Force And Fallout: Experimental Evidence From A National Test Of The Community Expectations Standard, Christopher J. Marier, Conor Goodwin
Force And Fallout: Experimental Evidence From A National Test Of The Community Expectations Standard, Christopher J. Marier, Conor Goodwin
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
A persistent ``reasonableness divide'' exists between the legal standards governing police use of force and the public’s expectations, producing ``lawful but awful'' uses of force. This study empirically tests the ``Community Expectations Standard'' (CES), a model that identifies five criteria the public uses to evaluate force: underlying governmental interest, avoidability, officer motivation, subject resistance, and the presence of a ``highly dangerous'' environment. Using a factorial survey experiment with a national sample of nearly 2,000 U.S. adults, we analyzed responses to a hypothetical vignette depicting non-lethal force using t-tests and Bayesian linear regression models. The results show that underlying governmental interest …
The Communication Of Emotion In College Student Affairs: An Analysis On Emotional Labor In Residence Life, Hannah Christensen
The Communication Of Emotion In College Student Affairs: An Analysis On Emotional Labor In Residence Life, Hannah Christensen
SPARK Symposium Presentations
Residence Directors (RDs) and other Student Affairs Professionals (SAPs) work in roles defined by constant interaction, crisis response, and emotional engagement. Residence Life is often one of the first professional experiences in student affairs, making it a highly formative environment. In my research, every professional interviewed had worked in Residence Life at some point, shaping how they understand communication, emotion, and expectations in the field.
What makes this work especially unique is that many professionals live where they work, respond to crises at all hours, and support students through both challenges and celebrations. As a result, they are frequently required …

The intervention includes launching a SBL course and …
Quality Improvement Project Assessment Of Emergency Department Staff Knowledge On Use Of Emergency Severity Index In A Critical Access Hospital: Implementation Of Emergency Department-Based Education Program., Amanda Taylor
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
In rural emergency departments, accurate triage is vital to ensuring patient safety and maximizing limited resources. This quality improvement project aimed to strengthen triage practices by enhancing nurses’ understanding and confidence in using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI), a standardized tool for assessing patient acuity. Ten registered nurses at a seven-bed critical access hospital participated in a structured educational program, guided by Lewin’s Change Theory and Benner’s Novice to Expert Theory. The intervention included hands-on training, real-world scenarios, and self-assessment surveys. After the program, nurses showed significant gains in both knowledge (mean scores rose from 70.0 to 88.9, p < .001) and confidence (from 13.5 to 23.2 out of 25). While the small sample size and short timeline were limitations, the results highlight the value of ongoing education in improving triage accuracy and patient care. This project offers a practical model for rural hospitals seeking to enhance emergency nursing practice and promote consistent, evidence-based decision-making.

The Ecological Self In Nurse Educators: A Concept Analysis From A Humanizing Lens, Vhothusa Edward Matahela
Biennial Convention (CONV)
The 21st-century climate crisis necessitates a rethinking of the values and beliefs that have escalated environmental degradation (Gardiner, 2011). This presentation explores the concept of the Ecological Self, emphasizing the deep interconnection between individuals and their environment, as a framework for addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation (Bragg, 1996). Although the Ecological Self is highly relevant, its application within nursing education remains underexplored. Nurse educators, who play a crucial role in shaping future professionals, can influence climate change initiatives through this lens.
This presentation aims to clarify the concept of the Ecological Self in nurse educators by examining its attributes, …

Quality Improvement Project: Creation Of An Ebp Healthy Lifestyle Program: An Evidence-Based Development Program, Devanee Ray
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Nursing education is the foundation of healthcare itself. However, several things influence nursing students’ academic success. A lack of overall health habits is a significant contributor. Generally, this lack is due to a lack of education. The goal of this quality improvement Doctor of Nurse Practice (DNP) project was to develop an educational program that addresses the identified knowledge gaps. The aim was to develop the program to promote student success and pilot-test the program to determine its impact among masters-level nursing faculty. Using Lewin’s Change Theory and Orem’s theory of self-care, the educational program was piloted over a seven-week …

The Agentic Database And Military Command: A Perspective On Autonomous C2 Systems, Elise Annett, James Giordano
The Agentic Database And Military Command: A Perspective On Autonomous C2 Systems, Elise Annett, James Giordano
Strategic Insights
This commentary explores how emerging autonomous command and control (C2) systems, powered by advanced machine learning and data-driven decision engines, are transforming military decision processes. The authors introduce the concept of an “agentic database,” a framework in which autonomous systems actively sense, assess, and act upon dynamic operational data to support or augment human command decisions. While these systems offer potential benefits in speed, situational awareness, and decision quality, they also raise critical questions about accountability, trust, human oversight, and strategic risk. Meaningful integration of autonomous C2 requires doctrinal clarity, clear ethical guidelines, robust verification, and continuous human-machine collaboration to …

Antenatal depression, also known as prenatal or perinatal depression, is a type of clinical depression that can affect women during pregnancy. It is estimated that approximately 10-20% of pregnant women experience antenatal depression (Antenatal Maternal Health, n.d.). Antenatal depression has been linked to higher rates of postpartum depression. Additionally, antenatal depression has been associated with a reduced gestational age at the time of delivery, a lower APGAR score at 1 and 5 min, and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit. APGAR scoring is used to assess a newborn’s health immediately following birth.

The “I’M Too Much, Yet Never Enough” Paradox: A Critical Approach To Discourses Of Afro-Latinidad Among Second-Generation-Immigrant Women In South Florida, Eleni Victoria Webster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This study critically examines discourse and the ways it shapes identities and community belonging for self-identifying Afro-Latina, second-generation-immigrant women in South Florida. This qualitative research uses an intercultural communication framework to analyze interviews and collected poems. Informed by grounded theory and a Black feminist critical approach rooted in the intersectionality theory, the data is analyzed through comparative thematic and metaphorical rhetorical analyses. When discussing the discourses related to the development of ethno-racial identities for Afro-Latinas, certain communicative patterns of self-discovering, self-defining, and self-envisioning emerged. With regard to community belonging, three metaphorical discourses arose: not-enoughness, in-betweenness, and un-humanness. The internalization of …
Trajectory Analysis Incorporating Non-Response Weights Via A Non-Parametric Feature-Based Approach And A Bayesian Finite Mixture Model Approach, Samia Sultana
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
While conducting longitudinal population-based research, the most insight concerning a phenomenon can be achieved by analyzing the changing patterns of outcomes over time, rather than depending on overall measures that may mask significant within- and between-individual variation. Trajectory analyses address this need by grouping individuals into sub-populations with similar temporal patterns. In population surveys, dropout and wave non-response can distort estimated trajectories and their prevalence. Non-response weights, defined as the inverse probabilities of response, adjust the representation of under-represented individuals and mitigate the impact of over-represented ones, so restoring the population representativeness of the resultant patterns. Nonetheless, conventional trajectory analysis …
