A Shock To The Heart? A Case Of Phantom Shocks In A Patient With Brugada Syndrome, Virginia Gonzalez, Md, Rebecca Goldfinger-Chanin, Md, Behzad B. Pavri, Md
The Medicine Forum
Brugada syndrome is an inherited condition characterized by an increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) secondary to lethal ventricular arrhythmias occurring most often in the fourth decade of life. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are recommended in patients who have documented ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF) and in patients presenting with a spontaneous type 1 Brugada pattern on electrocardiogram (ECG) and a history of arrhythmic-sounding syncope.1 However, patients with ICDs are at risk of developing “phantom shocks” which occur when a patient reports the sensation of receiving a shock that is not confirmed upon subsequent device interrogation.2 …

A Pilot Intervention To Promote Physical Activity Participation Among Youth With Cerebral Palsy: Action Research, Karin Kleinhans Dr
International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity and International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment and Deafblindness
Introduction Physical activity (PA) is important for health and well-being, yet youth with cerebral palsy (CP) in South Africa encounter structural, sociocultural, and psychological barriers that hinder participation. To ensure they can experience the benefits of PA, effective, feasible, and acceptable interventions are needed. This study piloted a psycho-educational behaviour change protocol to assess its feasibility and acceptability in promoting active lifestyles.
Methodology An 18-week, non-randomised trial was conducted with five participants (ages 15–24), with GMFCS levels I, III, and IV, including youth who use assistive technology. Participants tracked their PA using activity monitors and self-reported diaries. Semi-structured interviews explored …

International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity and International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment and Deafblindness
Introduction: Mothers of autistic children face physiological and psychological health concerns (Li et al., 2022; Lovell et al., 2021). While yoga may improve physical and emotional well-being in parents of children with disabilities (Özdemir & Karadağ, 2024), research on yoga programs specifically designed for mothers of autistic children remains limited. To develop effective yoga interventions that promote health and well-being of mothers of autistic children, it is essential to understand their perspectives on yoga and the factors influencing their participation. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the attitudes and intentions of mothers of autistic children toward yoga participation.

Understanding The Experience Of Participating In A University-Hosted Inclusive Sports Event, Yaejee Kim, So-Yeun Kim
International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity and International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment and Deafblindness
Introduction A foundational principle of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is the right of individuals with disabilities to fully participate in society (UN, 2019). University-based inclusive sports events can offer a structured, professional, and safe environment that facilitates meaningful social interactions and attitudinal changes toward individuals with disability (IWD) (Kim & Kim, 2023). However, empirical research on the experiential impact of such events remains limited. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of participants in a university-based inclusive sports event (UBISE) and to derive implications for promoting sustainable social participation for IWD.
Methodology Thirty-six participants (including individuals with …

Introduction
The ‘I Can’ Programme is a six-week remote health and well-being initiative developed by Vision Sports Ireland to support adults who are blind and vision impaired (BVI) in improving physical activity, diet, sleep, and stress management. BVI individuals face significant barriers to physical activity, contributing to lower participation rates and poorer health outcomes. This evaluation examines the programme’s impact on lifestyle behaviour changes and long-term habit sustainability. By assessing physical activity levels, well-being, and engagement, the study provides insights into accessible, evidence-based interventions that empower BVI individuals to lead healthier, more active lives.

Balancing Care And Challenge: Integrating Trauma-Informed Learning And Desirable Difficulty, Cerise L. Glenn, Katie Lind, Jessica D. Mccall
Feminist Pedagogy
Amid changing landscapes of campus culture (e.g., new technologies, increasing accommodations requests, program reviews), we utilize pedagogical strategies to expand feminist frontiers in ways that re-energize and promote an inclusive culture of feminist pedagogy. By implementing “desirable difficulty,” we seek collaborative learning environments that address the changing needs of students and teachers while fostering learning effectiveness. Combining aspects of trauma-informed learning with desirable difficulty helps balance these demands with a culture of care, created through approaches designed to promote learning opportunities and meet student needs without overwhelming faculty.

The Phoenix Takes Flight: The Importance Of Trauma-Informed Positive Education, Kathleen Turner Ledgerwood
Feminist Pedagogy
Since the pandemic, trauma has touched almost everyone. Pervasive illness, death, and isolation affected us in ways we have not paused to process. Many students were young and particularly affected by the pandemic. The rise in mental health concerns has made it more imperative to address mental health within our pedagogy. This article will outline strategies for helping to manage mental health within our pedagogy in order to better help everyone using an approach that aligns with trauma-informed and positive psychology pedagogical practices. Our future is one of compassionate, caring, trauma-informed work that bolsters the well-being of our students.

Choose Your Own Reading Assignment: A Strategy To Diversify Perspectives In Class Discussion, Breena J. Brockmann
Feminist Pedagogy
This activity reimagines course reading assignments by offering students a choice between multiple texts that work together to explore a shared theory or theme. Students are invited to select readings that align with their interests or learning goals. This activity embraces the feminist pedagogical principle of collaborative learning and uses the active learning strategy of learning through teaching by asking students to work in groups to create mini lessons that teach their classmates about their selected reading. Through their discussion of multiple case studies, the class develops an understanding of feminist theory as “geographically, historically, and culturally grounded (Mohanty, 2003, …

Qualitative Exploration Of Applied Sport Psychology Practices In Deaflympic Sports, Alon Markov-Glazer, Rainer Schliermann
International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity and International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment and Deafblindness
Introduction Athletes competing in elite Deaf sports, known as Deaflympic sports, display unique sociocultural characteristics (Clark & Mesch, 2018). Yet, sport psychology research has largely overlooked this group of athletes for decades (Markov-Glazer et al., 2023). This study therefore aimed to examine sport psychology practices in Deaflympic sport, focusing on identifying distinctive characteristics, needs, and preferences of this athlete group.
Methodology To achieve this goal, six in-depth focus group interviews were conducted with 23 active Deaflympic athletes (26.1% female) and four coaches from individual sports (e.g., tennis) and team sports (e.g., handball). Participants discussed their use of psychological skills and …

Chances And Challenges For Physical Activity In Adolescents And Young Adults With Hemophilia, Tabea Nauschuetz, Ulrich Theobald
International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity and International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment and Deafblindness
Introduction
Hemophilia is a congenital coagulation disorder that typically affects men. Due to reduced activity of coagulation factor, people with hemophilia (pwh) have an increased tendency to bleed. Thanks to modern treatment, pwh can lead a normal everyday life; nevertheless, pwh are still dependent on a regular substitution of coagulation factor. Traditionally, pwh have been advised to avoid physical activity (pa) altogether due to the risk of bleeding events. However, it has been shown that sport can have a positive effect on physical and mental health (Von Mackensen et al., 2016). This study focuses on needs and barriers of young …

Title of the submission
The existential nature of touch exchange for blind people as a bridge to confidence and participation in physical activities. A qualitative preparatory study using Reflexive Thematic Analysis.
Introduction
Lack of full proprioception in visually impaired and blind people (VI) negatively affects their lifestyle and, in combination with structural and societal barriers, lead to low participation in physical activities (Alcaraz-Rodríguez et al., 2021; Lieberman et al., 2018), deemed to build confidence and social interaction with further benefit to their phycological well-being (Elsman et al., 2018; Ilhan et al., 2020). Being confident in touching and being touched by …

International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity and International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment and Deafblindness
Introduction
The practice of sports has a fundamental role in guaranteeing the rights to health and citizenship, being considered an inalienable human right for every human being and through it, it is possible to bring people together, break barriers and impositions that can limit the access of people with disabilities to the rights that are guaranteed to them. Recently, the severe humanitarian and economic crisis in Venezuela has caused many citizens of that country to migrate to Brazil, including citizens with disabilities. Considering sports as a right of every human being, the objective of this study is to describe the …

Safe Spaces Or Enclaves? Negotiating Social Hierarchies In Specialized Pe For Students With Vi, Martin Giese, Brigitta Höger, Stefan Meier
International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity and International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment and Deafblindness
Students with blindness and visual impairment (BVI) face significant barriers to participation as well as social exclusion in inclusive schools, particularly in Physical Education (PE) (Haegele et al., 2021). As a result, many are prompted to transfer to specialized schools in order to continue their education (Giese, 2021). However, the dynamics of how participation and social hierarchies are negotiated in specialized PE remain largely unexplored.
To address this gap, we conducted individual and group interviews during participant-led school tours, we gathered insights from 19 students with BVI (aged 14-21, 12 female) and three sighted PE teachers (2 female) at an …

International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity and International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment and Deafblindness
People with physical disabilities after an accident experience greater stress and face social and psychological challenges in accepting and overcoming disability. In addition to the loss of physical function, it leads to restrictions in economic and social activities, causes confusion in self-concept and values, and may result in psychological issues such as depression, making it harder for them to accept their changed life.
The purpose of this study is to explore the process of entering and adapting to a para-baseball team for individuals with physical disability after an accident. This study aimed to gain an understanding of the common characteristics …

Historic racism supported practices such as redlining, discriminatory zoning, and racial steering that separated people and determined the flow of resources and investment into neighborhoods. Communities continue to experience the long tail effects of historic patterns of racism. That is, historic inequities influence the opportunities that residents have to connect with each other and thrive in urban areas. Urban neighborhood parks have the potential to bridge social divides and bring a community together. This basic qualitative research study examines two contested heritage sites in St. Louis, Missouri: Fairground Park, a park in a Black neighborhood that has been historically disinvested …

Ineffective retention strategies for nursing home staff can negatively affect the continuity of patient care, employee morale, and patient outcomes. Nursing home leaders who struggle to implement changes and increase staff retention and quality of patient care are at high risk of business instability. Grounded in Greenleaf’s servant leadership conceptualization and Kotter’s eight-step change model, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore strategies nursing home leaders use to implement change, retain staff, and enhance the quality of patient care. Data sources consisted of semistructured interviews, public websites, and current and archival public documents. Thematic analysis yielded five …

An Evaluation Of The Prevent-Teach-Reinforce Secondary (Ptr-Sec) Model For Middle School Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Kevin R. Ochoa Casas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) may encounter a wide range of challenges in academic settings. Despite several initiatives aiming to address these challenges in the school setting, research indicates that school-based professionals are still struggling to adequately support this population, using the individualized functional behavior assessment and behavior intervention plan (FBA-BIP) process. The Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) model utilizes a manualized, team-based approach to streamline the individualized FBA-BIP process. However, more research is needed to assess the effectiveness of the PTR model to better support middle school students with EBD, particularly, in the areas of generalization and maintenance effects. This …

Strain In The System: Examining The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Pathways Into Cybercrime, Hannah R. Murphy
Strain In The System: Examining The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Pathways Into Cybercrime, Hannah R. Murphy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and cybercriminal behavior among 238 active hackers with verified website defacements identified through the Zone-H archive. Drawing upon General Strain Theory, this research investigates whether childhood trauma influences both the developmental timing and motivational aspects of hacking activities. Using ordinary least squares and ordered logistic regression analyses with country-clustered standard errors, the study tested two hypotheses: (1) that higher ACE scores would be associated with earlier onset of hacking behavior, and (2) that higher ACE scores would predict increased likelihood of engaging in revenge-motivated hacking. Results revealed a complex relationship …

Grounded in transformational leadership theory and the three-component organizational commitment model, it analyzed leadership practices and their relationship with employee commitment and retention. Using a descriptive-correlational research design and purposive sampling, the study collected data from 259 employees out of a population of 785. The findings revealed that transformational leadership practices, particularly individualized consideration and inspirational motivation, were highly observed among leaders. Employees reported high levels of normative, affective, and continuance commitment, while indicators such as training …
China’S Role In A Future Korean War, Jake Rinaldi
China’S Role In A Future Korean War, Jake Rinaldi
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article argues that China’s intervention in a Korean conflict will hinge more on North Korea’s ability to hold territory than on bilateral ties. Rather than treat Chinese intervention as a yes-or-no proposition, this study models three scenarios—full intervention, sustained support, and limited support—based on North Korean resilience. Using Chinese-language sources and scenario-based analysis, it assesses how each model would shape key functional areas such as ISR, cyber, materiel, and force posture. The findings offer US defense planners a framework for anticipating variable People’s Liberation Army involvement in a future Korea contingency.

The problem addressed in this study was the influence of leadership on low treatment completion rates in a nonprofit outpatient substance use disorder program in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The purpose of this case study was to examine how leadership styles, decision-making processes, and supervisory alignment affected client engagement and treatment outcomes at the program. The study was grounded in the Baldrige Excellence Framework, which provided a systems-thinking lens to assess leadership behavior and organizational performance. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with two senior leaders and a review of limited internal documents, including the organization’s …
