Researchers in this qualitative study interviewed a mix of 14 African students and alumni on their doctoral experience. Interviews included questions on what motivated them, the challenges they faced, and suggestions for future students. Data were collected via telephone interview and transcriptions were analyzed inductively using the In Vivo method. Key findings included a need for better financial assistance, improved technology access and targeted support. Learning preferences identified were spread across a variety of modalities. Specific aspects of the academic residency experience were identified as essential for progress and completion. Participants also provided several recommendations to support international students’ success. …

Middle school reading scores throughout the state of California have been predominantly less than average in recent years. An unknown problem existed that stems from the implementation of reading programs at the middle school level. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the level of fidelity to a reading program at a local school. Six teachers participated in the investigation. Six themes were identified during the implementation of the reading program. The results of the study lead to social change because it provides an opportunity for community programs, school programs, and social programs to be implemented with high fidelity. …

Relationship Between Parental Involvement And 4th-5th Grade Students’ Academic Motivation, Charla D. Williams

Research has addressed the impact of parental involvement among students. However, there is minimal information on how parental involvement affects racially and ethnically diverse students. Findings indicated no significant difference between parents’ and students’ perceptions of parental involvement in seven of nine domains. Seven of nine domains of parental involvement predicted student academic motivation. Gender was not a significant moderator. Findings may be used by educators to promote certain types of parental involvement to enhance students’ academic motivation and parent-child relationships.

Meat-Eating Justification And Relationship Closeness With Vegetarian Family, Friends, And Romantic Partners, Amy D. Vandehei

Vegetarians/vegans report negative reactions upon disclosing their diets. Meat-eating justification beliefs were hypothesized to relate to negative responses and relationship closeness. Surveys were completed by 190 omnivores (who had vegetarian/vegan relationships). Results showed that denial and dissociation justifications significantly predicted lower closeness. Hierarchical justification significantly predicted higher closeness. Results showed significantly higher closeness (frequency, diversity) before diet change. Strength of influence significantly increased after diet change. A significant interaction showed frequency was significantly lower after diet change for friends and family members, but significantly higher for romantic relationships. The findings may aid in developing therapeutic interventions leading to strengthened relationships. …

The federal government has implemented laws, policies, and programs to protect and promote women and minorities. African American women, having both gender and racial disadvantages, are not prototypical of either women or minorities, in general, which presents the unique challenge of “double jeopardy.” Framed by Black feminist thought, this phenomenological study explored how intersectionality shaped African American women’s perceptions about gender-based mentoring. Data were collected through focus groups. Results centered on the (a) significance of intersectionality, (b) difficulty with mentoring relationships, and (c) organizational barriers. Recommendations had implications for social change regarding inclusion and equity, and employee and organizational development. …

Through this research study, I addressed a gap in the literature by examining the relation between client and therapist TA ratings in a population of civilly-confined sexual offenders who have been assigned to either low or high psychopathy treatment groups. The goal was to examine the relation between TA and psychopathy in this population. The purpose of this quantitative survey study was to examine the association of psychopathy and the TA in a group of male mandated therapy clients who have been convicted of sexual assault, served time and are in civil confinement.

Mandates and regulations from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) have caused extreme reforms to take effect in the NCAA’s education system. However, little is known about how these reforms have impacted student-athletes. The purpose of this study was to explore how Division II football players from public colleges and universities view their ability to balance their education and athletics. Findings revealed participants’ limited understanding of NCAA rules and a need for more clearly defined and standard policies. Findings may help create legislation to involve the federal government in overseeing NCAA policies to support the educational needs of student-athletes.

Loneliness, Prosocial Relationships, And Recidivism In Long-Term Incarcerated Juveniles, Amy R. Jozan

Lengthy juvenile facility placement has resulted in deterioration of important prosocial supports and social isolation, increasing risk for recidivism. Lengthy juvenile incarceration impacts on loneliness, post-release prosocial relationships, and desistance implications have been investigated utilizing interpretative phenomenological analysis. Social maladaptation, institutionalization, stigmatization, identifying with prosocial support, antisocial peer dissociation, and loneliness were six overarching themes discovered. Recommendations for future research efforts and proactively addressing youth maladaptation with relatable prosocial supports will be discussed. Implications for practice may be used to promote positive social change towards improving public safety, mitigating recidivism, and avoiding negative transgenerational effects from mass incarceration.

Leadership identity is the most critical challenge for mental health counseling students. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) does not mandate courses in leadership development. This quantitative study investigated master’s level mental health counselor student leadership identity and factors for pursuing a doctoral degree. Results indicated that the variable gender predicted socially responsible leadership yet did not predict intent to pursue a doctoral degree. Based on these results, master’s level counseling students could benefit from leadership curriculum as preparation for leadership positions within the field and influence pursuance of higher learning.

Current research suggests that preschool teachers lack the content knowledge in phonemic awareness for ensuring the development of young children’s early literacy skills. This exploratory study examined the relationship between preschool teachers’ content knowledge in early literacy, education level, and years of teaching experience to emergent literacy assessment; and if differences in students’ emergent literacy assessment across different preschool program settings was significant. Results from a multiple regression analysis indicated the findings were not significant. The United States has yet to reach the top international ranking in college degree attainment among young adults. The study explored which Reiss basic desires of motivation predict undergraduate academic achievement. The bivariate ordinal logistic regression results indicated a significant relationship between four motivational factors (curiosity, order, status, and vengeance) and cumulative GPA. The multivariate ordinal logistic regression results indicated a significant relationship between three motivational factors (order, vengeance, and physical exercise) and cumulative GPA, but not between gender, age, and cumulative GPA. American Indian obesity rates exceed other ethnicities. This cross-sectional study examined cooking techniques and meal preparation self-efficacy (CTMP), negative cooking attitude, eating and cooking with fruits and vegetables self-efficacy, health value, and perceived severity, susceptibility, barriers, and benefits on body mass index (BMI) for 90 Arizona American Indians. Participants self-reported height and weight and completed the Cooking with a Chef Evaluation Instrument and Health Belief Model Scale in Obesity. This study captured the various mental health impacts among youth, younger adults, and older adults in the LGBTQI community. The LGBTQI community embodies a diverse set of subgroups that includes youth, younger adults, and older adults. Many in the LGBTQI community face prejudice, discrimination, harassment, and even rejection from family members. Youth and younger adults in LGBTQI communities are often victims of school violence, as well as intimate partner violence, and typically show signs of psychosocial adjustment disorder and psychological distress. Grounded in Fiedler’s contingency theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the innovative green strategies implemented by construction business leaders to increase organizational performance. Five themes emerged from the findings of the research: innovative research and design, collaboration, leader involvement, education, and marketing. However, there is not enough focus on the contribution of pharmacists towards promotion of lifestyle modification (PLM) in the management of hypertension in Nigeria. Thematic data analysis in a phenomenological study conducted revealed an overarching theme stating that the roles and practice of PLM by community pharmacists among hypertensive adults is influenced by cognitive factors, pharmacy school training, agency (self-efficacy and patient factors), and social structure (stakeholders and environmental factors).
