Facilitating Early Intervention Through Teacher Training In Brief Functional Behavior Assessment, Casie L. Peet Oct 2020

Facilitating Early Intervention Through Teacher Training In Brief Functional Behavior Assessment, Casie L. Peet

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nearly 30% of students who enter state-funded early childhood education programs exhibit significant problem behavior, putting them at risk for long-term adverse behavioral and academic outcomes. Tier 2 behavioral interventions might not be effective for all when delivered in a one-size-fits-all fashion suggesting that individualizing behavioral intervention to the student’s specific concerns may be. To do so, it is necessary to collect problem identification data indicative of each student’s concerns and function of problem behaviors. This question is particularly pertinent in early childhood settings where educators have a wide range of training experiences and backgrounds. Early childhood teachers are essential …

Optimizing Public Transportation Networks Using Space Syntax As An Evidence-Based Approach: The Case Study Of Mansoura City., Sara Elgamal, Sherief Sheta, Mohanad Foda

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Transport network planning in Egypt suffers from insufficient planning that should be done prior to execution. This research presses on the fact that personal experience and cognition alone cannot be the main factors of design that it should go hand in hand with scientific measurable analysis and evidence. Hence, it focuses on having a deeper understanding of the influence of spatial network configuration on urban activity and centrality. It proposes that Space Syntax, as a syntactic model, has potential to be utilized in optimizing transportation networks, based on Space Syntax ability to model and predict streets with most urban activity …

From Aesthetics To Ethics: The Place Of Delight In Confucian Ethics, Andrew Lambert Oct 2020

From Aesthetics To Ethics: The Place Of Delight In Confucian Ethics, Andrew Lambert

Publications and Research

An exploration of the role of pleasure or delight (le 樂) in classical Confucian ethics. Building on Michael Nylan’s account of the role of pleasure in public spectacle and social order, I explore how the meaning of delight (le 樂) derives from the features and effects of music (yue 樂). Drawing on Dewey’ s aesthetics and accounts of music in Confucian texts, I explore a conception of Confucian ethics, in which delight— like states generated through everyday social interaction are foundational.

The Depositional Environments And Structures Of The Borrowdale Volcanic Group And The Windermere Supergroup In The Southern Lake District, England, Thomas O'Hagan Oct 2020

The Depositional Environments And Structures Of The Borrowdale Volcanic Group And The Windermere Supergroup In The Southern Lake District, England, Thomas O'Hagan

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Field studies have been undertaken on the Borrowdale Volcanic Group (BVG) and the Windermere super group (WS) in the southern Lake District. This study has been conducted to provide further work towards the understanding of the BVG’s emplacement and the depositional environments of the WS. Formal unit descriptions and stratigraphic columns are compiled from field data and accompanied by stereonet, cross section, and thin section analysis. Numerous depositional features, including asymmetric ripples and aligned clasts, found within the BVG are supportive of a sub aerial and lacustrine setting for emplacement. Bow tie fiamme and rheomorphic flow structures also hold similar …

Defying Dementia: An Exploration Of Recovery, Deb Miller, Corey W. Johnson Oct 2020

Defying Dementia: An Exploration Of Recovery, Deb Miller, Corey W. Johnson

The Qualitative Report

Exploring the human side of dementia helps put a face on this fast-growing affliction. This study reflects one elderly woman’s story of recovery from dementia that arose following a stroke. Painting a portrait of life with dementia can help us conceptualize the experience, how people live and how they would like to live. The woman is Marcia, my mom, and this is a qualitative inquiry with a collaborative narrative design to explore her experiences and to document my own. This study may help dementia patients and their support teams better understand the process of living with dementia and can perhaps …

Strategic Consequences: How Executive And Organizational Decision-Making Impacts The Outcome Of Unconventional Warfare, Joseph Osborne Oct 2020

Strategic Consequences: How Executive And Organizational Decision-Making Impacts The Outcome Of Unconventional Warfare, Joseph Osborne

Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations

Conventional academic discussion vis-à-vis America’s Special Operations Forces, is largely focused at the tactical and operational level of analysis. This means the emphasis on explaining outcomes is placed on personnel (recruiting, assessing, selecting, and training), cutting edge equipment, innovative tactics, or advanced command and control procedures. Addressing this long-standing trend, I argue that factors well beyond the widely accepted explanations for success or failure are in play. Additionally, these factors are understandable, are manageable, and may have as great or greater an impact on the outcome of a campaign as any tactical consideration. Using the narrowly defined and discrete special …

Views Of The Highway: Infrastructure Reality, Perceptions, And Politics, Linda M. Fogg, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Erin S. Bell

Faculty Publications

Transportation infrastructure such as highways and bridges requires upgrades and maintenance. In many U.S. regions, these requirements have surpassed current funding, so new solutions are needed. One obvious though imperfect source is gasoline taxes, but raising these is politically risky, regardless of need. To illuminate this conflict, we analyze data from four random-sample telephone surveys (2016–2018, n = 2,035) that asked residents in the U.S. state of New Hampshire about their perceptions of highway and bridge conditions, and support for gas tax increases. About one third of the respondents counterfactually reported that highway and bridge conditions had improved compared with …

Abstract

Objective The rise of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) from Wuhan, China, in December 2019 has spread to more than 188 countries and has affected more than 13 million people. In response to this crisis, recommendations by the World Health Organization have changed the practice of current medicine, but there is little research as to how high-volume ambulatory specialties such as ophthalmology are adapting. The purpose of this study is to determine how ophthalmology practices are reacting and changing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods Approval was obtained from Saint Louis University School of Medicine Institutional Review Board. An anonymous survey …

Evaluating The Role Of Citizen Science In Biological Investigations, Fiona Day Oct 2020

Evaluating The Role Of Citizen Science In Biological Investigations, Fiona Day

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Considering recent and predicted ecological changes (caused by global climate change), baseline monitoring of biological diversity becomes an extremely useful record to have. Citizen science provides a unique, low-cost, high output method of attaining large data sets which has already been implemented in several studies. They are used by major bodies such as the Natural History Museum, OPAL and the RSPB. Despite this concerns lie with the accuracy of the data – can volunteers really produce real data? In this study various aspects were investigated, firstly the current public opinion about citizen science, how we can train volunteers carrying out …

Investigating The Effects Of Interrupting Gender-Related Schematic Encoding And Memory Recall In An Adult Population, Kirralise Hansford Oct 2020

Investigating The Effects Of Interrupting Gender-Related Schematic Encoding And Memory Recall In An Adult Population, Kirralise Hansford

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Schema theory accounts for the incompleteness and distortions in memory. Theories suggest a person’s prior knowledge can influence their encoding and retrieval abilities. Concerning gender-schemas, someone’s stereotypical gender biases can influence their schematic encoding and memory recall. These theories were tested in the current study by assessing participants recall of events and gender biases at explicit and implicit levels. Explicit recall was assessed through a questionnaire regarding a passage of text previously presented to participants, and implicit gender biases were assessed through an IAT. Within this study there were four conditions organised in a 2 x 2 design. Conditions consisted …

Developing A Common Language Of Ethical Engagement In Teaching: Lessons For And From A Time Of Crisis, Richard D. Sawyer

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This article explores how educators may develop and contribute to a common language of ethical engagement, a language that rises above specific actions but is grounded in ethical practice and scholarship. Questions are raised about how online education may further the patterns educational inequities in the United States. An ethics framework is explored through a comparison. The author explores the educational principles--not standards—that educators can surface in their teaching practice. A discussion is included of recent dilemmas and problems with online teaching environments, underscoring the need for ethical principles helping to frame practice.

The Meaning Of Javanese Adolescents' Involvement In Youth Gangs During The Discoveries Of Youth Identity: A Phenomenological Study, Enung Hasanah, Supardi Supardi

The Qualitative Report

Yogyakarta is a part of Javanese society. Javanese culture, which always enforces moral values, has a practical implication toward adolescents' views about their self-identity. Yogyakarta adolescents are well known to have positive self-identity, good behavior, and tend to become successful persons in their youth. In the past years, a phenomenon of youth gangs that often conduct irresponsible acts such as brawls, stabbing terror, and even murder has emerged. The question of the research is how adolescent members of a youth gang give meaning to their involvement in a youth gang. To answer the question, we used a phenomenological research method. …

Research on the relationship between religion, spirituality, and health suggests that religious involvement can help people deal with various kinds of adversity. Although there has been a great deal of work on the influence of religious involvement and religious and spiritual practices on physical, mental, and relational health, there exists a gap in the theoretical and empirical literature about the potential benefits of transcendent religious experiences on marriage and family relationships. We report some findings from a study of in-depth interviews with 198 religious American exemplar families from diverse religious, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds. The religious-ethnic make-up of the sample …

Weight Status Of Children Aged 2-5 Years Old, Attending A Paediatric Outpatient Clinic And Its Association With Parental Feeding Style And Parental Perceptions Of Weight Status, Aisling Lee, Helen Callaghan, Dara Gallagher Dr, Annette Lalor, Louise Rattigan, Hilary Greaney, Laura Keaver

SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal

Background: A child’s weight status can allow health care professionals to assess their developmental growth. A child having a low or high weight for height could be due to an imbalance in nutrient intake occurring. It is important to balance dietary intake and physical activity to maintain a healthy weight status. Excessive consumption of food can lead to an overweight/obese weight status which is linked to non-communicable diseases. Parental feeding style can directly impact a child’s set of eating behaviours. Therefore, parents have a strong influence over a child’s growth pattern. In addition, parental awareness of childhood obesity is reported …

Developing A Model Of Graduate Teaching Assistant Teacher Efficacy: How Do High And Low Teacher Efficacy Teaching Assistants Compare?, Cody R. Smith, Cesar Delgado

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Graduate teaching assistants (TAs) are often responsible for teaching introductory courses to undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics students. The TAs are usually novices at teaching, and an important factor in their resilience and persistence in the face of inevitable challenges is self-efficacy. Little is known about what affects TA teacher efficacy or whether and how high- and low-efficacy TAs differ in their development as teachers. Bridging these gaps in the literature will inform best practices in developing and implementing professional development (PD) for TAs. Using a mixed-methods sequential exploratory research design, this study found differences in high- and low-efficacy …

Behavioral Engagement Of Students With Emotional Behavioral Disorders, Anna Stevens Oct 2020

Behavioral Engagement Of Students With Emotional Behavioral Disorders, Anna Stevens

Graduate Teacher Education

This review of literature focused on managing the behavior of students in a classroom. Furthermore, it was acknowledged that students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Educators have known that without being able to manage behavior, specifically that of students with EBD, addressing academics would be challenging. Thus, the need for strategies to improve behavior was evident. The research question was how can educators foster the behavioral engagement of students with EBD? Analysis and synthesis of the research produced three themes: praise, social and emotional support, and individualized attention. Within the themes were specific strategies educators could implement …

Environmental Justice, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, And Native Hawaiians And Other Pacific Islanders, Michael S. Spencer, Taurmini Fentress, Ammara Touch, Jessica Hernandez Oct 2020

Environmental Justice, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, And Native Hawaiians And Other Pacific Islanders, Michael S. Spencer, Taurmini Fentress, Ammara Touch, Jessica Hernandez

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders, and the environment that they are in relationship with, have been the targets of exploitation, extraction, and destruction. Environmental atrocities throughout the Pacific have demonstrated the ways imperialism, capitalism and white supremacy drive destruction through efforts to dominate and exploit for material gain. The relationship between Pacific people and the environment, which defines who they are socially, spiritually, and ancestrally, continues to be damaged and even severed by these injustices. The purpose of this paper is to provide examples of major environmental injustices in the Pacific and to develop a deeper understanding of the …

Reimagining Disability: The Screening Of Donor Gametes And Embryos In Ivf, Isabel Karpin, Roxanne Mykitiuk

Articles & Book Chapters

In this article,we examine how disability is figured in the imaginaries that are given shape by the reproductive projects and parental desires facilitated by the bio-medical techniques and practices of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) that involve selection and screening for disability. We investigate how some users of ARTs understand and deploy these imaginaries in ways that are both concordant with and resistant to the understanding of disability embedded within the broader sociotechnical and social imaginaries. It is through users’ deliberations, choices, responses, and expectations that we come to understand how these imaginaries are perpetuated and resisted, and how maintaining them …

Can Writing Be Wrong? Collaborative Autoethnography As Critical Reflective Practice In Sport, Exercise, And Performance Psychology, Sae-Mi Lee, Janaina Fogaca, Marlen Harrison Oct 2020

Can Writing Be Wrong? Collaborative Autoethnography As Critical Reflective Practice In Sport, Exercise, And Performance Psychology, Sae-Mi Lee, Janaina Fogaca, Marlen Harrison

The Qualitative Report

Critical reflective practice (CRP) facilitates macro-level reflections about social contexts and power structures through the interrogation of one’s own experiences (Knowles & Gilbourne, 2010). Despite the importance of CRP, examples of how one actually engages in CRP are scarce in sport psychology. Moreover, given that writing in academia is traditionally “author evacuated” (Knowles & Gilbourne, 2010, p. 512), it is questionable how traditional writing practices help facilitate critical reflections. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine how sport psychology professionals can engage in CRP through the use of author-centered writing. Specifically, we responded to Knowles and Gilbourne’s (2010) …

Among the major themes emerging from the qualitative analysis were JFK Jr.’s efforts to balance and integrate his public and private selves; navigating the Kennedy legacy and understanding his family’s place in political history; and establishing George magazine with …

I Am Not A Thief: Retelling My Story To Understand A Racist Encounter, Felicia Stewart Oct 2020

I Am Not A Thief: Retelling My Story To Understand A Racist Encounter, Felicia Stewart

The Qualitative Report

In the United States, acts of prejudice occur in many situations and spaces. Scholars and researchers hypothesize that these acts are often due to the racism that permeates our country. When seemingly racist acts occur, they are sometimes unreported, misunderstood or simply not addressed. As a Black woman falsely accused of theft, I endured assumptions made about me, and I made assumptions about my accuser. We are often left to speculate as to what fuels acts of racism, whether in the form of microaggressions or overt acts. As we try to assign reasons for others’ behaviors, we must also inspect …
