Abnormal Neural Sensitivity To Rewards As A Candidate Process Of High Depression Risk In The Fmr1 Premutation: A Pilot Study, Roslyn Harold, Bridgette Kelleher, Keisha Novak, Wei Siong Neo, Teagan Stump, Taylor Lee, Tessa Garwood, Elizabeth Berry-Kravis, Dan Foti

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

The etiological heterogeneity of depression poses a challenge for prevention and intervention efforts. One solution is to map unique etiological pathways for subgroups defined by a singular risk factor. A relevant population for this approach is women who carry the premutation of the fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1) gene, who are at high risk for adult-onset depression. This study explores a candidate neurophysiological marker of depression risk: reduced reward sensitivity, indexed by the reward positivity (RewP). The RewP has been linked to depression risk in the general population, but is unexplored within FMR1 premutation carriers. 16 women with the …

Religion, Commercialism, And Identity In Equiano And Douglass's "Narratives", Ashley Mueth Apr 2024

Religion, Commercialism, And Identity In Equiano And Douglass's "Narratives", Ashley Mueth

Research Papers

Slave narratives, involving enslaved persons, tell the personal accounts of the lives and struggles faced by Africans during the slave trade. From the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, the abolitionist movement evolved, resulting in anti-slavery campaigns across the United States and Europe. In this paper, I will analyze two renowned slave narratives, first Olaudah Equiano’s The Interesting Narrative and secondly, Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life. I argue that in Equiano’s discourses he appeals to authority figures to advocate against slavery, however Douglass distrusts authority figures and determines that slaveowners are complicit in maintaining systems of oppression. This article addresses …

Using Therapeutic Writing To Deconstruct Recovery From Postraumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd), Pamela Phillips Apr 2024

Using Therapeutic Writing To Deconstruct Recovery From Postraumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd), Pamela Phillips

Dissertations

Exposure to physical and psychological trauma has produced a post-millennial epoch of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a debilitating anxiety disorder that occurs after exposure to an extreme stressor or prolonged victimization. After an extensive review of treatment protocols in 2008, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) exhorted clinicians to focus on defining the concept of recovery, concentrating on symptom reduction, removal of the PTSD diagnosis, and end-state function. Although the IOM report mobilized large-scale efforts to quantify treatments and standardize delivery of treatment protocols, PTSD recovery remains a concept that has been largely unexplored. The primary aim of this study was …

Electrochemical Phosphorus Recovery From The Anaerobically Digested Sludge: Mechanism, Performance, Application, And Solids Disposal, Zixuan Wang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Phosphorus (P) is life’s bottleneck element and an essential nutrient for food production. However, phosphate rock is a non-renewable resource and its geological distribution is highly uneven, making P recovery a crucial step for a circular economy. Approximately 55% of mined phosphorus ends up in centralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), where up to 90% is captured in the sludge. This sludge, treated in anaerobic digesters to produce anaerobically digested sludge (ADS), emerges as a viable secondary source for phosphorus recovery. Recovering phosphorus from ADS typically involves leaching and separation. Leaching mobilizes phosphates from sludge solid phase into a liquid phase, …

A Review Of Existing Literature Surrounding Female Educator Sexual Misconduct In Anglo-American Classrooms, Avery Barnes, Isaac Calvert

BYU Education & Law Journal

A 2004 literature review commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education estimated that one in every ten students would experience sexual harassment or abuse at the hands of an educator during their time in public schools. Even more alarming, multiple studies within Shakeshaft’s 2004 review suggested that this issue goes well beyond the reported data. At that time, leading social science research estimated that only 6% of children who were victims of educator sexual misconduct reported it. With significant developments in digital communications technologies since that 2004 study, researchers in the U.S. Department of Education have estimated that the number …

The Academic Self-Esteem Of Higher Education’S Lgbtq+ Students, Tory Cline Apr 2024

The Academic Self-Esteem Of Higher Education’S Lgbtq+ Students, Tory Cline

Scholars Week

LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer) students' academic self-esteem is underresearched, particularly among college students. Academic self-esteem refers to students' self-esteem regarding their ability to perform well in school. Past research shows that academic performance and academic self-esteem are strongly correlated with one another (Smith et al., 1998). Among high school students, it was found that LGBTQ+ victimization was correlated with worse academic performance and that the presence of a GSA (gay-straight alliance) was predictive of lower levels of victimization (Kosciw et al., 2013). With the vast majority of research on this matter being conducted on high school students, …
