Copyright And Attention Scarcity, Jake Linford Nov 2020

Copyright And Attention Scarcity, Jake Linford

Cardozo Law Review

As the costs of creating and sharing information have plummeted, some scholars question the continued utility of copyright protection, which imposes artificial scarcity so that authors can recoup creation and dissemination costs. Scholars have ignored, however, that when information is abundant, attention becomes a scarce resource. Superabundant information can overtax consumer attention.

Reducing copyright protection in this new environment may worsen the costs of attention scarcity on consumers of creative expression. Firms often compete for attention by free riding on the public interest generated by copyrighted works. If copyright protection is narrowed, new entrants have reduced motivation to create works …

Personnel Selection: A Longstanding Story Of Impact At The Individual, Firm, And Societal Level, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett, Charlene Zhang Nov 2020

Personnel Selection: A Longstanding Story Of Impact At The Individual, Firm, And Societal Level, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett, Charlene Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper discusses how and why the field of personnel selection has made a long-lasting mark in work and organizational psychology. We start by outlining the importance and relevance of the well-established analytical framework (criterion-related validity, incremental validity, utility) for examining the impact of selection at the individual (job performance) level. We also document the substantive criterion-related validities of most common selection procedures on the basis of cumulative meta-analytic research. Next, we review more recent research that investigated the impact of selection at the more macro organizational (firm performance) level. We show that the positive relationship between selection and performance …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Educators' Attitudes Toward Wellbeing Promotion In Irish Post-Primary Schools, David Byrne, Colm Mcguinness, Aiden Carthy

Other Resources

In 2017, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) published the NCCA wellbeing guidelines, mandating all post-primary schools in Ireland to allocate 300 hours of junior-cycle instruction to the promotion of students’ social and emotional wellbeing. Much is understood globally about the potential benefits of such programmes for students and educators alike. However, little is known within an Irish context regarding the attitudes and opinions of educators in this regard. The present study attended to this gap in knowledge.

This study administered the purpose-built “Attitudes Toward Wellbeing Promotion” (ATWP) scale to post-primary educators (n=327). Attitudes were assessed …

Housing Equity And Household Consumption In Retirement: Evidence From The Singapore Life Panel©, Lipeng Chen, Liang Jiang, Sock Yong Phang, Jun Yu Nov 2020

Housing Equity And Household Consumption In Retirement: Evidence From The Singapore Life Panel©, Lipeng Chen, Liang Jiang, Sock Yong Phang, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

Housing affordability for elderly homeowners involves an entirely different set of issues as compared to housing affordability for first-time homeowners. To afford to ‘age-in-place’ may require homeowners to access channels that enable them to withdraw their housing equity to finance consumption in retirement. We utilize data from the Singapore Life Panel© survey to empirically investigate the impact of housing equity on the consumption of elderly households. Based on panel analysis, we find housing equity value has no significant impact on non-durable consumption for elderly people. The conclusion holds for a battery of robustness checks. Moreover, heterogeneity analyses based on subsamples …

My Education Plan: A Teaching Mindset, Joseph Van Zante Nov 2020

My Education Plan: A Teaching Mindset, Joseph Van Zante

Honors Program Theses

The reason that I became a teacher was to help students achieve their full potential. Other people become teachers because they have a passion for working with young kids and seeing them grow. No matter the person and why they became a teacher, they still need to have a plan for how they want to teach. They have to decide what type of teacher they are going to be, how they are going to grade papers, and how much homework to assign. Then over the course of their teaching career they develop and change as a teacher. They learn new …

Examining The Role Of Supervisor Support On Generation Z'S Intention To Quit, Bharat Chillakuri

American Business Review

The purpose of this research is to examine Generation Z’s unmet expectations and work-related boredom and its impact on their intention to quit. The study investigates the moderating role of the supervisor support in the relationship between work-related boredom and intention to quit. This research advances the understanding of the adverse effects of employees' unmet expectations and work-related boredom. Generation Z joins the organizations with unrealistic expectations of work that, in turn, promote lower levels of commitment and higher turnover, and therefore warrants more research. Data were collected from 336 Generation Z respondents working in the information technology industry. The …

Pen Replacing Looms And Needles: Emergence Of Female Authors And Authority In Renaissance Europe, Anwita Roy Nov 2020

Pen Replacing Looms And Needles: Emergence Of Female Authors And Authority In Renaissance Europe, Anwita Roy

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

In Renaissance Europe gender discriminations were put aside when women of upper classes were prodigiously included in the “Reformist Movement,” allowing the spread of female literacy and writing throughout Europe. However, these measures still encountered frequent contemporary criticism and prevalent masculine oppression. This paper traces the possible reasons behind the encouragement provided to women during a time when education was limited to men. It will attempt to examine how these women profited from the educational endeavors they were provided with, the way they advocated the need to educate themselves, and how they responded to the criticism received from the society.

Picturing Forgotten Filipinx: Family Photographs And Resisting U.S. Colonial Amnesias, Stevie Cadiz, Alma M.O. Trinidad

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

U.S. imperialism in the Philippines has led to the multiple generations of diasporic conditions of colonial amnesia and systematic forgetting of history. Its impact on the Filipinx community has left unrecorded memories and voices of immigrants silenced, and considered lost to history. This study examines the relationship between U.S. colonialism and imperialism in the Philippines and the experiences of Filipinx immigration to the U.S. through a critical Indigenous feminist lens of visual imagery and storytelling. Given that many of the experiences within the Filipinx diaspora in relation to the American Empire have been systematically forgotten and erased, this study utilizes …

Why Do People Patronize Donation-Based Crowdfunding Platforms? An Activity Perspective Of Critical Success Factors, Yali Zhang, Chrissie Diane Tan, Jun Sun, Zhaojun Yang

Information Systems Faculty Publications

As a special type of social information systems, crowdfunding platforms draw researchers’ attention in recent years for their increasing popularity. In supplement to big-data analyses on user-generated content, behavioral research using survey and interview observations provide insights on why people like or hesitate to use such platforms. Nevertheless, extant studies focus on user intention and equity/reward-based projects, leaving the knowledge body on why people actually engage in donation-based crowdfunding underdeveloped. Based on Activity Theory, this study explores the critical success factors of crowdfunding in terms of website acceptance, crowd familiarity, and donation reciprocity. It then develops a research model that …

Section of Haematology/Oncology

Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumour in children and is a major cause of mortality and morbidity, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It has been risk-stratified on the basis of clinical (age, metastasis and extent of resection) and histological subtypes (classic, desmoplastic and anaplastic). However, recently medulloblastoma has been sub-grouped by using a variety of different genomic approaches, such as gene expression profiling, micro-ribonucleic acid profiling and methylation array into 4 groups, namely Wingless, Sonic hedgehog, Group 3 and Group 4. This new sub-grouping has important therapeutic and prognostic implications. After acute leukaemia, brain tumour is the …

Gender Differences In Hispanic High School Students' Attitudes Toward Mathematics, Leslie Marie Mcclammy Nov 2020

Gender Differences In Hispanic High School Students' Attitudes Toward Mathematics, Leslie Marie Mcclammy

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study examined the difference in attitudes towards mathematics between male and female Hispanic students in a large Florida school system using the Attitudes Towards Mathematics Inventory (ATMI). This study is important because it studies a population that is underserved in the literature of mathematics pedagogy: the Hispanic high school student. The ATMI itself has mostly been used on college students. This is one of the earliest attempts to use it in a high school setting. Though the survey was available to all students in the cooperating schools, only surveys where the student self-identified as Hispanic were examined. The results …

INTRODUCTION: Family history (FH) of alcohol dependence is likely to increase the risk of trauma exposure, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and alcohol dependence. FH of alcohol dependence and trauma has been separately shown to adversely affect planning/problem-solving aspects of executive function. However, few studies have examined these risk factors in an integrated model.

METHODS: Using data from trauma-exposed individuals from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism prospective cohort (N = 1,860), comprising offspring from alcohol-dependent high-risk and comparison families (mean age [SE] = 21.9 [4.2]), we investigated associations of trauma (nonsexual assaultive, nonassaultive, sexual assaultive) with DSM-IV PTSD …

A Tripartite Model Of Trust In Facebook: Acceptance Of Information Personalization, Privacy Concern, And Privacy Literacy, Sonny Rosenthal, Ole-Christian Wasenden, Gorm-Andreas Gronnevet, Rich Ling

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This study draws on the mental accounting perspective and a tripartite model of trust to explain why users trust Facebook. We argue that trust in Facebook is related to (1) trust in companies that collect personal data, (2) acceptance of information personalization, (3) low privacy concern, and (4) low privacy literacy. Further, we argue that privacy literacy amplifies the relationship between privacy concern and the other factors. This is because, among individuals with high privacy literacy, privacy concern is especially diagnostic of the potential harms of a loss of privacy. These arguments align broadly with theorizations about factors influencing privacy-related …
