Osteoarthritis, Social Role Participation, And Satisfaction With Life: A Quantitative Study Informed By The Social Identity Model Of Identity Change (Simic), Stephanie E. Rosado Mar 2024

Osteoarthritis, Social Role Participation, And Satisfaction With Life: A Quantitative Study Informed By The Social Identity Model Of Identity Change (Simic), Stephanie E. Rosado

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This cross-sectional survey study utilized an adapted version of the Social Identity Model of Identity Change (SIMIC) to investigate associations between post-diagnostic factors, role salience identity changes, and satisfaction with life for U.S. adults with osteoarthritis (OA). Data were collected from 193 adults with OA using ResearchMatch. Results suggest that role limitations significantly contributed to explaining variations in role salience identity. Furthermore, a positive relationship was observed between change in role salience identity and satisfaction with life. A moderated moderation analysis assessing the interaction effects of satisfaction with role performance and social support on the relationship between role salience identity …

From Punchlines To Pesto To Prada: Exploring Intellectual Property’S Negative Space, Michael Ecker Mar 2024

From Punchlines To Pesto To Prada: Exploring Intellectual Property’S Negative Space, Michael Ecker

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

Intellectual property (“IP”) law serves as the protective cornerstone for the creative industries—an especially important one at a time when unprecedented global connectivity links so many and in the process, so greatly heightens the potential for improper takings. Yet, a growing body of legal scholarship delves into a fascinating counterpoint: the “negative space” of IP. As Kal Raustiala and Christopher Sprigman posit in their Article, The Piracy Paradox, these creative endeavors “remain creative (and consequently do not require protection) precisely because they exhibit positionality sufficiently strong that it provokes a constant stream of new innovation.” This space encompasses creative fields …

Chapter 17. Spoken Discourse And Second Language Research, Midori Ishida Mar 2024

Chapter 17. Spoken Discourse And Second Language Research, Midori Ishida

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Spoken discourse is the primordial means by which humans engage in social life and it has been studied from an array of approaches with their own ontological and epistemological orientations to language and communication. The present chapter surveys two primary strands of research on spoken discourse involving second language speakers: (1) studies that approach discourse as a means of revealing second language speakers’ competences and their developmental trajectories, and (2) those that approach discourse as a site for second language learning. The views of competences have gone through diversification, from a focus on discourse competence for creating cohesive monologic text …

Caring, Teaching, Connecting, Learning: Phenomenological Insights Into The Teacher-Student Relationship In Sonography Education, Abigail Kurtz Mar 2024

Caring, Teaching, Connecting, Learning: Phenomenological Insights Into The Teacher-Student Relationship In Sonography Education, Abigail Kurtz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Teacher-student relationships are fundamental to teaching and learning and therefore must be understood, valued, developed, and nurtured. Guided by both hermeneutic phenomenology and relational pedagogy, my primary goal with this study was to achieve in-depth, interpretive understanding of the teacher-student relationship as experienced by sonography students. Through hermeneutic phenomenological interviews with eight recent graduates from a diagnostic medical sonography program, I explored participants’ perceptions of the teacher-student relationship (Research Question 1) and whether and how those relationships provided them with emotional and cognitive support (Research Questions 2 and 3). Hermeneutic phenomenological analysis of the data led to identification of the …

Women's Perspectives On Their Own Interest And Career Development In Male-Dominated Dental Specialties, Rachel Hamilton Mar 2024

Women's Perspectives On Their Own Interest And Career Development In Male-Dominated Dental Specialties, Rachel Hamilton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Dentistry has traditionally been a male-dominated profession. However, the past decade has seen a steady improvement in gender equality in dental schools around the United States. For the first time in 2018, the entering class in dental schools had more women enrolled than men. While women have achieved equality in receiving undergraduate dental education, they remain significantly underrepresented in advanced training of three dental specialties including endodontics, oral surgery, and periodontics. The purpose of this case study is to explore why women remain underrepresented in these specialties of the dental field by learning from six women’s personal experiences to understand …

Trauma-Informed Educational Practices: Perceptions Of Undergraduate Communication Sciences And Disorders Students, Lindsey J. Knussmann

Honors College Theses

Trauma is a prevalent issue among college students, with lasting negative effects on mental health, physical well-being, and academic performance. Despite this, literature exploring the application of trauma-informed education practices (TIEPs), specifically within the field of communication sciences and disorders (CSD), is limited. The purpose of this study was to address this literature gap by exploring which TIEPs CSD students find most beneficial.

Undergraduate students majoring in CSD participated in this research, rating the helpfulness of 12 TIEPs. Most participants reported perceiving all TIEPs as at least “very helpful”. These data represent a step toward improved understanding of the effects …

Changing The Culture Of Ecology From The Ground Up, Elsa Abs, Moira Hough Mar 2024

Changing The Culture Of Ecology From The Ground Up, Elsa Abs, Moira Hough

Michigan Tech Publications

We are two early career soil ecologists in academia who entered the field of soil ecology with the goal of studying soil-climate feedbacks to make meaningful contributions to climate change mitigation. Although our training and research extensively focused on the effects of climate change on soil ecosystems, we were not trained during our PhD nor incentivized as postdocs to work on solutions for climate change mitigation. So the question we ask here is: Given the consensus among ecologists about the urgency of the climate crisis, why is our field not promoting more solutions-oriented research in training and practice? In this …

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Objective With advancing age comes the increasing prevalence of frailty and increased risk of adverse outcomes (eg, hospitalisation). Evidence for comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA), a multidimensional holistic model of care, is mixed in community settings. Uncertainties remain, such as the key components of CGA, who delivers it, and the use of technology. This study aimed to understand the perspectives, beliefs and experiences, of both older people and health professionals, to improve the current CGA and explore factors that may impact on CGA delivery in community settings. Design A qualitative interview study was conducted with older people and healthcare professionals (HCPs) …

Links Between Couples’ Cynical Hostility And Mental Health: A Dyadic Investigation Of Older Couples, Dikla Segel-Karpas, Roi Estlein, Ashley E. Ermer Mar 2024

Links Between Couples’ Cynical Hostility And Mental Health: A Dyadic Investigation Of Older Couples, Dikla Segel-Karpas, Roi Estlein, Ashley E. Ermer

Department of Family Science and Human Development Scholarship and Creative Works

Whereas sharing a life with someone with high cynical hostility can be straining, little is known about how partner’s cynical hostility is associated with one’s mental health. In this paper, we report the findings from a longitudinal dyadic study using two waves of a large and representative American sample of older adults and their spouses to examine how one’s own and their spouse’s cynical hostility longitudinally affect anxiety and depressive symptoms. Results from APIM analyses suggest that both husbands’ and wives’ anxiety and depressive symptoms were negatively associated with their own cynical hostility, both within each time point and longitudinally. …

Open Notes In Psychotherapy: An Exploratory Mixed Methods Survey Of Psychotherapy Students In Switzerland, Anna Kharko, Sarah Buergler, Annika Bärkås, Maria Hägglund, Jens Gaab, Asbjørn Johansen Fagerlund, Cosima Locher, Charlotte Blease

School of Psychology

Background: In a growing number of countries, patients are offered access to their full online clinical records, including the narrative reports written by clinicians (the latter, referred to as “open notes”). Even in countries with mature patient online record access, access to psychotherapy notes is not mandatory. To date, no research has explored the views of psychotherapy trainees about open notes. Objective: This study aimed to explore the opinions of psychotherapy trainees in Switzerland about patients’ access to psychotherapists’ free-text summaries. Methods: We administered a web-based mixed methods survey to 201 psychotherapy trainees to explore their familiarity with and opinions …

Her Seat At The Table: A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Black Women Education Policymakers, Vickey R. Silas Mar 2024

Her Seat At The Table: A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Black Women Education Policymakers, Vickey R. Silas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This transcendental phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of Black women leaders as education policymakers to understand the essence of their journey to leadership positions and the impetus behind their decision-making. Despite progress, Black women remain marginalized and underrepresented in policymaking leadership roles and decision-making spaces (Griffin et. al, 2013). They face challenges that are intersectional like gender and race. My research question was what are the lived experiences of Black women education policymakers and how do these experiences impact their decision-making? While employing a transcendental phenomenological approach, I acknowledged my biases through reflexivity and bracketed them while also …

Well-Being And Contexts Of Development Of U.S. Citizen Children In Mexico Following Parental Deportation Or Voluntary Relocation, Luis H. Zayas, Alejandra Garcia Isaza, Jaime Fuentes-Balderrama, María Elena Rivera-Heredia

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

When undocumented immigrant parents are deported from the United States, they must decide whether or not to take their U.S.-born and undocumented immigrant children with them, often to countries the children have never visited or know little about. Other parents do not wait to be deported by the government and decide to relocate to their home countries with or without their children. Both sets of families experience relocation but under different circumstances. These differences deserve exploration to understand the psychological and emotional effects on children's well-being. In this cross-sectional study, we explored differences in self-concept, internalizing and externalizing behaviors, as …

Infusing Trauma-Informed Care In Career Counseling: Promising Practices And A Proposed Framework, Lisa M. Cardello, Galaxina G. Wright Mar 2024

Infusing Trauma-Informed Care In Career Counseling: Promising Practices And A Proposed Framework, Lisa M. Cardello, Galaxina G. Wright

Trauma Counseling and Resilience

The impact of trauma on career development is well-documented and includes effects on career decision, stability, and unemployment. However, literature on trauma-informed interventions in the career counseling setting is scarce and a universal model for providing career counseling with a trauma-informed lens does not currently exist. Therefore, the authors discuss existing literature on trauma-informed care and application for career counseling. An integrated framework for trauma-informed career counseling, the HEART model, is proposed and includes five components: (a) instilling hope, (b) establishing safety, (c) recognizing and responding to chronic stress, (d) building resilience, and (e) the importance of engaging in ongoing …

Trauma Curriculum Integration In Counselor Education: A Delphi Study, Jaimee York, Adrienne Baggs, Laura Schmuldt, Nancy Sherman Mar 2024

Trauma Curriculum Integration In Counselor Education: A Delphi Study, Jaimee York, Adrienne Baggs, Laura Schmuldt, Nancy Sherman

Trauma Counseling and Resilience

Research has established the need for trauma education and training for safe and effective entry-level practice. However, studies have shown insufficient and inconsistent training in graduate counseling programs. Those studies reflected the opinions and experiences of practitioners and graduate students. To add to the extant literature, we used the Delphi method to gather information from counselor educators who have experience in trauma counseling and education. The Delphi technique is a group communication strategy designed to obtain expert consensus through a series of survey questionnaires, modified and adapted to reflect group opinion. We asked participants for their insight into the most …

College Student Stress And Resilience During Covid-19, Kevin A. Doyle, Karissa Peyer, Liz Hathaway, Hannah Turner, Dorinda Harriss

Trauma Counseling and Resilience

The COVID-19 pandemic had a drastic impact on the wellness of college students. In this study, researchers examined levels of stressful events, perceived stress, and resilience in a sample of 312 students at a Southeastern university. Students demonstrated a high volume of stressful events, lower levels of resilience, and high levels of perceived stress. The combination of stressful events and resilience explained a significant amount of the variance in perceived stress. Implications are included.
