The Living Memory System: A Framework For Transforming Death Care Infrastructure Into A Perpetual Relational Ecosystem For Memory Preservation, Family Continuity, And Citizen-Governed Memorial Stewardship, Joseph Jm Walker
Defensive Publications Series
The death care industry operates under structural conditions that systematically disadvantage grieving families through information asymmetry, compressed decision timelines, relationship termination at the point of transaction, fragmented archival systems, and the absence of citizen-governed transparency standards. Simultaneously, the digital era has created a second layer of fragmentation in which human lives generate vast quantities of meaningful material that remains structurally disconnected from permanent physical memorial locations and inaccessible across generations.
This disclosure presents the Living Memory System — a modular, globally applicable framework repositioning memorial infrastructure from a primarily transactional service category into a long-term continuity ecosystem serving families, communities, …

Adrenal Crisis Induced-Seizures: A Case Report And Literature Review, Israel Umoh, Elizabeth Mikhail, Narjis Batool, Nosheen Hajra, Ibrahim Al-Sanouri
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
This case report underscores the critical interplay between adrenal crisis and seizure activity, emphasizing the importance of rapid recognition and management of this life-threatening condition. Adrenal crisis, characterized by severe hypotension and electrolyte disturbances, often manifests with nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and altered consciousness, which can obscure diagnosis, especially in pediatric and young adult populations. The report details a 21-year-old female with a complex endocrinologic background who developed seizures precipitated by an adrenal crisis triggered by gastroenteritis and compounded by medication noncompliance. Clinical findings included profound dehydration, electrolyte abnormalities, refractory hypotension, and low cortisol levels, which responded favorably …

Subaltern Alternatives: Reclaiming Agency Through Spatial Articulation, Nadirah Ali
Subaltern Alternatives: Reclaiming Agency Through Spatial Articulation, Nadirah Ali
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
The concept of the subaltern, introduced by Antonio Gramsci to describe populations excluded from political, social, and economic power while still being used to sustain dominant systems. Today, migrant construction workers often occupy this condition: essential to urban growth, yet denied dignity, visibility, and participation in the cities they build. Their housing is frequently reduced to an instrument of control—spaces designed to contain labor rather than support life. This thesis proposes an architectural alternative.
The project examines contemporary cases of labor exploitation in the United States, Qatar, and Singapore, where migrant workers have faced unsafe conditions, wage theft, …

An Analysis Of Pass Neurocognitive Processing Profiles On The Using The Cas-2 Standardization Sample, Danielle Lacey
An Analysis Of Pass Neurocognitive Processing Profiles On The Using The Cas-2 Standardization Sample, Danielle Lacey
ETD Collection
Cognitive assessments have long played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of human intelligence. Serving as cornerstones for measuring cognitive abilities, IQ tests provide essential insights that inform educational and psychological interventions. This study builds upon Naglieri’s (2000) research examining cognitive processing using the original Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) by conducting a similar analysis with standardization data from the CAS-2. Grounded in PASS theory, the CAS-2 was designed to assess cognitive processes rather than acquired knowledge. Its research emphasizes intra-individual variations in cognitive functioning and offers a process-oriented alternative to traditional, content-based intelligence tests. This approach promotes a more …

Examining Neurocognitive Differences In Executive Dysfunction And Thought Disorder In An Adolescent Inpatient Population, Perry A. Sandrock
ETD Collection
The current study aimed to explore and compare the scores on measures of psychotic symptomology among groups of adolescents that vary with respect to the presence or absence of thought disorder and executive functioning impairments. The study identified adolescents who were designated as having executive dysfunction and thought disorder, using scores on reliable and valid measures of these constructs as well as their scores on measures of psychotic symptomology, to determine differences on therapist-reported and self-reported scores. The sample consisted of 1365 inpatient adolescents, aged 13 to 18 years. Results revealed no age or gender effects. Adolescents were assessed with …

This study investigated the mental health of parents of children with developmental disabilities and delays (DD), as well as the ongoing effects of COVID-19 on their mental health. Differences in stress, depression, and anxiety among parents with and without infants with developmental delays were explored. Social support and parenting behaviors were investigated as potential moderators of the impact of developmental disability. The sample consisted of 674 parents whose youngest (or only) child was three years old or younger, living within the United States. Three comparison groups were distinguished: 1) parents who had no child identified with a developmental delay or …
Bringing Music To Life: An Autoethnographic Music Therapy Method For Performance Anxiety, Gabrielle Kwang-Jiin Ger
Bringing Music To Life: An Autoethnographic Music Therapy Method For Performance Anxiety, Gabrielle Kwang-Jiin Ger
Expressive Therapies Theses
Music performance anxiety (MPA) can be defined as manifestations of stress when faced with the task of performing in front of an audience and it impacts musicians of all ages and degrees of experience. MPA is a complex issue influenced by psychological, physiological, behavioral, environmental, and social factors and can affect one’s confidence, self-esteem, enjoyment of music, and career choices. This study investigated the development of methods in music therapy to reduce MPA and strengthen a musician’s relationship with performance. Through my own experiences in autoethnographic, mixed methods research, I explored the use of music and imagery and improvisation to …

Gallaudet University is the only university in the United States established for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, with a bilingual campus where students and staff use both English and American Sign Language (ASL) – making it a unique focus of study compared to other universities that use primarily …
Perception Of Mental Illness: Exploring Spatial Impacts On Well-Being, Dilan Stafin
Perception Of Mental Illness: Exploring Spatial Impacts On Well-Being, Dilan Stafin
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Bipolar disorder is often misunderstood, and its complex sensory and emotional needs are rarely considered in architectural design. Although research demonstrates that the built environment significantly affects stress, regulation, and healing, these insights are seldom applied to spaces dedicated to mental health awareness. This thesis investigates how architectural thresholds within a mental health awareness museum in Harris County, Texas, can bridge the gap between spaces of experience and spaces of care.
Reframing thresholds as therapeutic elements, the study draws on trauma theory to examine how transitions between openness and enclosure, stimulation and pause, and exposure and protection can spatially express …

A Multiple-Framework Approach To Examining The Role Of College Visits In College Access And Success For First-Generation And Bipoc Students, Jameia Mcduffie
LMU Theses and Dissertations
A Multiple-Framework Approach to Examining the Role of College Visits in College Access and Success for First-Generation and BIPOC Students By Jameia McDuffie This mixed-methods study explored how first-generation and BIPOC college students make sense of their college visit experiences and how those moments shaped confidence, belonging, and readiness for higher education. The study draws on Possible Selves Theory (Markus & Nurius, 1986), Community Cultural Wealth (Yosso, 2005), and Critical Race Theory (Ladson– Billings & Tate, 1995) to better understand the connections students form between what they see on campus and what they imagine for themselves. These frameworks guided the …
Virtual Matter: Architecture As A Critical Turning Point, Aden Sterchi
Virtual Matter: Architecture As A Critical Turning Point, Aden Sterchi
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
The materialization of AI infrastructure has outpaced all regulatory frameworks, allowing data centers to proliferate with limited oversight despite their growing environmental and social impacts. Through a review of artificial intelligence’s technological development, the rise of big tech, and contemporary data center expansion, this thesis situates AI infrastructure within a broader pattern of deregulation, delayed accountability, and market-driven governance. Using a qualitative mixed-method approach combining historical analysis, policy critique, regional case studies, and research-through-design, the study examines how existing land use, utility, and environmental frameworks have failed to keep pace with the scale of data center sprawl; The study also …
Dynamic Trust Calibration, Bruno Miranda Henrique
Dynamic Trust Calibration, Bruno Miranda Henrique
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Trust calibration between humans and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is crucial for optimal decision-making in collaborative settings. Excessive trust can lead users to accept AI-generated outputs without question, overlooking critical flaws, while insufficient trust may result in disregarding valuable insights from AI systems, hindering performance. Despite its importance, there is currently no definitive and objective method for measuring trust calibration between humans and AI. Current approaches lack standardization and consistent metrics that can be broadly applied across various contexts, and they don’t distinguish between the formation of opinions and subsequent human decisions. This thesis brings a novel and objective method for …

Justice For None: How The United States’ Sexual-Offense System Fails Victims, Defendants, And The Public, Hannah J. Flannery
Advanced Issues in Criminal Law: Sex Offenses
This paper argues that the United States criminal justice system fundamentally fails in its treatment of sexual offenses by retraumatizing survivors while simultaneously relying on punitive mechanisms that undermine meaningful accountability and rehabilitation. Through an examination of adversarial courtroom practices, prosecutorial discretion, plea bargaining, sex-offender registries, and civil commitment regimes, the paper demonstrates how American law prioritizes punishment, political performance, and moral panic over truth, dignity, and public safety. In contrast, comparative analysis of France, Canada, and the Nordic countries reveals alternative models grounded in consent-based legal frameworks, trauma-informed procedures, and rehabilitative justice. These systems emphasize proportionality, reintegration, and institutional …

Cracks In The Great Wall: Zero-Covid Protests And The Reassertion Of Political Security In China, Khannia Zhafira Ronaulli Pandjaitan, Arfin Sudirman
Jurnal Wacana Politik
The protests of the zero-COVID policy in 2022, which led to the issuance of Ten New Measures in China, are an interesting political phenomenon to study. This phenomenon raises questions about the dynamics of China’s political security during the zero-COVID policy period and how the government responded to the social pressures that arose. Applying political security theory that emphasizes national objectives, threat perceptions, and political freedom of action, this article analyzes China’s political dynamics during that period. This article concludes that political security for a country is often realized through various actions justified to protect national interests and maintain social …
The Lived Experiences Of Clinical Mental Health Counselors Returning To Clinical Work After Becoming A New Mom: A Phenomenological Study, Kathryn Bohn
Dissertations
The experience of transitioning back to work postpartum can be an emotional rollercoaster for women. One that is often filled with identity tensions and sweeping emotions that range from guilt to relief, anxiety to confidence (Dod, 2025; Franzoi et al., 2023; Garcia-Lorenzo et al., 2023). Postpartum can be an emotionally raw and vulnerable time for new mothers as they navigate physical and emotional changes, maternal stress, and the pressures and demands of new motherhood (LeBlanc, 2023; Maylott, 2023). Professional counselors in a clinical setting, also known as clinical mental health counselors, encounter occupationally specific responsibilities that create unique experiences for …
The Role Of Ceo Biases And Heuristics For Large Firms’ Innovation, Cristina O. Vlas, Radu E. Vlas
The Role Of Ceo Biases And Heuristics For Large Firms’ Innovation, Cristina O. Vlas, Radu E. Vlas
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
Do different CEO biases affect large firms’ innovation differently, and to what extent are these effects bounded by CEOs’ heuristics? In this article, we highlight overlooked antecedents, such as the biases imposed by CEO narcissism and self-monitoring and the heuristics driven by CEOs’ motivation (regulatory foci) for certain courses of action. We found that narcissistic CEOs differ from self-monitoring CEOs when it comes to innovation. We found that, for self-monitoring CEOs, these effects are conditioned by the individuals’ underlying promotion and prevention motivation, but this is not the case for narcissistic CEOs. These findings contour our understanding of the immutability …

Discipline Or Damage? How Corporal Punishment Affects The Psychological Wellbeing Of Children In The School Setting, Umulkheir Mahamud Sharif Ali
Discipline Or Damage? How Corporal Punishment Affects The Psychological Wellbeing Of Children In The School Setting, Umulkheir Mahamud Sharif Ali
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Corporal punishment continues to be used in many homes and schools despite research linking it to negative psychological outcomes in children. Previous studies, primarily focused on home settings, have associated corporal punishment with increased anxiety, depression, aggression, and emotional distress. However, less research has examined how these outcomes appear within school environments, where discipline occurs in more structured institutional settings. This thesis investigates how corporal punishment in schools affects students psychologically, emotionally, and academically through a literature review of peer-reviewed studies from psychology, education, and public health. The findings show that many of the mental health outcomes associated with corporal …
The Brain Breakdown: Bringing Neuroscience To A Broader Audience, Katharine Buehrig
The Brain Breakdown: Bringing Neuroscience To A Broader Audience, Katharine Buehrig
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Neuroscience is a rapidly growing field, which needs to continue becoming more accessible and understandable to younger generations. Expanding access to neuroscience through different modes, such as podcasts, brings the discipline to a broader audience. Podcasts allow listeners to follow an outlined learning path they can pursue on their personal timeline. High school students often do not have access to neuroscience specific materials within their standard science curriculum. To address this knowledge gap, I collected questions about neuroscience from high school students across four schools in the United States to develop an understanding about what they are interested in learning. …
The Supreme Court And Climate Law: A Qualitative Analysis, Tanner Blackington
The Supreme Court And Climate Law: A Qualitative Analysis, Tanner Blackington
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper seeks to explore the Supreme Court’s understanding of climate justice and its evolution over time. I begin with an explanation of the context on climate law, climate change, and the Supreme Court as an institution. I situate the study in the literature on judicial restraint, institutional barriers, and the powers of the Supreme Court as focal points. Then, drawing on a sample of 20 Supreme Court opinions issued between 2007 and 2025, I offer an empirical analysis which reveals the Supreme Court’s feelings of confinement within the boundaries of federalism and balancing power with the Legislative and Executive …
A Timely Warning: Clock Drawing Errors In Young Adults And The Long-Term Validity Of Cognitive Screens, Alastair Smith, Sarah Salo
A Timely Warning: Clock Drawing Errors In Young Adults And The Long-Term Validity Of Cognitive Screens, Alastair Smith, Sarah Salo
School of Psychology
Objective: The clock drawing test (CDT) assesses multiple cognitive functions, including visuospatial construction and executive planning, and it is a core feature of many cognitive screens. Recent evidence indicates that young adults may experience difficulties producing an accurate response and we present a closer examination of generational differences in CDT performance in the context of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), where a notable failure rate was observed in our young adult respondents. Method: A total of 165 younger adults (18–35 years) and 53 healthy older adults (65–93 years) completed the MoCA as part of a larger study. CDT performance was …
Theatrical Roles: An Introduction To Theatre, Gibson A. Cima
Theatrical Roles: An Introduction To Theatre, Gibson A. Cima
Faculty Books & Book Chapters
- Theatrical Roles: An Introduction to Theatre is an open educational resource (OER) created by Gibson Alessandro Cima for Introduction to Theatre at Northern Illinois University. Published through the Humanities LibreTexts platform under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license, the textbook is designed as a free, accessible alternative to traditional introductory theatre textbooks.
Rather than organizing theatre history around a conventional Western canon, the OER approaches theatre through the major collaborative roles involved in production: playwright, director, performer, designer/technician, and audience. The structure emphasizes theatre as a collective human practice rather than a linear history of great men and canonical …
