From Affordance To Passive Flow: Unveiling The Mechanisms Behind Young Adults' Unplanned Use Of Short Video Platforms, Shishi Wu Jul 2025

From Affordance To Passive Flow: Unveiling The Mechanisms Behind Young Adults' Unplanned Use Of Short Video Platforms, Shishi Wu

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Unplanned usage of short video platforms has become a widespread behavioral pattern, especially among young users who often spend more time on these platforms than they intend to. This phenomenon cannot be fully explained by addiction or self-control failure. This study introduces the construct of Passive Flow, a non-volitional immersion state shaped by platform design. Passive Flow includes three experiential features: users engage without clear goals, gradually lose self-awareness, and experience time distortion. These states are not initiated by deliberate choice but are triggered by algorithmic and interface-level features. To examine this mechanism, the study adopts a two-phase design. The …

Data-Driven Approach To Dynamic Resting State Functional Connectivity In Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: An Enigma-Pgc Ptsd Study, Jacklynn M. Fitzgerald Jul 2025

Data-Driven Approach To Dynamic Resting State Functional Connectivity In Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: An Enigma-Pgc Ptsd Study, Jacklynn M. Fitzgerald

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been associated with aberrations in brain networks in the absence of a given cognitive demand or task, called resting-state networks. Prior work has focused on disruption in the static functional connectivity (FC) among specific regions constrained by a priori hypotheses. However, dynamic FC, an approach that examines brain network characteristics over time, may provide a more sensitive measure to understand the network properties underlying dysfunction in PTSD. Further, using a data-driven analytic approach may reveal the contribution of other larger network disturbances beyond those revealed by hypothesis-driven …

Health Patterns Of Dementia Caregivers With Chronic Pain: Latent Profile Analysis Of The Promis-29 Measure, Shelbie G. Turner, Dakota D. Witzel, Shana Garza, Karl Pillemer, M Carrington Reid Jul 2025

Health Patterns Of Dementia Caregivers With Chronic Pain: Latent Profile Analysis Of The Promis-29 Measure, Shelbie G. Turner, Dakota D. Witzel, Shana Garza, Karl Pillemer, M Carrington Reid

Human Genetics Publications

We identified patterns of health and functioning in a national sample of dementia family caregivers experiencing chronic pain (N = 273). Utilizing latent profile analysis of the 29-item Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS-29), we identified three discrete groups: an average group (48%), a low health challenges group (30%), and a high health challenges group (22%). Women were more likely to be in the high (vs. low) health challenges group. There are discrete health patterns of caregivers with chronic pain, with over 20% reporting comorbid poor health and functioning that may negatively affect caregiving quality. Screening caregivers for high …

Analyzing National War Propaganda Through Comparison Of Diverse Case Studies, Ike Sugitani Jul 2025

Analyzing National War Propaganda Through Comparison Of Diverse Case Studies, Ike Sugitani

Dissertations and Theses

In the build-up to war, national governments utilize propaganda to gather public support for the war effort. In some instances, propaganda campaigns are conducted but war does not occur. This begs the question as to why war follows propaganda campaigns in some cases, but not in others. I argue that propaganda efforts that lead to war can be generally characterized through three major strategies based on a patriotic participatory social structure, a claim to moral authority, and the blending of individual concepts of the state, government and nation. In this study, I analyze the major historical case studies of the …

Transnational Politics Of Cambodian American Ethnic Organizations: Strategies, Motivations, And Impacts, Simin Tan, Wen Chen Jul 2025

Transnational Politics Of Cambodian American Ethnic Organizations: Strategies, Motivations, And Impacts, Simin Tan, Wen Chen

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Since several large-scale migrations to the U.S. in the 1970s, Cambodian Americans have established a number of ethnic organizations aimed at intervening in the political landscape of their homeland. These organizations span from subversive groups seeking to overthrow the Cambodian government through armed insurgency to reformist groups advocating for human rights improvements and peaceful political transformation. The refugee experiences of first-generation Cambodian Americans have served as a key motivator for their involvement in transnational politics, while the degree of social integration shapes the extent to which different generational cohorts engage in these political activities. In addition, both the Cambodian government’s …

Modeling The Dynamics Of User Adoption And Abandonment For A Single Product, Uyen Nguyen Jul 2025

Modeling The Dynamics Of User Adoption And Abandonment For A Single Product, Uyen Nguyen

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

We introduce a compartmental differential equation model to study the dynamics of user adoption and abandonment for a single product. The model integrates two forms of abandonment: infectious, driven by user interactions, and non-infectious, prompted by external influences. Notably, the infectious abandonment coefficient varies linearly with the number of previous users. We investigate the existence of equilibria of the model and derive the threshold quantity ℛ0. The user-free equilibrium is always present, and its stability is analyzed under the condition ℛ0 < 1. Moreover, a user-prevailing equilibrium does not exist when ℛ0 ≤ 1, but at least one user-prevailing equilibrium is guaranteed when ℛ0 > 1. We further characterize conditions for multiple equilibria and various bifurcations, including saddle-node, 𝑆-shaped, and Hopf bifurcations, and formulate …

Equality Or Equity?: Weighing Prima Facie Cases In Reverse Discrimination Claims, Emerson Lawrence Allen Jul 2025

Equality Or Equity?: Weighing Prima Facie Cases In Reverse Discrimination Claims, Emerson Lawrence Allen

Helms School of Government Undergraduate Law Review

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects against employment discrimination. In suits based on this protection, the plaintiff must typically be able to satisfy the four-prong McDonnell Douglas test in order to make a prima facie case and avoid summary judgment in favor of the defendant. Although Title VII fully protects all plaintiffs, the first prong of this test historically requires the plaintiff to show membership in a minority group. The United States Courts of Appeals are, however, split on what standard to require in reverse discrimination cases. There are currently four approaches: one requiring the plaintiff …

Multiclass Cyberbullying Detection Using Advanced Neural Network Architectures: A Comparative Study Amidst The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mahyar Alinejad

Data Science and Data Mining

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the digital communication landscape has seen an unprecedented rise in cyberbullying incidents. Addressing this critical issue, our study develops and evaluates a novel multiclass cyberbullying detection framework employing several advanced neural network architectures—namely Neural Networks (NN), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU). Utilizing a balanced dataset created through Dynamic Query Expansion, this research benchmarks the performance of these models in accurately classifying cyberbullying according to specific victim attributes such as age, ethnicity, gender, and religion. Our results demonstrate that LSTM and GRU models, in particular, exhibit superior performance …

Challenging The Universality Of Poplack’S Syntactic Constraints: Insights From Arabic-English Code-Switching Among Saudi Arabian Women, Sharifa Bahri Jul 2025

Challenging The Universality Of Poplack’S Syntactic Constraints: Insights From Arabic-English Code-Switching Among Saudi Arabian Women, Sharifa Bahri

Linguistics ETDs

This study investigates the applicability of Poplack's (1980) syntactic constraints, the free morpheme constraint and the equivalence constraint, to Arabic-English code-switching among Saudi Arabian women. Based on 886 intra-sentential code-switching utterances drawn from naturalistic podcast speech, the analysis reveals substantial violations of both constraints: 306 utterances (34.5%) violated the free morpheme constraint, and 601 utterances (67.8%) violated the equivalence constraint, occurring across a wide range of syntactic categories. While violations of the free morpheme constraint were exclusively unidirectional, involving Arabic bound morphemes attached to English free morphemes, equivalence constraint violations were bidirectional, though predominantly shaped by Arabic grammar. Crucially, many …

Emotional Metaphors In Mandarin And English: Fear And Surprise, Jing Yang Jul 2025

Emotional Metaphors In Mandarin And English: Fear And Surprise, Jing Yang

Linguistics ETDs

This paper explores the relationship between emotion and experience from a cognitive perspective to fulfill two purposes. First, it seeks to identify the commonalities and differences in emotional metaphors across vastly different languages and the reasons behind these variations. Second, it aims to contribute to typological research in emotion studies beyond established areas such as color, time, and space using innovative approaches. Specifically, this study focuses on fear and surprise to categorize their source domains using lexical and corpus-based methods. Examples were collected from constructions and the corpus, and patterns of FEAR and SURPRISE metaphors in Mandarin were compared with …

Citizen Science Helps Monitor Urban Biodiversity: An Interactive, Data-Driven, And Open-Source Perspective, Katie Slack

Geography ETDs

Story maps, a powerful tool for communicating environmental narratives, are often commercial and lack many interactive functions. We integrate a data-driven and interactive geovisualization within an open-source story map created from high-attribute citizen science datasets. This story map creates a backend programming infrastructure for accessible, open-source science communication tools. Our story map intuitively communicates the findings from our web map application (app) portion of the story map to the public and helps reveal findings from the iNaturalist datasets. Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States is a demonstrative case study, but our tools can be flexibly adapted to other cities. Geovisualizations revealed …

Economic Stress And Child Outcomes: The Family Stress Model Among Asian American Families During Covid-19, Annie Fanta, Sei Eun Kim, Cindy J. Huang, William Tsai, Cindy Y. Huang

Department of Family Science and Human Development Scholarship and Creative Works

Limited research has examined the impact of financial stress on families since the onset of COVID-19, specifically among Asian American (AA) parents. Informed by the Family Stress Model, this study examined the short-term longitudinal links between economic stress, parental psychological distress (i.e., anxiety and depression symptoms), positive parenting behaviors, and child outcomes three months later (i.e., child internalizing and externalizing problems). Results indicated that Time 1 (T1) parental economic stress was directly and positively associated with positive parenting behaviors at T1 and child internalizing problems at Time 2 (T2). Parental psychological distress at T1 was directly and negatively associated with …

Introduction

The marginalization of intersecting racial, gender, and rural identities compounds the structural vulnerabilities (e.g., discrimination, stigma, health disparities) experienced by Black women in South Carolina’s rural areas. Discriminatory experiences can deteriorate mental health; however, resilience can potentially reduce the ill effects of discrimination by decreasing associated psychological distress. This study examines the mediating role of resilience in the association between discrimination and psychological distress among rural, Black women in South Carolina in the post-pandemic era.

Methods

Black women (n = 300, mean age = 48.6) living in rural South Carolina were recruited from January to February 2024 using …
