Transgender persons are also human beings though they identify themselves different from the gender binary.

This research has proposed to explore the existential struggles and faith of transgender persons in the modern society with reference to the application of three stages of life of Soren Kierkegaard to the …

RiSE study aims to evaluate a race-based stress-reduction intervention as an effective strategy to improve coping and decrease stress-related symptoms, inflammatory burden, and modify DNA methylation of stress response-related genes in older AA women. This article will describe genomic analytic methods to be utilized in this longitudinal, randomized clinical trial of older adult AA women in Chicago and NYC that examines the effect of the RiSE intervention on DNAm pre- and post-intervention, and its overall influence on inflammatory burden. Salivary DNAm will be measured at baseline and 6 months following the intervention, using the Oragene-DNA kit. Measures of perceived stress, …

Occupational Impact Of Caregivers In Pediatric Palliative Care, Lezlye Ramos, Karen Park, Jazminne O. Arteaga Apr 2024

Occupational Impact Of Caregivers In Pediatric Palliative Care, Lezlye Ramos, Karen Park, Jazminne O. Arteaga

Spring 2024 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

The purpose of this study is to understand the occupational impact for caregivers who had a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition who had received pediatric palliative care. A lack of understanding of occupational therapy’s role in end-of-life care ultimately underutilizes and under-prepares occupational therapists to work in this practice area. Becoming a medical family caregiver, neglecting personal needs and desires becomes a norm having a in-direct effect on physical and psychological health and well-being. Findings from this study suggest that it is reasonable to infer that occupational participation among caregivers is influenced by finding time for self and …

Framed within Hill-Collins' (2009) Black feminist thought, this study delves into the emergence of the impostor syndrome construct among Black graduate-level women in higher education. Despite the growing literature on impostor syndrome and its consequences across various demographics and sectors, inadequate scholarly attention has been dedicated to comprehending the specific challenges faced by Black women in education. Nine participants enrolled in Master's programs at predominantly White institutions were engaged in this exploration. Consistent with most of the existing literature, findings accentuated the pivotal role of educational attainment for Black women, who consistently outpace other groups. Comparison Of Constant Prompt Delay And Least-To-Most Prompting To Teach Receptive, Sarah Gindelberger Apr 2024

Comparison Of Constant Prompt Delay And Least-To-Most Prompting To Teach Receptive, Sarah Gindelberger

Theses

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is used in schools to teach students with autism spectrum disorder. Policies guide the selection and implementation of research-based practices to ensure positive student outcomes. Discrete trial teaching is often used as an instructional teaching method. To maximize learning, different prompting interventions can be used during discrete trial teaching. Constant prompt delay and least-to-most prompting are effective research-based interventions that can be implemented as instructional teaching procedures for students with autism spectrum disorder. Constant prompt delay was compared to least-to-most prompting to determine whether constant prompt delay would lead to more effective and efficient mastery acquisition …

The Lived Experience Of Career Sponsorship Of Canadian Female Executives, Dianna Dinevski Apr 2024

The Lived Experience Of Career Sponsorship Of Canadian Female Executives, Dianna Dinevski

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Women represent almost half of the Canadian labor population, but less than 6% of women advance to executive leadership. This is problematic because previous studies showed gender balance has been proven to be good for business, but with not enough women advancing in the leadership pipeline, business performance will continue to suffer. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of Canadian female executives regarding how career sponsorship may have influenced their career advancement to executive management. Role congruity theory provided the framework for the study. Eleven Canadian female executives participated in semistructured interviews to …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Parental substance use is associated with an increased risk for child maltreatment. The rise of parental substance use in Ohio led the state to implement Ohio START (sobriety, treatment, and reducing trauma), an evidence-based model that incorporates lived experience through peer recovery services embedded within child protection agencies. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the timeliness and quantity of Ohio START peer recovery services and the length of parental sobriety at case …

The Experiences Of Stress And Resilience On The Allostatic Load Of Transgender And Gender Non-Binary Individuals During Secondary School: How Their Experiences Can Inform Best Practices, Kimberly Skye Ferina Apr 2024

The Experiences Of Stress And Resilience On The Allostatic Load Of Transgender And Gender Non-Binary Individuals During Secondary School: How Their Experiences Can Inform Best Practices, Kimberly Skye Ferina

Theses & Dissertations

Transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender non-binary (TGNCNB) students face many challenges in secondary school that increase their allostatic load and can lead to allostatic overload. Various aspects of their identity cultivate stress, compounded by variables that impact them throughout the day. TGNCNB youth are at a greater risk of bullying and harassment than their cisgendered peers and are at a greater risk of employing harmful mitigating behaviors and suicidal ideation. TGNCNB youth spend most of their day in the school setting, and there is limited research on this population that identifies what schools can do to support this population better. …

Dengvaxia is the first dengue vaccine recommended in the United States (U.S.). It is recommended for children aged 9–16 y with laboratory-confirmed previous dengue infection and living in areas where dengue is endemic. We conducted focus groups with parents and in-depth interviews with key informants (i.e. practicing pediatricians, physicians from immunization clinics, university researchers, and school officials) in Puerto Rico (P.R.) to examine acceptability, barriers, and motivators to vaccinate with Dengvaxia. We also carried out informal meetings and semi-structured interviews to evaluate key messages and educational materials with pediatricians and parents. Barriers to vaccination included lack of information, distrust toward …
