Hell On His Mind: Dean Winchester’S Journey To Hell And Back, Anna Caterino
Hell On His Mind: Dean Winchester’S Journey To Hell And Back, Anna Caterino
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Season three of Supernatural (2005-2020) closes with a shot of Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) in Hell. The place has no discernible features and resembles neither the long waiting line nor the gothic castle of later seasons. What is does resemble is a brain, with a labyrinth of ropes reminiscent of neurons, suggesting Hell is a place that exists first and foremost in Dean’s head. The lack of establishing shots and the abstract terms used to discuss Hell, damnation, and Dean’s experience present the viewer with a physical place into which all of Dean’s fears and trauma converge. This essay analyzes …

Substance Abuse: The Symbolic Geography Of Hell In The Great Divorce, Richard A. Bergen
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell is a Romantic vision of evil energy that reaches to the heavens, a geographical representation of capacity and scope and perpetual cosmic change. On the other hand, Lewis’s vision of hell in The Great Divorce is that of a land without substance: a conurbation of addiction to mental maladies, an endless mental substance abuse, an emptying of presence, and a banal stasis to the journey of the soul. Many of Lewis’s sources and inspirations for The Great Divorce, similarly, portray hell as a land of paradoxical “seeming-largeness”, while having ontological smallness. Throughout …
Tolkien, Augustinian Theodicy, And 'Lovecraftian' Evil, Perry Neil Harrison
Tolkien, Augustinian Theodicy, And 'Lovecraftian' Evil, Perry Neil Harrison
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
A number of scholars have commented upon Augustine of Hippo’s influence upon J.R.R. Tolkien’s portrayal of evil in his legendarium. However, in his seminal work J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Century, Tom Shippey pushes back against this perception, noting that there are some forms of evil in the legendarium that do not adhere to the Augustine’s belief that evil is merely a “twisting” of good. This article argues that Ungoliant is one such exception to the Augustinian paradigm because of the uncertainty regarding her origins. This uncertainty complicates the Augustinian view of evil that permeates the legendarium and instead echoes …

Forefoot Gait Retraining As An Intervention For Patellofemoral Pain: A Critically Appraised Topic, Tanner Bohan
Liberty University Research Week
Context: Running is a popular and accessible athletic activity, but many individuals are deterred by the pain and injury associated with it. Gait retraining, particularly transitioning to a forefoot strike (FFS), has gained popularity as an intervention for patellofemoral pain, a common running-related injury. This critically appraised topic aims to investigate the impact of running gait retraining to FFS patterns on the incidence and management of patellofemoral pain. Methods: A computerized search was conducted in October 2023, focusing on terms related to patellofemoral pain, gait, and forefoot. Inclusion criteria encompassed articles from the last 10 years, studies with human subjects, …

Effect Of Sleep Deprivation On Perceived Exertion In Endurance Athletes: A Critically Appraise Topic, Colton Mcguire
Liberty University Research Week
Context: Many studies have been conducted in order to determine the effects of sleep deprivations on athletes due its effects on performance. These studies focus on objective performance measures but have less commonly used a subjective measure of performance in the athletic population is used, called “perceived exertion.” Therefore, the purpose of this Critically Appraised Topic was formulated in order to find out the hypothetical question of “In endurance athletes, what is the effect of normal sleep compared to that of sleep deprivation when looking at perceived exertion?” Methods: Keywords and Boolean modifiers were used in sources such as PubMed, …
Improving Self-Efficacy In Flight Nurse Practitioners In Preparation For The Role Of The Law Enforcement Tactical Nurse Practitioner, Gregory Wamack
Improving Self-Efficacy In Flight Nurse Practitioners In Preparation For The Role Of The Law Enforcement Tactical Nurse Practitioner, Gregory Wamack
Liberty University Research Week
Current evidence demonstrates that the number of nurse practitioners working in the prehospital setting is growing. Additional training beyond formal nurse practitioner curriculums is necessary to increase the nurse practitioner's self-efficacy, knowledge, and skills for operational tactical conditions. Evidence also demonstrates that the Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3) course is the national tactical care and training standard. The purpose of this evidence-based pilot study was to increase the tactical self-efficacy of nontactical civilian flight nurse practitioners (FNPs). The clinical question was in the nontactical civilian flight nurse practitioner, does receiving education through the Tactical Combat Casualty Care course increase their …

The Problem With Interpreter Education Programs, Lauren Gebstadt
Liberty University Research Week
The field of interpreting is ever-growing, and with this, there are always problems that interpreter education programs can address. The following research is aimed towards interpreter education, commonly known as Interpreter Education Programs (IEPS). Due to mass amounts of research proving surface-level preparation in the context of coping mechanisms, this study is aimed to explore if extensive education in IEPs can decrease the presence of vicarious trauma in the field. This topic does not only apply in the contexts of mental health interpreting but can also apply to medical and legal settings. The following theoretical research utilizes an online questionnaire …

Parental Kidnapping And Domestic Violence: The Need To Reform And Enforce State Action, Anna Ratterman
Parental Kidnapping And Domestic Violence: The Need To Reform And Enforce State Action, Anna Ratterman
Georgia Criminal Law Review
When civil family issues intersect with criminal acts, the civil and criminal systems fail to effectuate a complete remedy. Specifically, there are few effective protections for victims of domestic violence during the pendency of domestic relations proceedings. Given the complicated gender dynamics and inequalities that have developed throughout history, it is unsurprising that the criminal and civil systems have failed to prioritize prosecution of crimes against women. Current criminal laws fail to treat domestic violence and parental kidnapping as serious crimes and instead adopt the view that domestic disputes are private issues to be handled within the family. In turn, …
Prevalence And Risk Factors Of Hikikomori In Young Adults In The Middle East, Harshil Paresh Shah
Prevalence And Risk Factors Of Hikikomori In Young Adults In The Middle East, Harshil Paresh Shah
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Hikikomori, a form of severe social withdrawal that can occur without the presence of any other psychological disorder, was once thought to be a Japanese culture-bound phenomena. However, studies have emerged from several parts of the world showing that this may be a global issue. Extant literature suggests associations between hikikomori and behavioral addictions such as gaming addiction and problematic social media use (PSMU). Since there is a relative paucity of research examining this phenomenon in the Middle Eastern context, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of hikikomori in young adults of the Middle East. It …

The Roycean Communal Ideal In T. S. Eliot's “The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock”, Micah Gill
The Roycean Communal Ideal In T. S. Eliot's “The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock”, Micah Gill
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
T. S. Eliot’s poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” has often been read as a thoroughly cynical assessment of the modern individual and community. This totalizing portrayal misses the poem’s ability to serve as a foil to a more ideal community. If Eliot is so ill-disposed to the timid, fragile Prufrock and his shallow, ostentatious social network, then Eliot must believe in the essence of a better community. We may look to one of Eliot’s intellectual mentors, Josiah Royce, for his philosophy of community, which stands as an ideal inverse in relation to the Prufrockian community. After examining …
Work-Life Balance In A Medical Unit Of U.S. Army Reservists: An Exploratory Study, Elizabeth A. Kleitz, Madelyn Huhn
Work-Life Balance In A Medical Unit Of U.S. Army Reservists: An Exploratory Study, Elizabeth A. Kleitz, Madelyn Huhn
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
Work-family life balance influences employee job satisfaction and quality of life. When work and family life are in balance, employees perform at higher levels and have fewer health problems. U.S. Army Reservists in both civilian and Reserve medical occupations may face work-life balance conflicts from both their full-time/ civilian and part-time/military medical occupations. Army Reservists in a medical unit were surveyed about their work-family life balance behaviors using the Work–Life Climate Scale in an exploratory cross-sectional study. Most reported rarely experiencing work-life conflict behaviors; however, many also reported that they worked late three to seven days of the week. Long …
Discrimination By Association: The Role Of Race And Exoneration In Hiring Decisions, Emma Bergquist
Discrimination By Association: The Role Of Race And Exoneration In Hiring Decisions, Emma Bergquist
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
People convicted of felonies are often discriminated against when applying for jobs after prison (Mikkelson & Schweitzer, 2019). Interestingly, exonerated individuals are also discriminated against upon their release, even though they were wrongfully convicted. To date, there has been no direct comparison of the discrimination between these two groups when they are applying for jobs. The present study closes this gap by comparing the application strength of candidates with varying categories of race, legal status, and community support. We collected data from 299 CloudResearch participants online and presented them with job application materials that they evaluated as if they were …

The Influence Of Specific Diagnosis And Trait Self-Relevance On Positive And Negative Perceptions Of Individuals With Mental Illness, Sabrina L. Stock, Aedan S. Levy
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
We investigated how participants perceived an individual with either depression, schizophrenia, or no disorder on negative and positive traits and then examined how these perceptions linked to desire for social distance (DSD), trait self-relevance, positive former contact with a person with mental health problems, and continuum beliefs. One hundred fifty undergraduates completed an online survey that described a vignette character with depression (VCWD), vignette character with schizophrenia (VCWS), or control character with no mental disorder (CC) and assessed participants’ perceptions of the character’s traits, DSD from the vignette character, perceptions of one’s own traits, and demographic characteristics. In general, the …

Comparing The Visuospatial Abilities Of Alzheimer’S Patients And Huntington’S Patients, Alysa Aralis, Emma Bauman
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
Visuospatial deficits emerge from the pathophysiology of both Huntington’s disease (HD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but few studies have directly compared the types of visuospatial deficits associated with these disorders. We directly compared the mental rotation abilities of HD (n = 18) and AD (n = 18) patients relative to age-matched control groups (young healthy controls: n = 20; older healthy controls: n = 20). Participants completed the nonrotational and rotational components of the Right-Left Orientation Test (RLOT), Luria, Money Road Map Test (MRMT), and Stick Construction Test (SCT). Participants also indicated the strategy they used to complete each: personal …

Punishment Versus Hope: Perceptions Of Social Media Portrayals Of Restorative Justice, Emily E. Leonard
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
Research focused on the intersection of social media messages and perceptions of restorative justice has the potential to provide insight on criminal justice reform. In light of national conversations about mass incarceration, restorative justice has become a topic of conversation on social media, particularly among activists. This research utilized qualitative interviews (n = 20) to ascertain Gen Z college students’ familiarity with, understanding of, and interpretation of messages about restorative justice as portrayed in social media posts that they have been exposed to during the course of their everyday lives. The study found that most participants learned about restorative justice …
Infiltrating The Boys’ Club: The Portrayal Of Women In Popular Crime Dramas, Emma D. Bergquist
Infiltrating The Boys’ Club: The Portrayal Of Women In Popular Crime Dramas, Emma D. Bergquist
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
The present study examines whether there has been a change in the portrayal of female criminal investigators over the past two decades. Cultivation theory suggests that media profoundly influences the views of the larger society, thus indicating significant implications of this portrayal. Five popular shows (Chicago P.D., Criminal Minds, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Hawaii Five-0, and Law & Order: SVU) were explored, with 200 episodes examined between the series using a mixed-methods approach. The main characters in each show’s first season and most recent season were coded and analyzed. Characters were coded for depth, authority, helplessness, and sexualization, among other …
Psychosocial Student Adaptations To Covid-19 In Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Covid-19 Through The Theoretical Framework Of Anomie, Grace Johnson
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
The COVID-19 pandemic affected individuals and social institutions because of an abrupt and expansive change to norms and values, which are key characteristics of an anomic state. The purpose of this exploratory and descriptive study was to understand how students enrolled at a residential university perceived educational and societal pressures associated with COVID-19. This research applied a mixed-methods approach and relied upon three phrases of research: (1) pilot questionnaire (n = 54), (2) qualitative interviews (n = 14), and (3) quantitative questionnaire (n = 253). Findings suggested similarities in how university students responded to COVID-19 and how communities had responded …

Can Time Really Heal: The Long-Term Impacts Of Joint Custody Arrangements, Savannah Mccullough
Can Time Really Heal: The Long-Term Impacts Of Joint Custody Arrangements, Savannah Mccullough
Liberty University Research Week
Due to a growing diversity of family structures, children grow up in a variety of living arrangements, especially if their parents are separated or divorced. The most common solution for these divorced families is joint custody or dual-residence arrangements, where children spend up to 50% of their time in each parent's household. The current literature on the effects of joint custody arrangements shows mixed results, for children's overall adjustment and well-being seem to depend more on moderating factors like the child's age, exposure to interparental conflict, and parent-child relationship quality. This thesis reviews the existing literature on the advantages and …
Worker Engagement In Faith-Based Nonprofit Organizations: The Roles Of Spirituality, Resilience, And Perceived Organizational Support For Engaging The Workforce, Beverly Webb
Liberty University Research Week
Nonprofit organizations rely heavily upon volunteerism and skilled employees willing to accept lower salaries to accomplish an organization's mission. Limited funding and surging needs in the nonprofit sector require a greater understanding of engaged workers to fully engage the workforce, where losses for nonengaged workers were estimated in the trillions globally. Research has supported the influence of spirituality, resilience, or perceived organizational support on worker engagement in for-profit and nonprofit organizations in varied settings. This study examined the relationships between spirituality, resilience, perceived organizational support, and worker engagement in Christian faith-based nonprofit organizations. Data was collected from two Christian faith-based …

A Qualitative Study Of College Students With Autism: Resilience And Spirituality, Benjamin Ellis
Liberty University Research Week
While research as been conducted on resilience and spirituality among parents of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, there is a distinct lack of research examining these variables within the context of the direct experiences of individuals diagnosed with autism. The present study seeks to examine whether individual resiliency and spirituality play a role in the lives of college students with autism, as well as whether these factors contribute to the development of spiritual coping mechanisms. College students with autism may demonstrate how to strengthen their resilience and spirituality, as well as whether spiritual coping mechanisms are common among college …
The Relationship Between Social Media Usage, Loneliness, And Mindfulness In College Students, Edward Cook
The Relationship Between Social Media Usage, Loneliness, And Mindfulness In College Students, Edward Cook
Liberty University Research Week
In recent years, both social media usage and loneliness have been increasing for young adults. While previous work has revealed a relationship between social media usage and loneliness among young adults, the purpose of the current study is to examine if mindfulness mediates this relationship and if different types of social media engagement moderate this relationship. We hypothesize that higher social media usage will be related to higher loneliness, which will be mediated by lower mindfulness, and that specific types of social media engagement will moderate the relationship between higher social media usage and higher loneliness. Participants will complete a …
