Chapter 10: Increasing Accessibility In Educational Simulations, Meaghan Mcleod Apr 2024

Chapter 10: Increasing Accessibility In Educational Simulations, Meaghan Mcleod

Instructional Message Design, Volume 3

Simulations are an important aspect of education and training. They provide the learner with situations that mirror real life situations or provide access to unobservable phenomena. The simulations provide the learner with a unique opportunity to master skills through the use of and practice in a safe environment. However, many simulations are not designed with accessibility and accommodations in mind. This chapter provides a general overview of simulations and provides suggestions on how to increase accessibility and enhance the learning experience for all learners.

Chapter 06. Instructional Message Design For Adult Learners, Pamela J. Smith-Downing

Instructional Message Design, Volume 3

As stated in Chapter 1, message design is all around us, from the presentations we see in meetings and classes, to the instructions that come with our latest tech gadgets, to multi-million-dollar training simulations. The instructional message design field of study pulls from many applied sciences, including cognitive psychology, industrial design, graphic design, instructional design, information technology, and human performance technology, to name just a few. In this chapter, we will visit several adult learning theories and examples that guide our research into adult learning, look at different real-world instructional message designs for adult learners, and discuss directions for future …

Chapter 02: Multimedia Learning Theory And Instructional Message Design, Miguel Ramlatchan Apr 2024

Chapter 02: Multimedia Learning Theory And Instructional Message Design, Miguel Ramlatchan

Instructional Message Design, Volume 3

Multimedia learning theory describes how the designers of instructional messages, systems and learning environments can optimize learning. The principles and heuristics of multimedia learning theory have application in traditional and online environments, with young and adult learners, in K-12, higher education, military, corporate, government, and informal learning environments. This diversity of application is based on the foundational premise that all learners can independently process auditory and visual information, have limited working memory resources, and require cognitive resources to process new information and to learn. This chapter describes the basic tenets of multimedia learning theory, best practices that can improve our …

A Visual Workflow For Cataloging, Arden Kirkland, Minor Gordon Apr 2024

A Visual Workflow For Cataloging, Arden Kirkland, Minor Gordon

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Our digital collections team took on the challenge to improve the tools and processes of cataloging. We began to explore how we could build features that helped students into a cataloging worksheet tool, under development at DressDiscover.org. After our initial development of the tool, we looked back and realized just how much Universal Design for Learning (UDL) had influenced our design, although we had not consciously intended that from the start. Our assessment of the project through a UDL lens was at first extremely affirming, helping us to note many ways that our work already supported all three of …

Let's Get Critical: The Rights And Obligations Of School District Stakeholders Under State Laws Limiting Or Banning Discussion Of Critical Race Theory In K-12 Classrooms, John E. Rumel

BYU Education & Law Journal

Critical Race Theory has moved from the halls of academia to the center of a national debate about the role of teachers in instructing students about race, race relations and the United States’ troubled history concerning those subjects. Addressing growing concerns over Critical Race Theory from the political right, state legislatures have responded quickly by enacting a host of Anti-Critical Race Theory (anti-CRT) bills that seek to expel Critical Race Theory from the classroom.

Rethinking Plagiarism In The Era Of Generative Ai, James Hutson Apr 2024

Rethinking Plagiarism In The Era Of Generative Ai, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, such as large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, has precipitated a paradigm shift in the realms of academic writing, plagiarism, and intellectual property. This article explores the evolving landscape of English composition courses, traditionally designed to develop critical thinking through writing. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into the academic sphere, it necessitates a reevaluation of originality in writing, the purpose of learning research and writing, and the frameworks governing intellectual property (IP) and plagiarism. The paper commences with a statistical analysis contrasting the actual use of LLMs in academic dishonesty with educator …

The science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) approach is one of the approaches to teaching integrative science contextually and to promote science literacy, which is identified to remain low among Indonesian students. Applying STEM projects to grade 8 students has been challenging during the pandemic. Thus, there is a need to develop an online STEM project that accommodates learning at home or distance learning, is suitable during the pandemic, and incorporates training to improve science literacy. Therefore, we developed a STEM@Home Learning Design by adopting the Flower STEM-Approach Design using the topic of vibration, wave, and sound. This study aims …

Business As Ministry In The Us Rural Midwest For The Common Good, Eric Zhong-Ming Ma

Business as Mission Theses and Dissertations

The rural Midwest region of the United States serves as a significant locus for American history, culture, and faith, in addition to being renowned as the nation’s primary agricultural hub for maize and soybeans production. Nevertheless, the prevailing body of literature pertaining to the integration of business and Christian ministry for the common good predominantly represented the viewpoints of individuals engaged in international missions or those involved in urban settings regarding the underlying purposes of business. Limited knowledge existed regarding the practices and perceptions of business as ministry stakeholders in the rural Midwestern United States concerning the concept of the …

Dipl 3201 Aa/Ab Sustainable Development, Nabeela N. Alam Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

The Covid-19 pandemic and climate change are the defining crises of our times. The pandemic has laid bare the fault lines in unequal access to healthcare, vaccines, resources, safe workplaces, and ability to work from home. Socially and economically disadvantaged groups are most at risk of contracting the virus as a result and are also most at risk from the impacts of climate change. Unmanaged growth and a singular focus on the economy aggravates climate change, which in turn hurt growth and development. What sound, evidence-based policies can we use to address these dilemmas?

This undergraduate course in sustainable development …

Anxiety And Stress Relief For Youth, Tricia J. W. Varner

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

The project that I chose to do for my capstone project was to create an interactive workbook for youth to help them understand anxiety and stress. I found that there was a need for youth to have a tool to learn to cope with anxiety and stress. The words anxiety and stress have both become buzzwords amongst middle school and high school students, but do they really understand what it is and how to deal with it? This workbook will give them an arsenal of tools and resources to assist them with learning more about these buzzwords and most importantly, …

Para Descubrir El Mármol En La Niebla: El Teatro De Ruiz Pleguezuelos Y El Rechazo De La Subjetivación Tecnológica, Albert David Hitchcock

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Divided By Design? Urban Renewal's Differential Impacts On Economic Outcomes By Race, Derik Suria Apr 2024

Divided By Design? Urban Renewal's Differential Impacts On Economic Outcomes By Race, Derik Suria

2024 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

This paper focuses on urban renewal in Chicago. There is remarkable continuity within the roots of urban renewal; many renewal projects were based on plans by large corporations, businesses, merchants, and other entities with substantial involvement and stake in urban center real estate. The implicit relationship between powerful business owners and city planners demonstrated how urban renewal supported a mutually beneficial, and even symbiotic relationship. Resources from the Claremont Colleges Library helped me to research my senior thesis and led me to take an interdisciplinary and novel approach toward the impacts of urban renewal from an individual and city-level perspective.
