Abstract: In December 1941, the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong was the site of a doomed last stand, when the Imperial Japanese Army assaulted the British enclave near-simultaneously with the strike on Pearl Harbor. Among Hong Kong’s multinational defenders were two battalions of Canadian infantry, designated “C Force.” They held out for a significant period and inflicted heavy casualties upon the Japanese, despite the fact that the Canadians were under-trained, under-equipped and fighting a battle that could not be won. This article is the first major study of combat motivation in the Battle of Hong Kong, taking the Canadian …

"That Movie Changed Me!" Effect Of Induced Mood On Story Interpretation, Rachel Deborah Thayer Jul 2025

"That Movie Changed Me!" Effect Of Induced Mood On Story Interpretation, Rachel Deborah Thayer

2025 Symposium

Studies have found that mood can affect a variety of aspects of cognition, such as memory, comprehension, and decision making. In one such study, participants identified with the character that reflected their hypnotically induced mood, and in another, story endings that were incongruent with the film clip-induced mood were more difficult to process. In the current study, film clips were used to induce moods, and participants were asked to write an ending to an ambiguous story. The prediction is that participants’ completions will reflect their induced mood. To date, 25 Eastern Washington University undergraduate students have been recruited and screened …

Comparison Of Offspring Growth Models In Atlantic Puffins Fratercula Arctica , Katja H. Kochvar, Raul Zabala Belenguer, Pierre-Paul Bitton

Marine Ornithology

Growth of morphological traits in the offspring of many seabirds, including Atlantic Puffins Fratercula arctica, has typically been characterized by linear models despite displaying nonlinear patterns. We assessed the fit of six typical avian growth models to measurements of puffling mass, wing length, and tenth primary length. Across all three biometrics, the first- and second-best performing models were nonlinear (i.e., quadratic, logistic, extreme value function); these models were then used to generate separate growth curves for individual pufflings and extract easily interpretable and comparable parameter estimates. We recommend the reported models in future studies incorporating metrics of puffling growth and …
