Establishment Support In Primary Elections: How Much Does It Matter?, Edward Haggerty Apr 2024

Establishment Support In Primary Elections: How Much Does It Matter?, Edward Haggerty

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This study examines the relationship between establishment support and electoral success in primary elections. Specifically, this relationship is examined through three case studies: the 2023 Virginia Republican legislative primaries, the 2016 Republican presidential primaries, and the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries. The findings indicate that voters employ establishment support as a heuristic when they feel they are independently uninformed on the race and its candidates, but tend not to employ this heuristic in cases where they feel they are sufficiently and independently informed.

Understanding The Challenges Of Perspective Transformation In Prison: Biographical Narratives Of Foreign National Students Of A Second Chance School In Greece, Antigoni K. Efstratoglou, George A. Koulaouzides Apr 2024

Understanding The Challenges Of Perspective Transformation In Prison: Biographical Narratives Of Foreign National Students Of A Second Chance School In Greece, Antigoni K. Efstratoglou, George A. Koulaouzides

Journal of Prison Education Research

Education has borne the burden of prisoners’ reform since the early days of modern prison. Several studies attest to its transformative potential, taking a short-term perspective. Rarely the experience of being a student, while incarcerated, is examined in the context of the wider biography. This paper uses perspective transformation theory as a point of departure to study how imprisonment influences adult learning. Building on biographical narratives of ten foreign national students of a Second Chance School at the largest Greek remand establishment, and participant observation of relevant class discussions, we argue that imprisonment impedes perspective transformation, strengthening structural inequalities and …

Proposal: How Does The Total Sugar Intake Impact Cognitive Function In Children 10 Years Of Age?, Andrew O. Laidlaw, Camila Arrieta, Shoshana Yachnes Apr 2024

Proposal: How Does The Total Sugar Intake Impact Cognitive Function In Children 10 Years Of Age?, Andrew O. Laidlaw, Camila Arrieta, Shoshana Yachnes

Department of Nutrition Student Projects

The effects that high sugar intake has on cognitive function is an ongoing topic in research today. Although most studies point to a negative relationship between the variables, the evidence is not conclusive enough to be able to confirm its true effect. While evidence finds an association between high sugar intake and chronic diseases, its impact on cognitive function is yet to be determined. The purpose of this proposed research study is to examine how total sugar intake impacts the cognitive function in children. Fifty children, age 10, will be randomly chosen from schools in South Florida for a cross-sectional …

The unmet emotional, physical, and spiritual needs further compound this situation. The researcher addressed the problem of unmet needs by training local pastors to serve as chaplains. Seven deputies, including six males and one female, and ten ministers, including eight males and two females, participated in the program. The training sessions included the following topics: introduction to law enforcement chaplaincy, personal issues LEOs’ battle, ministry of presence, building relationships, the chaplain’s purpose and role, qualities desired in a chaplain, ride-alongs, death …

Priming Through Persuasion: Towards Secure Password Behavior, Rizu Paudel, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen Apr 2024

Priming Through Persuasion: Towards Secure Password Behavior, Rizu Paudel, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen

Computer Science Student Research

Users tend to create weak passwords even for the important accounts. The prior research shed light on user’s insecure password behavior, and why the interventions, including requirement specification (e.g., password composition policies) and feedback systems (e.g., password meters) fail in practice. To this end, we propose and evaluate the concept: priming-through-persuasion in the realm of secure password creation. In particular, we created visual designs, aimed at priming users about the repercussions of weak passwords before their password creation. We base our designs on two forms of persuasion methods: pathos and logos. Pathos appeals to people’s emotion in order to persuade …

Autism And The Body Of Christ: Understanding, Accommodating, And Accepting Autistic Believers In The Church, Kaitlyn Cook

Senior Honors Theses

Autism is a neurotype that causes a different set of strengths and weaknesses and thus should be embraced and accommodated within the church. Not only are autistic believers able to grasp Christian concepts, but they also have different perspectives and skills that can be instrumental in building up the church. Promoting a correct view of autism and accommodating neurodiversity within the church will allow autistic believers to follow God’s command to be part of a body and build up the church. The church can employ several strategies to create an accessible environment for believers on the spectrum, including creating sensory-safe …

Supporting Admitted Students, Preventing Academic Jeopardy, Bridget M. Baehl

Masters Projects

The academic success of incoming students has been a growing concern for colleges and universities. The number of students ending up in academic jeopardy has been skyrocketing. While universities have support for academic success, the resources must be more utilized. These supports also tend to work in silos instead of functioning as a community support. This project explains the demographics of college students and the types of support that these students would best benefit from. To adequately support students who the universities are at the most significant risk of failing, colleges need to expand their support services. In response to …

With access to devices and online platforms at an increasingly younger age, it is essential to protect children from potential online risks. In our studies, we particularly focused the parents who have a child under 13 years of age. To this end, deriving from developmental psychology, we base our low-fidelity prototype design (termed as ‘treatment’) on a set of design principles focusing on open communication, instilling self-regulation, and availing granularity along with designs of existing Google’s parental control as a baseline. First, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 21 parents to understand their perceptions, including suggestions for design improvement within our …

Is Seeing Believing? How Television Advertisements Influence Investment Decisions, Lucas Selb Apr 2024

Is Seeing Believing? How Television Advertisements Influence Investment Decisions, Lucas Selb

Business and Economics Honors Papers

Stock returns are influenced by many factors. Finance scholars have attempted to examine the potential causes of stock price changes by comparing the observed returns of stocks after an event with the predicted returns they should have experienced had the event not occurred. The current “Super Bowl-Stock Returns” studies tend to find conflicting results regarding whether the returns of Super Bowl advertisers’ stocks deviate from their predicted values during the trading days following the Super Bowl, as well as the direction in which these returns deviate and why they deviate. This study uses a more precise model for estimating predicted …

Straight From The Source: Three Perspectives On Best Practices For Hiring People With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Elyse Whittemore

Honors Thesis

The purpose of this research is to identify best practices for the successful employment of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities by exploring their employment from several perspectives. Despite the prominence of DEI initiatives in today’s organizations and federal legislation prohibiting discrimination, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities still struggle to find employment. This is unfortunate as employment is vital for people's physical, mental, and financial well-being, and because employers may be overlooking valuable potential employees. Through a qualitative analysis of first-hand accounts of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their family members, and employers who proactively hire people with …

Educational Campaign: Using Exercise To Prevent Postpartum Depression, Ruth Platt Apr 2024

Educational Campaign: Using Exercise To Prevent Postpartum Depression, Ruth Platt

MSN Capstone Projects

Postpartum depression is one of the most common medical ailments surrounding childbirth. It affects up to 20% of postpartum women and has detrimental effects not only on the mother but her infant and family as well (Navas et al., 2021). Currently, the medical community takes a reactive approach to postpartum depression by screening and treating cases of postpartum depression as they occur. An evidence-based search of peer-reviewed articles found that exercise in the perinatal period had a positive effect on maternal mental health and decreased postpartum depression scores. This is especially true for women who have a history of depression …

Disruptive behavior with medical demands presents a significant challenge to accessing appropriate medical care, jeopardizing overall health and well-being, especially for autistic children and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Many times, doctors revert to invasive measures to perform medical exams such as chemical and physical restraints (Wong & Chien, 2005). The purpose of this study was to compare positive and negative reinforcement to increase medical compliance and reduce disruptive behavior. A multielement functional analysis was run prior to treatment sessions with the following conditions: control, tangible, escape and attention. A reversal embedded with an multielement design was used to …
