“Data governance” is an empty term, like a Rorschach inkblot just waiting to be filled with meaning. Tech companies take advantage of this ambiguity to craft narratives about their data-governance capabilities to fit their audience and purpose. On one hand, tech companies brag about their data-governance capabilities when it fits their business model (for example, to advertisers) and public image (for example, to their customers). On the other hand, tech companies claim that meaningful data governance is challenging or impossible when accountability is demanded.
In this Article, we argue that tech companies systematically misrepresent or selectively ignore their data-governance capabilities. …

Understanding Motivations And Health Outcomes Of College-Aged Triathletes During Covid-19: A Mixed-Methods Study, Patrick Wilson, Eddie Hill, Justin Haegele, Xihe Zhu
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
A triathlon is a multi-sport event that consists of three simultaneous events: swimming, biking, and running. This sport has experienced significant growth in the past few decades, with colleges and universities now participating. This exploratory mixed-methods study examined the motivations and perceived health benefits of college triathletes during the COVID-19 pandemic, using the Means-Ends of Recreation Scale and the Perceived Health Outcomes of Recreation Scale (N = 29), as well as semi-structured interviews (N = 4). Results indicate no difference in motives or health outcomes between male and female survey respondents. The thematic analysis of open-ended interview questions highlighted lived …

An Insidious Interstice: Understanding Cognition And Language Behaviour Through The Eyes Of Juvenile Justice Professionals, Anne M. Perrotti, Allison T. Chappell, Tancy Vandecar-Burdin
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
Introduction
Despite evidence suggesting language and cognition deficits are prevalent for justice involved youth, little research explores how juvenile justice personnel experience language and cognition behaviours in the youth they serve.
Aims
This qualitative study explored how juvenile justice personnel understand language and cognition skills and deficits in justice involved youth.
Methods
Twenty-two U.S. juvenile justice professionals participated in individual, semi-structured interviews. Questions focused on individual understanding of receptive language, expressive language, social communication, and cognition (i.e., problem-solving, predicting consequences and impulsiveness) in juveniles served. Using a phenomenological lens, transcripts were coded identifying themes and sub-themes of participant responses.

Regular physical activity (PA) has been shown to benefit sleep. However, the effects of PA timing and adherence to the WHO's recommended 60-min moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) guideline on sleep are unclear, especially for children with ADHD who often experience sleep problems. This study examined whether timing of MVPA influenced objectively measured sleep, including sleep latency (SL), sleep efficiency (SE), total sleep time (TST), and wake after sleep onset (WASO), among children with ADHD. This cross-sectional study involved 253 children with ADHD (Mage = 8.60 ± 1.31 years, 81% boys). MVPA timing was categorized as more than 8 h before …

This article discusses the relevance of the Strict Liability theory to banking crimes in the transfer of customer funds involving elements of negligence as well as intent committed by bank managers. Strict liability places responsibility on the perpetrator without the need to prove fault, but rather by establishing a causal relationship between the act and the harm. In the context of civil law, Articles 1365 and 1367 of the Indonesian Civil Code recognize a form of liability resembling this concept through the mechanism of vicarious liability, whereby the bank as employer may be held liable for the unlawful acts of …
An Investigation Into The Mechanisms, Barriers, Degree And Sphere Of Risk Influence In Corporate Security, Nicola Lockhart
An Investigation Into The Mechanisms, Barriers, Degree And Sphere Of Risk Influence In Corporate Security, Nicola Lockhart
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study investigates the sphere of corporate security risk influence within organisations, addressing the conceptual and practical ambiguity surrounding the activity’s capacity to shape organisational decisions, behaviours, and risk priorities. While corporate security’s protective role is widely recognised, its broader organisational risk influence remains under-theorised. The study defines the sphere of risk influence as the range of organisational stakeholders and environments with which the corporate security activity interacts, and within which it may engage, persuade, and mobilise action. This sphere is analytically constituted through the intersection of three dimensions: the mechanisms through which influence is attempted, the barriers that constrain …
The Experience Of Homelessness Among Older Adults In Bhutan - A Narrative Inquiry Study, Phuntsho Om
The Experience Of Homelessness Among Older Adults In Bhutan - A Narrative Inquiry Study, Phuntsho Om
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
A shift in the demographics of homelessness started to occur in the 1900s, with a significant increase in the number of middle-aged or elderly men and women being recognised as a part of the homeless population. The rising urgent global concern of homelessness of older adults necessitates a deeper understanding of the lived experience and holistic well-being of these marginalised adults. This thesis aimed to explore the phenomenon of homelessness of older adults in Bhutan, which is an often neglected topic in both national and international gerontological research.
Employing narrative inquiry within the constructivist approach as articulated by Pino Gravidia …

Understanding Climate Change And Wellbeing Through Bhutan's Pursuit Of Gross National Happiness, Tashi Dorji
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Climate change has evolved into one of the biggest global challenges of the twenty first century reshaping ecological systems and social conditions with wide-ranging implications for human wellbeing. Bhutan offers a distinct context to explore interactions between climate change and wellbeing as it remains guided by its wellbeing-centred development philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH). At the same time, it remains highly vulnerable to climate change despite being the only carbon negative country in the world. Nonetheless, the intersections between climate change and GNH have not been systematically explored.
This research aims to explore the relationship between climate change and …

Emerging From The Cocoon: Strategies To Assist The Classical Violinist Develop Improvisational Fluency In A Range Of Musical Styles, Judith A. Iddison
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This autoethnographic practice-led research project documents the journey of expanding my classical violin practice with the aim of developing improvisational fluency in a range of musical styles. Building upon findings and strategies outlined in my honours thesis, which centred on the artistry of Australian cross-genre violinist Shenzo Gregorio (Shenton Gregory), this doctoral study is underpinned by an iterative cyclic process of critical observation, reflection and analysis and an examination of literature.
Knowledge gained through one-on-one, aural-based, practical violin-improvisation instruction with Gregorio was applied within collaboration with the evolving string ensemble, Sign of Four. Further, combining this tuition and collaboration with …

Impact Of Immediate Restoration On Bone Remodeling In The Esthetic Zone: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Hao-Dong Wang, Xin-Hai Lin, Yi-Wen Wu, Hong-Run Zhou, Tai Zhao Wei, Xi Chen, Yi-Qun Tang, Ya-Qin Zhu, Long Jiang
Journal of Dental Sciences
Background/purpose: Traumatic loss of anterior teeth creates esthetic challenges and often requires immediate rehabilitation. Although immediate implant placement and restoration (IIPR) shortens treatment time, strict primary stability limits its use. A native-crown restoration supported by fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) splints may broaden the indications of immediate restoration, but its effectiveness remains unclear. This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the effects of the novel immediate restoration following IIP on peri-implant bone remodeling in anterior esthetic zone trauma during osseointegration.
Materials and methods: Twenty participants undergoing IIP in the anterior maxilla were randomized into two groups. In the experimental group, immediate restorations …

Journal of Dental Sciences
Background/purpose: The compensatory benefit of removable partial dentures (RPDs) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) depends on the number of natural teeth. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between RPD use and number of natural teeth on HRQoL, measured by EuroQoL 5-Dimension 5-Level (EQ-5D-5L) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).
Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study included 410 older adults. Dental status, including the number of natural teeth and the decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index, and RPD use were assessed. Participants were categorized into three groups (0-9, 10-19, and ≥ 20 natural teeth). HRQoL was measured using the …
Tools Used To Measure Fear Avoidance Behaviour In The Management Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Concussion), Liam Sherwood
Tools Used To Measure Fear Avoidance Behaviour In The Management Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Concussion), Liam Sherwood
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Concussion can present challenges with respect to diagnosis and management. Fear avoidance behaviour and beliefs may be perpetuating factors in the clinical course of concussion. Understanding which patients may adopt such behaviours and beliefs can offer important information to allow tailoring of clinical management and implementing strategies to minimise the risk of progression to persisting post-concussion symptoms.
In this thesis, I:
- systematically reviewed the current measurement tools used to assess fear avoidance behaviours and beliefs associated with concussion;
- explored the experience of clinicians, researchers and people with lived experience of concussion in relation to fear avoidance behaviours;
- …
Heat Misers, Snow Misers, And Cognitive Misers: The 'Nukewarm' Perceptions Of Nuclear Power, Tyler Williams
Heat Misers, Snow Misers, And Cognitive Misers: The 'Nukewarm' Perceptions Of Nuclear Power, Tyler Williams
Dissertations and Theses
Rising energy demand in the United States necessitates alternatives to fossil fuels, yet renewable energy sources alone are insufficient to meet this demand. Nuclear power presents a promising option but faces persistent public hesitancy. This study examines how heuristic-based biases relate to American's risk-benefit perceptions towards nuclear power. Guided by the heuristic-systematic model. Results indicate that competence and affect are related to risk-benefit perceptions, and naturalness shows no relationship with risk perceptions but does correlate with benefit perceptions. Implications highlight the importance of affect-driven communication strategies for nuclear communicators, while also underscoring the need for participatory approaches that foster trust …

Meaningful Work: A Phenomenological Study Of Embedded Writing Peer Mentors, Susan S. Detwiler
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
This phenomenological case study examines the experiences of writing peer mentors who are embedded in a first-year inquiry-based writing seminar. It aims to understand how peer mentors who are engaged in the complex practice of supporting first-year writers in a writing classroom make sense of themselves and writing. At a large R-1 diverse university, I interviewed 6 writing peer mentors 3 times over 1 calendar year. I traced their development from mentees, (first-year writing students), through their three semesters of peer mentoring. They also shared written reflections from their training praxis course (a course for peer mentors focusing on their …

The Effect Of A Functionally Indicated Choice-Based Antecedent Intervention On Academic And Behavioral Outcomes For Students In A Public School, Alyssa M. Rodriguez
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The present study examined the effects of functionally indicated choice-based antecedent interventions on academic and behavioral outcomes for elementary general education students exhibiting elevated levels of off-task behavior during independent seat work. A replicated hybrid single-case design was used to compare two interventions: choice of task sequence (across-activity choice) and choice of peer (within-activity choice). Brief functional behavioral assessments (FBAs) informed hypothesized behavioral function and intervention match. Dependent variables included academic engagement (on-task behavior), with off-task behavior conceptualized as its inverse, as well as academic completion and accuracy; social validity was assessed from teachers and students. Results indicated support for …

When Civilians Involve Themselves In Crime Control: Do Perceived Police Legitimacy And Trust In The Police Predict Support For Vigilantism And Citizen’S Arrests?, Charlotte T. Parque
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Recent cases in which civilians involved themselves in the crime control process have garnered divided reactions, with some people supporting and others disapproving the civilians’ actions. Although existing research shows that perceptions of the police predict support of civilians involved in crime control, exact directions of the effects conflict. I address these conflicting findings by examining how people conceptualize police legitimacy and trust in the police, whether those conceptualizations align with scholarly definitions of legitimacy and trust, and explore if the two constructs differentially predict support of vigilantism. Additionally, I explore whether people approve of two types of civilian crime …

Addressing Mental Health In College Athletics: Developing A Mindfulness-Centered Curricular Intervention For Student-Athletes And Coaches, Douglas W. Lampman
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Rising rates of mental health concerns among collegiate student-athletes have intensified calls for a more holistic approach to athlete development and well-being. While student-athletes regularly interact with coaches and educators, few curricular interventions explicitly address mental and emotional wellness in the athletic context.
The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the development, implementation, and perceived impact of a mindfulness-centered approach and curriculum. This curriculum is designed explicitly for collegiate student-athletes and coaches. Grounded in mindfulness-based pedagogy, the curriculum addressed stress management, emotion regulation, interpersonal relationships, performance anxiety, and personal growth.
Using a multi-tiered qualitative design, data were collected …

From Sparks To Insights: An Aggregate Analysis On Arson And Explosive Data Reporting Published By The Atf (2014-2024), Zahra A. Khan
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
This thesis provides an aggregate assessment of arson and explosives incidents reported by the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, and Tobacco, from 2014 to 2024. This thesis is written to highlight trends, investigative outcomes, and evolving patterns of criminal activity. Analysis of the data reveals notable shifts in incident frequencies, data distributions, and case resolution rates. This suggests both emerging technologies and changing operational dynamics that have affected long-term trends in arson and explosive incidents. Variations in incident types and investigative outcomes underscore the interplay between law enforcement priorities, resource allocation, and reporting practices over the ten-year period. The study also …
Excavating Miranda, Samuel J. Levine
Excavating Miranda, Samuel J. Levine
Scholarly Works
Sixty years after it was decided, Miranda v. Arizona remains one of the most significant and renowned cases—as well as, arguably, one of the most controversial cases—in the history of the United States. Chief Justice Earl Warren’s majority opinion, establishing the eponymous Miranda warnings for custodial interrogation of criminal suspects, has prompted voluminous and continuing commentary, among both critics and supporters. This Article is part of an ongoing project exploring a particular aspect of Chief Justice Warren’s majority opinion: a footnote referencing Jewish legal sources, documenting an important passage at the start of a pivotal section of the opinion.

African American Attitudes Toward Supporting Older Adults: Differences By Lifecourse Stage, Nekehia T. Quashie, Sarah E. Patterson, Michelle A. Stage, Neil K. Mehta
Public Health Faculty Publications
African Americans express stronger norms of familism compared to other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Frequently overlooked is whether attitudes toward family and/or government support for older adults vary by lifecourse stage (young adult, midlife, and older adults) and type of support among African Americans. Using data from the 2001-2003 National Survey of American Life Adult Reinterview (n=1696, aged 18-90), multinomial logistic regression analyses were used to examine whether attitudes toward family, equal family and government, or government responsibility for financial, household chores, and personal care support to older adults vary by lifecourse stage. Findings showed that …

The Role Of The Coach In Student-Athlete Engagement, Christina Cobb
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Student engagement has long been recognized as a key indicator of student success in higher education, but limited research has examined engagement within the context of intercollegiate athletics. This qualitative case study explored how college coaches influence student-athlete engagement and how student-athletes utilize athletic department support services designed to promote engagement practices. Guided by Kuh et al.’s (2006) theory of student engagement, this study examined engagement through the lens of time and effort invested in educationally purposeful activities and the institutional environments that support or constrain participation.
Participants included six student-athletes, four coaches, and two athletic department administrators at a …
Investigating The Effects Of Values Clarification And Self-Compassion On Mental Health Self-Stigma And Willingness To Seek Psychological Help, Sara V. White
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Mental health self-stigma, or the harmful beliefs that one holds about his or her mental illness, is associated with psychological distress and acts as a significant barrier to help-seeking. Yet, self-stigma is notoriously resistant to change when targeted directly. To address such concerns, the present study examined the effects of two brief writing interventions, self-compassion and values clarification relative to a control condition, in reducing self-stigma and improving willingness and intentionality to seek psychological help. Additionally, the present study also explored the contributions of two theoretically relevant mechanisms—state self-compassion and psychological (in)flexibility—on self-stigma, and whether resistance to self-compassion negatively impacted …

The Chemistry Of Red Lipstick: The Impact Red Lipstick Has On Society, Lilliana Weldeslassie
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Cosmetic chemistry is deeply embedded in everyday life, shaping the products people use from morning to night. Among these, red lipstick stands out as a formulation that blends complex chemistry with a cultural meaning. This thesis examines the scientific foundations of red lipstick through its chemical composition, pigment structure, toxicological history, analytical methods, and evolving sustainability practices. Historically, red lipsticks relied on high-risk ingredients such as lead, mercury, and other toxic metals, reflecting an era before chemical safety and regulatory oversight were incorporated.21 Modern formulations have established safer synthetic dyes, natural waxes, plant-based oils, and stabilizers created to optimize …

Examining Ketamine's Differential Impact On Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Using The Ptsd Checklist For Dsm-5, Samantha G. Gomez
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be a debilitating and chronic condition. Current gold standard treatments are effective but face high dropout rates. Ketamine therapy is a promising and alternative treatment for those struggling with PTSD symptoms. Prior research has indicated significant reductions in overall PTSD symptoms. However, research regarding symptom-specific changes following ketamine therapy is limited. The present study aimed to extend previous work by MacConnel and colleagues (2025) regarding significant decreases in total PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) scores following ketamine treatment at an outpatient ketamine center, as well as examine potential symptom-specific changes. A final sample of 142 …
