Children's Understanding Of The Internet As A Moderator For Age-Related Trust Tendencies, Travis Hicks

Theses and Dissertations

Children take many factors into consideration when deciding to trust an informant, several of which are applicable to the internet as well. No research has been dedicated to studying whether children’s understanding of the internet’s social complexity (capacity to affect society in both good and bad ways) affects the amount of trust they place in the internet. Child participants (N = 97) ages 5 to 11 years were recruited to examine the relationship between age, time spent online, internet use, and trust in the internet, as well as the influence of social complexity understanding on the relationship between age and …

A Systematic Literature Review On Overconfidence And Related Biases Influencing Investment Decision Making, Uttam Karki, Vaneet Bhatia, Dheeraj Sharma

Economic and Business Review

In the current market scenario, it has been observed that biases are among the most significant factors influencing investment decisions. Among these biases, overconfidence is a common phenomenon managers tend to exhibit while making decisions. To understand the role of overconfidence bias in investment decision making, this study thoroughly scrutinizes and consolidates the current research on overconfidence bias. To achieve the objective, this study performs a systematic review of literature utilizing the PRISMA approach and examines 92 journal articles published in the last 20 years. Results suggest that the other two biases—hindsight and confirmation—are related to overconfidence bias. In addition, …

Determining The Cerebellum’S Functional Role In Adolescent Reward Processing, Teagan Mullins Jun 2024

Determining The Cerebellum’S Functional Role In Adolescent Reward Processing, Teagan Mullins

Psychology ETDs

Cerebellar contributions to adolescent reward processing have not been explored in prior research, despite the fact that both reward processing and the cerebellum are undergoing significant maturation during this time. Reward processing in the cerebellum has been found in both adults and in animal models. However, given both maturational changes and a variety of reward related psychopathology that emerges during adolescence, reward processing in the cerebellum during adolescence may not mirror that of the cerebellum during adulthood and may shift over adolescence and be linked to psychopathology. This dissertation reviews the existing literature on cerebellar reward in adolescence (chapter one). …

Seriously ill patients often experience discordant care. Delivering high-quality healthcare requires effective communication to support goal-concordant care.

Pancreatic cancer has a 5-year survival rate of 12% with a high symptom burden. Pancreatic cancer patients often have unmet needs that lead to increased psychological, spiritual, social, and physical needs. Early integration of palliative care can provide high-quality communication and goal-concordant care. A retrospective analysis of MDACC's pancreatic patients found that 34% were referred to palliative care.

A total of 99 undergraduate students from Lawrence University completed an online survey. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected for analyses. The results implied …

The Public Perception And Efficacy Of The Insanity Plea, 1835-1882, Hannah Frank Jun 2024

The Public Perception And Efficacy Of The Insanity Plea, 1835-1882, Hannah Frank

Lawrence University Honors Projects

My project is an essay exploring the early development of the insanity plea in American courtrooms, centering several cases between 1835 and 1882. I argue that it largely failed to serve its intended purpose and was foiled by misuse and prejudice. In each case I cover, I examine what form it took (what was the criteria to be criminally insane at the time?), the reaction of the public to the plea (did the public approve of its usage?) and whether or not it worked (did it acquit the defendant; did he deserve to be acquitted; was he truly insane?). I …

Easy-Ai: Semantic And Composable Glyphs For Representing Ai Systems, Alexis Ellis, Brandon Dave, Hugh Salehi, Subhashini Ganapathy, Cogan Shimizu

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Despite the rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into various research domains and the lives of everyday people, challenges with communicating and understanding these AI systems arise. The lack of a consistent method of communication highlights the need for a transdisciplinary approach to explain the inner workings of AI systems in a cohesive and accessible manner. We thus propose an ontological visual framework using semantically-enhanced, symbols, providing a symbolic language for conveying the structure, purpose, and characteristics of AI systems. The framework encompasses a generalizable glyph set of various AI system components, ensuring both common and obscure architectures can be …

Social Media And The Technological Infrastructure Of Polarization In The United States: How Do We Move Forward?, Phoebe Cordova Jun 2024

Social Media And The Technological Infrastructure Of Polarization In The United States: How Do We Move Forward?, Phoebe Cordova

Dissertations and Theses

The United States is currently experiencing extremely high levels of polarization that is unique to other times in history. One way to account for this historical difference is the fact that polarization is playing out under the novel conditions generated by technology and, specifically, social media. Thus far, work in the area of social media and polarization has primarily focused on proving a causal relationship between the two with contributions across disciplines remaining disparate without an integrative framework of understanding. Strikingly, there are few contributions from the field of conflict resolution, indicative of the more sweeping need for the field …

Synesthetic Symbolism: Community Engagement With The Sacred At The Boudhanath Stupa, Madeleine E. Tevonian Jun 2024

Synesthetic Symbolism: Community Engagement With The Sacred At The Boudhanath Stupa, Madeleine E. Tevonian

Lawrence University Honors Projects

This paper is a discussion of the complex relationship between the Great Boudhanath Stupa in the Kathmandu Valley, and the diverse Buddhist community that surrounds it. I argue that liberative sense experience and movement-encoded cultural knowledge make the community of practitioners a part of the stupa—and thus necessary to any examination of it. My argument is contextualized by a background on stupas and etymology of several Sanskrit and Tibetan terms, and I utilize a framework of religious studies concepts of sacred space and pilgrimage as well as on-site anthropological fieldwork focusing on practitioners’ daily lives. I investigate how the stupa …

From Identity To Intimacy: Exploring Transgender People’S Dating Attitudes For Gender Experience, Finneas Frawley Jun 2024

From Identity To Intimacy: Exploring Transgender People’S Dating Attitudes For Gender Experience, Finneas Frawley

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Of the research that exists on transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people’s dating lives, much of it focuses on cisgender people’s negative perceptions of TGNC partners. The little that does focus on TGNC experiences offers limited and contrasting information about TGNC dating preferences for cisgender and TGNC partners. Using an online survey distributed to TGNC adults (N = 246), we explore TGNC people’s attitudes toward both cisgender and TGNC partners as well as what influences these attitudes. Our predictive model is modified from the Gender Minority Stress and Resilience (GMSR) model (Testa et al., 2015), and we draw upon both …

The Untold Love Story Of Aphra Behn's The History Of The Nun, Anaclara Castro-Santana Jun 2024

The Untold Love Story Of Aphra Behn's The History Of The Nun, Anaclara Castro-Santana

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

Aphra Behn’s The History of the Nun (1688) is a complex narrative that challenges gender norms and moral conventions, while providing multifaceted illustrations of how restrictions of freedom engender rebellion. Erstwhile a critically neglected piece, this short novel has recently attracted renovated attention on account of its sophisticated narrative perspective, ambivalent moral, and general exploration of unconventional themes, including sexual nonconformity. Taking its cue from this critical landscape, this article explores the text’s queer dimensions, focusing on a crucial yet often overlooked scene depicting sapphic eroticism. Unpacking the internal dynamics and external implications of this passage, the essay argues for …

The Maternal Icon In Eleanor Sleath's The Orphan Of The Rhine, Esmeralda Orndorff, Joanne E. Myers Jun 2024

The Maternal Icon In Eleanor Sleath's The Orphan Of The Rhine, Esmeralda Orndorff, Joanne E. Myers

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

In recent years, Eleanor Sleath’s long-neglected The Orphan of the Rhine has received attention as a valuable addition to the Gothic canon. In particular, critics have hailed the unconventionality of her worldly heroine Julie de Rubine. In this article, we resituate Julie’s exceptionalism in a specifically post-Reformation context, arguing that, in Julie, Sleath has created a powerful maternal icon whose mediating authority contests iconoclastic attacks on Marian devotion in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England. Julie is, as critics have observed, the moral center of the text, and we show how that role is warranted specifically by her religiosity. Although partway through …
