Icebergs melting; plastic in the oceans; greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere; deforestation; industrial agriculture; pollution; overfishing. Humans have inhabited Earth for a mere fraction of its existence, comprising less than 1% of its total timeline, yet we are rapidly destroying it. The health of our planet is at a tipping point. Poets have been writing about the disharmony between the environment and humans for hundreds of years. Writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne plead us to change our ways through their haunting and ghastly works, while Jane Hirshfield and others speak through animals to hold us accountable for our faults. However, not …

When faced with the climate crisis, we humans have responded with varying levels of distress. Most of us swing between despair, when we fall into grief at our own stupidity and possible doom, and hope, that a solution is right around the corner. There is a middle ground of apathy, for those who’ve lost all hope and/or become paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of the climate crisis. Regardless of where we are, life under the climate crisis is not easy, and we all need to be reminded that it’s worth going on from time to time. Ironically, many of us …

Beyond Technology: Social Predictors Of Energy Efficiency In Industrial Facilities, Garret B. Cowdery
Beyond Technology: Social Predictors Of Energy Efficiency In Industrial Facilities, Garret B. Cowdery
Honors Theses
Energy is the lifeblood of the industrialized world with electrical energy expected by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to increase 25% between 2016 to 2050 in the United States. Combined with the ever-present climate crisis, energy-efficient buildings are becoming increasingly important to conserve resources and alleviate strain on aging energy systems. The Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) program through the US Department of Energy aims to reduce the consumption of large, single-site energy users, industrial and commercial buildings, through comprehensive energy audits. Such investigations find that energy-efficient structures are a technological challenge as much as social. The mentality of building …
Behavioral Responses Of Two Color Morphs Of The Eastern Red-Backed Salamander (Plethodon Cinereus) To Novel Urban Environments, Amy Q. Friemoth
Behavioral Responses Of Two Color Morphs Of The Eastern Red-Backed Salamander (Plethodon Cinereus) To Novel Urban Environments, Amy Q. Friemoth
Honors Theses
Human modified landscapes can provide challenging new environments that can lead to rapid changes in species traits. In temperate forest ecosystems, salamanders play a critical role in forest floor dynamics, but populations are now faced with rapid habitat change, which can lead to local extinction events unless species can adapt behaviorally. The Eastern Red-backed Salamander, Plethodon cinereus, is the most common salamander species in the northeastern United States and can serve as a model species for examining the effects of anthropogenic change. Further, the Eastern Red-backed Salamander poses two common color morphs (striped and unstriped) that appear to differ in …
The Effect Of Threat Perception On Judging Interpersonal Distance, Connor N. Kuntz
The Effect Of Threat Perception On Judging Interpersonal Distance, Connor N. Kuntz
Honors Theses
This study examined the potential impact of threat perception on judgments of interpersonal distance. A growing body of research suggests that the perception of space and objects within space can be impacted by non-visual factors. For instance, research illustrates a connection between threat perception and spatial judgments, in that objects that pose a danger are seen as being closer or farther than they really are. Stereotypes, which are generalized beliefs about a group, can result in threat perception, which, by extension, means that stereotypes could impact the perception of interpersonal distance. The perceived distance between oneself and another object or …

Theses
This paper analyzes the work of Catherine Opie and Sally Mann, white, contemporary artist mothers. Using the narrative and auto-ethnographic research methodologies and applying feminist theory, queer theory, and mother studies, this paper will investigate how contemporary photography is confronted with the work of artist mothers that utilize their mothering roles and status of mothers as a muse into their photographic work. The concept of truth in photography is explored in its role of playing into the visualization of the discomforts of representation within the work of the unseen mother in Sally Mann’s Immediate Family series and dismantling of stereotyped …

It Takes A Special Person To Raise A Special Needs Child: How New York's Existing Family Regulation Systems Are Not Equipped For Children With Autism, Alexandra Debenedictis
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note argues that New York's current family regulation systems, including the Family Court Act (FCA) and the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), are inadequately equipped to protect children with autism in foster care. These systems fail to address the unique needs of autistic children, leading to increased vulnerability to abuse, neglect, and prolonged stays in foster care. The note proposes reforms to improve monitoring, education, and resource accessibility to better safeguard these children.

This study explores the cognitive process of creating a design for a single Tarot card, concentrating on the relationship between the visual (non-verbal, spatial) and verbal (linear) elements involved in the process. The research uncovered that linear and non-linear (visual) cognitive strategies are employed in synergy during the conception and creation of the artwork. The most notable result of the research is that immediate, pre-reflective and non-verbal experiencing has undeniable primacy over verbal, conceptual thinking. Verbalising thoughts is interchangeable with analytical, critical, symbolic, and linear cognitive strategy (“rational”). However, the context, interrelationships, and, ultimately, meaning are provided by integrating the …

Second Language Acquisition For General Educators: An Accessible Professional Development Course, Angela Cabreana
Second Language Acquisition For General Educators: An Accessible Professional Development Course, Angela Cabreana
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This capstone project was built in response to the research question “How can general education educators learn the process of language acquisition in an accessible way?” With the population of multilingual learners (MLs) in public schools steadily increasing and teacher preparation programs often not preparing teachers for these students, many general education teachers are looking for professional development (PD) on best practices for teaching MLs. Thus the idea for developing a free, asynchronous website professional development course that instructs general educators on the process of second language acquisition (SLA) was born. The literature review explores the theories and processes that …

This capstone project explores how a well-structured and supportive school environment can impact students socially, emotionally and academically. I want to shed light on the importance of inclusion, connection, and community within a school, and the positive ripple effects it has on students as individuals. The literature review provides more information about student relationships, benefits of positive relationships, students' sense of belonging, and positive reinforcement systems. Chapter three provides a description of the project and how I plan to share and implement my project with my colleagues. The focus of my project is to provide teachers with ways to develop …
Spanish-Speaking English Learners’ Experience In Spanish/English Dual Language Immersion Schools, Sara Worthington
Spanish-Speaking English Learners’ Experience In Spanish/English Dual Language Immersion Schools, Sara Worthington
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Research has demonstrated that dual language immersion (DLI) schools provide one of the most viable pathways for students of families who speak a language other than English to maintain and develop their home language proficiencies while also learning and improving their proficiencies in English. The professional development (PD) designed for this project focuses on maximizing the English instruction time in Spanish/English dual language immersion schools. Across the United States, the number of DLI programs has increased dramatically in the past few decades yet often the educators employed in the programs have little or no specific training in teaching English as …

Self-Regulated Learning For English Language Learners In Asynchronous Online Community College Courses, Nicole Olalde
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The number of students who take asynchronous online courses has soared, notably since the onset of COVID in 2020. Success in these courses requires a significant amount of self-discipline. Students who struggle in this context have cited a lack of support, feelings of isolation, and difficulties regulating their learning. For adult English language learners, (ELLs) this is an additional burden because they are taking post-secondary education courses in a language that is not their first language. There is a positive correlation between the use of self-regulated learning (SRL) and academic performance. The ability of students to self-regulate accounts for a …

Math Educators, Positive Student Mindsets, And Math Centers, Riki Baker
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
It is a math educator’s job to help each student develop academic, emotional, behavioral, and social skills in a supportive and rigorous instructional environment. Reinforcing a growth mindset is the pinnacle of successful teaching and learning. However, there are always experiences that deter students from feeling like they can become successful in an area or multiple areas. Instructional time can become feared and mindsets can become fixed. It could even potentially become a lifelong source of trauma. Math is perhaps one of the most notorious content areas that induce feelings of fear, failure, and perpetual condemnation. Teaching strategies play an …

How Student Name Choice Affects Identity, Raquel Hunt
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Over the years, research on language and identity has been abundant in the field of sociolinguistics. This capstone reviewed some of the background literature on language and identity as well as more recent literature on how multilingual learners’ identities are affected by what name they choose to be called at school and what teachers actually call them. A few themes emerged: multilingual learners have difficulty with non-English names in school, multilingual learners and their families consider many factors as they choose a name to use at school, and teachers can profoundly impact students’ identities by the way they treat student …

Culturally Responsive Professional Development: Facilitating Transformational Learning Experiences, Kiana Erickson
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Non Profit Organizations that engage culturally diverse populations as volunteers need support in delivering volunteer training that meets the learning needs of culturally diverse adults. Due to lack of staff capacity, non profit organizations often rely on cohorts of volunteers to train their peers in executing responsibilities of the volunteer roles. These volunteers often do not have background in adult learning nor do they have tools related to engaging culturally diverse groups of adult learners. This capstone aims to answer the question: How can adult educators and trainers use culturally responsive engagement strategies and emerging frameworks to effectively facilitate professional …

The History Of The Philosophy Of Science And Its Impacts On Modern Science Education, Rebecca Steele
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This capstone project explores the question of the philosophical ideas that have given rise to modern conventions of teaching and learning science, and what alternatives exist to these methods. By exploring the philosophies that underpin our modern methods of science teaching and learning, and how have they come to dominate the space of scientific thought, the author has created a website resource for teachers to use for professional development, to learn about the philosophical history of science, in order to fully understand the reasons why science operates within specifically empirical and mechanistic paradigms. The project includes an interactive historical timeline …

Dipl 6277 Global Health, Bioterrorism, And International Security, Yanzhong Huang Phd
Diplomacy Syllabi
This course is an interdisciplinary survey that focuses on the issues of global health security. As shown in the COVID-19 pandemic, international trade and travel threaten epidemics by transporting and spreading infectious disease globally at jet speed. The growing risk of exposure to infectious diseases, coupled with the threat of intentional release of dangerous pathogens, creates a situation in which health and security are interacting with greater frequency and intensity. This development parallels efforts to redefine the concept of security to encompass new global challenges such as noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). To what extent does health fit this new security agenda? …
