Using The Job Demands-Resources Model To Predict Burnout In Police Officers In The Uk And The Us, Jackie Keaton, Kristen J. Black, Jonathan Houdmont
Using The Job Demands-Resources Model To Predict Burnout In Police Officers In The Uk And The Us, Jackie Keaton, Kristen J. Black, Jonathan Houdmont
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
The Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model has been used in a number of research studies to predict burnout among human service professionals, including police officers. Rates of burnout among police officers can vary widely between countries and types of officers, which necessitates further exploration of the workplace stressors and conditions that impact how and why police officers experience burnout. In this study I will examine data from two samples of police officers, one from the United Kingdom and one from the United States, to explore if certain demands and resources have different weights in contributing to burnout for police officers in …
Re-Conceptualizing And Measuring Tacit Knowledge, Mariyam Sumaiya, Alexander Jackson, Ashley Pearson
Re-Conceptualizing And Measuring Tacit Knowledge, Mariyam Sumaiya, Alexander Jackson, Ashley Pearson
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
This paper proposes to develop a new measure of tacit knowledge based on an updated definition that distinguishes tacit knowledge and tacit skills which we build based on Taylor’s taxonomy (2007). Since tacit knowledge is domain specific, we also propose a new method of measuring tacit knowledge that can be replicated across domains. Additionally, we study the connection between tacit knowledge and mindfulness. This study occurs in two stages. The participants in the first stage will be subject matter experts in the field of research methodology. These individuals will receive a questionnaire seeking critical incidents based on their experiences, which …
Y'All Ain't Fair: Discrimination Against Southern Accents In Hiring Decisions, Brenna Armfield
Y'All Ain't Fair: Discrimination Against Southern Accents In Hiring Decisions, Brenna Armfield
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
This research proposal investigates how southern accents impact hiring decisions. Specifically, it examines whether an applicant with a neutral American accent will be hired at a higher rate than an applicant with a southern accent. Perceived professionalism, competence, and intelligence are suggested mediators for the relationship between accent and hiring decision. Additionally, it is hypothesized that perceived similarity and geographical location will moderate the relationship between accent and evaluations related to hiring (professionalism, competence, and intelligence). Participants will be sampled from a geographically diverse range of universities and randomly assigned to one of four conditions: female applicant with a neutral …
The Effects Of Covid-19 On Organizational Trust, Hannah Ferriell, Courtney Keim
The Effects Of Covid-19 On Organizational Trust, Hannah Ferriell, Courtney Keim
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
Organizational trust is vital to the psychological health of employees and is related to a myriad of benefits (job satisfaction, work engagement; Chughtai, Byrne, & Flood, 2015; Shockley-Zalabak, Ellis, & Winograd, 2000). Unfortunately, many employees do not trust their employers, which implies that the organizations for which those employees work may be missing out on the positive effects associated with trust (American Psychological Association, 2018). Organizational change can exacerbate feelings of distrust (Morgan & Zeffane, 2003). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations across the world are now having their employees work from home and are instituting new safety precautions, examples …
Workplace Telepressure And Workaholism: Ict Boundary Creation As A Potential Moderator, Emily Wilder, Shahnaz Aziz
Workplace Telepressure And Workaholism: Ict Boundary Creation As A Potential Moderator, Emily Wilder, Shahnaz Aziz
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
The goal of this study is to investigate the relationships between workplace telepressure, workaholism, and information and communication technology (ICT) boundary creation. Workaholism is the compulsive need to work incessantly (Oates, 1971). It has been linked with adverse effects such as work stress, sleep problems, burnout, physical complaints, and lower mental health (Andreassen et al., 2018; Clark et al., 2016). A work-related construct associated with similar negative outcomes (e.g., physical exhaustion, burnout, sleep problems, and poor work-life balance; Barber et al., 2019; Kao et al., 2020; Santuzzi & Barber, 2018) is workplace telepressure. Workplace telepressure is the urge and preoccupation …
Appraisal-Tendency Framework And Gender: A Moderator In The Emotions And Judgement Process, Sarah Tucker, Alexander T. Jackson, Satoris Howes, Kaitlyn Berry
Appraisal-Tendency Framework And Gender: A Moderator In The Emotions And Judgement Process, Sarah Tucker, Alexander T. Jackson, Satoris Howes, Kaitlyn Berry
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
The study aims to clarify and understand the role that gender has on perceptions of justice through placement of blame and emotion. The Appraisal Tendency Framework explains how emotion impacts judgements, and the fairness theory explores how blame placement affects perceptions of justice. This research explores the impact of gender on both models. This study will utilize a 2 (emotional induction) x 2 (gender of actor) design. In the emotional induction portion, participants will view clips from movies to induce either sadness or anger. Following the video clip, all participants will be asked to write about a time they either …
The Disgust Sensitivity Scale, Ivory Tran
The Disgust Sensitivity Scale, Ivory Tran
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
This study proposes a new measure of disgust sensitivity, specifically in four domains: core, animal-reminder, contamination-based, and moral-sexual disgust. The measure will be called the Disgust Sensitivity Scale (DSS). Previous measures have not been successful in showing an association between the moral-sexual disgust domain and overall disgust sensitivity. One of the suggested reasons is that moral and sexual transgressions often elicit a combination of anger and disgust rather than disgust alone. Thus, the current study attempts to measure moral-sexual disgust by designing test items that specifically target disgust as the elicited emotion. As the Disgust Scale – Revised (DS–R) is …
Terminal Logic Behavior And Strategic Defection Of Governmental Officials During Presidential Transitions In Guatemala: Implications For The Sustainability Of Food And Nutrition Security Policy, Jessica L. Escobar-Alegria, Edward A. Frongillo Jr., Christine E. Blake
Blake
Faculty Publications
Background: Presidents with no possibility of re-election overvalue far-future rewards and succumb to terminal logic behavior (TLB), responding to end-of-tenure legacy concerns despite political context. Government authorities perceiving the outgoing government is losing power at the end of term behave under the logic of strategic defection (SD), dissociating from the outgoing government once it is perceived powerless. In countries where re-election is impossible and government turnover and inconstant political parties are concerns, governmental officials at all levels may show TLB and SD during transitions that affect policy sustainability. Objectives: This study aimed to understand the context during presidential transitions that …

Understanding Efl Teachers’ Beliefs And Practices In Efl Classrooms: A Phenomenological Approach To The Impact Of Teacher Education Program In Bangladesh, Abdul Karim, Liza Reshmin, Muhammad Kamarul Kabilan, Faheem Hasan Shahed, Mohammad Mosiur Rahman, Manjet Kaur Mehar Singh
The Qualitative Report
The construction of teacher beliefs through teacher education programs and their impact on classroom practices has drawn enormous attention in the concurrent literature. Yet in Bangladesh, little is known about the construction of teacher beliefs through teacher education programs and the impact of teacher beliefs on their classroom practices. Pertinently, the current study aimed at answering the questions regarding teachers’ beliefs about teaching before and after the completion of the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) programs to identify the changing patterns of their beliefs. In addition, the study explored their classroom practices to examine whether teachers’ beliefs …

Linkedin For Searching Better Job Opportunity: Passive Jobseekers’ Perceived Experience, Md Sajjad Hosain, Ping Liu
The Qualitative Report
LinkedIn is a famous online social networking platform for the jobholders, jobseekers and employers although their purposes vary. Passive jobseekers are those who already have jobs but are searching for better alternatives. In this paper, we tried to identify the passive jobseekers’ perceived experience towards LinkedIn as a job searching platform. We used Focused Group Discussion (FGD) method to unmask the perception of 150 respondents from Bangladesh and India who use LinkedIn as professional social networking site frequently. After summarizing the FGD results, it was revealed that LinkedIn is the most preferred source of job search tool among the passive …

From Participants To Co-Researchers: Methodological Alterations To A Qualitative Case Study, Elizabeth M. Pope
The Qualitative Report
Researchers request a variety of levels of engagement from their participants in a research study. This can range from merely serving as a data generation opportunity to being actively involved in each stage of the project. The latter is a co-researcher. In this paper, I explore how nine participants in a qualitative case study became co-researchers by the study’s conclusion. The increase in their active participation required methodological alterations to the project while I conducted the study. This paper presents these alterations by examining: (1) my position as a researcher; (2) my relationship with the participants; (3) the trajectory of …

Posting a personal data information on social media can be easily done by anyone. These activities are easily found on the user's social media profile page, which is not uncommon to contain personal information. This is coupled with the possibility of security gaps in social media services, can be utilized for various purposes, and by anyone, including other users and service providers themselves. On the other hand, regulations and policies regarding personal data information, have not been clearly regulated in Indonesia. By using a qualitative approach, this research aims to determine the stage of the user consciousness related to personal …

KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
This study extends the body of literature concerning security compliance by investigating the antecedents of HIPPA security compliance. A conceptual model, specifying a set of hypothesized relationships between management support, security awareness, security culture; security behavior, and risk of sanctions to address their effect on HIPAA security compliance is presented. This model was developed based on the review of the literature, Protection Motivation Theory, and General Deterrence Theory. Specifically, the aim of the study is to examine the mediating role of risk of sanctions on HIPAA security compliance.

Towards An Assessment Of Pause Periods On User Habituation In Mitigation Of Phishing Attacks, Amy Antonucci, Yair Levy, Martha Snyder, Laurie Dringus
KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Social engineering is the technique in which the attacker sends messages to build a relationship with the victim and convinces the victim to take some actions that lead to significant damages and losses. Industry and law enforcement reports indicate that social engineering incidents costs organizations billions of dollars. Phishing is the most pervasive social engineering attack. While email filtering and warning messages have been implemented for over three decades, organizations are constantly falling for phishing attacks. Prior research indicated that attackers use phishing emails to create an urgency and fear response in their victims causing them to use quick heuristics, …

Towards An Assessment Of Judgment Errors In Social Engineering Attacks Due To Environment And Device Type, Tommy Pollock, Yair Levy, Wei Li, Ajoy Kumar
KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Phishing continues to be a significant invasive threat to computer and mobile device users. Cybercriminals continuously develop new phishing schemes using email, and malicious search engine links to gather personal information of unsuspecting users. This information is used for financial gains through identity theft schemes or draining financial accounts of victims. Users are often distracted and fail to fully process the phishing attacks then unknowingly fall victim to the scam until much later. Users operating mobile phones and computers are likely to make judgment errors when making decisions in distracting environments due to cognitive overload. Distracted users can fail to …
Etic Vs. Emic Values In The Culture Of Forensics, Richard E. Paine
Etic Vs. Emic Values In The Culture Of Forensics, Richard E. Paine
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
The present essay is a very preliminary attempt at investigating the extremely broad topic of values in forensics. Its goal is twofold: first, to identify values as they are avowed and practiced on the emic level by the forensics community; and second, to begin considering how forensic values do or do not mesh with the values espoused by some of the other emic and etic communities forensics participates in. It is my hope that this brief introduction to the question can open the door to more detailed and incisive qualitative and quantitative research into some of the particular issues whose …

The Emperor Has No Clothes: Solidifying Inconsistencies In Judges' Preference, Anthony C. Cavaiani, David J. Nadolski
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
Several leaders representing the forensics world were surveyed to examine the role judges preference plays in the outcomes of forensics tournaments. Similarities and differences concerning the definition of judge's preference emerged as dominant themes. Implications of this study offer new questions concerning definitions of judge’s preference and the role tabulation should play in the formation of leaders in forensics.
A Christian Ethic For Coaches, George Lamaster
A Christian Ethic For Coaches, George Lamaster
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
Coaching is a calling and ministry. At least for many in the Christian tradition, that‘s true. Be they little-league coaches, birthing coaches, or executive coaches, coaches often view their work as a sacred vocation. While in seminary, I moonlighted as a speech and debate coach at a state university. I quickly discovered that my so-called secular work transformed lives as surely as youth ministry in the local parish. Whether it occurs in the context of the church or the public sphere, the practice of coaching invites sacramental moments of transformation by grace.
What follows is my attempt to think theologically …

The ‘Dark Power’ Of Instagram: Prospects And Threats For Tourism Organisations, Nicola Capolupo, Valerio Giampaola, Gabriella Piscopo
The ‘Dark Power’ Of Instagram: Prospects And Threats For Tourism Organisations, Nicola Capolupo, Valerio Giampaola, Gabriella Piscopo
International Journal of Islands Research
The key to understand and analyse the dynamic relationship between territories, organisations and tourists is currently undergoing significant changes. Due to both their endogenous and exogenous factors, territories should be read as complex adaptive systems (CAS), i.e. systems structurally composed of different sub-systems which interact with each other and help to improve the central systems thanks to the interconnections established among themselves. Thus, in this scenario, territories evolve into potential tourism destinations if these changes make them particularly attractive and capable of setting a profitable dialogue with new emerging tourists profiles. As a matter of fact, contexts and in which …
Competitive Intelligence For Insular Territories, Pierre Fournié, Henri Dou
Competitive Intelligence For Insular Territories, Pierre Fournié, Henri Dou
International Journal of Islands Research
For centuries, the intrinsic and ubiquitous parameters of insular territories have governed social, economic and political life within the island and with outer territories. Besides some biological and physical determinism, there exists a psychological factor that conducts islanders to feel that they possess a rich and a unique identity (Gombaud, 2007:593). Nowadays, islands are impacted by communication technologies and globalization, international law and politics. The opening to tourism, international trade and foreign capital, modifies the usual landmarks and often means that traditional activities and know-how are abandoned. Historically located at the periphery, islands suddenly appear at the centre of multiple …
Developing Island Identities Through Citizen Approaches? The Contribution Of Cultural Rights Exploratory Approach By Two Islands In Brittany, Leila Damak, Danielle Pailler
Developing Island Identities Through Citizen Approaches? The Contribution Of Cultural Rights Exploratory Approach By Two Islands In Brittany, Leila Damak, Danielle Pailler
International Journal of Islands Research
The identity of insular territories is generally built from top-down and ‘institutionalised’ political logics. However, in the challenge for differentiation between territories and islands, these approaches have their limits. It appears necessary to coordinate external economic and tourism development issues with local territorial issues, by identifying cultural resources as understood by cultural rights. To deploy a renewed island territorial marketing, would be a question of implementing participatory projects and methodologies to meet the following challenges: How to create a common culture? How to promote citizen tourism? How to reveal the identities involved? Our research proposes to analyse the challenges of …
