Waterproofing: A Translation And Analysis Of The Works Of Mikhail Zoshchenko, Brendan Mcmahon

Theses & ETDs

In this work I give a cursory examination as to the metaphysical and existential strains underlying Zoshchenko's works. I aim to look into the idea of newly created modes of being and the necessities of being in a newly formed context by examining the unique style and content of Zoshchenko's work. Following this are a selection of nine translated short works by Mikhail Zoshchenko

Exploring The Use Of Magnets As A Form Of Shark Deterrent In Recreational Fisheries, Michael Pertler Jan 2024

Exploring The Use Of Magnets As A Form Of Shark Deterrent In Recreational Fisheries, Michael Pertler

Theses & ETDs

Recreational and commercial fisheries are responsible for a large quantity of elasmobranch (sharks, skates, and rays) deaths annually. A significant portion of this mortality is the result of bycatch, the unintentional capture of unwanted species while targeting a different species. Specifically, in hook and line fisheries, sharks are often caught as bycatch when they are subjected to baited lines or lines that have already caught a fish (e.g. a sport fish that is actively fighting on the line). As apex predators, these hunters are driven by food reward and cannot discern the difference between a sport fish caught on a …

Cracked Reality: The Theater Of Chaos And Accessibility In Academia: Building A More Inclusive And Less Intimidating Environment, Remy Katz Jan 2024

Cracked Reality: The Theater Of Chaos And Accessibility In Academia: Building A More Inclusive And Less Intimidating Environment, Remy Katz

Theses & ETDs

Absurdist humor and horror is the only way to survive in the nonsensical world. Situational comedy, irony, and the macabre; this is the essence of the world of spontaneity. My work is fueled by the need to provoke unsettling emotions, leaving audiences to sit and digest feelings of discomfort and joy in the catharsis of humor. I mean, what’s more funny than watching someone have a mental breakdown? Like, come on, you’re not special, all of us are freaks. SO, I’m a bit of a freak. I like building on ideas as I produce art, feeding my emotions into all …

Youth Mental Health In Occupied Palestinian Territories, Ayah Saleh Jan 2024

Youth Mental Health In Occupied Palestinian Territories, Ayah Saleh

Theses & ETDs

Despite the pervasive presence of occupation and its potential ramifications on mental health, a notable gap in research exists concerning the specific impact of Israel’s occupation on Palestinian youth. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, this study identifies key determinants of mental health and examines their manifestation within the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). Drawing upon established frameworks and empirical evidence, the research explores how factors such as violence, restricted movement, food and water insecurity, and inadequate sanitary infrastructure intersect to shape the mental well-being of Palestinian youth under occupation. For each of these major features of occupation, this thesis …

Fidgeting And Attention To Self/Other Narratives: An Eeg Study, Alphonse Engels Jan 2024

Fidgeting And Attention To Self/Other Narratives: An Eeg Study, Alphonse Engels

Theses & ETDs

Though fidgeting is widespread, its purpose is not yet known. Fidgeting has been proposed to be a method of regulating sensory input, a method of releasing excess energy, or a strategy to reduce stress. Of particular interest has been the interaction between fidgeting and the processes of attention and memory. As fidgeting tends to occur in environments which necessitate focused attention and later recall of details, it is important to understand what fidgeting may do to help or harm attention and memory. Previous studies have established a mixed relationship between measures of attention, memory, and fidgeting, with a somewhat negative …

Emotions And Autism: Exploring Gender Differences In Alexithymia In Adults With Autistic Traits, Mia Reyna Jan 2024

Emotions And Autism: Exploring Gender Differences In Alexithymia In Adults With Autistic Traits, Mia Reyna

Theses & ETDs

The purpose of this research is to highlight gender differences in the experience of alexithymia that may contribute to our understanding of the different autism phenotypes. Alexithymia is a neuropsychological phenomenon characterized by difficulty recognizing and describing one’s emotions. Alexithymia is present in about 10% of the general population (Linden et al. 1995; Salminen et al. 1999), but about 50-65% of the autistic population (Berthoz and Hill 2005; Hill et al. 2004; Samson et al. 2012). In the current study, I investigated gender differences in the facets of alexithymia experienced by adults with autistic traits by analyzing responses to an …

Habitat Utilization Patterns Of Semi-Free-Ranging Lemurs In Human Care: A Comparative Analysis Of Ring-Tailed & Red Ruffed Lemurs’ Responses To Different Kinds Of Enrichment, Alexia Atkinson Jan 2024

Habitat Utilization Patterns Of Semi-Free-Ranging Lemurs In Human Care: A Comparative Analysis Of Ring-Tailed & Red Ruffed Lemurs’ Responses To Different Kinds Of Enrichment, Alexia Atkinson

Theses & ETDs

Lemurs are at risk; 98% of Madagascar's 106 species of lemurs are threatened with extinction. As a result of this conservation emergency, research and conservation facilities have prioritized studying and breeding lemurs, especially in naturalistic conditions like fenced forests. However, sometimes lemurs in these facilities do not use the extent of the land available to them, and we do not always know why. This research investigates the effect of enrichment devices on the habitat preferences and behaviors of ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), a species that often spends time on the ground, and red ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra), a primarily arboreal …

Alone Time: How Motivation For And Quality Of Solitude Impact Workplace Performance, Alyssa Sampson Jan 2024

Alone Time: How Motivation For And Quality Of Solitude Impact Workplace Performance, Alyssa Sampson

Theses & ETDs

Research has found that social isolation, especially in the case of ostracism, can have many negative effects on individuals. However, some factors decrease the extent of the negative effects. One such factor is an individual’s motivation for solitude: the reasons one seeks experiences of solitude and how they use them. Two studies expand solitude research into the workplace setting. The first study used a cross-sectional survey and examined how motivation for solitude related to relationship quality and satisfaction among coworkers, and how the association between ostracism and negative mental health is related to self-determined motivation for solitude. Self-determined motivation for …

Reading As An Adventure: How Individualization In English Classrooms Uplifts Students, Scruffs O'Neil Jan 2024

Reading As An Adventure: How Individualization In English Classrooms Uplifts Students, Scruffs O'Neil

Theses & ETDs

Students deserve to have classrooms designed with their holistic needs in mind. Teachers should utilize pedagogical research to deliberately design their classrooms in a way that empowers student success. Structuring a classroom with these sentiments in mind reveals the benefits to students that pedagogically and psychologically sound educational activities provide. This thesis attempts to implement the pedagogical approach of active learning by developing a unit that relies on Reading Groups and Socratic Seminars. Reading Groups offer students the unique opportunity to engage with their choice in text; a common barrier for students in finding motivation for class readings. Additionally, Reading …

Do You Mind? Exploring The Relationship Between Journaling About Purpose And Psychological Engagement With Mindfulness Meditation, Lola Swanson Jan 2024

Do You Mind? Exploring The Relationship Between Journaling About Purpose And Psychological Engagement With Mindfulness Meditation, Lola Swanson

Theses & ETDs

The present paper examines mindfulness meditation as an accessible (more available and affordable than existing treatment options) intervention for depression and anxiety, and ultimately proposes journaling about purpose as an addition to mindfulness meditation practice that would address the issue of psychological engagement. Psychological engagement with mindfulness meditation is what mediates the neurological benefits, but unfortunately individuals with high levels of rumination and worry (characteristics of depression and anxiety) struggle with psychological engagement. Journaling about purpose is explored as a possible solution to this issue because Burrow et al. (2016) found that journaling about purpose had a relationship to effort …

The Restorative Benefits Of Green Spaces In The College Student Experience, Alexandra Gorman Jan 2024

The Restorative Benefits Of Green Spaces In The College Student Experience, Alexandra Gorman

Theses & ETDs

More and more of the global population is starting to live in cities, where they may have limited access to meaningful interactions with nature. This not only reduces empathy and concern for the climate as a whole, but also produces tangible effects on the wellbeing of individuals. Incorporating nature into urban landscapes through public green spaces (such as parks) improves mental health and functioning by reducing stress and alleviating mental strain. The current study examines green spaces on a college campus to analyze how the benefits of interacting with nature can be maximized for this specific group. An established scale …

Color, Power, And Meaning, Xin Zhang Jan 2024

Color, Power, And Meaning, Xin Zhang

Theses & ETDs

Through a comprehensive analysis of historical texts, artistic artifacts, and contemporary interpretations, this thesis examines the multifaceted role of color as a symbol of power, a carrier of meaning, and a reflection of cultural identity. It explores the philosophical basis of color in Chinese thought, primarily through the perspective of the Yin-Yang theory and its impact on understanding the historical evolution of color symbolism in Chinese culture; it also introduces the norms for the use of color in clothing in the history, seeking to reveal the complex relationship between color, power, and meaning in Chinese culture and highlighting its significant …

Echolocating And Non-Echolocating Whales Have Conserved Ascending Auditory Pathways But Differentially Lateralized Auditory-Cerebellar Connections, Sophie Flem Jan 2024

Echolocating And Non-Echolocating Whales Have Conserved Ascending Auditory Pathways But Differentially Lateralized Auditory-Cerebellar Connections, Sophie Flem

Theses & ETDs

In the inaugural analysis of structural connectivity in a baleen whale (suborder Mysticeti) brain, we compared the white matter tracts of a non-echolocating sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) against those of three echolocating delphinids (suborder Odontoceti). Brains were opportunistically collected from stranded animals and imaged post-mortem at high resolution with a specialized acquisition sequence optimized for dead tissue. We then conducted probabilistic tractography to compare the qualitative features, white matter tract strength, and lateralization of potential ascending and descending auditory paths in the mysticete versus odontocete brains. Tracts were seeded in the inferior colliculi (IC), a nexus for ascending auditory information, …

Ringling’S Artist Academy: The Development Of A Sequential Museum Education Program For Homeschool Visitors, Rosa Martinez Jan 2024

Ringling’S Artist Academy: The Development Of A Sequential Museum Education Program For Homeschool Visitors, Rosa Martinez

Theses & ETDs

In my thesis I developed an educational program plan entitled Ringling’s Art Academy, which delves into the elements of art as a foundation to art making. Inspired by the constructivist theory and approaches currently used in the Ringling Museum’s youth and family programs, I designed the program as a series of sessions that would facilitate sequential learning: learning goals that build on one another through scaffolding methods. This format consists of four weekly sessions that introduce different elements of art over the course of the program, exploring these elements in a historical context, as well as through art-viewing and art-making …

Do Babies Learn From Interactive Baby Media?, Alyssa Palmatier Jan 2024

Do Babies Learn From Interactive Baby Media?, Alyssa Palmatier

Theses & ETDs

Children in modern society are exposed to media every day, and there is little to be done in regards to limits or screen time. Two types of videos were created and given to children between 17-24 months in order to examine the context of interaction in media and determine whether they were able to learn more novel words from interactive media than they were able to learn from non-interactive media. All participants learned between four and nine of the ten novel words they were taught via the media. Results found that the context of interaction in media did not predict …

The Problem Of “Feeling” In Whitehead’S Metaphysics, Michael A. Flannery Jan 2024

The Problem Of “Feeling” In Whitehead’S Metaphysics, Michael A. Flannery

Libraries Professional Work

This article explores process philosophy through Alfred North Whitehead and John Elof Boodin. Whitehead, known for "Process and Reality," faced criticism from Boodin for his abstract concepts, especially "feeling." Tensions over definitions and clarity in their philosophies reflect broader academic debates that may not influence general understanding.

A revised version of this article may be found at http://digitalcommons.library.uab.edu/libraries-pw/27/. The new version has been expanded to include additional material

Explore The Relationship Between Birth Order And Level Of Differentiation Of Self, Ruchika Jain Jan 2024

Explore The Relationship Between Birth Order And Level Of Differentiation Of Self, Ruchika Jain

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Family systems theory has played a primary role in the clinical development of family therapy. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between the variables, level of differentiation of self, and birth order. The researcher wanted to understand and explore the applicability of family systems theory in collectivistic cultures like India. Data from 136 participants from India, aged 18-29 was collected. DSI(R) is a self-reporting questionnaire that was filled up by the participants along with their demographic details and birth order. The results inferred that there was no significant relationship between the studied variables, indicating there are other confounding …

Physiological Indices Of Anxiety And Self-Regulation Under Task Demands And Talk Aloud, Zachary Gerber Jan 2024

Physiological Indices Of Anxiety And Self-Regulation Under Task Demands And Talk Aloud, Zachary Gerber

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Anxiety shows differential reactions to stress across two distinct constructs: anxious apprehension and anxious arousal. Differences are related to bilateral resting state activity differences as measured by ECG and MRI studies, cognitive coping strategies measure via mismatch between anticipated and actual outcomes and across behavioral performance measures. Of note is the lack of extension of these terms to physiological domains other than measures of brain activity. It has been posited that the brain interacts in a top-down regulatory fashion with the autonomic nervous system to coordinate bodily reactions with environmental information to bring about changes in behavior. Given brain and …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of Goal-Directed Versus Stimulus Driven Visual Search Training At Improving Goalkeepers’ Penalty Kick Save Responses, Annabelle Treacy Jan 2024

Assessing The Effectiveness Of Goal-Directed Versus Stimulus Driven Visual Search Training At Improving Goalkeepers’ Penalty Kick Save Responses, Annabelle Treacy

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Goalkeepers must perceive and analyze many different types of information in a short time to effectively move their bodies to make a save. Skilled goalkeepers enhance their actions by coupling them to information present in their environment. The information in their environment constantly changes, so the goalkeepers must adjust their strategies or positions to match the environmental demands. Goalkeepers use two types of perception and attentional strategies: stimulus-driven and goal-directed. Stimulus-driven perception is fast and compulsory, while goal-directed perception is slower and more methodical. Both visual search strategies direct the goalkeeper’s attention to where it is most needed and can …
