Dictators And Lying Dictators: An Experimental Investigation Of Preference Based-Group Biases In Chinese And American Interactions, Aaron S. Berman, Saika Cer Askin, Shapeng Jiang, David Porter, Jason Shachat

ESI Working Papers

This study examines group-conditional generosity and behavior using students from Chapman University in the United States and Wuhan University in China. Participants make allocation decisions in either a standard Dictator Game (DG) or a Lying Dictator Game (LDG), where a privately reported die roll determines the allocation. We vary whether participants interact with members of their own or the other university community. The LDG game, through the possibility of plausible deniability, allows for the moderation of image concerns that potentially influence DG behavior. We complement these tasks with individual decision benchmarks that exclude the Receiver to control for group differences …

The Relationship Between Theory Of Planned Behavior Constructs And Small Business Owners’ Tax Evasion And Avoidance Behaviors, Kenyatta Patton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The U.S. Department of the Treasury incurs substantial costs due to a tax gap, and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service has limited capacity to implement non-enforcement strategies without a deeper understanding of the behavioral drivers of tax non-compliance. Grounded in the theory of planned behavior, the purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to explore the relationships between small business owners’ attitudes toward taxation, social norms, perceived behavioral control, and tax compliance behaviors. The participants comprised 121 small business owners in the Atlanta, Georgia, metropolitan area. They completed a combined survey consisting of the ethics of tax evasion survey instrument …

Advancing Road Safety Through Data Integration, Location Accuracy, And Risk-Based Route Optimization, Lars Skaug

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This dissertation advances transportation safety through three interconnected contributions that address fundamental challenges in crash data analysis and application. First, we present a comprehensive survey of road crash analysis methodologies, tracing the evolution from traditional statistical approaches to modern machine learning techniques while identifying critical gaps between research sophistication and practical implementation. This survey reveals that while methodological advances have been substantial, ongoing data quality issues, particularly in location accuracy and completeness, limit the effectiveness of even the most sophisticated analytical approaches.

Building on these findings, we develop a novel system to validate and correct crash location data using multi-modal …

Feasibility And Utility Of Ai-Triggered Prompts For Efficiently Capturing When And Why People Experience Stress In Natural Environments, Sameer Neupane Nov 2025

Feasibility And Utility Of Ai-Triggered Prompts For Efficiently Capturing When And Why People Experience Stress In Natural Environments, Sameer Neupane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Advances in wearables and AI enable real-time stress detection for JITAI, yet long-term stress reduction remains difficult because interventions must align with the underlying stressors. Traditional methods like annual or end-of-day surveys miss many stressors due to recall bias or participant burden. AI-triggered prompts offer a timely and low-burden alternative for capturing real-world stressors as they occur. To demonstrate the feasibility of using AI-triggered prompts for real-time stressor capture, we conducted the MOODS Study, a 100-day field study with 122 participants wearing smartwatches equipped with a pre-trained stress model. When physiological stress events ended, participants were prompted to log their …

Let It Flow: Walking-With Educators In Affective School Environments, Alyssa Dominique Nucaro Nov 2025

Let It Flow: Walking-With Educators In Affective School Environments, Alyssa Dominique Nucaro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation explores the intertwined relationships between K–5 educators and the external environments of their schools. Drawing on post-qualitative inquiry, the study rejects traditional linear methodologies in favor of walking-with, a practice of movement, noticing, and attunement that foregrounds affective intensities and material encounters. Through walking-with, artifact-based reflections, and journaling, this research maps how teachers experience, interpret, and are shaped by the spaces that surround their schools. The dissertation presents vignettes and poetic fragments as affective offerings that illuminate how space, pedagogy, and community intermingle. These moments reveal tensions and possibilities around safety, visibility, infrastructure, play, and cultural connection, while …

The Effects Of Antecedent Interventions To Decrease Recyclable Paper In Trash Bins In Kindergarten Classrooms, Matthew Alan Davidson Nov 2025

The Effects Of Antecedent Interventions To Decrease Recyclable Paper In Trash Bins In Kindergarten Classrooms, Matthew Alan Davidson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In 2018, paper and paperboard accounted for 23% of the municipal solid waste generated and 67% of recycled materials (EPA, 2020). Numerous studies have demonstrated the positive effects of antecedent interventions on increasing recycling rates across various settings. However, public schools are often overlooked as sources of recyclable paper. Paper is a commonly discarded item in classrooms and a relatively easy item to teach discrimination in disposal, due to similar features of examples (printer paper, paper bags, paper cuttings) and non-examples (paper towels, plates, napkins, food wrappers). The results of two studies are reported in this paper. Both studies utilized …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation I explore the social dimensions of trauma and resilience among Syrian refugees resettled in the United States. Drawing on in-depth interviews and focus group data collected at a resettlement center in Tampa, Florida, I aim to understand how displacement reshapes identity, disrupts traditional gender roles, changes social bonds, and how healing occurs within one’s community. I frame my work within Social Identity Theory, Identity Theory, and the sociology of trauma. My research highlights the gendered expressions of trauma, the transformation of masculinity under forced migration, and the role of spirituality in community healing.

This project includes three …

The Historical Shift On Depression: Psychoanalysis To Neuroscience, Melina Kehtar-Navaz Nov 2025

The Historical Shift On Depression: Psychoanalysis To Neuroscience, Melina Kehtar-Navaz

The Bear Counseling Collective

Depression, a condition that affects millions of people worldwide, has been an important subject for the collaboration between psychologists, medical doctors, and beyond. Over the past century, our understanding of depression has undergone a transformation from theory-driven insights of psychoanalysis to the biological and brain-based medical and cognitive models that currently dominate research in the field. In the early 20th century, psychoanalysts like Sigmund Freud proposed an original definition and cause for depression, including components of unconscious conflicts. Today, with advancements in neuroscience and biological psychiatry, depression is a disorder of the brain that is affected by multiple components of …

Theoretical Exploration: Feederism And Precarious Manhood, Schneebeck

The Bear Counseling Collective

The internet provides a peek into the lives of niche communities that one might not otherwise encounter in daily life. Stumbling into a unique subculture can intrigue, befuddle, or even disturb the outside viewer. The traditional physical barriers between sexual fetishes and the outside world are diminished with a few clicks of the keyboard. One sexual fetish gaining internet traction, even outside of the explicitly adult online spaces, is that of feederism. Feederism’s growing infamy comes from its odd and extreme departure from what is considered “normal” – an overt sexualization of force feeding a partner with intent of weight …

Breaking The Cycle: Addressing The Stigma Of Non-Offending Individuals To Reduce The Risk Of Child Sexual Abuse, Olinda Moro López Nov 2025

Breaking The Cycle: Addressing The Stigma Of Non-Offending Individuals To Reduce The Risk Of Child Sexual Abuse, Olinda Moro López

The Bear Counseling Collective

Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) is a significant public health issue worldwide. Estimates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that 25% of girls and 5% of boys have experienced sexual abuse (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024). However, the CDC’s statistics only reflect criminal convictions of CSA cases. Notably, a 2011 meta-analysis comparing official CSA data from 217 studies with approximately 10 million self-reported samples revealed that prevalence rates could be as much as 30 times higher than official statistics suggest (Beier et al., 2024; Stoltenborgh et al., 2011). This discrepancy highlights significant under-detection and …

Theoretical Review: Finding The Light In Logotherapy, Lexi Lucas Moore Nov 2025

Theoretical Review: Finding The Light In Logotherapy, Lexi Lucas Moore

The Bear Counseling Collective

As humans, we face many forms of fire: the singe of a broken relationship, the smolder of death, and even the blaze of abuse. However, we endure the burn, and eventually, our resilience illuminates into hope. Viktor E. Frankl (1946) once said, “What is to give light must endure burning.” This tumultuous journey of rising from the ashes was familiar to Viktor, as it was a matter of his survival during his experience of the Holocaust. While imprisoned in concentration camps, Viktor developed logotherapy as a theoretical lens to promote freedom. With four universal tenants, the theory is an act …

Psychological Service Clinic: An Interview With Dr. Johnson, Leah K. Skelton

The Bear Counseling Collective

With the long wait list and high demand for mental health services, many people may have trouble finding affordable mental health services in the northern Colorado area. As director of the psychological services clinic, Dr. Johnson helped shed light on a service available in the Greeley community that many may not be aware of through the University of Northern Colorado’s Psychological Services Clinic (PSC). In an effort to help highlight this service, I sat down with Dr. Johnson to talk with him about what the PSC has to offer people in the community and the process of obtaining services.

Loneliness And The Experience Of Addiction And Recovery In Older Adults, Chalan Carpenter Nov 2025

Loneliness And The Experience Of Addiction And Recovery In Older Adults, Chalan Carpenter

The Bear Counseling Collective

Physical, emotional, and cognitive age-related changes are challenging processes for an individual to manage as they age. The aging population has higher rates of social isolation and feelings of loneliness (Haroutunian, 2016). While loneliness can be seen as an emotional experience, it also can be viewed as an age-related change. As individuals age, they will typically experience a decrease in relationships and social interaction. The experience of loneliness or isolation is a negative emotional experience which can affect a person’s ability to cope with stress and age-related changes, and to achieve developmental milestones. Through interviews with participants recovering from alcohol …

A Detestable Nation Of Orcs: Echoes Of Eurasian Nomads In Early Fantasy And The Literary Ecosystem Behind Them, Axel Hansen

Journal of Tolkien Research

It is well known that Orcs and Easterlings in J.R.R. Tolkien's works share features with Eurasian nomadic peoples such as Huns and Mongols. The same is true for Tolkien's literary predecessor William Morris' Dusky Men in The Roots of the Mountains. This article will provide an examination of these features from a historical viewpoint, on how interactions with and subsequent records about various steppe nomads in European history can be tied to villains in early modern Fantasy literature. It will then present a short review of how a network of historic accounts, academic theories and pop cultural works – …

Learning and Satisfaction

Motivation, especially in the world of psychology, is quite the broad and overarching term that relates to various aspects of life. Whether it be motivation in the workplace, classroom, sports, or relationships, our intrinsic and extrinsic motivations drive us to do our best on what we set forth to accomplish. Although there is extensive research on methods of learning in correlation to motivation as well as levels of satisfaction impacting these levels, there has yet to be much exploration into the impact an emotional component or personal connection may have on these factors. The purpose of this …

Advancing Children's Mental Health In Nevada, Kelliann Beavers, Christopher Kearney

Lincy Institute Events

Nevada ranks 51st nationally in youth mental health access and services, underscoring persistent shortages and disparities across the state. Nearly one in four youths aged 12–17 (23.5%) experienced a major depressive episode in the past year, and 73% did not receive treatment. Approximately 34,000 Nevada youths have reported suicidal thoughts—an urgent call for prevention and coordinated support.

During the 2024–2025 school year, 31.3% of Clark County School District students were chronically absent (missing 10% or more of school days), a challenge closely linked to mental health struggles and socioeconomic barriers.

This community forum provided an opportunity to generate dialogue and …

Witnessing A Wounded World: A Theology Of Ecological Trauma, Timothy A. Middleton Nov 2025

Witnessing A Wounded World: A Theology Of Ecological Trauma, Timothy A. Middleton

Theology

A crucial intervention at the intersection of ecotheology and trauma theology

We are in the midst of a global ecological crisis. At times, the scale of the suffering involved can be hard to fully comprehend. The whole planetary ecosystem feels out of kilter. Meanwhile, trauma theorists, and society at large, have become increasingly aware of the incidence of trauma in a growing variety of contexts. In Witnessing a Wounded World, Timothy Middleton asks what might be gained by viewing ecological suffering through the lens of trauma.

By bringing concepts and methodologies from trauma theology to bear on questions that …

Improving Empathy And Reducing Stigmatization In Pre-Clinical Physician Assistant Students Towards Patient Taking Opioids For Chronic Pain: The Feasibility Of A Perspective-Taking Peer Role-Play Intervention, Barbie Ann Seton Stephen Nov 2025

Improving Empathy And Reducing Stigmatization In Pre-Clinical Physician Assistant Students Towards Patient Taking Opioids For Chronic Pain: The Feasibility Of A Perspective-Taking Peer Role-Play Intervention, Barbie Ann Seton Stephen

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Background: Empathy has been identified as a crucial skill for all healthcare providers who treat patients with chronic pain. It has been directly linked to higher patient satisfaction and improved health outcomes. It has also been linked to reduced burnout, fewer medical errors, and improved job satisfaction among healthcare providers. Despite the many interventions that have been developed to promote empathy, the decline of empathy in healthcare providers and trainees continues to be of great concern, especially in pain management and opioid prescribing, thus affecting the quality of care given to these patients. In physician assistant students, this decline has …

Breaking The Cycle: A Teacher And Mother’S Examination Of Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support, Jessica Hinton Nov 2025

Breaking The Cycle: A Teacher And Mother’S Examination Of Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support, Jessica Hinton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The 2004 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) included Response to Intervention (RTI) as an option for determining eligibility for learning disabilities. However, there is no required structure to follow for RTI implementation. This lack of guidance leads to a lack of clarity in implementation at district and site levels. Many states use RTI as the primary indicator of whether a student needs special education services for a learning disability. RTI is a model for delivery of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). The terms RTI and MTSS are often used interchangeably. For clarity, I use MTSS-RTI to …

The Effects Of Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury On Sexual Criminal Offense, Brooke Leslie Luckhardt

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Traumatic brain injury during childhood and adolescence is a significant social problem and is particularly damaging to long term cognitive and mental health. Major growth and maturation occur within the brain from age 6 months to 25 years and any interruption to this process can be detrimental to long term cognitive and emotional adjustment. Research has shown that pediatric traumatic brain injury can cause aggression, agitation, mood disorder, and socially inappropriate behavior. However, the study of how sustaining a traumatic brain injury during the time of pediatric development could potentially affect future sexually inappropriate behavior has not been explored. This …

The Predictive Power Of Social Engagement On Psychological Outcomes Among College Students, Allison J. Gamble

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Worsening mental health among college students post-COVID is a growing national health crisis. Grounded in Cacioppo’s evolutionary theory of loneliness and Feeney and Collins’ thriving through relationships theoretical perspectives, the purpose of this study was to explore the degree to which social interaction and social support predicted psychological outcomes among undergraduate students. Survey responses from over 74,000 undergraduate students who completed the ACHA-NCHA survey for Fall 2019, 2021, and 2022 were analyzed. The surveys included the Kessler 6 screening for non-specific mental illness, the Diener flourishing scale, and questions to assess the number of hours spent in categorically-sorted social situations …
