Code-Switching In The Second Language Classroom: A Narrative Study Of A Saudi English Language Teacher’S Experience, Amal Alnefaie, Abha Gupta
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
This narrative study explores the use of code-switching in the second-language classroom from the perspective of a Saudi English language instructor. The aim was to explore how the instructor experienced code-switching as a student and used it in her teaching. The main research question guiding the study was: How does a Saudi English language teacher perceive and utilize code-switching in her teaching practice, and how does this relate to her experiences as a language learner? The study holds significance in contributing to the ongoing discourse on code-switching in second-language classrooms, providing a nuanced understanding from the perspective of an individual …
Jugaatronics, Monica Bhyrappa
Jugaatronics, Monica Bhyrappa
Masters Theses
Jugaatronics is a body of work that aims to address the current e-waste issues by designing consumer electronics that are repurposable, creating new electronics and objects. This project is born from the cultural practice of 'Jugaad' - the practice of repurposing everyday objects to extend their usability, a form of frugal innovation deeply embedded in my upbringing in India.
Most electronic devices are often discarded at the first sign of malfunction—deemed unnecessary. My thesis highlights this throwaway culture by integrating the concept of Jugaad(repurpose) into the lifecycle of electronic products, demonstrated as a hairdryer.
By showcasing potential repurposing opportunities at …

Consumer Engagement In Fashion Circularity In China: Exploring Consumer Online Fashion Resale Through The Lens Of Social Practice Theory, Sujun Liu, Chuanlan Liu, Chunmin Lang
Faculty Publications
Fashion resale has emerged as a notable strategy for the fashion industry to reduce its environmental footprint by promoting fashion circularity. Despite extensive research on consumer awareness of resale and the purchase of pre-owned items, there remains a gap in understanding the factors that influence consumers’ participation in resale markets, encompassing both selling and buying practices. Drawing on social practice theory (SPT), this qualitative study examines the nuanced factors influencing consumers’ online resale practices and investigates how online fashion resale practices (OFRPs) have become integrated into their daily consumption patterns. In-depth interviews were conducted with thirty experienced Chinese consumers engaged …

Dimensions Of Parenting And Children’S Conduct Problems: The Importance Of Considering Children’S Callous–Unemotional Traits, Carolina Facci, Andrea Baroncelli, Paul J. Frick, Enrica Ciucci
Faculty Publications
Research has clearly indicated that the development of serious behavioral problems in children and adolescents is influenced by parenting. However, recent research has refined the role of parenting by showing the importance of distinguishing between different types of parenting and in considering the role of callous–unemotional traits (CU traits) and conduct problems (CP) of the children. In the current study, we advance this research by distinguishing between emotional (e.g., parental warmth; parental hostility) and behavioral (e.g., use of positive reinforcement; inconsistent discipline/harsh discipline) aspects of parenting and by considering the way parents respond to children’s emotions (i.e., coaching and dismissing). …

Institute for Human Development, East Africa
Background Sexual behavior (SB) is a well-documented pathway to HIV acquisition in emerging adults and remains common amongst African emerging adults. Previous research in high-income countries indicates a correlation between disordered eating behavior (DEB) and engaging in sexual behaviors. We aimed to describe the relationship between DEB and SB amongst emerging adults attending a tertiary educational institution at the Kenyan Coast.
Methods We applied a cross-sectional design nested in a young adults’ cohort study. Eligibility included sexually active emerging adults aged 18–24 years. Three DEBs (emotional, restrained and external eating) were assessed using the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire and analysed …

Reconceiving Corporate Rights And Regulation In The Ai Era, Michael R. Siebecker
Reconceiving Corporate Rights And Regulation In The Ai Era, Michael R. Siebecker
Missouri Law Review
Can existing corporate governance principles properly guide the relationship between shareholders and directors as artificial intelligence (“AI”) plays an increasingly prominent role in corporate management, planning, and operations? Without a doubt, AI technologies allow corporations to enjoy enhanced efficiency and innovation. But the vast range of AI capabilities—from sophisticated data analytics to autonomous decision-making—raises profound questions about whether traditional governance principles remain sufficiently robust to cabin the proper development and deployment of such a powerful and rapidly evolving set of new technologies. Current corporate governance structures that focus on human actors and traditional business decision-making mechanisms seem ill-suited to address …

PURPOSE: Repeated transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is expected to have the potential to improve cognitive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of at-home tDCS for elderly patients with MCI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients aged 60-80 years, who maintained normal daily living but reported objective memory impairments, were enrolled. Active or sham stimulations were applied to the dorsal frontal cortex (left: anode; right: cathode) at home for 2 weeks. Changes in cognitive function were assessed using visual recognition tasks and the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), and safety and efficacy were …
Comprehensive Examination Of The Effect Of A Randomized Controlled Brief Mindfulness-Based Intervention On Autonomic Nervous System Functioning, Li Shen Chong
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Brief mindfulness-based interventions are comparable to traditional mindfulness-based interventions in alleviating stress and improving well-being. To explore the underlying biological mechanisms of these practices, researchers have been exploring the effects of mindfulness-based interventions through the autonomic nervous system (ANS), a major bodily stress response system. Nevertheless, most of these studies relied on one stress response system or a specific biomarker. This study aims to comprehensively examine the effectiveness of two sessions of brief mindfulness-based interventions on ANS functioning. Participants were assigned to the brief mindfulness intervention condition (n = 44) or control condition (n = 47). Participants’ physiological data, including …
From Lightbulbs To #Sheinhauls: Considerations For Planned Obsolescence Regulation In The Modern Era, Nicole Cullen
From Lightbulbs To #Sheinhauls: Considerations For Planned Obsolescence Regulation In The Modern Era, Nicole Cullen
Washington Law Review
“Planned obsolescence,” broadly defined as conduct by manufacturers to shorten product lifespans and spur consumption, is characteristic of the American economy. Such conduct largely manifests in widely accepted competitive strategies that require consumer participation: The periodic release of products or emergence of a trend, for example. In some instances, planned obsolescence conduct reaches beyond the accepted competitive practices, desired by consumers, to conduct that clearly harms consumers with no countervailing rationale. Such practices effectively cease product function prematurely, either through product failure or poor performance and inefficient repair costs. While this conduct largely evades legal capture, it intersects with many …
How Does A Mystic Listen? Reimagining Listening Through Karl Rahner’S Notion Of A Mystic In Pope Francis’ Synod On Synodality, Theodbriel Repizo Villariza Jr
How Does A Mystic Listen? Reimagining Listening Through Karl Rahner’S Notion Of A Mystic In Pope Francis’ Synod On Synodality, Theodbriel Repizo Villariza Jr
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
Karl Rahner envisions that devout Christians of the future must be mystics, having a genuine experience of God’s presence in their particular context. This thesis aims to recover the role of mystics in the life of the Church, specifically in Pope Francis' challenge for the Catholic Church to embrace an identity of being a synodal Church. To be a synodal Church necessitates being a listening Church. Rahner promotes a form of mysticism where the pathway to be in union with God is one’s engagement in the world. For him, mystics witness how it is to be receptive to grace, that …
Uncovering The Mimicry Of Online Review Breadth And Depth And Its Subsequent Effect On Consumer Responses, Andrea Pelaez Martinez
Uncovering The Mimicry Of Online Review Breadth And Depth And Its Subsequent Effect On Consumer Responses, Andrea Pelaez Martinez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Word-of-mouth (WOM) in marketing occurs when consumers discuss a company's product or service or any consumption experience with their friends, family, and others with whom they have any relationship. With the advent of social media, this phenomenon has expanded rapidly into virtual environments where consumer conversation is enabled through chats, forums, social media posts, and online reviews. In response to this rapid growth of online WOM, academics and practitioners have focused their interest on this phenomenon and its implications on consumers, firms, and society. So far, the evidence of the critical role that online WOM plays in helping consumers make …

Chapter 1 - Narrative Economics and the U.S. Stock Market: Insights from Twitter: This chapter examines the impact of economic narratives disseminated by influential Twitter users on the returns of the S&P500 index. The users are prominent economists working as researchers or policy advisors, institutional investors, and media analysts whose tweets have the potential to become viral and provide credible interpretations of events. To quantify the narratives, I introduce a measure of content propagation that accounts for the sentiment of each tweet adjusted by the influence of the user on the Twitter platform. The measure significantly predicts S&P 500 index …
Machine-Learning Qsar-Based Novel Drug Identification To Inhibit Retinoblastoma Extracellular Vesicle Release And Metastatic Signaling, Kunhui Huang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are lipid-enclosed particles that are generated by most types of cells and have been identified as an important mechanism for cell communication aside from cell direct contact. EVs contain a variety of functional macromolecules including proteins, lipids, RNA, which can be transferred from the host cells to target cells at a distance. The molecular pathways of EV biogenesis have been studied intensely in recent decades and the process involves several key genes and proteins. Cancer cell released EVs target distant tissues and upregulate signals that are attractive to cancer cell homing, playing a role in tumor progression …
Legislating The Taboo: Taboo Subcultures, Political Communication, And Public Policy, Rebecca S. Krisel
Legislating The Taboo: Taboo Subcultures, Political Communication, And Public Policy, Rebecca S. Krisel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation, titled "Legislating the Taboo: From Subculture to Public Policy," comprises three articles that collectively delve into the intersection of taboo subcultures, political communication, and public policy. While the fields of sociology and anthropology more thoroughly explore the concepts of "taboo" and "subcultures," political science has not given them due attention. This research seeks to bridge this gap by examining how taboo subcultures evolve into political constituencies with policy demands and how these demands are communicated through various mediums, including mainstream and social media.
The first article, "Virtual Dance Communities and The Right to the Internet," investigates how the …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We introduce new leader humility scales capturing a theoretically rich conceptualization of leader-expressed humility aligned with traditional and ethically-grounded philosophies. These scales draw from recent inductive research (Oc et al., 2015) identifying nine dimensions of leader-expressed humility: (1) having an accurate view of self, (2) recognizing follower strengths and achievements, (3) modeling teachability and being correctable, (4) leading by example, (5) showing modesty, (6) working together for the collective good, (7) empathy and approachability, (8) showing mutual respect and fairness, and (9) mentoring and coaching. The first three dimensions overlap with the most prominent conceptualization of leader-expressed humility in the …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This research investigates how formal versus informal supervisor support behaviours shape employees' affect- and cognition-based trust across cultures of varying power distance. Using data from in-depth interviews, Study 1 found that trust-enhancing supervisor behaviours were more formal, status conscious and imposing in India (a high power distance culture) than in the Netherlands (a low power distance culture); unlike in India, supervisors acted more like friends or equals with their subordinates in the Netherlands. Using vignettes, Study 2 found that, compared to informal support behaviours, formal support behaviours increased both affect- and cognition-based trust among Indian participants, but among US participants, …

Job Insecurity And Well-Being: Integrating Life History And Transactional Stress Theories, Nina Sirola
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The current research proposes and tests a novel model explaining how job insecurity shapes well-being and has consequences for stratification and inequality. I draw on evolutionary life history theory, which proposes that growing up in a poorer versus wealthier environment impacts the sense of control people feel when exposed to threat in adulthood. I integrate this perspective with transactional stress theory to propose that job insecurity has a disproportionately negative effect on employees from poorer backgrounds, leading to lower engagement and higher emotional exhaustion among such employees, while those from wealthier backgrounds are buffered against these effects. These responses to …

The Science Of Creating Brand Associations: A Continuous Trinity Model Linking Brand Associations To Learning Processes, Christilene Du Plessis, Serena D'Hooge, Steven Sweldens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The Continuous Trinity Model (CTM) of brand associations integrates 50 years of consumer learning research with recent conceptualizations of consciousness. Three types of brand associations are proposed at the representational level (expectations, meaning, and affect), corresponding to three types of learning at the process level (predictive learning, referential learning, and direct affect transfer). A core proposition derived from research on automaticity holds that the operating conditions of the learning processes vary on a continuum from mostly System 2 for predictive learning to mostly System 1 for direct affect transfer, with referential learning as a mix of the two. The CTM …

What Drives Employers’ Favorability Ratings On Employer Review Platforms? The Role Of Symbolic, Personal, And Emotional Content, Christoph E. Höllig, Andranik Tumasjan, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Employer review platforms have changed the recruitment landscape by allowing current and former employees to post messages about an employer outside of direct company control. Therefore, they have emerged as an important form of third-party employer branding. However, we know little about how such open-ended comments relate to the key variable in employer reviews: employers’ favorability rating. Therefore, we start by situating this variable among other constructs in the employer branding space. Next, we build theory on how content in the open-ended comments of an employer review relates to the positivity or negativity of the reviews’ favorability rating. We test …

Higher Education And Ableism: Experiences Of Disabled Students’ In England During The Covid-19 Pandemic – Stepping Into Inclusion, Suanne Gibson, Zeta Brown, Jen Shute, Mette Westander
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper details the persistent and continuous struggles disabled students experience studying in HE, and how these were exaggerated during the Covid-19 pandemic (DSUK, 2020). We critically consider progress made by Widening Participation and related equality policy, determining that higher education (HE) continues to be an ableist system and space because inclusion is not understood, nor prioritised, at either strategic or practitioner levels. Furthermore, orthodox pathological positions on disability continue and are re-created via hegemony, ignorance, and fear (Madriaga, 2007; Gibson, 2020). Attempts at practices for the inclusion and equality of disabled students take place within the constraints of other …

Background: Stigma exacerbates power imbalances and societal disparities, significantly impacting diverse identities and health conditions, particularly for low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Though crucial for dismantling harmful stereotypes, and enhancing healthcare utilisation, existing research on anti-stigma interventions is limited with its condition-focused approach. We aimed to thoroughly evaluate peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed literature for a comprehensive review of anti-stigma interventions for diverse identities and all health conditions in LMICs. Methods: This review systematically explored peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed literature, in ten electronic databases up to January 30, 2024, covering all anti-stigma interventions across various stigmatised identities and health conditions in LMICs. Quality …

Measuring what medical care does to improve the lives of patients must be at theheart of what we do (Ryland, Carlile and Kingdon, 2021). A crucial part of achievingthe ambition of parity between physical and mental health is for psychiatry to embrace, use and promote outcome measures as a way of demonstrating the positive impactthat well-resourced and structured mental health services can have for patients, theirfamilies, and society more widely. The Royal College of Psychiatrists strongly endorses and recommends the routine useof patient- and clinician-rated outcome measures in psychiatric practice (Tracy et al.,2022). Outcome measurement can improve care planning, progress-tracking, qualityimprovement, service …

Introduction: In Kenya, there is a lack of data on the number of people with dementia. In this article, we aim to estimate the number of community-dwelling older adults (aged 60 years and above) that are potentially living with dementia in rural Kenya. Methods: Recruitment of older adults occurred through adopting a convenience approach based on the catchment areas served by trained ten Community Health Workers (CHWs). Screening was conducted using the Brief Community Screening Instrument for Dementia (CSI-D), in which prevalence ratios were reported. Regression analyses were run to understand the association between screening outcome and wellbeing, social isolation, …
