A Theory Of The Engagement In Open Source Projects Via Summer Of Code Programs, Jefferson Silva, Igor Wiese, Daniel M. German, Christoph Treude, Marco A. Gerosa, Igor Steinmacher

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Summer of code programs connect students to open source software (OSS) projects, typically during the summer break from school. Analyzing consolidated summer of code programs can reveal how college students, who these programs usually target, can be motivated to participate in OSS, and what onboarding strategies OSS communities adopt to receive these students. In this paper, we study the well-established Google Summer of Code (GSoC) and devise an integrated engagement theory grounded in multiple data sources to explain motivation and onboarding in this context. Our analysis shows that OSS communities employ several strategies for planning and executing student participation, socially …

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The social norms approach is an established technique to bring about behaviour change through challenging misperceptions of peer behaviour. This approach is limited by a reliance on self-report and a lack of interactivity with the target population. At the same time, excessive use of digital devices, known as digital addiction, has been recognized as an emergent issue. There is potential to apply the social norms approach to digital addiction and, in doing so, address some of the limitations of the social norms field. In this study, we trialled a social norms …

Personality inference has received widespread attention for its potential to infer psychological well being, job satisfaction, romantic relationship success, and professional performance. In this research, we focus on Conscientiousness, one of the well studied Big Five personality traits, which determines if a person is self-disciplined, organized, and hard-working. Research has shown that Conscientiousness is related to a person's academic and workplace success. For an expert to evaluate a person's Conscientiousness, long-term observation of the person's behavior at work place or at home is usually required. To reduce this evaluation effort as well as to cope with the increasing trend of …

This paper examines how social preferences develop with age. This is done using a range of mini-dictator games from which we classify 665 subjects into a variety of behavioural types. We expand on previous developmental studies of pro-sociality and parochialism by analysing individuals aged 9–67, and by employing a cross country study where participants from Spain interact with participants from different ethnic groups (Arab, East Asian, Black and White) belonging to different countries (Morocco, China, Senegal and Spain). We identify a ‘U-shaped’ relationship between age and egalitarianism that had previously gone unnoticed, and appeared linear. An inverse “U-shaped” relationship is …

Haydn And Hypermeter: A Scaffolded Approach For Undergraduate Music Theory, Jennifer Salamone Nov 2020

Haydn And Hypermeter: A Scaffolded Approach For Undergraduate Music Theory, Jennifer Salamone

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

In recent years, hypermeter has emerged as a principal topic of interest for music theorists. Yet despite academic inquiry, the topic of hypermeter remains underutilized in music theory pedagogy. Intertwined with elements like harmony, melody, phrase structure, and motive, hypermeter is an ideal topic for undergraduates learning how to decipher the inner-workings of music. Not only does an exploration of hypermeter encourage close readings on various hierarchical levels but it also invites students to become actively engaged in the music: they listen, they sing, they conduct, and they ultimately decide upon interpretations that feel right.

The Metaphorisation Of ‘Vegeta’ In The Albanian Political Discourse, Jetmire Aliu, Arbër Çeliku

UBT International Conference

Metaphor, as a stylistic figure, finds use in both professional and everyday discourses. It serves as a weapon of expression, as a means of expressing the ninth, figurative and ornate meaning. In our communication space, recently, metaphor finds a dense use even in political discourse. In the current circumstances of Albanian policy-making, it often happens that we have conceptual ambiguities in the expression of what is said, scandals and even linguistic distortions, which cause a visible confusion of the entire public opinion. The most recent example to illustrate this is the metaphor of the vegeta in front of the media, …

For this reason, education indicators are increasingly being talked about, in very different contexts and referring to very different realities. Despite the many drawbacks that present, quantitative indicators are still in the process of improvement and even creation, the truth is that they facilitate the analysis of education, although their values do not explain the causal relationships or allow conclusions to be drawn univocal. Although in the different editions (OECD, 2008) some concrete indicators have been varying, the general structure is maintained around …
