Interventive Strategies To Reduce Perineal Laceration In Birthing People: An Integrative Review, Brittaney H. Corso, Shannon L. Kramer
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Perineal and vaginal lacerations are one of the most prevalent complications of vaginal birth. Third- and fourth-degree/severe lacerations put a woman at risk for bleeding, infection, chronic pain, sexual dysfunction and dyspareunia, pelvic and perineal pain, and urinary and fecal incontinence. The purpose of this review was to anthologize recent, applicable findings in order to equip maternal care providers with evidence-based recommendations for interventions that preserve perineal integrity. Methods: This integrative review utilized four databases to search for studies published between 2014-2024 that researched strategies for reducing perineal trauma during labor and birth. Using Covidence to aid in screening, …

Impact Of Gamification In High School Business Courses, Sumaya A. Mohamed
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gamification has been a tool used to increase students' motivation and engagement. A substantial amount of research has been done on the use of gamification and game-based learning in higher education business courses. With the integration of technology in classrooms today, gamification has the ability to provide educators with a tool to supplement students' learning through a variety of gamified applications. While there are positive and negative aspects presented with using gamification in the classroom, gamification allows for students to further develop their perceived learning, implement critical thinking skills, and motivate students to take ownership of their learning. Educators are …

Teacher Burnout And Mitigation, Wayne Flenniken
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Burnout in the American Education System is a major concern, with impacts connected to student achievement, teacher turnover, as well as the physical and mental health of teachers. Tools, such as the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Areas of Worklife Survey can be used to track, measure, and predict burnout in educators. This investigation summarizes available research on the causes of, and effects of burnout in schools as well as recommendations in the research to mitigate burnout. Burnout thrives in schools where teachers lack autonomy, unresolved disagreements linger, promotion decisions are made based on whim rather than merit, accomplishments go …

Augustine's Analogy: How To Say God, Eric Kalimbiriro Osc
Augustine's Analogy: How To Say God, Eric Kalimbiriro Osc
Obsculta
Augustine's analogy of the Trinity regards the question of how to speak about God. Augustine maintained that human language and material images are limited in their ability to wholly capture the essence of God, who is beyond human comprehension. He understood that the language we use to describe God is necessarily metaphorical and analogical, as we cannot fully grasp the transcendent nature of the divine. By using analogy, Augustine aimed to help his audiences come to some rudimentary understanding of the Trinity. This paper argues that Augustine's use of analogy provides a persuasive approach for understanding the Trinity. It focuses …
An Open Mystery: Reflections On The Metaphysical Status Of The Participatory Approach, Jorge N. Ferrer
An Open Mystery: Reflections On The Metaphysical Status Of The Participatory Approach, Jorge N. Ferrer
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This paper provides an assessment and clarification of the metaphysical status of the participatory approach to transpersonal and spiritual phenomena (Ferrer, 2002, 2017a). To that end, I first respond to several criticisms of the approach issued by scholars in recent years; for instance, that it hides a perennialist metaphysics (e.g., Abramson, 2015) or that it is metaphysically vague (e.g., Taylor, 2021). After reviewing these critical discussions, I describe the open and minimalist nature of the participatory metaphysics, arguing that such features cultivate a fertile soil for transpersonal scholarship, human flourishing, and interreligious relations. Applying a biomimetic approach, I argue that …

Introduction: YouTube is a popular social media video platform used by health professions students for medical education. YouTube videos vary in quality, and students need to be able to evaluate and select high-quality videos to supplement their learning. Evaluating the quality of YouTube videos is an essential information literacy skill, and the Association of College and Research Libraries updated the framework of information literacy to include collaborative platforms such as YouTube. Research is needed to understand and explore the information literacy proficiency of students in the health professions who are using YouTube videos as learning resources. Methods: This exploratory expert-novice …

On April 19 and 20, 2023, Professors Bernard Hibbitts and Richard Weisberg convened a conference at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law titled “Disarmed, Distracted, Disconnected, and Distressed: Modern Legal Education and the Unmaking of American Lawyers.” Four speakers concluded the event with a spirited conversation about themes expressed during the proceedings. Distilling a lively two days, they asked: what are the most critical challenges now facing US legal education and, by extension, lawyers and the communities they serve? Their agreements and disagreements were striking, so much so that Professors Hibbitts and Weisberg invited those four to extend their …

Examining The Effects Of Manualized Suicide Intervention Training On Clinical Psychology Doctoral Trainees: A Quasi-Experimental Trial, Alexander Dorfman M.S.
Examining The Effects Of Manualized Suicide Intervention Training On Clinical Psychology Doctoral Trainees: A Quasi-Experimental Trial, Alexander Dorfman M.S.
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Although most clinical psychology doctoral trainees encounter at least one suicidal client over the course of their training (Dexter-Mazza & Freeman, 2003), there is notable variability in the degree of formal suicide risk assessment and intervention training offered across clinical psychology doctoral programs (Monahan & Karver, 2021). Most suicide-related training involves passive (e.g., lectures) rather than active (e.g., role-plays, experiential exercises) training techniques, despite evidence for the effectiveness of the latter in improving clinicians’ skills (Gryglewicz et al., 2020). The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a manualized, evidence-based training incorporating didactics and role-plays (LivingWorks, 2013; Rodgers, 2010). The …

Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
As Instagram’s popularity has grown in recent years, so too has public and research interest grown in understanding the effects of Instagram use on young women. The present study joins a growing number of daily diary studies that explored momentary changes in negative affect, self-esteem, distress, vulnerable narcissism, and grandiose narcissism in response to browsing Instagram and exposure to distressing images. The role of narcissistic personality traits on such relationships was of particular interest. The present study implemented a naturalistic design with an in vivo procedure to also analyze post characteristics that contribute to negative emotional responses. Participants were 153 …

Momentary Suicidal Ideation In The Context Of Romantic Conflict, Hyungji Kim
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
This micro-longitudinal study examined the psychological mechanisms involved in the momentary unfolding of suicidal ideation (SI) subsequent to conflicts with a romantic partner (PRC), with a specific aim to examine the mediating and moderating roles of state anger (SA), rejection expectancy (RE), lack of emotional awareness (LEA), and perceived social support from friends (PSS). Adult participants (N = 114) who confirmed residing in the U.S., being in a romantic relationship for at least three months, and having experienced at least one episode of suicidal ideation within the past month were asked to complete self-report measures on baseline rejection expectancy (A-RSQ), …

From a historical and sociological legal perspective, children in America, including in Hawai'i, require extraordinary legal protection from the harm of climate change and the government actions causing them harm. Hawai'i has a long history and tradition of leading the way on broadening rights and protections under state law, particularly for children. The principles of intergenerational justice and equity at the heart of the public trust doctrine in Hawai'i similarly require that courts accord special attention and protection for children.
On June 20, 2024, the youth-powered Navahine case settled, resulting in the first constitutional climate settlement of its kind in …

Trauma, Hostile Attribution Bias, Substance Use, And Aggression Among Justice Involved Individuals With Severe Mental Illness, Emily Sarah Miller
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
Previous literature has supported the significant impacts of trauma on aggression as well as the exploration of various other complex, multidimensional factors that maintain the mechanisms of this relationship. This study aimed to further understand the relationship between trauma experiences and aggression, while also examining the possible strengthening impact of hostile attribution bias (HAB), substance use, and severe mental illness (SMI) on this cycle of violence among justice-involved individuals (JII). This study seeks to add to the limited literature of HAB within adult, forensic populations. A total of 82 participants were recruited from an alternative-to-incarceration program and completed a survey …

The Effects Of Opioids And How They Affected The American Healthcare System, Harold Osborne
The Effects Of Opioids And How They Affected The American Healthcare System, Harold Osborne
Integrated Studies
The opioid pandemic swept through the United States in the early 2000’s, causing many to fight a battle with addiction. A drug that has been dated back to the 1860s found a new life where it was thought to give patients better access to pain management. This would prove true, but the consequences that would come with this were far graver than the benefits. Between 1999 and 2010 the amount of opioid related deaths more than doubled from 2.9 deaths per 100,000 people to 6.8 deaths per 100,000 people. Since 1999 more than six hundred thousand people have lost their …
Patient Safety And Its Role In Healthcare, Jennifer Brown
Patient Safety And Its Role In Healthcare, Jennifer Brown
Integrated Studies
Abstract
In the United States, medical errors are a major cause of death and a critical public health issue. Finding a reliable cause of mistakes and then offering a reliable, workable solution that reduces the likelihood of an ongoing issue are difficult tasks. Patient safety can be raised by acknowledging unfortunate events when they happen, acquiring knowledge about them, and striving to steer clear of them as well. Effectiveness in post-medical errors follow-up procedures is a pertinent and significant study topic for a number of reasons. In a hospital or maybe even a doctor's office, you may speak and engage …

‘Resisting’ While Collaboratively Informing In Communist Czechoslovakia, Mark A. Drumbl, Barbora Holá
‘Resisting’ While Collaboratively Informing In Communist Czechoslovakia, Mark A. Drumbl, Barbora Holá
Scholarly Articles
Informers in the service of state secret police collaborate with authorities and thus contribute to the power of repressive regimes. Through a case-study of Communist Czechoslovakia (1945–1989)—and drawing from secret police archives– this article presents selected stories of informers who in one way or another also ‘resisted’ collaboration with the Czechoslovak State Security (StB). By doing so, we try to further complexify the notions of ’everyday resistance’, on the one hand, and ‘collaboration’ on the other. We demonstrate that resistant acts, similar to collaborative acts, can be apolitically devoid of ideology, highly idiosyncratic, and motivated by private drivers. Informing can …
Business Lawyer Leadership: Valuing Relationships, Joan Macleod Heminway
Business Lawyer Leadership: Valuing Relationships, Joan Macleod Heminway
Scholarly Works
Business lawyers are surrounded by relationships because of the nature of their work. Businesses are relational; business associations law is relational; business lawyering is relational. Business lawyering, in all its manifestations, is a practice steeped in the lawyer’s awareness and management of, as well as their participation in, the layered sets of relationships found in businesses and business associations law. This article recognizes these important connections between business law practice and relationships. It approaches each of them in turn. The substantial take-away is that a business lawyer can best lead by understanding the inherent value of relationships to business lawyering …
Effect Of Psilocybin On Empathy And Moral Decision-Making, Sky Evans
Effect Of Psilocybin On Empathy And Moral Decision-Making, Sky Evans
VCU's Medical Journal Club: The Work of Future Health Professionals
Empathy is the ability for human beings, as well as all other mammals, to understand the mental state of another person on an emotional level. It allows us to feel compassion and promote the well-being of those around us. Impaired empathic abilities lead to severe negative social consequences and influence the development and treatment of several psychiatric disorders, specifically in disorders such as antisocial personality disorder. Furthermore, empathy has been shown to play a crucial role in moral and prosocial behavior. In neuroscience and psychiatry research, the serotonin system has been shown to be involved in modulating empathy and moral …

Children’s mental health care has been on the decline since the start of the century. The COVID-19 pandemic further unearthed this significant worsening of mental health in children with heightened levels of anxiety, depression, loneliness, anger, and fatigue leading to an increase in the number of emergency room visits and inpatient hospitalizations. Art and narrative-based interventions are known to improve patient outcomes and are a crucial component of pediatric inpatient psychiatric care. We discuss the process of adoption of a novel therapeutic comic book that was developed for children admitted to the hospital in a psychiatric inpatient unit at Yale-New …

Loose parts play is a play practice that prioritizes a child’s ability to self-direct and intrinsically motivate above all else. It does so by utilizing decontextualized items that are flexible in their usage and allow children to project their own ideas, imaginations, and usages onto the items, rather than by allowing the items to dictate usage to the children. The booklet that Sam Shapiro created, Loose Parts in the Outdoor Play Space, provides a tool that professionals can utilize in support of their own loose parts programs. It provides an overview of the state of play, an examination of what …
