A Consideration Of Racial/Ethnic Diversity Conceptualization And Measurement: Clarifying Ambiguities And Advancing Scholarship, Mei-Ki Chan, Aprile D. Benner
Psychology Faculty Publications
There has been little discussion of racial/ethnic diversity conceptualization and measurement in educational and psychological research. With the surge of research on school diversity and its significant social meaning, the lack of clarity on how diversity is conceptualized and operationalized warrants a systematic review. This article 1) reviews diversity concepts in the literature, 2) describes potential conceptual and methodological concerns, 3) proposes an alternative method to measure two specific types of diversity, and 4) highlights considerations for future research and methodology when studying diversity. More specifically, we conducted a systematic review to summarize the available measures that quantify diversity, mapped …
Black Parent Engagement Through The Lens Of Critical Consciousness, Marie Flore Stamps
Black Parent Engagement Through The Lens Of Critical Consciousness, Marie Flore Stamps
Theses & Dissertations
System justification, by which all members of the system believe the tenets of the system, affects how the intelligence and behavior of Black children are perceived as well as their outcomes. Moreover, as members of the system, Black parents who absorb and believe the negative deficit constructs may be prevented from effectively advocating for their children. This study strove to explore Black parents’ critical consciousness through a workshop on Black parents' perceptions of racism in the educational system and their ability to resist it. The workshop was devised using Freire’s critical consciousness framework to provide critical awareness with a potential …

Pet ownership and interactions with animals confer various physiological and psychological benefits to humans. Although interactions with animals are commonplace, there is no consensus in the literature on the actual impact of animal exposure on prosociality. Hence, this meta-analysis investigated 20 eligible studies (n = 4,116, k = 48) and provided an extensive examination into the different potential moderators of the relationship between human–animal interaction (HAI) and prosociality, such as the distinction between empathy and prosocial behavior, HAI characteristics, and sample characteristics. Overall, a small positive effect size was found (d = 0.22), suggesting that human exposure to animals is …

The oral health outcome measure was …
Empirical Essays On Retail Investors, Institutional Investors, And Anomalies, Yuqing Yang
Empirical Essays On Retail Investors, Institutional Investors, And Anomalies, Yuqing Yang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation consists of five chapters on market efficiencies through retail and international mutual fund investors.
Chapter 1 This chapter briefly introduces this dissertation.
Chapter 2 This chapter Anomalies Never Disappeared: The Case of Stubborn Retail Investors delves into the “stubborn” retail investors and finds that anomalies traded against by retail investors never disappear in the long run, defying the conventional wisdom that anomalies are disappearing in recent years as market efficiency improves. Incorporating retail trading, I develop asset pricing models that surpass existing prominent models in explaining these long-run alphas. I hypothesize that retail investors exacerbate anomalies: the more …

The Impact Of Outdoor Thermal Comfort On Users’ Walkability: Study Case In Al Ain Square, Al Ain City, Uae, Alyazia Saeed Alnehayan
Theses
Living in a hot dry arid climate limits the walkability of its inhabitants. The excessive heat and dryness of the weather undoubtedly make walking a less tempting, encouraging, and pleasant choice for getting around the city. For that reason, this master thesis analyzes the various strategies used to enhance outdoor thermal comfort. Outdoor thermal comfort is controlled by numerous factors, including street and building orientation, vegetation, shading devices, and water bodies. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between walkability and UTCI values (universal thermal comfort index) in the context of Al Ain Square, a neighborhood in …

Salivary Microbiome Signature In Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Ghaidaa Mohammed Mesto
Theses
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a complex disorder characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). IBD mainly includes two distinct diseases, namely Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). To date, the precise etiology of these conditions is not fully elucidated, although a strong relationship between microbial dysbiosis in the GIT and IBD has been proposed. In general, limited data is available on the oral microbiome of IBD patients, despite its recognizable role in impacting gut health. There is a paucity of research on IBD in the pediatric population, although this disease is becoming more prevalent than in …

The Association Between Body Image Satisfaction And Depressive Symptoms Among Young Women In The Uae With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Pcos) And Non-Pcos: A Comparative Quantitative Cross-Sectional Study, Shaima Abdrahman Al-Mekhlafi
Theses
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common syndromes affecting women of reproductive age, (Laggari et al., 2009). PCOS not only impacts women's physical health but also their psychological well-being, often leading to depressive symptoms and lower body image satisfaction, Wang et al. (2023). Recent research indicates a growing prevalence of PCOS among women in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Mirza et al. (2023). However, there is a noticeable gap in understanding the psychological effects of PCOS on women in the UAE, likely due to cultural sensitivities. This study aims to investigate the association of depressive symptoms and …

In Australia, there is insufficient exploration and understanding of how we can strengthen the critical role played by Indigenous fathers. This paper argues that for Indigenous fathers to feel supported in childrearing, greater attention must be given to their social and cultural determinants of health and well-being. To gain insights into the challenges experienced by Indigenous fathers and the support they require in fatherhood, we primarily apply thematic analysis to data from the Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC). The findings reveal that most fathers identify a social or cultural health and well-being determinant challenging their fatherhood journey. We examine …
Data Privacy By Contract, Ifeoma Ajunwa, Austin Kamer
Data Privacy By Contract, Ifeoma Ajunwa, Austin Kamer
Cardozo Law Review
Protecting consumer privacy rights presents a particular challenge given the prevalence of data breaches. This Article notes that current law is woefully inadequate in protecting the privacy rights of consumers. Notably, the law fails in the following four areas: (1) classification of consumer data, (2) lack of a comprehensive approach, (3) after-the-fact focus, and (4) limited accountability for third parties. Although it may be impossible to eliminate all data breaches, more regulations can bolster protection without restricting technological advancements. This Article proposes a contractual approach to privacy protection for consumers. It argues that the creation of mandatory implied contractual terms …

Caring With Relational Justice In Irish Social Care, Niall Hanlon
Caring With Relational Justice In Irish Social Care, Niall Hanlon
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
Social justice and care are deeply intertwined; caring requires justice, and justice requires care. While social justice is recognized as central to the new profession of Social Care Work [SCW] in Ireland, critical thinking about care and justice has been, at best, marginal in practice. In response to this, relational pedagogy is a new approach to social care education [SCE] that emphasizes the link between social justice and care (Hanlon, 2022b). The focus on relational justice in pedagogical practice aims to nurture students’ capabilities in engaging in four interrelated sets of practices: critical, caring, emancipatory, and creative practices (Hanlon, 2024). …

Confronting Algorithms: Conscience Catching In The Criminal Trial And Beyond, Sherman J. Clark
Confronting Algorithms: Conscience Catching In The Criminal Trial And Beyond, Sherman J. Clark
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Using the question of how to treat algorithmic evidence under the Confrontation Clause as an entry point, I argue that the use of AI in ethically salient situations presents a risk. It may cause us to avoid confronting our own responsibility. This matters because facing up to what we do, including what we delegate, can help us grow and thrive. Bearing responsibility can help us nurture vital capacities, including forms of empathy, honesty, and dignity. In the language of ethics, these are eudaimonist virtues—traits and capacities that can help us live well and fully. We should thus find ways of …
When The Entrepreneurial Subject Fails: The Neoliberal Governance Of Consumer Debtors, Michael D. Sousa
When The Entrepreneurial Subject Fails: The Neoliberal Governance Of Consumer Debtors, Michael D. Sousa
Denver Law Review
Neoliberalism ushered in a debt-based economy for American society. The existing scholarship linking neoliberalism to personal indebtedness has mainly been at the macrolevel of analysis. There remains a need to investigate how neoliberalism operates at the microlevel and impacts the everyday lived experiences of consumers struggling with debt. Michel Foucault’s concept of governmentality offers a useful analytical framework for unearthing the technologies that result in the subjectification of consumer debtors. A governmentality framework enables us to better understand how indebtedness presents both material and psychological harms for individuals and how neoliberal discourses are interiorized and facilitate a resurrection of financial …
An Investigation On The Effects Of Fund Manager’S Narcissism On Fund Performance, Ning Zhou
An Investigation On The Effects Of Fund Manager’S Narcissism On Fund Performance, Ning Zhou
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
As the capital market continues to expand, the benefits of securities investment funds have become increasingly prominent. However, for investors, selecting the right investment fund from numerous options can be more challenging than directly choosing stocks. The process of seeking investment opportunities also involves selecting the right fund manager, a step often underestimated by investors. Research in behavioral finance indicates that fund managers tend to exhibit irrational decision behavior under immense pressure and uncertain investment outcomes. Narcissism as a psychological trait may influence fund managers’ decision-making behavior. This study, through questionnaires and empirical analysis, examines the narcissistic traits of Chinese …

A major challenge faced by university economics instructors is to find more time to incorporate active learning into the classroom, which encourages student participation. As a result, more instructors choose to flip their classrooms, in which students are encouraged to perform preparatory reading or watch videos to participate more meaningfully and learn more effectively. This study aims to examine how pre-lecture materials enhance student participation by examining the effectiveness of two types of materials: interactive videos and synthesized readings. The synthesized readings contain essential information extracted from the textbook and is presented in a structured manner with highlighted key points. …
Criticality Aware Canvas-Based Visual Perception At The Edge, Ila Gokarn
Criticality Aware Canvas-Based Visual Perception At The Edge, Ila Gokarn
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Efficient and effective machine perception remains a formidable challenge in sustaining high fidelity and high throughput of perception tasks on affordable edge devices. This is especially due to the continuing increase in resolution of sensor streams (e.g., video input streams generated by 4K/8K cameras and neuromorphic event cameras that produce ≥ 10 MEvents/second) and computational complexity of Deep Neural Network (DNN) models, which overwhelms edge platforms, adversely impacting machine perception efficiency. Given the insufficiency of the available computation resources, a question then arises on whether selected regions/components of the perception task can be prioritized (and executed preferentially) to achieve highest …
Fitting The Communication Forum To The Mediation Fuss: Choosing The Appropriate Communication Mode For Mediation In The Post-Pandemic World, Dorcas Quek Anderson
Fitting The Communication Forum To The Mediation Fuss: Choosing The Appropriate Communication Mode For Mediation In The Post-Pandemic World, Dorcas Quek Anderson
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, mediations have shifted dramatically from face-to-face settings to the virtual realm, resulting in the widespread acceptance of using virtual communication channels, including videoconferencing, audio calls, and text messaging. With the waning of the pandemic, mediators and parties presently face a plethora of choices in fitting their mediation to the appropriate communication channel. Thus, having an accurate, evidence-based understanding of different communication modes’ impact on mediation is necessary to design an optimal mediation process. Some decades ago, Sander and Goldberg formulated the phrase “fitting the forum to the fuss” to describe the process of choosing the most appropriate …

The Impact Of Soft Skills Training On Guest Satisfaction In The Hospitality Industry, Lawrie Colaco Mr
Masters Projects
The hospitality industry has become immensely fast-paced, and prioritizing guest satisfaction levels has been one of the main objectives. While hard skills such as technical expertise and operational proficiency are important aspects which are required by the hospitality staff, soft skills also play a pretty significant role. Soft skills enable the staff to be adaptive and communicative, it raises their empathy levels and teaches them to control their emotions and perform under stressful working environments. The importance of soft skills in this sector cannot be overemphasized, not only does this help with harbouring a positive attitude among the employees but …

Pharmacogenetic testing could reduce the time to identify a safe and effective medication for depression; however, it is underutilized in practice. Major depression constitutes the most common mental disorder in the US, and while antidepressant therapy can help, the current trial -and error approach can require patients to endure multiple medication trials before finding one that is effective. Tailoring the fit of pharmacogenetic testing with prescribers' needs across a variety of settings could help to establish a generalizable value proposition to improve likelihood of adoption. We conducted a study to explore the value proposition for health systems using pharmacogenetic testing …

Prescribed opioids are a mainstay pain treatment after traumatic injury, but a subgroup of patients may be at risk for continued opioid use. We evaluated the predictive utility of a traditional screening tool, the Opioid Risk Tool (ORT), and two other measures: average in-hospital milligram morphine equivalents (MME) per day and an assessment of opioid demand in predicting pain outcomes. Assessments of pain-related outcomes (pain intensity, interference, injury-related stress, and need for additional pain treatment) were administered at 2 weeks and 12 months post-discharge in a sample of 34 patients hospitalized for traumatic injury. Bayesian linear models were used to …
Moving Beyond Human Capital: Constructivism, Critical Pedagogy, And Interdisciplinary Collaboration In A Building And Construction Pathway, Ryan James Lundell
Moving Beyond Human Capital: Constructivism, Critical Pedagogy, And Interdisciplinary Collaboration In A Building And Construction Pathway, Ryan James Lundell
Social Justice in Educational Leadership EdD Dissertations
The silo structure and neoliberal rationality of Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways limit student learning and propagate the purpose of education as the creation of human capital, not a socially aware citizenry (Brown, 2017; Jacobs, 2010). Despite its history of racial tracking, CTE pathways still neglect critical thinking/dialogue around social/environmental justice issues, drastically hurting workers’ ability to confront these inequities (Darder, 2017; Oakes & Saunders, 2011; Shor & Freire, 1987). Using a qualitative research design that employs ethnographic elements, this study found that constructivism, critical pedagogy, and interdisciplinary collaboration can positively impact the experience, participation, and critical consciousness of students …
