Architectural Education In Egypt: Towards A Gender Sensitive Studio, Yasmine Samak, Ahmed El-Kholei, Mohamed Ibrahim
Architectural Education In Egypt: Towards A Gender Sensitive Studio, Yasmine Samak, Ahmed El-Kholei, Mohamed Ibrahim
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Architecture is a profession that men have dominated for centuries, while the transmission model of education has been the common basis for architectural education. In Egypt, architectural education continues to be masculine despite the increase in the number of female students enrolled in architectural programs. In such a type of education, the studio is the venue where concepts and building competencies are transformed. Therefore, this research paper investigates the impact of gender inequality on architectural education by surveying the educational process in the studio among male and female students at Egyptian universities. By exploring the actual difficulties related to gender …

Effects Of Sounds And Lyrics In Brick Tile Installation; Innovative Methods Ofarchitectural Education, Alireza Mashhadimirza
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
This qualitative paper investigates a new method of architectural education in architecture studio monitoring in the field of brick tilling. It covered a background to the related fields based on art and design methods, which have been used in Iran dating back thousands of years until present. As a research methodology, a deep observation on conventional method of carpet-weaving workshops, shaped the first steps of this article. In this method, the overall plan that includes a floral carpet to ranges of square pixels and color finds their own characteristics as paint, rows and columns. In these studios, someone took the …

Rethinking The Epistemology And Learning Process In Contemporary Designstudio - A Constructionist Approach, Hally El Kony, Ghada El Kony, Magdy Mousa
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
The paper examines the epistemology and learning process in the contemporary design studio. It provides a particular focus on the learners' engagement level and their ability to integrate their acquired knowledge in a systemic approach that enables them to create innovative yet authentic settings and products. In this context, the authors investigate the impacts of two aspects on the design process, the design outcome and the overall learning quality. These aspects are narrowed down to :1- the learning environment and theories as implemented in design studios, and 2- the perceptual behavior and its related variables as integrated in the design …
Architectural Body: Performance As Design Methodology Facilitating Transformative Learning, Takako Hasegawa
Architectural Body: Performance As Design Methodology Facilitating Transformative Learning, Takako Hasegawa
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
This paper will discuss multidisciplinary and experimental pedagogical case studies that place the importance of the body firmly back into architectural education. The advanced digital technologies currently employed almost universally in architectural education generate increasingly virtual and augmented design, resulting from processes that tend to be devoid of imagination of the body. The case studies discussed in this paper involved students’ direct participation in performative acts during the design process, facilitating positive transformative learning through direct experience. These include design briefs for Chelsea College of Arts (London, UK, 2009–2013), modules for the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA) (London, UK, …

Re-Thinking Bloom's Taxonomy By Integrating Digital Simulation In, Samer El Sayary, Hiba Mohsen, Lamis Mantash
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Despite the significant developments in adapting Bloom's taxonomy in architectural design studio in the last few years, in addition to the advancements in applying digital media in the education process, there is still no integrated framework that combines all threads together. The learning objectives of advanced design studio include pragmatic thinking through testing new hypotheses, evaluating and applying different parameters, and identifying appropriate decisions. These are only achieved once barriers between design studio and building sciences considerations are overcome by addressing the process of simulation across the domains and levels of the revised Bloom's taxonomy. The Design Studio and building …

The Invisible Web At Work: Artificial Intelligence And Electronic Surveillance In The Workplace, Richard A. Bales, Katherine Vw Stone
AI-DR Collection
Employers and others who hire or engage workers to perform services use a dizzying array of electronic mechanisms to make personnel decisions about hiring, worker evaluation, compensation, discipline, and retention. These electronic mechanisms include electronic trackers, surveillance cameras, metabolism monitors, wearable biological measuring devices, and implantable technology. These tools enable employers to record their workers’ every movement, listen in on their conversations, measure minute aspects of performance, and detect oppositional organizing activities. The data collected is transformed by means of artificial intelligence (A-I) algorithms into a permanent electronic resume that can identify and predict an individual’s performance as well as …

Challenges And Opportunities For The Prevention And Treatment Of Cardiovascular Disease Among Young Adults: Report From A National Heart, Lung, And Blood Institute Working Group, Heather Johnson
All Publications
Improvements in cardiovascular disease (CVD) rates among young adults in the past 2 decades have been offset by increasing racial/ethnic and gender disparities, persistence of unhealthy lifestyle habits, overweight and obesity, and other CVD risk factors. To enhance the promotion of cardiovascular health among young adults 18 to 39 years old, the medical and broader public health community must understand the biological, interpersonal, and behavioral features of this life stage. Therefore, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, with support from the Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research, convened a 2-day workshop in Bethesda, Maryland, in September 2017 to …

While incredibly disruptive to everyday life, the COVID-19 pandemic provides a unique opportunity to study the influence of social distancing and quarantine behaviors on mental health and relationship quality. In this study, we used a snowball sample of 519 Americans to examine whether there were relationships between personality, degree of adherence to social distancing and quarantining norms and regulations, and psychological wellness and relationship quality. We discovered several interesting patterns, some more intuitive than others. Specifically, we present evidence of several interactive effects between personality and degree of social distancing predicting psychological wellness and relationship quality with cohabitants, indicating that …

Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST) alters the balance of sensory input to the nervous system by systematically attenuating sensory signals from visual, auditory, thermal, tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive channels. Previous research from our group has shown that REST via floatation acutely reduces anxiety and blood pressure (BP) while simultaneously heightening interoceptive awareness in clinically anxious populations. Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterized by elevated anxiety, distorted body representation, and abnormal interoception, raising the question of whether REST might positively impact these symptoms. However, this approach has never been studied in eating disorders, and it is unknown whether exposure …

Peninsula Medical School
Abstract Background Falls are the most common reason for ambulance callouts resulting in non-conveyance. Even in the absence of injury, only half of those who fall can get themselves up off the floor, often remaining there over an hour, increasing risk of complications. There are recognized techniques for older people to learn how to get up after a fall, but these are rarely taught. The aim of this study was to develop an understanding of attitudes of older people, carers and health professionals on getting up following a fall. Methods A qualitative focus group and semi-structured interviews were conducted with …
The Impact Of Emotional Regulation On Treatment Burden In The Primary Care Population, Nathanial Schreiner
The Impact Of Emotional Regulation On Treatment Burden In The Primary Care Population, Nathanial Schreiner
Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports
For the 60% of the US population living with one or more chronic conditions, understanding how emotional regulation contributes to treatment burden is an unstudied, yet potentially important dynamic affecting self-management adherence.
Our findings indicate emotional regulation appears to be an important factor in determining the level of cumulative, medication and dietary treatment burden a patient experiences when engaging in their daily self-management regimen. Most importantly, findings demonstrate that improving emotional regulation can reduce the amount of burden a patient experiences thereby improving subsequent adherence to a self-management regimen.

Publications and Research
Recently there has been growing concern regarding the staffing challenges that plague the U.S. correctional system. This study examines whether staffing challenges within residential facilities are associated with changes in dynamic risk and the likelihood of reoffending among a sample of serious juvenile offenders returning to the community from residential placement. Using administrative data on 2,022 youth who completed a court-imposed placement, in combination with information drawn from a provider’s human resources database, we employ several analytical techniques to untangle the effects of staffing difficulties on youth outcomes. Results indicate that the rate of unscheduled absences was associated with changes …
