The Kids Are Not Alright: Teachers’ Perspectives On Social And Emotional Learning In Diverse Populations, Siobhan Dalrymple

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This dissertation was inspired by the researcher’s own experiences as a K-8 teacher. Reflecting on her struggles with classroom management and meeting the social and emotional needs of students who had experienced trauma, the researcher chose to take a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to studying Illinois elementary school teachers’ self-efficacy and motivation with regard to social and emotional learning (SEL) as influenced by community, district, and school level factors as well as the teachers’ own beliefs and practices. Five teachers in four different Illinois school districts were interviewed for this paper; the researcher also includes data from a pilot study with …

Enhancing Proprioception And Regulating Cognitive Load In Neurodiverse Populations Through Biometric Monitoring With Wearable Technologies, James Hutson, Piper Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This paper considers the realm of wearable technologies and their prospective applications for individuals with neurodivergent conditions, specifically Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). The study undertakes a multifaceted analysis that encompasses biomarker sensing technologies, AI-driven biofeedback mechanisms, and haptic devices, focusing on their implications for enhancing proprioception and social interaction among neurodivergent populations. While wearables offer a range of opportunities for societal advancement, a discernable gap remains: a scarcity of consumer-oriented applications tailored to the unique physiological and psychological needs of these individuals. Key takeaways underscore the emergent promise of tailored auditory stimuli in workplace dynamics and the efficacy of haptic …

A Case Study On First-Year Experience Programs And The Importance Of Sense Of Belonging For Latinx Students, Javier Aquino

Dissertations of Practice

Latinx students who are first-generation college students face a plethora of barriers when transitioning from high school to college. For example, some students experience a lack of sense of belonging to a campus community, cannot afford to continue their studies, and need guidance on how to be successful in college. First-year support programs can help aid students as they transition. Many of these programs reside in colleges/universities that are low-staffed and have limited funding. Students who are part of first-year programs look to the program to help fill in the gap so they can be successful and complete their college …

Examining Onboarding Practices In School Settings: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Gabriel Medina

Dissertations of Practice

This dissertation examines the onboarding practices implemented in several schools within a district and their impacts on teacher retention and the culture and climate of the schools. The theoretical lens of self-determination theory was used to determine areas of strength and growth of onboarding with respect to the three basic human psychological needs of autonomy, belonging, and competence. Drawing on this theory, the research aimed to reveal how onboarding practices support or hinder fulfillment of these basic psychological needs in a school setting. By examining how teachers perceive their onboarding experiences, the study sheds light on the relationship between the …

Pop culture can teach us a lot about the law: almost everyone knows the Miranda warnings and can recite them by heart, thanks to Law and Order and other crime dramas, the concept of a “conservatorship” is familiar to many because of Brittany Spears, and the notorious RBG has become a household name, recognizable in a crown and jabot, partly due to Kate McKinnon’s portrayal on SNL.

Commercials, and the pop culture icons featured in them, can also teach students about the art of persuasive advocacy. At the start of the spring semester, when I segue from objective analysis to …

The Bourgeoisie Black Church: An Analysis Of The American Black Church's Aspirations And Imagination, Alexander Robert Booker Jan 2024

The Bourgeoisie Black Church: An Analysis Of The American Black Church's Aspirations And Imagination, Alexander Robert Booker

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

I am a product of the Black church. It is my home, my heart, and it has helped me spiritually, financially, and emotionally in many ways throughout my life. However, the church that I love dearly and has provided me with many opportunities has also provided spaces of harm, exclusion, and the promotion of an imperialistic Christ. This tension is not a unique tension for many institutions born in America, but what I see so clearly is the tension between the Black church’s countercultural and resistant roots that started in the brush harbors of the antebellum south and into what …

Objective: Several gaps remain in the understanding of the onset, dynamic transitions, and associated risk factors of adverse posttraumatic neuropsychiatric sequelae (APNS) in the acute post-trauma window. Based on serial assessments of symptoms from a large cohort study, we identified homogeneous statuses across multiple APNS symptom domains and investigated the dynamic transitions among these statuses during the first 2 months after trauma exposure. Furthermore, we studied how symptom onset and transitions are affected by equity-relevant characteristics. Methods: The analysis was based on 2557 participants enrolled in the Advancing Understanding of RecOvery afteR traumA (AURORA). APNS symptoms comprised pain, depression, sleep …

Exploring Ideological Differences In Taiwanese Perceptions Of Cross-Strait Relations, Rong Chen, Kristína Kironská, Jiri Čeněk

Psychology | Faculty Scholarship

This is an exploratory research that seeks to investigate how ideology predicts Taiwanese perceptions of cross-strait relations, including attitudes toward Taiwan independence, perceptions of mainland China and Chinese people, Chinese invasion of Taiwan, and Chinese democracy. We took an inductive approach to left-right differences in Taiwan to offer a more systematic empirical understanding of ideology beyond the West. To do so, we conducted a nationally representative survey among adult Taiwan citizens (N = 1,350). Findings revealed that those who identified with the Left (vs. Right) tended to demonstrate more negative perceptions of cross-strait relations. Specifically, the political left is more …

Using PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL Complete, studies were selected by searching the terms “Vitamin D, depression, children and adolescents.” The inclusion criteria consisted of data over the last five years, presenting vitamin D intake or status in subjects between the ages of 2-17, and a diagnosis of depression. Eleven studies met the eligibility criteria. Nine of the studies …

The Berlin Airlift And Its Humanitarian And The Pr Aspect, Madalyn Stead Jan 2024

The Berlin Airlift And Its Humanitarian And The Pr Aspect, Madalyn Stead

2024 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

The Berlin Airlift, or die Berliner Luftbrücke, was one of the most dramatic events of the Cold War. While the Cold War lasted forty-five years, from 1947 to 1991, the Berlin Airlift took place at the very beginning, from 1948-1949. It was a great humanitarian effort, and is respected as one of the United States’ “finest hours,” as author Andrei Cherney titled it. It was presented as such through media, the news, and even pop culture. Curating it to look good was a carefully done job, but that should not always take away from the people who are involved in …

Quality Improvement Of Code Status Reconciliation Among Hospital Providers, Erin A. Barnes Jan 2024

Quality Improvement Of Code Status Reconciliation Among Hospital Providers, Erin A. Barnes

DNP Projects

Code status assessment is an essential component in the acute hospital setting and a vital of the hospital admission process. If inadequately addressed, it can lead to costly length of stays and unwanted life-prolonging measures. Under the Patient Self-Determination Act of 1990, healthcare organizations must inform patients of their rights to healthcare, assess and document in the medical record whether the patient has an advance directive, and educate staff and communities on issues concerning advance directives (Patient Self-Determination Act, 1990). The purpose of the project was to assess current provider practices regarding code status assessment in the acute hospital setting, …

Beyond Combat: Moral Injury Exposure In Officer And Enlisted Marine Veterans With Diverse Deployment Histories And The Relationship With Posttraumatic Growth, Hira Jean Byrne Paulin

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Moral injury has been widely studied in male combat-deployed active-duty personnel and veterans, with little inclusion of non-combat or never-deployed experiences. Moral injury research has primarily focused on adverse outcomes. Within military moral injury research, there is limited information on individual branches of service or rank-specific experiences. The purpose of this study was to explore moral injury event exposure and posttraumatic growth within a single branch of service, the Marine Corps, with a focus on rank status and the inclusion of non-combat and never-deployed veterans. A community-based approach was used to recruit participants over a 2-month period. Participants completed a …

The purpose of this study is to perform a qualitative inquiry to learn more about the African American male psychological motivation of self-esteem, racial identity, and academic self-concept. Literature about African American student self-esteem and self-concept exists yet based on my observations, …

Restorative Justice For International Traditional Cultural Expression Ownership Disputes, Sandra H. Sulzer Jan 2024

Restorative Justice For International Traditional Cultural Expression Ownership Disputes, Sandra H. Sulzer

Michigan Journal of International Law

Traditional cultural expressions (“TCE”), which include dances, songs, and pottery, and traditional knowledge (“TK”), which includes plant properties, agricultural practices, and artistic techniques, are inarguably valuable both to the groups that create them and to outsiders who wish to use or sell them. International law broadly, and intellectual property (“IP”) law more specifically, are not well-suited to protect the interests of creators of TCE and TK. A persistent pattern of exploitation of traditional expressions and knowledge has been well-documented. But responses have been dissatisfying, and sometimes begin from a place of disregarding the value of these contributions. At present, when …
