The State Of Telemental Health Training And Education In Cacrep-Accredited Counselor Education Master’S Programs, Jocelyn Novella, Davide Mariotti

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

Despite the frequent use of telemental health (TMH) to deliver clinical mental health counseling, there are few specific guidelines for the teaching of this important topic in CACREP-accredited counselor education programs. This study examined TMH training and education in master’s-level CACREP-accredited counselor education programs by surveying CACREP liaisons (n = 62). The results were analyzed using frequencies, and questions were cross-tabulated with basic information about the programs’ faculty, students, and method of teaching. Results will inform current practices in the training of counselors in this expanding delivery system.

Evaluating Counseling Skills Through Language Style Matching: A Computer-Aided Text Analysis Of Suicide And General Counseling Transcripts, Chung-Fan Ni, Justin Jacques, Charles Silber, Cass Dykeman

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

This pilot study applies Computer-Aided Text Analysis (CATA) to examine Language Style Matching (LSM) in counseling transcripts, offering a novel metric for counselor education and supervision. Analyzing 50 suicide-focused and 100 general counseling sessions using LIWC-22 software, we found high LSM scores in both contexts (suicide-focused: M = 0.906; general: M = 0.903). Bayesian analysis provided moderate evidence (BF01 = 5.048) in support of the null hypothesis, indicating no significant difference between the two session types. The consistently high LSM suggests counselors effectively build strong alliances and align with client goals across topics. LSM analysis provides an objective measure of …

Artificial Intelligence And Research: Resources And Implications For Counselor Educators, Alexandra Gantt-Howrey, Aileen Tierney, Natese R. Dockery, Uzma Khan, Kaprea Johnson, Erin M. Burgess

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

Scholars have noted various benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) for researchers, though researchers have yet to explore what AI-research resources (AI-RR) are available to counselor educators and how AI-RR may be used to support counselor educators’ research efforts. We conducted a systematic website review to describe the AI-RR available to counselor educators and implications for their use, yielding N = 31 final resources. Findings indicated AI-RR may support quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods counseling research efforts. Implications include a need for counselor educators and scholars to enhance their knowledge and application of AI in their research.

Being There: Perils Of Disembodied Mediation, Rob Mcniff

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

Following the growth of online mediation during the COVID-19 pandemic, practitioners and ADR scholars sought to delineate the virtues and shortcomings of the online process. Many report satisfaction with online mediation. Still, critics find the process devoid of emotional experience or otherwise “dehumanizing.” As ADR practitioners contrast online and face-to-face experiences, and recommend a forum to disputing parties, they should acknowledge that online platforms can never replicate physical encounters between embodied persons. This Article draws on the work of 20th century philosophers, psychologists, and sociologists to explore mediation as corporeal encounter between embodied subjects. Online mediation, by constraining the involvement …

Envisioning The Virgin’S Assumption In Renaissance Florence: Reflections Of Religious And Private Patronage, Beth I. Campbell Jul 2025

Envisioning The Virgin’S Assumption In Renaissance Florence: Reflections Of Religious And Private Patronage, Beth I. Campbell

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

This study examines religious artistic works by Renaissance Florentine masters in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, employed as instruments of spiritual inspiration and devices of persuasion in the Republic. Through their depictions of Old and New Testament stories, artists portrayed significant biblical characters and ideals to both enlighten and influence. Not surprisingly, the life of the Virgin Mary was a popular subject of such pieces. However, one important event commonly illustrated was never definitively described in the Bible: that of the Virgin’s Assumption into Heaven. Earlier studies have considered patron influence in fifteenth-century Italian Renaissance interpretations of religious …

Developing A Curiosity-Centered Pedagogy For Music Technology, Jeff Kaiser Jul 2025

Developing A Curiosity-Centered Pedagogy For Music Technology, Jeff Kaiser

Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction

Two of the foundations of learning are attention and active engagement, the latter being “an algorithm also called curiosity” (Dehaene 2021, p. 145). Curiosity is fundamental to being human, encourages exploration, and when curiosity is engaged, optimizes learning. We know that a person who is not engaged does not learn as much “because learning requires an active generation of hypotheses…” (Dehaene 2021, p. xxvii) as well as testing and refining these hypotheses through exploration. Curiosity motivates and deepens this process.

In music technology, we have the attention of our students, as the relevance and meaningfulness of our area of study …

Enhanced Restoration Of Covid-19 Ct Scan Images Utilizing Advanced Wiener Filtering Techniques, Warqaa Shaher Alazawee, Marwa Subhi Ibrahim, Raghda Salam Al Mahdawi, Ali Albu-Rghaif, Ahmed Sabri Altaie

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) and rapidly spread worldwide from late 2019. While Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) is the primary diagnostic tool, its sensitivity ranges from only 60% to 70%, leading to false negatives. Computed Tomography (CT) imaging has emerged as a valuable alternative for accurate diagnosis; however, the quality of CT images is often degraded by motion-induced blur and additive noise, particularly in children, individuals with mental health conditions, or those with phobias of CT scans. This study aims to enhance COVID-19 CT image quality …

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Resulted In Unprecedented Reproductive Failure And Movement Nehaviour By Northern Gannets, Noah G. Careen, Sydney M. Collins, Kyle J. N. D’Entremont, Jordan Wight, Ishraq Rahman, Kathryn E. Hargan, Andrew S. Lang, William A. Montevecchi

Marine Ornithology

In 2022, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus resulted in mass mortality throughout seabird colonies in the North Atlantic Ocean. While mortalities and transmission of the virus are being documented, other effects are less understood. We documented nest abandonment and unprecedented reproductive failure by Northern Gannets Morus bassanus at Cape St. Mary’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, the species’ southernmost colony. Reproductive success in 2022 was the lowest on record at 17%, which was likely a result of adults abandoning the nest and succumbing to avian influenza virus (AIV) infection. Following the AIV outbreak at Cape St. Mary’s, we also documented …

Notes On A Plover Briefly Incubating An Oystercatcher Nest In Patagonia, José O. Valdebenito Jul 2025

Notes On A Plover Briefly Incubating An Oystercatcher Nest In Patagonia, José O. Valdebenito

Marine Ornithology

A breeding female Two-banded Plover Charadrius falklandicus was observed incubating the eggs of a Magellanic Oystercatcher Haematopus leucopodus while the nest was unattended by the oystercatcher. The behaviour was likely triggered by the plover’s nest becoming momentarily inaccessible, and so, being in incubation mode, the bird responded by incubating the nearest nest available. This is the first report of such behaviour while the oystercatcher was nearby, and the plover nest was still active and in sight.

Effects Of A Vagrant Arctic Fox Alopex Lagopus On An Isolated Newfoundland Seabird Community, Raul Zabala Belenguer, Amy C. Wilson, Katja H. Kochvar, Sabina I. Wilhelm, Pierre-Paul Bitton

Marine Ornithology

We report predation by an Arctic Fox Alopex lagopus on two seabird species, Atlantic Puffins Fratercula arctica and Leach’s Storm Petrels Hydrobates leucorhous, nesting on Bakeapple Island, Little Fogo Islands, Newfoundland, Canada. This event took place in 2022, when a whole-island inspection revealed that fox, facilitated by over-ice invasion, killed at least 139 adult storm petrels and 8 puffin chicks. The fox also dug out 83 storm petrel and 4 puffin burrows. Breeding by seabirds on the island, which harbours some of the northernmost colonies in Newfoundland, was also largely disrupted; we documented extremely low egg and chick production values …

A Systematic Review Of Trends In Research On Seabird Behavioral Flexibility, M. Candelaria Biagiotti Barchiesi, Laura M. Biondi, German O. García Jul 2025

A Systematic Review Of Trends In Research On Seabird Behavioral Flexibility, M. Candelaria Biagiotti Barchiesi, Laura M. Biondi, German O. García

Marine Ornithology

There has been an increase in interest in the study of behavioral flexibility for its role in how organisms face disturbances and changes in their environment. However, there is not much research on this topic for seabirds, whose conservation status is affected by multiple issues related to changes in their environment. The goal of this paper was to analyze research on seabird behavioral flexibility and to identify knowledge gaps. A systematic review was conducted using academic search engines that included articles published from 1986 to 2022. In the 143 articles that were analyzed, the following were identified: publication date, family …

Medical History And Post-Release Survival Of Rehabilitated California Brown Pelicans Pelecanus Occidentalis Californicus, 2009-2019, Rebecca S. Duerr, Deborah L. Jaques, Barton G. Selby, Julie S. Skoglund, Suzanne Kosina Jul 2025

Medical History And Post-Release Survival Of Rehabilitated California Brown Pelicans Pelecanus Occidentalis Californicus, 2009-2019, Rebecca S. Duerr, Deborah L. Jaques, Barton G. Selby, Julie S. Skoglund, Suzanne Kosina

Marine Ornithology

California Brown Pelicans Pelecanus occidentalis californicus rehabilitated in 2009–2019 were released with metal federal and blue plastic auxiliary leg bands. Resighting data were obtained from the US Geological Survey’s Bird Banding Laboratory, International Bird Rescue’s citizen science reporting forms, and non-breeding communal roost site surveys. Medical problems and demographic data were assessed in relation to whether birds were resighted, whether they were alive at the most recent resighting, and by longevity after release. The 1418 blue-banded individuals in the study were admitted for rehabilitation and released 1 465 times, and 49.9% were resighted at least once. At the most recent …

High-Contrast Banners Designed To Deter Seabirds From Gillnets Reduce Target Fish Catch, William A. Montevecchi, Jessika Lamarre, Yann Rouxel, Marina W. Montevecchi, Robert J. Blackmore, Christina Bourne, Caleb S. Spiegel Jul 2025

High-Contrast Banners Designed To Deter Seabirds From Gillnets Reduce Target Fish Catch, William A. Montevecchi, Jessika Lamarre, Yann Rouxel, Marina W. Montevecchi, Robert J. Blackmore, Christina Bourne, Caleb S. Spiegel

Marine Ornithology

The incidental catch of non-target species in fishing gear (i.e., bycatch) is a global threat to sustainability and conservation in marine systems. Seabirds experience substantial bycatch mortality, with gillnets having the greatest impacts of any fishing gear. Widespread mitigation to reduce seabird bycatch in gillnet fisheries is tenuous, and information on bycatch in inshore surface-set gillnets remains a major knowledge gap. To help address these issues, we collaborated with commercial fishers to test the efficacy of high-contrast banners designed to alert seabirds. In waters of Newfoundland, Canada, banners were attached to surface-set gillnets for Atlantic Herring Clupea harengus and were …

Breeding Microhabitat Patterns Among Sympatric Tropical Larids, Antonio Garcia-Quintas, Dennis Denis, Christophe Barbraud, Sophie Lanco Bertrand Jul 2025

Breeding Microhabitat Patterns Among Sympatric Tropical Larids, Antonio Garcia-Quintas, Dennis Denis, Christophe Barbraud, Sophie Lanco Bertrand

Marine Ornithology

The selection of breeding microhabitat (nesting sites) affects successful reproduction in seabirds, yet the process of nesting-site selection in sympatric tropical species remains poorly known. During the 2021 breeding season, we assessed nesting-site selection among five larid species at three cays of Cuba and quantified explanatory variables. Random forest classification models were used to assess which landscape features among eight variables best explained site selection by each species. Patterns were clear for most species, especially the highly gregarious Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii, Royal Tern Thalasseus maximus, and Sandwich Tern T. sandvicensis. Patterns were consistent among the study cays. Dominant plant …

Nocturnal Flight Activity By Northern Gannets Morus Bassanus In Response To Predator Presence, Kyle J.N. D’Entremont, William A. Montevecchi Jul 2025

Nocturnal Flight Activity By Northern Gannets Morus Bassanus In Response To Predator Presence, Kyle J.N. D’Entremont, William A. Montevecchi

Marine Ornithology

The Northern Gannet Morus bassanus typically flies only during the day, with minimal flight activity following civil twilight. Here we document nocturnal flight activity by Northern Gannets in response to predation risk by Eastern Coyotes Canis latrans. Eight parental gannets were fitted with GPS/time-depth recorders on 15 July 2021 at mainland nest sites at Cape St. Mary’s, Newfoundland, Canada. Previously, among 506 foraging trips in 2019 and 2020 that were investigated using biologging, only two were initiated at night, suggesting nocturnal departures for foraging are very rare at this colony. Then, however, killings of chicks by coyotes occurred within our …

A Test Of Mechanisms Of Population Differentiation In Gannets (Morus Spp.) Using Comparative Phylogeography And Morphometrics, Victoria L. Friesen, Rebecca Brunt, James A. Morris-Pocock, Drew Sauve, Allan J. Baker, Timothy P. Birt, William S. Davidson, Kyle H. Elliott, William A. Montevecchi

Marine Ornithology

The relative importance of gene flow, genetic drift, and natural selection in driving genetic divergence of local populations, as well as the factors that disrupt gene flow in natural populations, are uncertain. Comparative analyses enable us to test explicit hypotheses regarding the roles of these factors. Gannets (Morus spp.) include three morphologically and ecologically similar seabird species: the Cape Gannet M. capensis, which breeds in southern Africa; the Australasian Gannet M. serrator, which breeds in southeastern Australia and New Zealand; and the Northern Gannet M. bassanus, which breeds in the North Atlantic. We assessed the extent of differentiation in mitochondrial …

On-Land Foraging By Leach's Storm Petrels Oceanodroma Leucorhoa Coincides With Anomalous Weather Conditions, Kyle J.N. D’Entremont, Robert J. Blackmore, Sydney M. Collins, Dave Brown, Ian L. Jones, Bruce Mactavish, Sabina I. Wilhelm, William A. Montevecchi Jul 2025

On-Land Foraging By Leach's Storm Petrels Oceanodroma Leucorhoa Coincides With Anomalous Weather Conditions, Kyle J.N. D’Entremont, Robert J. Blackmore, Sydney M. Collins, Dave Brown, Ian L. Jones, Bruce Mactavish, Sabina I. Wilhelm, William A. Montevecchi

Marine Ornithology

We describe the first known documentation of on-land foraging by Leach’s Storm Petrels Oceanodroma leucorhoa, a behaviour that has been documented only once before among members of the family Hydrobatidae. During a rain/windstorm from 15 to 17 July 2020 in eastern Newfoundland, individuals fed on coastally spawning and beach-cast capelin Mallotus villosus. This behaviour occurred in conjunction with a marine heatwave in the species’ foraging range. Examination showed that wrecked birds were emaciated with negligible stomach contents. This finding, combined with the abnormal weather and foraging behaviour, suggests that these birds were in a weakened state preceding stranding in coastal …

No Evidence Of Habitat Effect On Clutch Size, Egg Quality, And Hatching Success Of The Yellow-Legged Gull Larus Michahellis At A Micro-Spatial Scale, Sergio Delgado, Nere Zorrozua, Juan Arizaga Jul 2025

No Evidence Of Habitat Effect On Clutch Size, Egg Quality, And Hatching Success Of The Yellow-Legged Gull Larus Michahellis At A Micro-Spatial Scale, Sergio Delgado, Nere Zorrozua, Juan Arizaga

Marine Ornithology

In colonial seabirds, the nest substrate that is available and, in particular, the vegetation cover around the nest, are important environmental factors that drive an individual’s nesting selection process and, ultimately, reproductive performance. Using data collected during three consecutive years in a Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis colony from the Bay of Biscay, Spain, we tested whether clutch size, egg volume, and hatching success covaried with the proportion of vegetation cover around nests. We found no effect of vegetation cover on breeding performance. Laying date showed a positive effect on egg volume and a negative effect on hatching success and the …

Ocean Heat Wave Induces Breeding Failure At The Southern Breeding Limit Of The Northern Gannet Morus Bassanus, William A. Montevecchi, Paul M. Regular, Jean-François Rail, Kyran Power, Chris Mooney, Kyle J.N. D’Entremont, Stefan Garthe, Leanne Guzzwell, Sabina I. Wilhelm Jul 2025

Ocean Heat Wave Induces Breeding Failure At The Southern Breeding Limit Of The Northern Gannet Morus Bassanus, William A. Montevecchi, Paul M. Regular, Jean-François Rail, Kyran Power, Chris Mooney, Kyle J.N. D’Entremont, Stefan Garthe, Leanne Guzzwell, Sabina I. Wilhelm

Marine Ornithology

We document unprecedented abandonments and breeding failures by Northern Gannets in eastern Canada at Cape St. Mary’s, Bonaventure Island, and the Magdalen Islands. These events were associated with a marine heat wave during chick rearing in the late summer of 2012. The rapid onset of abandonment at Cape St. Mary’s also coincided with intense lightning and thunder during an overnight storm. Parental desertions at all colonies were transient, resolving over a period of weeks, and appeared to be food-related, resulting in the poorest breeding success on record for each of these colonies. The Northern Gannet’s primary prey during the breeding …

Spatiotemporal Characterization Of Non-Breeding Great Shearwaters Ardenna Gravis Within Their Wintering Range, Kevin D. Powers, David N. Wiley, Anna R. Robuck, Zachary H. Olson, Linda J. Welch, Michael A. Thompson, Les Kaufman

Marine Ornithology

Movements of Great Shearwaters Ardenna gravis wintering in the Northwest Atlantic showed age-based spatial and temporal flexibility, with foraging tactics linked to a defined physical preference of their primary prey. From 2013 to 2018, we tracked 58 Great Shearwaters during their wintering season using platform terminal transmitters deployed in the same area of the southwest Gulf of Maine. Utilization distributions (UDs) for individual birds were created from convex hulls, which were then combined for spatial and temporal analyses. Of the 95% kernel UDs, 55% were contained within the Gulf of Maine and the remainder extended to the Scotian Shelf off …

Behavioral Responses To A Novel Feeding Problem In The Olrog's Gull Larus Atlanticus, Melina V. Castano, Laura M. Biondi, Francisco Zumpano, Marco Favero, Germán O. García Jul 2025

Behavioral Responses To A Novel Feeding Problem In The Olrog's Gull Larus Atlanticus, Melina V. Castano, Laura M. Biondi, Francisco Zumpano, Marco Favero, Germán O. García

Marine Ornithology

Behavioral innovation is considered an expression of behavioral flexibility and is a source of phenotypic plasticity in animals. In this study, we explored the main components of behavioral innovation (neophobia and exploratory behavior) with respect to social context and age in the Olrog’s Gull Larus atlanticus. Twenty consecutive experimental sessions were performed, involving presentation of a plexiglass box containing food; the box could be opened and reached by pushing or pulling different lids, each leading to a food reward. Gulls were able to decrease their neophobic response throughout the course of the experiments. Fifty-three percent of individuals who entered the …

Identity Entanglement In Transnational Body Horror Cinema, Jessica Hughes

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

This paper will examine Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance (2024) within the context of transnational body horror films, arguing that its power lies in its ability to entangle audiences in themes of identity fragmentation. The Substance, echoing work by filmmakers including David Cronenberg, Pedro Almodóvar, and Takashi Miike, depicts the disturbing erosion of self through visceral transformations and psychological disintegration. By analysing Fargeat’s

recent film alongside earlier films such as Videodrome (1983), The Skin I Live In (2011), and Audition (1999), this paper demonstrates how body horror, despite diverse origins, shares a preoccupation with blurring self/other boundaries. Drawing on Blasi’s …

Computational Thinking As A Novel Framework For Enhancing Cognitive Organization In Older Adults With Cognitive Frailty (Letter To The Editor), Daisuke Akiba Jul 2025

Computational Thinking As A Novel Framework For Enhancing Cognitive Organization In Older Adults With Cognitive Frailty (Letter To The Editor), Daisuke Akiba

Publications and Research

As aging populations grow, especially in high-income nations, the burden of dementia-related care continues to escalate both economically and socially. In response, this article introduces Computational Thinking (CT) as a novel, non-pharmacological framework to support cognitive organization in older adults experiencing cognitive frailty. Though CT has gained traction in fields like PK-16 education, including special education, for enhancing executive function and problem-solving, it has not yet been applied to geriatric- or memory-care contexts. This perspective proposes that CT’s core components (i.e., decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking) may align with residual cognitive strengths in mild-to-moderate dementia, offering a strengths-based, …

Green Infrastructure Features And Benefits Communicated By Programs Targeting Residents In The Greater Toronto Area, Nya Lazarus-Munnick, Tenley M. Conway Jul 2025

Green Infrastructure Features And Benefits Communicated By Programs Targeting Residents In The Greater Toronto Area, Nya Lazarus-Munnick, Tenley M. Conway

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Municipalities are increasingly adopting green infrastructure (GI) as a nature-based solution to address stormwater management, climate adaptation, and other urban environmental challenges. One of the strengths of GI is its multifunctionality, which can provide a range of social, economic and environmental benefits. For GI to reach its full potential, widespread implementation throughout a landscape is needed. As a result, GI strategies often rely on various actors, including residents, who can implement GI on their own properties and contribute to the scaling up of GI across a landscape. GI implementation that depends on residents, however, has many challenges pertaining to their …
