Marketing Of Bread, Leeloo Blunt May 2024

Marketing Of Bread, Leeloo Blunt

Senior Honors Projects

A content analysis of gluten-free bread packaging

The gluten-free food market has seen huge growth in the recent decade with the market valued at 12.3 billion US dollars in 2023. This market growth is due to the increased awareness of gluten related illnesses such as celiac disease and gluten intolerance, as well as the increasingly widespread belief that a gluten-free diet leads to weight loss and a healthier lifestyle. Out of the gluten-free market, bread products have been a major contributor to the growth of the market due to the demand for low-carb, gluten-free bread. The purpose of this project …

Comparative Analysis Of Victim Services Across The U.S., Avalena Giampa May 2024

Comparative Analysis Of Victim Services Across The U.S., Avalena Giampa

Senior Honors Projects

Crime is a major problem that impacts many people across the United States. The media and public commonly focus on the suspects and perpetrators, rather than the victims. This problem contributes to a lack of awareness of victim services. The database developed in this study serves as a resource for people to see what each individual state offers for victim services within their most populated county’s district attorney’s office. In forming this database, I looked at each state’s most populated county and reviewed their web pages for victim services offered by each DA’s office and applied a coding structure as …

The Power Of Self-Reflection, Lucy Kaczmarski May 2024

The Power Of Self-Reflection, Lucy Kaczmarski

Senior Honors Projects

Research suggests that self-reflection, which includes practices like journaling and personal narrative writing, can be a powerful tool for improving mental and emotional well-being. As a health studies major who will be pursuing a graduate degree in clinical mental health counseling, I wanted to learn about self-reflection and its impact on holistic well-being. Therefore, I developed a three-phase project to accomplish this. Phase 1 entailed a careful literature analysis of peer-reviewed research exploring the benefits of self-reflection. These studies discuss the importance of knowing and expressing oneself. Sources indicate that in writing about demanding times, individuals can find closure, and …

Funding Mechanisms For School Aged Children Who Qualify For Augmentative And Alternative Communication Devices, Hailey Johnson

Senior Honors Projects

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices are used by individuals of all developmental ages who have difficulties with speech. Those who qualify to use an AAC device are able to practice independence, communicate their needs, and are able to engage in more opportunities where conversation with spoken communication is necessary. This comprehensive review of AAC within the school-aged population provides a detailed look at their overall use within the public school setting, and the funding mechanisms available to users and their families for these expensive devices. Interviews with a Speech and Language Pathologist, and a parent of a child with …

How Many Parents Regret Having Children?, Payton M. Wooster May 2024

How Many Parents Regret Having Children?, Payton M. Wooster

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

The present study experimentally investigates the number of parents who truly regret having their children. By using an unmatched count technique developed by Gervais and Njale (2020), participants (N = 751) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: an experimental “yes/no” agreement condition, the “target statement present” counting condition, and the “target statement not present” counting condition. Participants were also asked different questions regarding marital status, whether they had a disorder diagnosis, had a history of their parents being divorced, and other suspected moderator variables. Regret of having children was reported significantly less compared to previous studies (Piotrowski et …

How Others Influence Our Identity: The Effects Of Closeness, Self-Verification, Need Fulfillment, And Self-Disclosure, Lucie G. Taylor

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Relationships and identity are fundamental aspects of the human experience. Thus, it is vital for us to understand how these two factors are connected. In the present study, I hope to further advance our understanding by identifying psychological mechanisms that occur between individuals and close others, which could be related to their identity. Two hundred participants were recruited using Prolific, a crowd-sourcing platform for research, and they were paid $2.00 each for participation. Through a self-report survey, participants were asked to measure their Sense of Identity (SOI) on an eight-item scale. Then, they were asked to think of someone who …

Functional Stereotyping Of Women’S Self-Objectification As A Function Of Life History And Body Fat, Vienne Howay May 2024

Functional Stereotyping Of Women’S Self-Objectification As A Function Of Life History And Body Fat, Vienne Howay

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Individuals prioritize different goals as a function of stability in their environment, oftentimes leading people to prioritize reproduction in hostile ecologies. From this shift in priorities, perceivers could develop heuristics about how women may attempt to attract mates. Previous research suggests that higher levels of body fat are more attractive to men with a fast life history. With this awareness of men’s preferences in body fat, high-fat women from hostile ecologies could be expected to engage in more self-objectifying behavior in the service of mate attraction or attempting present themselves as objects of affection to men. This study tasked participants …

Housing As A Determinant Of Health: Exploring The Role Of Housing And Homelessness Organizations In Increasing Access To Resources And Overcoming Barriers To Adequate And Healthy Homes, Jennifer C. Martin May 2024

Housing As A Determinant Of Health: Exploring The Role Of Housing And Homelessness Organizations In Increasing Access To Resources And Overcoming Barriers To Adequate And Healthy Homes, Jennifer C. Martin

Master's Theses

Across the United States, there are a multitude of barriers that stand in the way of obtaining adequate housing and additional resources that can assist with accessing housing. These barriers disproportionately impact low-income individuals and communities (Gold, 2016), and further contribute to inequity by negatively impacting the health of these individuals and communities (Swope & Hernández, 2019; Taylor, 2018). The current study explores housing organizations’ potential role in overcoming these barriers by focusing on the work of one housing organization in the Greater New Haven and Fairfield Counties of Connecticut: New Reach. 17 participants enrolled in New Reach programs were …

From Film Sets To Front Lines And Back Again: Reinventing Star Image In Post-World War Ii Hollywood, Livia Belen Lozoya

Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses

When World War II broke out in 1939, and as the United States entered the conflict after Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941, men and women all across America left their homes to serve the war effort, some of which included Hollywood stars. There were famous actors in the 1950s and 60s who served as unknown young men, but this thesis focuses on established movie stars who voluntarily left their lives of luxury to serve and returned to a changed postwar film industry, specifically James Stewart, Robert Montgomery, Marlene Dietrich, and Myrna Loy. By looking at each of these actors’ …

Animating Gender: Conflicting Narrative And Character Design In Gravity Falls, Laine Marshall May 2024

Animating Gender: Conflicting Narrative And Character Design In Gravity Falls, Laine Marshall

Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses

This thesis analyzes the character designs from the Disney XD animated series Gravity Falls (Alex Hirsch, 2012-2016) through a third-wave feminist lens, arguing that these designs reflect an essentialized perception of gender that is in conflict with the themes of acceptance present in the series’ narrative. The series’ narrative pushes forth the idea that female characters are the moral center of the series and serve as an example to their peers, that they are self-assured and in control, and that men can push past any ignorance to care for the people around them, but this effort is undermined by the …

Mindfulness And Prosocial Behavior: A Study Of The Light Triad Of Personality Traits, Jake Goedert May 2024

Mindfulness And Prosocial Behavior: A Study Of The Light Triad Of Personality Traits, Jake Goedert

University Honors Program Senior Projects

This study examined the relationship between mindfulness and a constellation of prosocial features known as the Light Triad. The past twenty years of psychological research has seen many studies confirming the benefits of mindfulness regarding the psychological health of individuals, but little research has been done to suggest the potential social benefits imparted by mindful qualities of awareness. In this study, 80 Northeastern Illinois psychology students were recruited through NEIU’s SONA platform and were presented with five separate questionnaires designed to assess prosociality (humanism, faith in humanity, and Kantianism), mindfulness, self-compassion, self-care competency, and felt purpose in life. This study’s …

Less Litigation, More Business Purpose: Leveraging Dispute Prevention To Preserve Business Relationships, Joan Stearns Johnsen

UF Law Faculty Publications

Strong interorganizational relationships play an essential role in business relationships. Soft skills associated with negotiation and communication are key to dealing with disagreements in these relationships. However, many companies do not invest in these aspects of their business relationships until conflicts arise. Dispute resolution provides helpful processes for managing these disputes, but companies can avoid conflict before it arises by investing in dispute prevention.

Dispute prevention represents a change in the existing paradigm, yet it poses numerous benefits. By implementing a dispute prevention mechanism, such as a Standing Neutral, companies can invest in strong interorganizational relationships and improve their ability …

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this review is to assess how adults who were obese as children are affected psychologically and physically. Understanding childhood obesity has become an important topic in the last few decades, especially in the United States. This research seeks to examine the previous literature and its gaps in making conclusions about how the diagnosis of childhood obesity affects children not only at the time of diagnosis but into adulthood as well. Articles for review sourced from PubMed and PsychInfo and were available via the University of Northern Colorado libraries. Numerous sources were found, and several had varying results. …

Implementing Practice With Children Affected By Trauma In The Field Of Speech-Language Pathology, Avery Liley May 2024

Implementing Practice With Children Affected By Trauma In The Field Of Speech-Language Pathology, Avery Liley

Undergraduate Honors Theses

There is currently a lack of research in the field of Speech-Language Pathology regarding the understanding and implementation of appropriate practice when working with children who have experienced a variety of forms of trauma, including maltreatment. Previous research has shown a significant correlation between trauma exposure and speech and language deficiencies, so children who fall in this group are often involved in speech-language pathology services. Therefore, it is essential that clinicians in this field obtain a better understanding of how to implement appropriate trauma-informed care. This research poses the question, “What is the relationship between childhood maltreatment and the development …

Determinism & Free Will: An Exploration On Gender Identity As Evidence For Compatibilism, Daniel Mangandi-Escobar May 2024

Determinism & Free Will: An Exploration On Gender Identity As Evidence For Compatibilism, Daniel Mangandi-Escobar

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Determinism is a philosophical concept asserting that every event and action in the universe has been determined by previous causes, which has caused considerable debate within philosophy. Two critical issues within this discussion are the implications of determinism for human agency and moral responsibility. In this work, I argue that free ill is possible, rejecting hard determinism. Specifically, I will be arguing in favor of compatibilism, which is the view that free will can exist even within a deterministic world. From this perspective, free will is not opposed to determinism. Instead, our choices and actions can still be considered free …

Barriers Faced By Members Of Marginalized Communities When It Comes To Eating Healthy And Cultural Adaptations To Nutrition Education Materials, Kennedy Larsen May 2024

Barriers Faced By Members Of Marginalized Communities When It Comes To Eating Healthy And Cultural Adaptations To Nutrition Education Materials, Kennedy Larsen

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Background: In the United States, major health disparities exist among low socioeconomic status (SES) and other marginalized communities. Many of these health disparities are nutrition-related and include diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Many individuals in this population lack education regarding nutrition, increasing risk of disease and the detrimental impacts that these diseases can have.

Objective: The aim of this project was to identify barriers that members of low SES and marginalized communities face and adapt nutrition education materials to be culturally appropriate for the immigrant and refugee population in the Northern Colorado area.

Methods: I conducted a needs assessment with …

The Divine Comedy: A Work Of Medieval Mythology, Jamie Alexander May 2024

The Divine Comedy: A Work Of Medieval Mythology, Jamie Alexander

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Prior to The Divine Comedy (1308-1321), ideas about Purgatory were in the early stages of development. Purgatory had loose rituals surrounding its existence and it lacked depiction in written works. Yet in the following centuries, the fear of Purgatory and the practices of penance and indulgences reached a fever pitch, ultimately leading to the Protestant Reformation. Purgatory as a celestial location, and not just the “purgatorial fires” of the Bible, only began to develop in the twelfth century, but its fearful description and imagery in The Divine Comedy not only solidified previously nebulous understandings of Purgatory, but also increased anxiety …

Little Lil's Big Adventure: How I Wrote A Children's Book On Adoption, Lilia Moritz May 2024

Little Lil's Big Adventure: How I Wrote A Children's Book On Adoption, Lilia Moritz

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Being adopted is a unique and complex experience; one of which can be expressed and learned about through children’s literature. The research behind writing a book on adoption includes adoption statistics, actions taken by adoptive parents, cognitive development of adoptees, windows and mirrors in books, adoption documentation from adoptive parents, authors and their relation to adoption, and how biological and adoptive parents are portrayed within the books. My methods included observing and looking at other children’s literature, creating my storyline, using pictures from my own story, and the publishing will be done after this project. Limitations involved include having a …

Are Research Studies Too Boring?: Incorporating Gamification Elements In Mental Rotation For Children., Samantha Zakrzewski May 2024

Are Research Studies Too Boring?: Incorporating Gamification Elements In Mental Rotation For Children., Samantha Zakrzewski

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Many cognitive tasks are perceived as boring by children due to their redundancy, lengthy trials, and required cognitive effort. Children’s performance on these tasks might therefore be hampered, not by a lack of cognitive ability, but rather by a lack of motivation to complete these tasks. Mental rotation, a type of cognitive task, has been extensively studied, due to its prevalence in daily living, in activities such as loading a dishwasher or packing a car, and its relation to STEM success. However, similar to other cognitive tasks, mental rotation tasks often result in fatigue and boredom in children. Hence, the …

The Development Of Children's Causal Language, Karima Elgamal May 2024

The Development Of Children's Causal Language, Karima Elgamal

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In order to talk about mechanical support (e.g., girl adheres a picture to a box), children must not only represent the relevant components (actor, action, figure, spatial relation, ground) but also map them onto linguistic structures (e.g., NP, VP, NP, PP). Although research has explored how children linguistically encode states of mechanical support (picture adhering to box), little research has explored how children encode mechanical support events - representations that involve knowledge of event causality as well as states (the picture adheres to a box because the girl used an adhesive mechanism). The current study tests whether children 3-to 5-years …

"Into The Womb Of Solipsism": The Spectrum Of Loneliness In Wallace's Infinite Jest, Michael Gieger May 2024

"Into The Womb Of Solipsism": The Spectrum Of Loneliness In Wallace's Infinite Jest, Michael Gieger

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Academic critics and casual readers of David Foster Wallace’s 1,079-page novel, Infinite Jest, have long ruminated over the book’s daunting physical size and wide narrative scope. This paper offers an argumentative interpretation of the novel’s immensity through an exploration of Wallace’s thematic preoccupation with solipsism and human loneliness. Building primarily from the critical works of Frank Cioffi and Casey Michael Henry, this essay makes the contention that the length of Infinite Jest behaves mimetically, simulating for its attentive readership a sense of perpetual emotional isolation—an isolation reflective of the epic’s untold lonesome characters. The argument further suggests that length of …

Lawrence As An Orientalist Figure Of Empire In David Lean's Lawrence Of Arabia, Leen Khashashina May 2024

Lawrence As An Orientalist Figure Of Empire In David Lean's Lawrence Of Arabia, Leen Khashashina

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In this thesis, I examine the character of Lawrence in David Lean’s 1962 film, Lawrence of Arabia. I seek to break apart the legend, examining his individual characteristics and interest in Arabia as well as his imperialist motivations, whether unconscious or not. Lawrence struggles to find his identity and this film is an exploration of that multitude. Many of the characters in the film have conflicting ideas about who Lawrence was because he did not even understand himself. The combination of Lawrence’s defiance of British orders and society as well as his obsession with becoming an Arab marks him as …

The Relationship Of Social Anxiety And Bullying With Positive Social Interactions Amongst Autistic And Non-Autistic Youth, Nicole Macapagal

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Background: Social relationships and social interactions are vital for developing children and youth as it is important for their development such as social skills and communications. Social supports create social and emotional support for individuals and provide resilience against mental health issues and other difficult situations. Interpersonal relationships help more positive outcomes during childhood and adolescence and into adulthood. Social anxiety is a mental health condition in which individuals fear what others think of them and can prevent interpersonal relationships from happening or having positive experiences. Youth who experience social anxiety are more likely to have poor quality interpersonal relationships …

A Qualitative And Quantitative Review Of The Terms "Job" And "Organization" From The Employee's Perspective, Nirvana Mejia

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This study explores how employees perceive workplace constructs like job satisfaction and differentiate them between their job and organization. It highlights the importance of avoiding mistaken associations, known as the "jingle fallacy," which can oversimplify workplace dynamics. The research includes two studies, one qualitative with 12 participants discussing their job and organization, and one quantitative with 197 to 252 participants assessing job satisfaction dimensions. Findings indicate that people generally mention tasks when discussing their job and broader organizational aspects when discussing their organization. The majority of job satisfaction dimensions fall into a mixed category, with Regular Tasks being the only …

Symptoms And Displacements: Satan's Detachments In Paradise Lost, Rosemary Rodriguez May 2024

Symptoms And Displacements: Satan's Detachments In Paradise Lost, Rosemary Rodriguez

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

For my thesis I aim to examine the detachment that Satan has to his surroundings in John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. Predominantly using psychoanalysis and Marxist theory as my main lenses for analysis, I intend to show the full extent of Satan's punishment and condemnation in the text. A standard close reading of this work shows how flawed and inconsistent Satan is in his disposition and beliefs. From boasting about being able to make a heaven of hell to considering asking God for forgiveness, the text shows him constantly changing. In other words, Satan's mental instability manifests itself in …

Decisions, Decisions: The Influence Of Anxiety On Decision Making, Allisun Romain May 2024

Decisions, Decisions: The Influence Of Anxiety On Decision Making, Allisun Romain

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The purpose of the present study was to better understand the influence of state anxiety on decision making, including how constructs such as trait anxiety and emotional intelligence may moderate this relationship. Participants were randomly assigned to a state anxiety-inducing condition or a control condition. They were then prompted to complete a computerized dynamic decision-making task in which optimal performance requires exploring a novel decision environment and learning reward contingencies of the task. Prior to the experimental manipulation, participants also completed self-report measures of trait anxiety and emotional intelligence. Independent sample t tests were employed to measure differences between the …

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation And The Rtpj (Right Teaching Parietal Junction), Molly Skowron May 2024

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation And The Rtpj (Right Teaching Parietal Junction), Molly Skowron

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Theory of Mind (ToM) is conceptualized as the ability to infer the thoughts and feelings of others. Many studies have found that ToM abilities play a central role in collaborative communication between adults, and that teachers are more effective when they have high levels of ToM. One of the main brain regions implicated in ToM is the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ), which is thought to be responsible for evaluating a person’s belief formation process. The current study had participants engage in a Lego model building task consisting of a director who instructed a builder on how to create duplicate models …

The Role Of Executive Functioning On Anxiety And Overcontrol On Neurodiverse Youth, Sydney Przygoda May 2024

The Role Of Executive Functioning On Anxiety And Overcontrol On Neurodiverse Youth, Sydney Przygoda

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Autistic youth are at an elevated risk of developing anxiety. Overcontrol, or excessive self-control, shares similar clinical challenges (i.e. rigidity, social perfection) that are often associated with anxiety. Executive functioning (EF) is well-established as being positively associated with anxiety. Taking all this into account, it was predicted that EF may serve as a moderator to the relationship between overcontrol and anxiety. Using both parent and child responses to the Overcontrol in Youth Checklist, Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children and Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-2, this current study explored how overcontrol and anxiety are related. Further, it tested the role …
