Digital Resources For Pain Management: Psychologists' Perspectives And Suggestions, Kate Mckinlay, Anna Chur-Hansen Oct 2020

Digital Resources For Pain Management: Psychologists' Perspectives And Suggestions, Kate Mckinlay, Anna Chur-Hansen

Modern Psychological Studies

Chronic pain has high prevalence, complexity, psychosocial and economic impact. There is a growing interest in the development and use of digital resources accessed through electronic devices for pain management. Qualitative interviews with eight registered psychologists explored their perspectives of and suggestions regarding digital resources for pain management. Six overarching themes were identified, indicating that digital resources are perceived as useful. Difficulties were identified pertaining to digital social support and client-decision making, plus perceived barriers and facilitators for digital resource use. Participants offered suggestions about what an ideal digital resource would incorporate. These findings may inform the modification of existing …

Youth, Interrupted: Encouraging A Holistic Approach To Juvenile Incarceration Policy, Ashley Tisdale Oct 2020

Youth, Interrupted: Encouraging A Holistic Approach To Juvenile Incarceration Policy, Ashley Tisdale

Modern Psychological Studies

Scientific research into the experience of juveniles in detention has recently had an impact on court rulings. In the cases of Roper v Simmons (2005), Graham v Florida (2010) and Miller v. Alabama (2012) judges used research in juvenile cognitive development to inform their rulings. Though current research covers different aspects of juvenile experience in the criminal justice system, few studies approach the subject holistically or examine the inherent symbiotic relationship between juvenile detention policy and juvenile incarceration. This literature review seeks to present information on and encourage further examination of this relationship. For the purposes of the review, the …

Parental Perceptions Of Children With And Without Learning Disabilities, Leah I. Janikowski, Jill M. Norvilitis Oct 2020

Parental Perceptions Of Children With And Without Learning Disabilities, Leah I. Janikowski, Jill M. Norvilitis

Modern Psychological Studies

The present study examined differences in how parents of children with and without learning disabilities perceive their children academically. Of 235 participants, all recruited through Amazon’s MTurk platform, 124 (52%) had a child with a learning disability. Compared to parents of children without learning disabilities, parents who had children with learning disabilities reported that their children were less motivated and that their children cared less about getting good grades. Parents of children with a disability reported lower parental satisfaction compared to parents of children without learning disabilities. Among parents of children with learning disabilities, greater perception of stigma was negatively …

Relationships Between Anthropometry And Maximal Strength In Male Classic Powerlifters, Pierre-Marc Ferland, Antoine Laurier, Alain-Steve Comtois Oct 2020

Relationships Between Anthropometry And Maximal Strength In Male Classic Powerlifters, Pierre-Marc Ferland, Antoine Laurier, Alain-Steve Comtois

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 13(4): 1512-1531, 2020. Several studies have determined the influence of physical characteristics on strength. The present quantified the relationships between anthropometry and maximal strength. Male classic powerlifters (n=59) were measured before a championship. Two-tailed Pearson correlation analysis was used. Powerlifters that presented higher relative maximal strength (RMS) in the squat and bench generally had higher body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), torso circumference (C), waist C/height, torso C/height (r=0.26 to 0.49, p<0.05), and smaller lower leg length (L)/height and forearm L/torso C (r=-0.31 to -0.45, p<0.05) ratios. Powerlifters with a higher % of their deadlift on their total generally presented a smaller BW, BMI, body fat percentage (BF%), waist and torso C, trunk L, waist C/height, torso C/height, trunk L/height, waist C/hip C, thigh L/ lower leg L, trunk L/thigh L ratios (r=-0.26 to -0.49, p<0.05) and higher lower leg L, lower leg L/height, reach/height, and forearm L/torso C ratios (r=0.32 to 0.51, p<0.05). Stepwise regressions revealed that a bigger torso positively predicted absolute maximal strength (AMS) in the squat (β=0.41, p=0.04), the bench (β=0.77, p<0.01), the deadlift (β=0.88, p<0.01) and the total (β=0.89, p<0.01), that a higher torso C/height ratio positively predicted RMS in the squat(β=0.48, p<0.01), the bench (β=-0.87, p<0.01) and the total (β=0.66, p<0.01), and that reach/height positively predicted RMS in the deadlift (β=0.37, p<0.01) and it’s % on the total (β=0.31, p<0.01), but negatively predicted RMS in the bench (β=-0.25, p=0.02) and its % on the total (β=-0.24, p=0.04) As all of the stronger correlations came from AMS, powerlifters should focus on increasing AMS (weight lifted) instead of RMS (Wilks pts).

Where We Go One, We Go All: Qanon And Violent Rhetoric On Twitter, Samuel Planck Oct 2020

Where We Go One, We Go All: Qanon And Violent Rhetoric On Twitter, Samuel Planck

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study concerns the rhetoric of the QAnon conspiracy theory as it appears on Twitter, and compares that rhetoric to that of mainstream conservatives on the same platform. By coding individual tweets' content for specific instances of violent, religious, economic, or paranoid rhetoric, and comparing samples of both of these populations, the study aims to determine what differences there are between the QAnon community's uses of rhetoric, particularly violent rhetoric, and that of the mainstream conservative community. The results demonstrate that the QAnon movement is more likely to use violent terminology in their tweets, but is not able to find …

Far, Far, Away… In Ireland: Reading “Eveline” As A Fairytale, Anne Pino Oct 2020

Far, Far, Away… In Ireland: Reading “Eveline” As A Fairytale, Anne Pino

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper gives a fresh new perspective on James Joyce’s classic short story "Eveline". "Eveline" is read and analyzed through a fairytale lens and compared to the classic Disney princess Cinderella. This comparison provides perspective on gender roles, Irish oppression, and the purpose of Eveline’s ultimate paralysis. Garnering support from critics Gary Leonard, Margot Norris, and Maxwell Uphaus, this paper serves to evaluate the importance of symbols and allegory in the text. The most important symbols that relate "Eveline" to a dejected Irish princess are the lack of parental support, dust, and prince charming meant to rescue the main character. …

When Is Family Involvement Effective In Substance Abuse Treatment: An Analysis Of The Existing Literature From A Social Work Perspective, Alyssa F. Giarrusso Oct 2020

When Is Family Involvement Effective In Substance Abuse Treatment: An Analysis Of The Existing Literature From A Social Work Perspective, Alyssa F. Giarrusso

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

Substance abuse is a growing problem in today’s society. While there are many different forms of treatment for substance abuse, some forms of treatment have proven to be more effective than others. In some cases, family intervention in substance abuse treatment has proven to be more effective than treatments that do not include family intervention. This paper is an analysis of existing literature regarding substance abuse treatment, highlighting specific circumstances in which family intervention tends to be most effective.

“Everything That Makes A Man”: Gender And Body Transformations In Yde Et Olive, Kyle Gaydo Oct 2020

“Everything That Makes A Man”: Gender And Body Transformations In Yde Et Olive, Kyle Gaydo

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

Many might find the Middle Ages too far in the past to speak to the present; however, this paper aims to turn that idea on its head through its focus on a historically marginalized group of people. Concentrating on the thirteenth-century Old French poem Yde et Olive, this paper analyzes medieval Europe’s complex relationship between gender and ideas of the body. Yde, the titular character, lives a life of relative comfort with her father, King Florent of Aragon. Her life becomes terribly worse when her father admits to incestuous desires to marry her. Yde, horrified, escapes by putting on …

Group Homes In The Foster Care System: A Literature Review, Katherine Dolan Oct 2020

Group Homes In The Foster Care System: A Literature Review, Katherine Dolan

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper examines literature with regard to the advantages and disadvantages of group homes within the foster care system. Group homes are associated with a negative stigma. The bleak narrative of group care stems, in part, to stereotypes surrounding behavioral and psychiatric issues. Researchers have found children in foster care experience poor living standards, are restricted by their environments, and are unhappy in group homes. Conversely, group homes provide a sense of community in a seemingly lonely situation, provide children with safer conditions than those they were removed from, and serve as a means of housing for children with no …

The Adaptationist View: Ambiguity In Infant Withdrawal After Prenatal Cocaine Exposure, Angelo Cadiente Oct 2020

The Adaptationist View: Ambiguity In Infant Withdrawal After Prenatal Cocaine Exposure, Angelo Cadiente

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome is a set of symptoms that result from prenatal exposure to addictive drugs. This syndrome is often attributed to opiate withdrawal; yet, there is a controversy within the literature as to whether cocaine, an addictive stimulant, leads to a variant, which I term “cocaine-based Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.” In this paper, I contrast the evidence that supports the presence of cocaine withdrawal in neonates with the opposing evidence that supports its absence. I offer an intermediary explanation through the “Adaptationist View,” which attributes the supposed symptoms of cocaine infant withdrawal to the neonate adapting to extreme changes in …

Sin And The Hacker Ethic: The Tragedy Of Techno-Utopian Ideology In Cyberspace Business Cultures, Bruce D. Baker Oct 2020

Sin And The Hacker Ethic: The Tragedy Of Techno-Utopian Ideology In Cyberspace Business Cultures, Bruce D. Baker

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

This article traces the course of idealistic thinking in the “hacker ethic” of the computer industry, with the aim of diagnosing the unfortunate lapses in business ethics that can ensue from idealistic thinking. Several Silicon Valley companies are mentioned, but Facebook is the prime example, simply because they are the biggest target and clearest example of bad ethics. The original “hacker ethic” was founded on admirable ideals, but the problem occurs when these ideals are used to rationalize a self-serving ideology. Facebook’s history shows how idealistic thinking can become embedded in a business culture. As an antidote to the ethical …

Examining The Factor Structure Of A Middle School Stem Occupational Values Scale, Jessica Harlan, James Van Haneghan Oct 2020

Examining The Factor Structure Of A Middle School Stem Occupational Values Scale, Jessica Harlan, James Van Haneghan

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

As part of a longitudinal study of the development and implementation of a middle school engineering design curriculum, we have used an occupational values subscale of the Assessing Men and Women in Engineering (AWE) project’s Engineering version of the Core Survey for Middle School-Aged Participants to measure student occupational interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). According to the developers, this set of tools is intended to measure factors related to STEM careers, including occupational interests. While the AWE tools have been widely used, there have been no formal examinations of the psychometric properties of the middle school tools. …

Oklahoma Progress Update - A Revised Employee Selection Process: Virtual & Paperless, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

Other QIC-WD Products

“I am convinced that nothing we do is more important than hiring and developing people. At the end of the day, you bet on people, not on strategies.” – Lawrence Bossidy, former CEO of Honeywell International Inc. This quote is especially true for child welfare workers. Child welfare work is difficult and demanding; it requires compassion and attention to detail. Oklahoma Human Services (OKDHS), in partnership with the Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development (QIC-WD), worked throughout 2018 and 2019 to create a competencybased employee selection process for Child Welfare Services (CWS) workers. Competencies are the knowledge, skills, abilities, behaviors, …

Do Pets Improve Mental Health During Covid Lockdowns?, Harold Herzog

Herzog - Companion Animals and Health

During Covid lockdowns, shelters and pet stores have reported an increased demand for pets to adopt or buy. It has been suggested that pets might help address loneliness during periods of social isolation. A new study in the UK found that there was a small positive effect of pet ownership during Covid lockdowns but there were also associated worries such as what might happen to the pet if the owner became ill.

Does Conjoint Analysis Reliably Value Patents?, Bernard Chao, Sydney Donovan Oct 2020

Does Conjoint Analysis Reliably Value Patents?, Bernard Chao, Sydney Donovan

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Modern technology products are often covered by thousands of patents. Yet awards for a single component have averaged a surprisingly high 9.98 percent of the infringing product’s price. To curb such disproportionate awards, the law insists that damages reflect the contribution made by the patent. But determining how to apportion damages in this way has proved to be elusive. One emerging technique that appears to offer rigor is conjoint analysis, a type of survey borrowed from the marketing world. This article explores the validity of the conjoint analysis technique by running two conjoint analysis surveys. Unfortunately, we found serious problems. …

Nursing Students' Perceptions Regarding Faculty Feedback, Deborah Hartzog Chatham Oct 2020

Nursing Students' Perceptions Regarding Faculty Feedback, Deborah Hartzog Chatham

Dissertations

Higher education researchers in a variety of disciplines have explored instructor and student perceptions of what constitutes feedback that is useful and timely. Researchers agree that students desire feedback but are often not sure of how to interpret or use faculty comments. Students vary in an understanding of what constitutes feedback. Nursing researchers have conducted fewer studies to determine student concerns regarding faculty feedback. Nursing faculty differ in perceptions of what constitutes effective feedback. Nursing faculty use various forms of feedback, such as written comments, audio recordings, and automatically generated feedback. These variations suggest nursing faculty do not always know …

Academic Success Factors Influencing Linguistically Diverse And Native English Speaking Associate Degree Nursing Students, Josie L. Veal Oct 2020

Academic Success Factors Influencing Linguistically Diverse And Native English Speaking Associate Degree Nursing Students, Josie L. Veal

Dissertations

To address the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations, nursing educators should evaluate educational preparedness and identify which factors influence a successive academic trajectory in nursing school. A prospective design was used to determine the relationships and differences among the anatomy and physiology course grade, self-efficacy, linguistic diversity, language acculturation, and components of the National League for Nursing pre-admission exam for registered nurses and first semester nursing course grades of linguistically diverse and native English speaking associate degree nursing students. A relationship exists between the PAX-RN composite score, anatomy mean grade, language diversity, and general self-efficacy score, the Nursing Pharmacology and …

Discriminating Global Orientation Of Two Element Sets, Aytaç Karabay, Daniel D. Kurylo Oct 2020

Discriminating Global Orientation Of Two Element Sets, Aytaç Karabay, Daniel D. Kurylo

Publications and Research

Perceived global organization of visual patterns is based upon the aggregate contribution of constituent components. Patterns constructed from multiple sources cooperate or compete for global organization. An investigation was made here of interactions between two interspersed element sets on global orientation. It was hypothesized that each set would operate as an integrated unit, and contribute independently to global orientation. Participants viewed a 10 x 10 array of Gabor patches, and indicated the predominant orientation of the array. In Experiment 1 all elements were rotated. Rotation up to 23° had little effect, whereas greater rotation produced a progressive shift on global …

Poverty, Literacy, And Race: A Middle School Teacher's Iterative Investigative Journey, Rebecca Tuttle Oct 2020

Poverty, Literacy, And Race: A Middle School Teacher's Iterative Investigative Journey, Rebecca Tuttle

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

This study describes an iterative design process that helped me gain a better understanding of the problems (how motivation affects learning and gaining the trust of children that I worked with) I was inquiring about. The design process chronicles three iterations before reaching my final research question focused on building relationships with children of minoritized communities within their learning environment and integrating culturally relevant pedagogy into their learning. By combining these two strategies, the children in this study seemed to embrace being part of a culturally relevant experiment. The components of these iterations include pre-reading activities, read alouds, group discussions, …

Parental Survey To Assess Risk Factors And Incidence Of Falls In Pediatric Ambulatory Services, Mary Dempsey Gordon, Marlene Walden, Curt C. Braun, Joseph L. Hagan

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Falls and the related sequelae represent hazards recognized by healthcare organizations, but evidence describing the incidence and risks of falls in pediatric ambulatory settings is limited. This study engaged parents to assess fall incidence and to investigate predictors of patients who fell from those that did not.
