Information Sciences Letters

In this study, we investigate the role of behavioral economics in assisting small and medium enterprise (SME) owners in overcoming the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. By understanding the psychological factors that influence decision-making, behavioral economics provides insights into biases and heuristics that can cloud judgment during times of uncertainty and stress. This understanding helps SME owners make more rational choices and offers practical strategies to promote positive behaviors and mitigate the negative impact of the pandemic. Clear and timely communication is essential, enabling SME owners to access vital information about government support programs, safety protocols, and financial assistance. …

Entrepreneurial Orientation And Organizational Performance: Exploring Moderated Curvilinear Relationships, Gang Fan, Mengge Li, Derrick E. D’Souza

Hunt Institute Working Paper Series

Empirical investigations of the EO–firm performance relationship have typically focused on small and medium-sized ventures and have relied on survey data. Will the shape of the relationship curve hold for firms that moved past the ‘ventures’ phase? Our study investigates a sample of 11,843 small, medium, and large publicly listed firms drawn from the COMPUSTAT database. We confirm the existence of a U-shaped EO-performance relationship, and our analysis offers new evidence on the role of EO in SMEs versus large firms. Contrary to conventional wisdom, our sample of SMEs displayed lower levels of EO than large firms, and large firms …

The New Management Accounting Ecosystem: A Retrospective View And Path To The Future, Chris Akroyd, Kevin E. Dow, Andrea Drake, Jeffrey Wong Jan 2024

The New Management Accounting Ecosystem: A Retrospective View And Path To The Future, Chris Akroyd, Kevin E. Dow, Andrea Drake, Jeffrey Wong

Hunt Institute Working Paper Series

In this paper we argue that management accounting research should seek to expand to examine the broader ecosystem of information sources that influence organizational performance. We introduce the concept of the management accounting ecosystem as a means of linking discrete management accounting research topics to the broader environment in which organizations operate. By doing this, we can better bridge the gap between management accounting research and management accounting practice. Our goal is to encourage more cross-disciplinary research that provides a better understanding of the ecosystem in which management accounting practitioners operate. We encourage researchers to submit studies to “Advances in …

Idiosyncratic Deals For Single-Parent Employees And The Role Of Socio-Economic Diversity In Converting Them Into Formalized Policies, Tanushree Chatterjee Jan 2024

Idiosyncratic Deals For Single-Parent Employees And The Role Of Socio-Economic Diversity In Converting Them Into Formalized Policies, Tanushree Chatterjee

Hunt Institute Working Paper Series

Single-parents are an increasing demographic of employees within many industries who warrant special attention. This study aims to analyze customized work arrangements negotiated by single-parent employees with their supervisors, known as idiosyncratic deals (i-deals), which improves the quality of life in their work/family domains. The results can be extended to an organizational level of analysis, where the cumulative work-family enrichment is used to predict the usage of formal family policies among single-parent employees. This will help bridge the gap between individual experiences of single-parent employees and the overall perspective of the organization on promoting a better work environment for single-parents.

Productivity Within Groups: An Analysis Of Shirking In High School Cross Country Competitions, Nathan J. Ashby Jan 2024

Productivity Within Groups: An Analysis Of Shirking In High School Cross Country Competitions, Nathan J. Ashby

Hunt Institute Working Paper Series

Using enrollment based classification realignments for high school cross country running competitions in the state of Texas, we analyze the impact of changes in the intensity of competition on individual and team performance. The analysis demonstrates significant improvement in the performance of teams promoted to more competitive classifications in the boys’ division but does not yield similar results in the girls’ division. We also analyze the impact on runners according to their rankings within teams and find improvements to be greater for runners ranking lower relative to team leaders driven by heterogeneity in motivation based on ability or the sequential …

When Fines Don't Go Far Enough: The Failure Of Prison Settlements And Proposals For More Effective Enforcement Methods, Tori Collins Jan 2024

When Fines Don't Go Far Enough: The Failure Of Prison Settlements And Proposals For More Effective Enforcement Methods, Tori Collins

Maine Law Review

The Eighth Amendment’s Punishments Clause provides the basis on which prisoners may bring suit alleging unconstitutional conditions of confinement. Only a small number of these suits are successful. The suits that do survive typically end in a settlement in which prison authorities agree to address the unconstitutional conditions. However, settlements such as these are easily flouted for two primary reasons: prison authorities are not personally held liable when settlements are broken, and prisoners largely lack the political and practical leverage to self-advocate beyond the courtroom. Because of this, unconstitutional prison conditions may linger for years after prison authorities have agreed …

Getting The Green Light: Renewable Energy As An Internal Tribal Matter, J. Shinay Jan 2024

Getting The Green Light: Renewable Energy As An Internal Tribal Matter, J. Shinay

Maine Law Review

For over forty years the Wabanaki people of Maine have had their sovereignty diminished as a result of the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act (MICSA), an arrangement with the state and federal government unlike any other tribal sovereignty arrangement in the Unites States. The MICSA was born from a decades-long debate over land rights and resource rights in Maine, culminating in a “compromise” that avoided political conflict at the expense of Wabanaki sovereignty. Under the MICSA, the Wabanaki do not have sovereign status, instead only holding sovereign control over those matters the state deems “internal tribal matters.” Among the many …

The New People V. Collins: How Can Probabilistic Evidence Be Properly Admitted?, David Crump Jan 2024

The New People V. Collins: How Can Probabilistic Evidence Be Properly Admitted?, David Crump

Maine Law Review

The California Supreme Court’s decision in People v. Collins is a staple in Evidence casebooks. An innovative assistant district attorney in the trial court had presented a mathematician who applied probabilities to questions about the perpetrators’ characteristics. The state supreme court disapproved the injection of an equation featuring what mathematicians call the “product rule.” The opinion contains thank-goodness-we-escaped-that-disaster reasoning and condemnation of this use of mathematics with probabilities. But the court’s analysis probably would be different if the case were decided today, as the “new” People v. Collins. Therefore, this Article considers what the author calls the new People v. …

The Potential Impact Of Ibuprofen On Level Of Il-6, Laith Ali Younus Jan 2024

The Potential Impact Of Ibuprofen On Level Of Il-6, Laith Ali Younus

Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences

Ibuprofen is a well-known Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) that has historically been used for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects. It is used as an over-the-counter pain reliever for conditions like headache, backache, muscle aches, toothaches, fever, and dysmenorrhea. It is used to treat chronic illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and others for an extended period of time. Due to its great efficacy compared to acetaminophen and relative safety compared to aspirin, it is also frequently used in juvenile patients to treat acute pain and fever by inhibiting prostaglandins, but they can also lower immunity by reducing …
