Of Photographs, Souvenirs, And Ticket Stubs: When Do Consumers Desire Mementos During An Experience?, Charlene Chu, Suzanne B. Shu
Business Faculty Articles and Research
Consumers often desire mementos of their experiential consumption, as reflected in common behaviors such as taking photos during a special event, purchasing souvenirs while on vacation, or keeping ticket stubs from a concert, but when do consumers desire mementos during an experience? This research examines the timing of the desire for mementos during an experience, and the conditions and motivations that prompt those memento timing decisions. We propose that the approaching end of an experience increases feelings of sadness and thus the desire for mementos at that time. However, for experiences that are easily repeatable, the approaching end of an …

Staff Education To Pediatric Healthcare Providers On How To Prevent Unintentional Childhood Injuries., Peter Cleveland Collins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This staff education quality improvement Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was focused on teaching pediatric healthcare providers how to provide education during wellness visits to prevent unintentional childhood injury. The practice problem at the clinic was that pediatric providers lacked knowledge about injury prevention. A literature review showed that unintentional childhood injuries are the leading cause of death in this population. The practice-focused question determined was to determine if, after educating providers, they have improved knowledge and intent to educate their patients. I used the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation (ADDIE) model to guide this project. The participants …

Conceptions of autism and neurodiversity vary widely, with differing views on how they are portrayed in contemporary culture. Although autism scholars have long advocated for greater involvement of autistic individuals in knowledge creation, meaningful co-production between autistic stakeholders, researchers, and the broader community remains limited. To explore differences in autism knowledge between autistic and non-autistic people, we used a qualitative method called visual elicitation. We invited the public to upload an image they felt represented autism and explain their choice. Through thematic analysis of these images and their accompanying descriptions, we identified three key themes highlighting how autism is currently …

Patterns Of Resilience, Patterns Of Tragedy: Perspectives From Inside And Outside To Theorize Beneficial Interventions Serving Urban African American Youth Struggling With Community Violence, Katherine Tyson Mccrea, Kevin Miller, Amzie Moore, Heather L. Watson
Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
Community violence, defined as violence perpetrated in community as opposed to home settings, is a salient social problem, causing terror and tragedy, especially in urban, low-income communities of color. Interventions supporting youth struggling with community violence have been insufficiently studied and theorized, especially from strengths-focused, culturally relevant standpoints in the context of contemporary social policies. This paper outlines psychodynamic theoretical models for services that have been developed via participatory research and provided for 19 years for over 1000 youth. Then, to understand how youth make use of the programs from an “inside” perspective, four intensive case examples are described. From …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the accumulation of misfolded proteins in the brain. Recently, the impact of blood components in the progression of this disease has come to attention. This study investigates the effects of infusing blood from young and old wild-type mice into transgenic mice that model AD brain amyloidosis. Impaired memory and Aβ accumulation were observed in mice infused with blood from old donors. A proteomic analysis in the brain of these mice identified alterations in components related to synaptogenesis and the endocannabinoid system. The α2δ2 protein, associated with neuronal calcium regulation, was validated …

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable connective disorder with clinical manifestations including bone fragility and short stature. Previous research identified psychosocial themes related to mental health among children with OI and their caregivers, such as independence, social isolation, depression, and anxiety. Several studies have also examined clinicians of individuals with OI for their perspectives on mental health among their patients. However, no known studies have compared psychosocial themes among all three participant groups concurrently. This qualitative study examined mood and anxiety, along with risk and protective factors, from perspectives of youths, parents, and clinicians. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, which were …

Investigating The Effects Of Cognitive Loads On Serial Dependence And Metacognition In Visual Working Memory, Wing Sum Chiu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Humans tend to perceive the physical world based on the input from the recent past, a phenomenon known as serial dependence. Serial dependence typically results in an attractive bias toward prior stimuli to maintain perceptual stability. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether cognitive loads can modulate serial dependence and metacognitive processes may depend on serial dependence. In this study, we investigate how memory and perceptual loads affect serial dependence, memory precision, and metacognition in visual working memory.
In Experiment 1, we manipulated memory load by varying set sizes. During each trial, 1, 3 or 6 Gabor patches (as a between-subjects factor) …

There is a nursing shortage in the United States, with worsening projections over the next ten years. Reasons for the shortage are multifactorial and include both individual and institutional causes. A majority of nurses express feelings of stress, fatigue, and frustration which contribute to burnout and leaving the profession, worsening an already pressing problem. Nursing students are entering a complex healthcare field that they may be unprepared for. They experience stressors in school that may even prevent them from completing school and entering the profession. Seeing the need to address this issue while students are in the throes of their …

In 2015, the American Nurses Association called upon nursing faculty to develop and create workplace violence prevention programs. In response to the ANA, our innovative educational experiences show how the implementation of scaffolded experiences in self-defense, de-escalation, and leadership within an accelerated nursing program better prepares students for the realities of practice. In healthcare, especially in fast-paced settings, nurses often face challenging situations that require quick decision-making, conflict management, and assertive leadership to maintain safety for all. Workplace violence continues to increase in prevalence in the healthcare setting. Scaffolding—a progressive, structured approach to skill development—enables students to build foundational skills …
