Yi-Xia Distinction And Cultural Identity In The Reception Of Calligraphy In The Northern Dynasties, Xingcheng Zhang Oct 2025

Yi-Xia Distinction And Cultural Identity In The Reception Of Calligraphy In The Northern Dynasties, Xingcheng Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The fluctuating recognition of Northern dynasties' calligraphy within Chinese calligraphic history stems not only from aesthetic considerations but also from complex cultural identity issues, which profoundly reflects the interaction between calligraphy and cultural politics. The Tang dynasty's reverence for Wang Xizhi and the trend toward “southernization” in calligraphic studies initiated the decline of Northern dynasties' calligraphy, while the Song Dynasty's rejection of Wei steles and related Northern styles reflected the orthodoxy of Jin and Tang, based on the Yi-Xia distinction and the divide between civilization and barbarism. Since the mid-to-late Qing dynasty, the transformation of academic thought, the demands of …

Journal of Prison Education Research

Teaching in the prison context is characterized by a high complexity level; it is a multifaced activity influenced by several factors depending on the specific context. We present a preliminary but overall picture of schooling in Italian prisons by considering teachers’ reflections regarding their experiences in teaching mathematics in correctional facilities. To address the gap in the current literature on this issue, we conducted a SWOT analysis on the reflection provided by a group of nine Italian mathematics teachers who teach in different prisons and with different experiences and backgrounds. Their reflection allowed us to identify and describe six theory-driven …

Reimagining Musical Improvisation Through Poetic Inspiration: A Creative Practice Investigation, Sean Foran Oct 2025

Reimagining Musical Improvisation Through Poetic Inspiration: A Creative Practice Investigation, Sean Foran

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

This presentation explores creative practice as research through an innovative approach to musical improvisation that challenges traditional boundaries between music and literature. Working with experienced improvising musicians, this study investigates how poetic texts serve as catalysts for new creative processes and musical outcomes.

The methodology involved musicians responding improvisationally to recorded poetry narrations, followed by reflective discussion and re-improvisation, extending Hannan's concept of 'comprovisation' while maintaining complete musical agency. Significantly, the final creative works present only the improvised music, requiring audiences to read poems independently and construct their own text-music relationships.

This approach differs from established music-poetry collaborations by positioning …

The Horror And The Passion: The Christian/Secular Paradigm In The Twentieth-Century Southern Gothic, Matthew Ryan Pike

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The goal of this dissertation is to provide a foundational definition of the southern gothic literary genre. In this analysis, I argue that the core of the southern gothic is a Christian/secular paradigm and that all of the conflict within these narratives is principally grounded in this dichotomy. Not only does this framework provide the best interpretive lens to understand the genre, but it ameliorates the cloud of confusion in the critical scholarship, wherein a wide and fluid array of propositions are advanced on what essentially comprises the southern gothic. I execute this via an interdisciplinary strategy, adopting scholarship and …
