huq Jan 2024

The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Huq

Articles

The Supreme Court relies increasingly on anticlassification rules to implement the Constitution’s various commands of evenhanded state treatment. These rules direct attention to whether an instance of a forbidden classification is present on the face of a challenged law. They contain two necessary steps. First, a court defines a general category of impermissible terms. Second, a court ascertains whether an instance of the category is found in enacted text—so triggering the familiar strict scrutiny analysis. So defined, anticlassification rules now dominate equal protection, free speech, “dormant” Commerce Clause, and even free exercise jurisprudence. The Roberts Court celebrates these doctrinal tests …

Technology, Tradition, And “The Terror Of The People”, Darrell Miller, Alexandra Filindra, Noah Kaplan Jan 2024

Technology, Tradition, And “The Terror Of The People”, Darrell Miller, Alexandra Filindra, Noah Kaplan

Articles

In New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen, the Supreme Court man- dated a text, history, tradition, and analogy–only approach to Second Amendment cases.

No longer can policymakers rely on empirical data alone to carry their litigation burden. Now such data must conform to a still-emerging “historical tradition of fire- arm regulation” to meet constitutional muster. Some despair that reams of data, careful experiments, and rigorous statistical analyses no longer have any relevance to the gun debate.

But those that claim that Bruen signals the end of empirically grounded policy solutions badly misread the opinion. Empirical studies can …

Imputing Unreported Hate Crimes Using Google Search Data, Aziz Huq, Dhammika Dharmapala Jan 2024

Imputing Unreported Hate Crimes Using Google Search Data, Aziz Huq, Dhammika Dharmapala

Articles

U.S. law requires the Attorney General to collect data on hate crime victimization from states and municipalities, but states and localities are under no obligation to cooperate by gathering or sharing information. Data production hence varies considerably across jurisdictions. This paper addresses the ensuing “missing data” problem by imputing unreported hate crimes using Google search rates for a racial epithet. It uses two alternative benchmarks for which jurisdictions more effectively collect hate crime data: all states that were not part of the erstwhile Confederacy, and those states with statutory provisions relating to hate crime reporting. We regress rates of racially-motivated …

Examining The Role Of Artificial Intelligence (Ai) In Transforming Print Journalism In Uganda., Robert Mukasa

Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation

This study provides an analysis of the current state of artificial intelligence adoption in two privately funded print media houses in Uganda: The Observer and Daily Monitor." The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into journalism has been touted as a transformative force with several advantages and disadvantages, including improvements in workflow efficiency, content accuracy, and audience engagement. Despite this potential, the adoption of AI in Ugandan print journalism has been slow, due to challenges such as limited access to technological resources and a lack of AI literacy among journalists. Using the Technology Acceptance Model as a guiding framework, the study …

Assistant, Parrot, Or Colonizing Loudspeaker? Chatgpt Metaphors For Developing Critical Ai Literacies, Anuj Gupta, Yasser Atef, Anna Mills, Maha Bali

Faculty Journal Articles

This study explores how discussing metaphors for AI can help build awareness of the frames that shape our understanding of AI systems, particularly large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. Given the pressing need to teach “critical AI literacy”, discussion of metaphor provides an opportunity for inquiry and dialogue with space for nuance, playfulness, and critique. Using a collaborative autoethnographic methodology, we analyzed metaphors from a range of sources, and reflected on them individually according to seven questions, then met and discussed our interpretations. We then analyzed how our reflections contributed to the three kinds of literacies delineated in Selber’s multiliteracies …
