The Impact Of Household Preparedness And Work-Family Conflict On Medic-Firefighter Ability And Willingness To Respond For Duty In A Disaster, Joshua S. Simmons
The Impact Of Household Preparedness And Work-Family Conflict On Medic-Firefighter Ability And Willingness To Respond For Duty In A Disaster, Joshua S. Simmons
Dissertations
There is a general assumption in disaster planning that emergency responders will respond for duty in any emergency or disaster. Role abandonment by medic-firefighters could impede an organization’s ability to effectively manage the impact of a disaster. This study investigated household preparedness and work-family conflict levels, identified as primary variables affecting ability and willingness to respond in the literature. The aim was to determine if these factors impacted the ability and willingness of medic-firefighters in a coastal Virginia fire department to respond during disaster scenarios. The results showed that emergency preparedness levels were low, and that there were moderate levels …

Byu Online Language Team On-Boarding Training, Iolanda Costa
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
In the early stages of departmental training (2018-2019), BYU-O instructional designers (IDs) focused on developing a Canvas training course to meet diverse needs and equip their student employees, also known as instructional design assistants (IDAs). However, the incorporation of specific needs and skills for the language team was postponed. The purpose of this project was to optimize and unify the training process to address the BYU-O Language Team needs and develop a training experience for all teams.
Bridging The Need-To-Access Gap: Examining Parents Who Perceive A Need For Their Youth To Receive Mental Health Services, Alexandra Bowling
Bridging The Need-To-Access Gap: Examining Parents Who Perceive A Need For Their Youth To Receive Mental Health Services, Alexandra Bowling
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Parents often act as gatekeepers to their children and adolescents receiving mental health services. Youth help-seeking models propose that three parent-focused factors (perceptions of their youth’s illness profile, predisposing characteristics, and enabling resources) impact each stage of the help-seeking process: problem recognition (i.e., perceived needers), decision to seek help (i.e., treatment intenders), and service selection and utilization (i.e., treatment utilizers). Research is needed that examines how the above factors relate to parents getting “stuck” in the help-seeking process (i.e., do not become treatment utilizers). The current study investigated whether predisposing characteristics (i.e., family and demographic characteristics, mental health attitudes and …
Advanced Machine Learning Approaches For Predicting Mental Health Disorders Following Long Covid Diagnosis, Manoj Purohit
Advanced Machine Learning Approaches For Predicting Mental Health Disorders Following Long Covid Diagnosis, Manoj Purohit
Master's Theses (2009 -)
After the global spread of COVID-19, the enduring effects of Long COVID and its health implications have emerged as a significant global issue, affecting people worldwide. The lingering symptoms post a COVID-19 infection can significantly affect individuals who had previously contracted the virus, exerting considerable influence over their mental well-being. Prolonged recuperation associated with Long COVID has been connected with the emergence of symptoms such as depression and anxiety, all of which can have adverse effects on emotional health. This project delves into an in-depth analysis of healthcare data pertaining to Long COVID from the Froedtert Health (FH) Medical System …

"Silent Revolution": The Rockefeller Foundation's Invisible Influence On The Model Penal Code, Daniel Butler Friedman
Articles & Chapters
For over a hundred years, rich families have been channeling their wealth through private foundations to remake American society, but their immense impact on the law is still poorly understood. This article begins to fill that gap by studying the almost completely unknown origins of one of the most important reforms in the history of American criminal law: the Model Penal Code ("MPC"). To show how the MPC was influenced by its primary funder this article presents unpublished documents from the archives of two of the most important private organizations in American law: the American Law Institute ("ALI") and the …

Spanning Literacy Instruction: A Wikipedia Editing Assignment In An Upper-Level Biochemistry Course, Iris Finkel, Frida E. Kleiman
Publications and Research
The authors, a chemistry professor and a librarian, used a qualitative survey to assess student perceptions of a Wikipedia editing assignment that they included in a large upper-level biochemistry course. The assignment was initially intended as a public-facing alternative to a short research paper, emphasizing information literacy and scientific literacy. The goal of the survey was to use the results to enhance the assignment. The results of the survey and research for the literature review inspired a novel approach to the assignment using the perspective of metaliteracy. This approach encourages students to think critically about their role as scholars in …

Objectives
The EQ Health and Wellbeing (EQ-HWB) is a novel measure that conceptually overlaps with the 5-level EQ-5D (EQ-5D-5L) while capturing broader dimensions of health and well-being. This study aimed to explore the extent to which the EQ-HWB and EQ-5D-5L capture overlapping or complementary constructs and to explore the discriminative ability of the EQ-HWB Short version (EQ-HWB-S) as a multiattribute utility instrument in the Australian setting. Methods
A secondary analysis of data from a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of 2002 Australian adults was performed. The survey included socioeconomic questions and health characteristics and the EQ-HWB and EQ-5D-5L instruments. Convergent and …Responses To Sexual Assault Survivors And Sexual Assault Evidence Kits, Loganne Ditter, April N. Terry
Responses To Sexual Assault Survivors And Sexual Assault Evidence Kits, Loganne Ditter, April N. Terry
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Sexual assault and rape in the U.S. are an ongoing public health issue. While approximately one-fifth of individuals will experience a sexual assault or rape in their lifetime, responses to survivors continues to be problematic. Many law enforcement agencies lack training specific to interact with sexual assault survivors, which can result in victim-blaming and oversight of trauma-informed responses. For sexual assault evidence kit (SAEK) completion, nurses can receive expert certification for this examination; however, in rural areas where all services are limited, survivors may not have access to such professionals. These struggles may result in SAEK issues in addition to …

Cultivating Confidence: The Impact Of Goal Setting And Self Assessment On Self- Efficacy Among At-Risk Secondary Students In English Language Arts, Stevie Marie Miles Gonzales
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
If students perceive themselves as successful readers and communicators, then their self-efficacy in the academic arena will shift, increasing motivation and achievement in turn. Interventions established to support self-efficacy among at-risk students may improve their chances of secondary completion and this will have a positive impact not only for students currently in our schools, but also for their future success and the success of our wider communities. This quantitative two group study was designed to examine whether individual goal setting when paired with self assessment could positively impact at-risk secondary -efficacy in ELA for grade 10. Self-efficacy was measured using …

Until now, it has been difficult to examine the neural bases of foraging in naturalistic environments because previous approaches have relied on restrained animals performing trial-based foraging tasks. Here we allowed unrestrained monkeys to freely interact with concurrent reward options while we wirelessly recorded population activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The animals decided when and where to forage based on whether their prediction of reward was fulfilled or violated. This prediction was not solely based on a history of reward delivery, but also on the understanding that waiting longer improves the chance of reward. The task variables were continuously …

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a complex disease and the leading cause of dementia in older people. We aimed to uncover aspects of AD’s pathogenesis that may contribute to drug repurposing efforts by integrating DNA methylation and genetic data. Implementing the network-based tool, a dense module search of genome-wide association studies (dmGWAS), we integrated a large-scale GWAS dataset with DNA methylation data to identify gene network modules associated with AD. Our analysis yielded 286 significant gene network modules. Notably, the foremost module included the BIN1 gene, showing the largest GWAS signal, and the GNAS gene, the most significantly hypermethylated. We conducted …

The rate of progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) differs dramatically between patients. Identifying the most is critical because when their numbers differ between treated and control groups, it distorts the outcome, making it impossible to tell whether the treatment was beneficial. Much recent effort, then, has gone into identifying RPs. We pooled de-identified placebo-arm data of three randomized controlled trials (RCTs), EXPEDITION, EXPEDITION 2, and EXPEDITION 3, provided by Eli Lilly and Company. After processing, the data included 1603 mild-to-moderate AD patients with 80 weeks of longitudinal observations on neurocognitive health, brain volumes, and amyloid-beta (Aβ) levels. RPs were defined …

Bounded Entities And (Some Of) Their Discontents, Saurabh Vishnubhakat
Bounded Entities And (Some Of) Their Discontents, Saurabh Vishnubhakat
Articles
In his new article An Organizational Theory of International Technology Transfer, Professor Peter Lee offers two richly detailed accounts at once. One is a novel theoretical framework of "bounded entities" that generalizes both from the classic theory of the firm and, of more recent vintage, from the knowledge-based theory of the firm to specify a broader notion of organizations that are bounded in the sense of robust internal integration through corporate or contractual means. In short, such entities are not firms but resemble them in consequential ways. The other account is a practical elaboration of bounded entities that are multinational …

Post-secondary transition is a significant phase in the life of high school students with special needs. Special education teachers play a crucial role in supporting students in this process. This study aims at exploring the perspectives of special education teachers on transitioning high school students with special needs into university. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four special education teachers in Al Ain city in the United Arab Emirates. The teachers were asked questions on four themes: their skills on postsecondary transition, their post-secondary transition planning, the barriers they face during post-secondary transition, and finally the facilitation of smooth post-secondary transition …
Open Source Perfume, Amanda Levendowski
Open Source Perfume, Amanda Levendowski
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
ABRIDGED ABSTRACT: Perfume is a powerful art and technology, but its secrets are closely held by a privileged few - by some counts, there are more astronauts than there are perfumers. As critics have noted increasingly since 2020, those select few perfumers often share similar backgrounds. As interviews with American, British, and French perfumemakers reveal, intellectual property (IP) also plays a gatekeeping role in perfumery. Drawing on work by perfumer and educator Saskia Wilson-Brown, this Article suggests that perfumery is overdue for a transformation. One is emerging: open source perfume. For those seeking ways to share scents and signal commitment …

Working Memory Gating In Obesity: Insights From A Case-Control Fmri Study, Nadine Herzog, Hendrik Hartmann, Lieneke K. Janssen, Maria Waltmann, Sean J. Fallon, Lorenz Deserno, Annette Horstmann
School of Psychology
Computational models and neurophysiological data propose that a ‘gating mechanism’ coordinates distractor-resistant maintenance and flexible updating of working memory contents: While maintenance of information is mainly implemented in the prefrontal cortex, updating of information is signaled by phasic increases in dopamine in the striatum. Previous literature demonstrates structural and functional alterations in these brain areas, as well as differential dopamine transmission among individuals with obesity, suggesting potential impairments in these processes. To test this hypothesis, we conducted an observational case-control fMRI study, dividing participants into groups with and without obesity based on their BMI. We probed maintenance and updating of …

Effects Of Fundamentals Of Culture On Teacher-Student Relationship In Middle School: A Quantitative Correlation Study, Laura L. Chang
Education Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore whether teacher-student relationships could be strengthened if we knew what impacted the cultural background of middle school teachers. Using a quantitative correlation research design and a multiple linear regression analysis, I examined the relationship between one dependent variable, Teacher-Student Relationship (TSR) and four predictor variables, Individualism versus Collectivism (IvC), Monochronic versus Polychronic values (MvP), Universalism versus Particularism (UvP), and Activism versus Fatalism (AvF). This research relied on prior studies centered around teacher-student relationship, the theory of cultural humility (Foronda, 2020), and values orientation theory (Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck, 1961). The analysis explored teacher-student …

A Case Study Of The Organizational System Of Articulation At A Midwestern Regional Public University, Katherine J. Giardello
Dissertations
Quantitative research has long shown lagging community college transfer student completion rates, in addition to excess credits earned and lengthened time-to-degree for transfer students that do earn a bachelor’s degree (Horn & Skomsvold, 2011; Jenkins & Fink, 2016; Simone, 2014; U.S. GAO, 2017). Scant qualitative studies exist related to student transfer, particularly the academic enterprise of articulation and the university perspective on transfer.
This qualitative study takes up the cause, using organizational and systems theories (Birnbaum, 1988; Clark, 1983; Cohen & March, 1974; Morgan, 2006; Senge, 1990; von Bertalanffy, 1972; Weick, 1976) to frame a single site case study with …

A Building Block Of Empathy: Establishing A Graphic Medicine Collection In An Academic Health Sciences Library., Jess King, Alison Bobal
Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library
To help address the well-being of the campus and contribute to empathy building amongst students pursuing careers as healthcare providers, an academic health sciences library built a graphic novel collection focused on comics that discuss medical conditions and health-related topics. The collection contains the experiences of patients, providers, and caregivers. The reader-friendly format of graphic novels provides an easy entry point for discussing empathy with health professions faculty and students. The collection has been used in the classroom during library instruction sessions, with the idea of integrating it within the curriculum.

Towards Learning Excellence In Universities: A Critical Review Of Information And Communication Technology Policies In Education In Kenya, Caroline Kiarie, Nicola-Jane Jones
Graduate School of Media and Communications
The current reality is that technological advancement has shaped how learning is being conducted in education. Communication technology has been embraced in education by both educators and learners. However, the embracement has been slow, and this was experienced during the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, when teaching and learning had to shift and relied heavily on communication technology, but in actuality educational institutions were not ready. The virus continues to linger on and has served as a wake-up call for the education sector. This therefore makes Information and Communication Technology (ICT) an essential component in education today, not only to be implemented …

Social Participation Program For Older Adults With Dementia Residing In Long Term Care Facilities, Keri Mcclelland
Student Capstone Papers
Social participation is characterized by activities that involve social interaction with others and supports social interdependence; individuals engage in this occupation through a variety of contexts including with their community, family, friends, and peers (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2020). Social participation has been discovered to influence general health and well-being, cognitive health, risk of dementia, and stress (Sommerlad et al., 2023). Dementia is a prevalent disease affecting approximately 50 million individuals worldwide (Sommerlad et al., 2023) causing increased dependence and disability among the older adult population and is shown to be growing as the aging population increases in number (Wang …

No, You Can't Just Peek In Their Brain To See Their Future, Alia Barcus
Tredway Library Prize for First-Year Research
This paper argues against the use of predictive cognitive neuroscience research in judicial processes. Barcus argues that, because predictive models do not adequately address the “whys” of behavior and are better suited to macro-scale processes rather than individual-level predictions, they can only provide “a crude idea of future behavior” at best and will be bias-laden and inaccurate at worst. Meanwhile, neuroscience brain imaging is a newly-developing field and relies on small-scale studies, a combination that creates little replicability and presents deeply-flawed outcomes when this research is used as a basis for criminal prosecution. Barcus concludes that this scholarship, while holding …

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion In Nurse Anesthesia: Bridging The Gap, Aminat Yusuff-Akinbo
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion In Nurse Anesthesia: Bridging The Gap, Aminat Yusuff-Akinbo
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The nurse anesthetist plays a crucial role in the healthcare system. Through intensive training, they provide safe and effective anesthesia care to patients across various healthcare settings. Currently, the nurse anesthesia field lacks diversity, with underrepresentation of minority groups such as Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous individuals. The United States Census revealed that there are more than 325 million residents. Yet only 10.9% of nurse anesthetists are of diverse racial backgrounds. This lack of diversity limits the cultural perspectives and experiences brought to patient care and perpetuates disparities in healthcare outcomes. An increase in diversity can improve care for individuals and …
