Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Prisons serve as a place where criminal behaviors are suppressed. The need for these set of individuals to gather skills which help them remain positive right in the four walls of the prison yard and after serving their jail terms cannot be overemphasized. It is for this reason that the team set out to develop a programme aimed at inculcating literacy and creative writing skills that will help them participate more effectively when they finish their jail term. The aim of the study was to explore the importance and contributions of library resources and services to the lives of prison …

Fisher's Narrative Paradigm Theory: A Model For Differentiating After Dinner Speaking From Informative And Persuasive Speaking, C. Thomas Preston Jr.
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
As Schnoor and Karns (1992) have noted, a great spirit of camaraderie and cooperation existed after the Second Developmental Conference on Individual Events concerning the direction of events (pp. 13-16). One of the questions posed at this conference, the authors note, was how to improve the original speaking events. At this the Third Developmental Conference, we ask the question, "How do we discover effective new directions in the original speaking events?" Today, my paper will assess both tried and innovative new directions in after dinner speaking, with a discussion of the other original speaking events as necessary for background material. …
Teaching And Coaching Individuals: The Use Of Learning Styles In Forensics Coaching, Thomas Bartl
Teaching And Coaching Individuals: The Use Of Learning Styles In Forensics Coaching, Thomas Bartl
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
When I ask myself how to approach the issue of training coaches in competitive speech and debate, I find myself posing a different question. It seems that before I can ascertain what could or should be done to train coaches effectively or to train effective coaches I need to know what it is these coaches are expected to do. The answer to this question must then determine what kind of training would be appropriate.
Presumption In Parliamentary Debate: Examining Whately's Ideas And Their Application To An Emerging And Evolving Debate Style, Tammy Duvanel Unruh
Presumption In Parliamentary Debate: Examining Whately's Ideas And Their Application To An Emerging And Evolving Debate Style, Tammy Duvanel Unruh
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
Presumption as a part of formal debate is examined in this paper, which discusses Richard Whately's ideas about presumption and burden of proof in argumentation, how these ideas have been applied as paradigms and judging criteria in competitive debate, and how these same ideas fit into the practice of parliamentary debate. General conclusions about broad applications of debate "rules" are drawn, then, from this example, and suggestions are made for future study.
Forensics Fellows: Integrating Faculty Participation Into Intercollegiate Parliamentary Debate Programs, Lewis E. Rutledge
Forensics Fellows: Integrating Faculty Participation Into Intercollegiate Parliamentary Debate Programs, Lewis E. Rutledge
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
There are important benefits to integrating non-forensics faculty into assisting with the instruction and training of intercollegiate parliamentary debaters. These benefits may also spill over into individual events in a limited way. Parliamentary debate, if done well, requires that debaters have a broad based education covering many diverse disciplines, especially philosophy, history and political science, and of course a familiarity with current national and international events. Enlisting the aid of non-forensics professors from various departments to provide occasional mini-lectures on diverse topics can help improve this broad-based education. Additionally, there are other unique benefits to encouraging non-forensics faculty members to …

Burnout: Why Are Teacher Educators Reaching Their Limits?, Tiffany Coyle, Erica V. Miller, Christa Rivera Cotto
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
Burnout among our P-12 teachers has been well documented throughout the years. Yet, little research has been conducted into the burnout of higher education professionals in general. Lackritz (2004) found that emotional exhaustion is significantly and positively related to teaching load, grading, office hours, grant money, service time, and number of service activities. This research looks further into the variables that may impact burnout for higher education faculty, specifically in teacher education, seeking to answer the questions: Are teacher educators in NY experiencing stress/burnout? If so, what internal and/or external factors/conditions are contributing to their burnout? And are specific groups …
Assessment Of Pre-Service Teacher Dispositions, Elizabeth Bradley, Patricia Isaac, Joseph King
Assessment Of Pre-Service Teacher Dispositions, Elizabeth Bradley, Patricia Isaac, Joseph King
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
Measurement of pre-service teacher dispositions is an important part of teacher preparation programs. A strong correlation exists between dispositions of teachers and the quality of their student’s learning. Teachers, in addition to sharing content knowledge, are responsible for demonstrating and sharing core values relating to virtues such as honesty, justice, fairness, care, empathy, integrity, courage, respect, and responsibility, and these values must guide their own conduct and interpersonal relations. As teachers serve pupils who are minors, their conduct and potential to serve effectively and ethically in the profession must be evaluated. However, a thorough faculty-led instrument to assess pre-service teacher …
Teacher Candidates And The Open Classroom: Concerns For Professional Growth, Safety, And Collaboration, Adam Huck
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
Environmental factors, personal experience, and social interactions influence the development of teacher candidates’ views of teachers’ roles in school and society (Rose, Monda-Amaya, & Preast, 2018). This is especially true when we consider the unique needs of each generation of teachers. Ecological systems theory and social cognitive theory frame this study as teacher candidates are the product of their personal experiences and social interactions within an education system that must respond to evolving societal needs.
This paper presents a descriptive analysis of two sections of a literacy methods course through the study of reflection journals, survey data, and exit interviews. …

An Embodied Spiritual Inquiry Into The Nature Of Human Boundaries: Outcomes Of A Participatory Approach To Transpersonal Education And Research, Olga R. Sohmer, Ross C. Baumann, Jorge N. Ferrer
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
Embodied spiritual inquiry (ESI) is a radical approach to integral and transpersonal education and research offered as a graduate course at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). Inspired by elements of participatory research and cooperative inquiry, ESI applies interactive embodied meditations to access multiple ways of knowing (e.g., somatic, vital, emotional, mental, contemplative) and mindfully inquire into collaboratively decided questions. This article presents the learning outcomes of an inquiry into the nature of human boundaries within and between co-inquirers, providing an example of how ESI is implemented in the classroom and can be used to study transpersonal subject …

Significant Features Of The Structure Of Emotional Sentences, Gulrukh Shavkatovna Qakhkhorova, Iroda Sidikovna Qakhkharova
Scientific reports of Bukhara State University
Emotional speech, linguistic, logical, and spiritual activities are interconnected, reflecting the process of speaking in a specific way, which again proves that language is not only a means of moving the mind but also affecting the spirit. In this sense, linguistic emotion is recognized as one of the distinctive linguistic structures of speech. Emotional sentence is primarily a linguistic activity and its product. The emotional and psychosocial factors are also influenced by the emotional expression of psychology (which represents different mental emotions of a person), sociological (which can be a form of social communication, a means of interpersonal communication). The …

College of Health Professions Faculty Papers
Background and Objectives: In the absence of effective pharmacotherapy, there is an urgent need to test evidence-based dementia care interventions using pragmatic trial approaches. We present results from a study in which an evidence-based, nonpharmacologic intervention for persons living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) and their informal caregivers, Care of Persons with Dementia in their Environments (COPE), was tested in a Medicaid and state revenue-funded home and community-based service (HCBS) program.
Research Design and Methods: Using pragmatic trial design strategies, persons living with ADRD and their caregivers were randomly assigned as dyads to receive COPE plus usual HCBS …

A Study On The Effectiveness Of Sensory Branding In Cafe Coffee Day Outlets In Coimbatore, R V. Rupini
Health Sciences
The purpose of the study was: (1) to develop a reliable and valid scale and model for sensory experience, (2) to empirically test the model using Roberts’ (2004) love marks theory by examining the effect of the two brand image dimensions on the love mark experience (brand love and brand respect) and, (3) to examine the relationship among brand loyalty, brand trust, and overall brand equity. The empirical results show that the model is found to be fit and the hypotheses are significant and the variables have a strong correlation with one another.

Mestizaje/Hybridity (Mesti-Bridity) As Struggle, Contest And Subversion In Plácido (1982) By Gerardo Fulleda León, Darrelstan Fitzwarren Ferguson
PALARA: Publication of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association
The major objective of this paper is to investigate the extent to which the author, Gerardo Fulleda León, problematises the concept of hybridity in his 1989 dramatic work, Plácido. It aims to identify the different ways in which race, class, nationhood, and even gender, all come to figure nineteenth-century Cuba as a hybrid state enduring struggle and contest. It uses Homi K. Bhabha's understanding of hybridity as a "third space" that constantly dialogues and clashes with its constituent selves, alongside Peter Wade's similar reasoning of the term as precisely a process of "struggle and contest". It finds that Fulleda …

Milwaukee Progress Update- Identifying Barriers & Working Through Solutions, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
Other QIC-WD Products
Staff voice is an important element of organizational culture, or the behavioral norms and expectations that characterize a work environment. According to the developers of the Availability Responsiveness Continuity (ARC) model, these norms and expectations direct the way employees in a particular work environment approach their work, specify priorities, and shape the way work is done. The Division of Milwaukee Child Protective Services (DMCPS) is a child welfare agency that experienced significant leadership change in recent years and, like other agencies nationwide, has struggled with a decade of staff turnover. In partnership with the Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development …
