"Salir Adelante": Improving The Quality Of School Entrance Physicals For Immigrant Minors, Jennifer Sternberg, Elizabeth Morse
DNP Projects
The purpose of this QI project was to improve the delivery of school physicals in the setting of an -friendly non-profit safety-net clinic by creating a patient-centered clinical pathway to improve focused screening and referrals for newly arrived migrant children and their families by routinely assessing and addressing behavioral health care (BH) and social determinants of health needs (SDoH).
Using QI methodology and Donabedian’s Structure Process Outcomes framework, the project team implemented a clinical pathway that included an immigration-focused history of present illness, systematic behavioral health (BH), and social determinants of health (SDoH) screenings embedded within an electronic health record …
Hicks, Hillbillies, And Rednecks: Addressing Stereotypes Of The Appalachian Region, Emma Campbell
Hicks, Hillbillies, And Rednecks: Addressing Stereotypes Of The Appalachian Region, Emma Campbell
Senior Honors Theses
The Appalachian region of the U.S. has been widely stereotyped as a poverty-stricken place filled with “backwards” people and practices (Wood & Hendricks, 2009, p. 1). News and entertainment media in the United States have done little to improve or diminish these stereotypes as times have changed and have often perpetuated them. This thesis examines recent portrayals of Appalachia in media to identify shortcomings and misrepresentations and review methods for diminishing stereotypes that have been successful. From this review, elements of different approaches are evaluated and combined to develop a proposed social media campaign oriented toward changing public perception of …

Psychotherapy Outcomes Of Sexual Minority College Students: A Comparison Of Religiously-Affiliated And Non-Religiously Affiliated U.S. Universities, Elise Burton Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
This study compares U.S. university counseling center therapy outcomes of Sexual Minority (SM) students who attend religiously-affiliated compared to SM peers who attend non religiously-affiliated institutions. Using archival data from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH), we examined psychotherapy outcomes of 4257 SM student clients. We analyzed pre-treatment symptoms and post-treatment outcomes based on differences in Distress Index (DI) scores. We used the reliable change index (RCI) to separate outcomes into four groups based on the change in distress index level: no change, deteriorating, reliably improved, recovered from pre-treatment to post-treatment. Our participants (n = 4257) attended 34 religiously and …

Interactions Between Adolescent Alcohol Consumption, Corticosterone, And Later Stress Sensitivity, Ariana L. Velazquez
Interactions Between Adolescent Alcohol Consumption, Corticosterone, And Later Stress Sensitivity, Ariana L. Velazquez
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Adolescence is characterized by many socio-emotional and neurobiological changes that often coincide with increased amounts of stress and the onset of alcohol use. Stress has been known to modulate alcohol intake, although the literature regarding this directionality is mixed. Both alcohol and stress can have lasting impacts on HPA axis activation (alterations in stress reactivity) and neuroimmune function (microglial sensitization). It has yet to be evaluated how concurrent ethanol and stress (recapitulated through oral corticosterone (CORT) administration) modulates alcohol intake and impacts later stress sensitivity and microglial sensitization. It was hypothesized that chronic concurrent ethanol and CORT drinking would (1) …
Effects Of The Sudden Reduction Of Social Enrichment On A Novel Rat Model Of Approach Orientation, Emily Feldman
Effects Of The Sudden Reduction Of Social Enrichment On A Novel Rat Model Of Approach Orientation, Emily Feldman
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The goal of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a reduction in social enrichment by measuring behavioral changes in the Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) in male and female rats of High Approach (HAO) and Low Approach Orientation (LAO). The results indicated that at baseline, both total arm entries and open arm entries were affected by Approach Orientation and Sex. The percent change in closed arm entries in female LAO was sensitive to a sudden transition from high to standard social enrichment, whereas those in the female HAO and both male groups were behaviorally unaffected. The female LAO …
Factors That Influence African American Millennials’ Knowledge Of Risk Factors For Cardiovascular Disease, Ta'leitheia K. Boutin
Factors That Influence African American Millennials’ Knowledge Of Risk Factors For Cardiovascular Disease, Ta'leitheia K. Boutin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Findings have begun to identify that millennials have predispositions that significantly increase their risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This quantitative study, grounded in the socioecological model (SEM), addressed a gap of African American millennials' knowledge about CVD risk factors and the relationship of this knowledge to sociodemographic factors. Utilizing Survey Monkey, primary data was obtained through personal connections and social media such as Facebook, and participants were directed to a Heart Disease Knowledge Questionnaire (HDKQ). The requirement to participate was that they had to be African American, born between 1981 and 1996, and reside in Louisiana; the total number of …
Reproductive Justice In Mississippi: A Call For Reform And Acknowledgement, Andie Udziela
Reproductive Justice In Mississippi: A Call For Reform And Acknowledgement, Andie Udziela
Honors Theses
In this thesis, I apply the values of the Reproductive Justice Movement to reproductive healthcare resources in Mississippi to advocate for reproductive policy reform. I begin by navigating the historic racial discrimination in gynecology and how it manifested in Mississippi. Dr Sim’s abusive experimentation on Anarcha, Betsy, and Lucy depict how Anti-Black racism took root in gynecology and obstetrics and was later expanded on by the eugenic goals of white supremacy and the feminist movement through Margaret Sanger and the Mississippi Appendectomy. Then I discuss the current availability of reproductive care in Mississippi to low-income individuals to emphasize socioeconomic and …

"A Ghostly Roll Of Drums Remorselessly Beat The Measure Of Life": Mrs. Ramsay's Mediation Of Time And Memory In Virginia Woolf's To The Lighthouse, Kirsten Walker Burningham
Theses and Dissertations
Virginia Woolf declares she was "obsessed" with her mother's presence. Though Julia Stephen died when Woolf was only thirteen, Woolf spent years negotiating her mother's astonishing influence, culminating in her novel To the Lighthouse. How does one square Woolf's obsession with her Victorian mother considering Woolf's progressive and feminist ideologies? I argue that Mrs. Ramsay--and by extension Julia Stephen--mediated time for their children as a byproduct of their role as maternal caregivers. This mediation is presented as an atmospheric quality or ambience as well as an intervention between subjective experiences and objective measures of time. The measurement and psychology of …

Physiological Processes During Reading, Elizabeth Morrey, Emma Smith, Catherine Bohn-Gettler, Jennifer Schaefer
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
There are many different variables that can impact reading comprehension, such as reading level, emotional state, and the content of the text itself. For example, if a text contains inconsistencies (e.g., when a key moment in the text does not align with the information presented earlier in the story), processing slows as readers attempt to resolve the inconsistency. However, little is known about the connection between processing inconsistent versus consistent passages and physiological responses in the body. The goal of this study is to examine whether reading narrative texts containing inconsistent and/or consistent information elicits sympathetic nervous system activation, as …

The Role Of Psychological Readiness In Recovery From Acl Injury In Female Athletes, Samantha Meacock
Bone Bulletin
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury is common in sports, with female athletes facing a disproportionately higher risk in comparison to male athletes.1 This susceptibility is the result of a complex relationship between various factors including anatomical, biomechanical, hormonal, neuromuscular, and environmental influences.2 In addition, the unique challenges that females face with respect to sports, violence, body image, and family planning create additional stressors that may further contribute to an increased risk for injury.3,4 Following ACL Reconstruction (ACLR) surgery, these gender discrepancies carry over into recovery as female athletes exhibit decreased rates of return to sport (RTS) …

Worldviews Impacting Leadership Within U.S. National Security: Christianity Vs Secularism, Remy Goldsmith
Worldviews Impacting Leadership Within U.S. National Security: Christianity Vs Secularism, Remy Goldsmith
Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024
Worldviews influence and impact all aspects of life. This is because the way one chooses to see the world affects the decisions one chooses to make. Whether choosing a job, a religion, or a partner, all are affected by one’s worldview. This is also because worldview is where virtues derive from. The establishment of virtue is the cornerstone of building character and developing ethics. In other words, it forms the moral compass that an individual uses to base their decisions. As that stands, this means that worldviews and virtues are applicable and impactful toward leadership and decision-making within national security. …

China: A Settler Colonial Empire?, Kaleb Horne
Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024
China’s rapid expansion is a growing concern to many in the West, yet the history and pattern of its meteoric rise is deeply misunderstood. Surprisingly, its rise may be similar to that of many Western states. This paper will examine a constellation of China’s territorial and cultural expansions. Furthermore, it will examine ongoing and future expansions of the Chinese empire. It will examine Chinese actions in Tibet, the Yunnan Province, the Guizhou Province, Taiwan, the Belt and Road Initiative, and examine China’s ongoing treatment of Uyghur Muslims. These subjects will also be qualitatively compared to settler colonial theories, as described …
An Analysis Of The Abortion Fight's History, Facts, And Strategies In A Post-Roe V. Wade World, Jeremy Kang
An Analysis Of The Abortion Fight's History, Facts, And Strategies In A Post-Roe V. Wade World, Jeremy Kang
Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024
Despite the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision reversing Roe v. Wade - thereby giving states the freedom to regulate abortion as they saw fit - no significant decline in abortion numbers followed, raising the question: what is the right way to fight abortion?
One factor to be considered: how does the Constitution permit the different levels of government to tackle this topic? For half a century the Roe decision allowed the federal government to trump a state’s right to choose the level of abortion restrictions it deemed fit. Now the decision has been returned to the states. But which decision was …

One Hand Doesn’T Clap: The Moderation Of Individual And Contextual Factors On The Relationship Between Leader Narcissism And Followers’ Outcome, Wafa Mohammed Al Wahedi
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Drawing on leadership and social exchange theories, the purpose of this study is to examine the adverse impact of the toxic triangle; namely, Leader Narcissism (LN), Perceived unethical climate (PUC) and followers’ submissiveness (FS) on followers’ outcomes, particularly psychological capital (PsyCap) and constructive deviance (CD) through the mediation of leader-member exchange (LMX). The study introduces moral identity (MI) as a moderator. The conceptual framework was put to the test with data collected from both leaders and their followers in UAE-based organizations. Hierarchical linear model analysis was run on leaders and followers’ dyadic data for testing whether moral identity moderated the …

Break Their Lineage, Break Their Roots: Investigating The Chinese Government’S Relationship With The Uyghur Population To Determine The Potential For Terrorism And Genocide, Anya Veinberg
Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024
History is wrought with war, crime, and persecution. After nearly every conflict, world leaders vow to never let something similar happen again. Yet, history seems to repeat itself, and so do its conflicts. The Holocaust claimed the lives of millions of Jews and seemed to set a precedent of a modern threshold of evil. How many people would argue that an event strikingly similar to the Holocaust is happening right now in China?
The Chinese government is currently committing acts of violence and faith and race-based discrimination against the Uyghur population.
This work analyzes the interaction between the Chinese government …
Social Justice With Children's Literature, Victoria Bradford
Social Justice With Children's Literature, Victoria Bradford
Thinking Matters Symposium
An increase in refugee children arriving in the United States is driving innovation in elementary education strategies that focus on the role of children’s attitudes and behaviors concerning inclusivity to cultivate warm regard for refugees and immigrants. In 2017, anti-immigrant sentiments rose sharply alongside waves of nationalism reinforcing ethnic divisions across America, negatively impacting children of color who were frequently told, "go back to where you came from," even if they were born in the United States. Multicultural children's literature, in which commonalities between diverse characters are emphasized, is considered an effective way to expose children to other cultures, thereby …

Teaching And Practicing Goal Setting In A Course Onboarding Module, Jedediah E. Blanton, Rachel E. Williams
Educational Practices in Kinesiology
Teaching about the empirical evidence and basic tenets of setting and pursuing goals is a common topic in undergraduate kinesiology courses, especially in sport and exercise psychology. Yet, many textbooks and materials include goal setting as an applied skill or behavior change process buried in the middle of the term. In this article, we will define types of goals and share a goal setting activity that may be scaled for a variety of courses and class sizes. The purpose of this article is to share a proposal for opening the course by first covering the topic of goal setting. The …
Charismatic Leadership And Vulnerability: A Comprehensive Study Of Cult Dynamics, Danielle Santana Denrich
Charismatic Leadership And Vulnerability: A Comprehensive Study Of Cult Dynamics, Danielle Santana Denrich
Psychology Presentations
The term "cult" has various definitions in academic discourse, including religious or quasi-religious groups and small, ideologically aligned communities. This paper explores the complexity of the term, its alternative labels, and the influence of media portrayal on public perception. It examines cult leaders' attributes, focusing on the "dark triad" personality traits—narcissism, machiavellianism, and psychopathy—and their manifestation in charismatic leaders. The functionality of cults is scrutinized, highlighting their appeal as a familial structure and promises of intellectual, spiritual, and political power. However, the darker side of cult functionality involves manipulative recruitment tactics and thought-stopping techniques. Additionally, the paper examines susceptibility to …
