Influence Of Maternal Abandonment, High-Crime Neighborhoods, And Experienced Abuse On Aggressive Assaultive Behavior, Michael David Austin Flood

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Assault crimes committed by men in the United States need to be studied empirically if a significant reduction in their occurrence is to take place. The purpose of this nonexperimental quantitative study was to examine the relationship between the reported experience of abuse, growing up in a high-crime neighborhood (HCN), and maternal abandonment with regards to individuals incarcerated for crimes that were operationally classified in this study as aggressive assaultive behavior (AAB). The framework that grounded this study was Bronfenbrenner’s ecology of human development and Beck’s perspective on framing, which guided the focus on how an individual frames an experience …

Aging And Depression: Identifying Strategies To Prevent Suicide And Restore Integrity, Nekka A. Herbert Apr 2024

Aging And Depression: Identifying Strategies To Prevent Suicide And Restore Integrity, Nekka A. Herbert

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Researchers have documented a projected increase in the older adult population and a foreseeable increase in older adult suicides associated with shortcomings in the mental health field related to providing adequate mental health treatment to individuals 65 and older. Researchers have concluded that these shortcomings are due to ageism, lack of awareness, lack of knowledge in gerontology, and inadequate training for professionals entering the field. Studies have highlighted the growing number of older adult suicides but have lacked effective treatment strategies to reduce depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts/behaviors, specifically in the older adult male population, which has the highest number …

Current Awareness And Tools Available For Stress-Induced Ibs In Children, Tripta Rughwani Apr 2024

Current Awareness And Tools Available For Stress-Induced Ibs In Children, Tripta Rughwani

Harrisburg University Dissertations and Theses

Introduction: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal (GI) disorder that affects 13-38% of children (4-17 years) worldwide. Early life stresses like trauma, family pressure, abuse, and parenting factors may alter the HPA axis leading to GI sensitivity. IBS symptoms can impact an individual’s quality of life, affect school attendance, and can be emotionally and financially stressful for the caregivers. To date, there is no known cure for IBS. While antidepressants have shown some efficacy in treating moderate to severe IBS in adults, prescribing a universal antidepressant drug, especially to the pediatric population is challenging due to the variability …

The Dark Triad, Creativity And Morality, Erin Beers Apr 2024

The Dark Triad, Creativity And Morality, Erin Beers

Honors Theses

The Dark Triad of personality is the combination of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. The associative theory of creativity involves the default mode network of the brain, which is responsible for memory tasks, imagination, and thoughts of self. Since the Dark Triad traits involve inhibitory control and imagination, there is a high likelihood that observed alterations in these processes may be used to predict dark creativity patterns. Malevolent creativity involves using new ideas to complete tasks that will harm others. With creativity not being limited to positive outcomes, aspects of morality are also part of the creative decision-making processes. Morality is …

Honors Theses

This study investigates trust in AI-generated language fluency. Participants engaged with both human and AI-generated content, varying in fluency. Findings were to favor trust in fluent human and AI interactions over disfluent ones. Understanding fluency's impact can inform AI design and encourage critical thinking when dealing with AI-generated content. By using qualitative analysis of think-aloud reports, we examined strategies that people use to assess texts labeled as human-generated and AI-generated content.

Mypov: Promoting Self-Efficacy And Empowerment Amongst Foster Youth, Hanah Friel Apr 2024

Mypov: Promoting Self-Efficacy And Empowerment Amongst Foster Youth, Hanah Friel

Senior Capstone Papers

Trauma is a key player in the lives of young people within the child welfare system. Adverse childhood experiences define the course of life for many foster youths prior to entering the system, and for many, exemplify their time during and after foster care. The results of this trauma are often overwhelming and far-reaching, as traumatic behaviors often take the form of distrust and dysregulation. Moreover, trauma can disrupt one’s sense of safety and contribute to feelings of disempowerment. For many, it is rare that our lives are representative of a complete lack of opportunity for self-efficacy and empowerment; however, …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a prevalent and profoundly debilitating complication that afflicts individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM). These ulcers are associated with substantial morbidity, recurrence rates, disability, and mortality, imposing substantial economic, psychological, and medical burdens. Timely detection and intervention can mitigate the morbidity and disparities linked to DFU. Nevertheless, current therapeutic approaches for DFU continue to grapple with multifaceted limitations. A growing body of evidence emphasizes the crucial role of cellular senescence in the pathogenesis of chronic wounds. Interventions that try to delay cellular senescence, eliminate senescent cells (SnCs), or suppress the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) have shown …

Structural Facilitation: Unraveling Social Worker's Covert Strategies For Overcoming Obstacles In The Memphis, Tn Housing System, Kelsey Ellen Hill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis explores the professional and personal identity of social workers in the context of restrictive policies and procedures within housing service institutions. Social workers play a crucial role in rehousing the unhoused, alongside providing knowledge, advocacy, and emotional support. However, they often face challenges such as being overworked, underpaid, and undervalued, leading to workforce attrition. In this study, social workers grapple with the dilemma of adhering to jurisdictional boundaries or bending the rules to achieve client success, which can create a conflict between personal beliefs and professional duties. The research investigates how personal experiences influence social workers' decisions to …

Death Of The Subject: Heidegger And Foucault On Subject And Subjectivity, Qiuyue Chen Apr 2024

Death Of The Subject: Heidegger And Foucault On Subject And Subjectivity, Qiuyue Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The discourse on subjectivity, a central theme in philosophy, has garnered attention from thinkers like Heidegger and Foucault. Heidegger critiques subjectivity through a lens of metaphysics and ontology, while Foucault examines it as a social construct. This thesis aims to analyze their critiques and find common ground. The first chapter delves into Heidegger's critique of Cartesian subject and subject-object dualism in Being and Time and Being and Truth, arguing it obstructs a comprehensive understanding of human existence. In the second chapter, Foucault's analysis of subjectification, notably in The History of Sexuality, illustrates how the process of subjectification shapes self-knowledge and …

The Lived Experiences Of African Immigrants Accessing Healthcare In The United States, Rachel Yendaogo Kamasse Apr 2024

The Lived Experiences Of African Immigrants Accessing Healthcare In The United States, Rachel Yendaogo Kamasse

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Ethnic and racial disparities in accessing primary healthcare persist for African immigrants in the United States, placing them at a greater risk for adverse health outcomes. This social problem has become more significant since African-born individuals are the fastest-growing immigrant population in America, and many of them experience health threats before their arrival in the United States. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore how African immigrants describe their lived experiences with accessing primary healthcare in the United States. The study was guided by ecological systems theory. Data were collected using in-depth, semistructured interviews lasting approximately 60-90 …

Type 2 Diabetes Health Beliefs Of College Students, Emily Spindler Apr 2024

Type 2 Diabetes Health Beliefs Of College Students, Emily Spindler

Honors College Theses

College students of health-related majors are sometimes assumed to have greater health literacy. The belief can be attributed to the students taking classes discussing health problems, diseases, risk factors, medical management, nutrition, and exercise. How often the health classes discuss type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains undetermined; therefore, the amount of knowledge and beliefs health students have of T2D is unknown. The objective of the study was to examine the relationship between students' majors, health beliefs about T2D, and engagement in behavioral risk factors at a mid-size regional public university. A quantitative, non-experimental, survey design was chosen, and responses were obtained …

Factors Supporting Academic Engagement Among Cambodian American High School Youth, Vichet Chhuon, Angela Dosalmas, Nida Rinthapol

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This exploratory study examined the relationship between Cambodian American

students’ (N = 77) attitudes and beliefs regarding school climate and school

engagement. We examined engagement through two primary constructs:

academic intrinsic motivation and future educational expectations. Four specific

correlates of engagement were examined to understand the quality of Cambodian

American students’ school engagement: sense of racial fairness; feelings of

teacher support; perceptions of self-competence; and perceptions of positive

classroom environment. Perceptions of self competence were positively

associated with higher educational expectations. Our regression models found

that students’ sense of positive classroom environment in addition to teacher

support was important …

The Ethical Motive As Counter To Benatar’S Anti-Natalism, Eliot Cox Apr 2024

The Ethical Motive As Counter To Benatar’S Anti-Natalism, Eliot Cox

Global Tides

In multiple works, David Benatar defends the view that it is immoral for parents to have children under any circumstance due to the suffering inherent in human life. This essay argues that Benatar’s anti-natalist argument is not successful because of its misidentification of the proper motive humans should have if they are to exist. Instead, I argue, the benefits of an ethical motive, if such a motive is properly instilled within a child by their parents or guardians, can surmount the suffering caused by existence. An ethical motive is characterized by the goal of alleviating suffering for others before oneself. …

Honesty In Marketing Communications: The Role Of Humor, Can Trinh Apr 2024

Honesty In Marketing Communications: The Role Of Humor, Can Trinh

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Amid the crisis of trust in the marketplace, there have been increasing calls for advertisers to show more honesty in marketing communications. However, firms are still hesitant to follow suit out of concerns that more honesty may mean more losses than gains. Against such background, there is still scant empirical evidence about the effect of honest marketing communications on marketing outcomes to help provide practical guidance for marketers. The present research helps fill this crucial gap by examining the role of humor in honest marketing communications. Three studies in this research reveal novel insights that an interrelationship exists between humor …

The Impact Of “Humorous” Ads Featuring Social Media Influencers On Perceptions Of The Influencer, Brand, And Purchase Intention, Jason L. Snyder, Robert Forbus Apr 2024

The Impact Of “Humorous” Ads Featuring Social Media Influencers On Perceptions Of The Influencer, Brand, And Purchase Intention, Jason L. Snyder, Robert Forbus

Atlantic Marketing Journal

The present study explored the use of humor in social media ads that featured both a product being advertised and a social media influencer (SMI). Using extant literature and the theory of planned behavior as guides, the goal of the study was to explore the role of perceived humorousness on consumer perceptions of the SMI, the ad, the brand, and consumer purchase intentions. The experiment (N = 292) exposed self-identified males living in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 40 to one of two versions of an ad for a men’s grooming product. The ads were run …

The Effect Of Consumer Socialization, Perceived Employee Identification, And Flexibility On Store Loyalty For Beauty Products, Harash Sachdev

Atlantic Marketing Journal

The survey data from a Chinese university suggests that consumer socialization and digital engagement profoundly influence employees' identification with their retailers. This identification, in turn, empowers retailers to become more flexible and adaptive to consumers' ever-changing needs, resulting in higher levels of store loyalty. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis revealed that retailers’ flexibility was vital in mediating employee identification and store loyalty.

Familiarity, Sensationalism, And Forward Referencing In Celebrity Clickbait: Effects On Curiosity And Click Intention, Cynthia B. Hanson Apr 2024

Familiarity, Sensationalism, And Forward Referencing In Celebrity Clickbait: Effects On Curiosity And Click Intention, Cynthia B. Hanson

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This study investigates the effects of celebrity familiarity, sensational copy, and forward referencing on curiosity and intention to click on a digital post using a 2 (familiar/unfamiliar celebrity) X 2 (high/low sensationalism) X 2 (high/low knowledge gap) experimental design. The results show that curiosity and click intention are significantly greater when the copy points to missing information and when familiarity is greater, supporting the information gap theory of curiosity and illustrating its application to the forward referencing technique used in clickbait. However, contrary to expectations, sensational copy produced lower levels of arousal, curiosity, and click intention, suggesting a backlash against …

How Politics Affects Practitioner Attitudes Of Marketing Faculty Interns, William T. Neese, W. Frank Thompson, Charla Brown Apr 2024

How Politics Affects Practitioner Attitudes Of Marketing Faculty Interns, William T. Neese, W. Frank Thompson, Charla Brown

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Marketing student internships are widely discussed in the literature, yet little has been published regarding the value of marketing faculty internships. In applied disciplines like marketing, faculty internships can bridge experience gaps between theory and practice and help provide critical information to keep the curriculum current. Unfortunately, politics can manifest itself as one barrier to academic engagement with the business community. To explore this potential problem, we first test a model that measures the influence political party combined with political ideology has on three Contempt-Anger-Disgust (CAD) outcome measures common in psychology literature. We model a statistically significant political backdrop that …

The Influence Of Job Embeddedness On Voluntary Salesforce Turnover, James Deconinck, Drew Carnes, Mary Beth Deconinck

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Turnover is a critical issue encountered by organizations. However, salesforce turnover is especially important for companies given the vital role played by salespeople. This study developed and tested a model of turnover among a sample of 331 business-to-business salespeople. The results indicate that perceived supervisor support, perceived organizational support, and supervisor satisfaction are important variables indirectly impacting salespersons’ search behavior and voluntary turnover through job embeddedness.

Person-Supervisor Fit Antecedents: Self Determination Theory In Salesforce Turnover Intention, Ilgim Benoit, Jeffrey R. Foreman, Bonnie S. Guy

Atlantic Marketing Journal

In this paper, by utilizing Self-Determination Theory (SDT), we discuss possible antecedents for Person-Supervisor (PS) fit, which is important in decreasing turnover intentions of salespeople. Specifically, this is the first paper to discuss autonomy, relatedness and competence as social antecedent variables that are influential in predicting the PS fit, which is the congruence of values and goals of salespeople and sales managers, that ultimately decreases turnover intentions of salespeople. Survey results show that autonomy and relatedness are both positively related to salespeople’s perception of PS fit, and have indirect effects on turnover intention through PS fit. Accordingly, by enhancing relatedness, …

Sibling Involvement: Highlighting The Influential Role Of Siblings In Supporting Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Gracie Krueger, Robyn Otty

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Social impairments experienced by children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can limit participation in meaningful occupations. Incorporating typically developing siblings of children with ASD in occupational therapy-based community settings is an emerging practice approach that aims to support children with ASD during social challenges to enhance their participation in daily activities. The inclusion of siblings in occupational therapy practice presents a unique opportunity to address social skill development while facilitating positive sibling relationships. In this Opinions in the Profession paper, the influential role siblings play as social models for their siblings with ASD will be examined. The purpose of …
