The Effect Of School Discipline Processes On Student Perceptions Of Personal Safety In Rural Middle Schools, Jaslene Atwal Nov 2020

The Effect Of School Discipline Processes On Student Perceptions Of Personal Safety In Rural Middle Schools, Jaslene Atwal

All Theses And Dissertations

There is a need to clearly communicate expectations and consequences of misconduct to deter students from engaging in negative behaviors that create a physically or psychologically unsafe learning environment at school. A poor school climate has been found to have a detrimental effect on student achievement. A positive learning environment can transform negative situations into positive ones and have a beneficial effect on student behavior and achievement. This study explored the effect of a proactive discipline program on students’ perceptions of their physical and psychological safety in rural middle schools. The research questions for this study asked what factors most …

A Broad Overview Of Solution Focused Severe Trauma & Stress Recovery Work, With The Introduction Of Two Additional Sf Instruments To Promote Thriverhood, John Henden

Journal of Solution Focused Practices

The purpose of this paper is to show how the author’s solution focused (SF) work with both adult survivors of child abuse and neglect; and, adult trauma survivors, has developed from Yvonne Dolan’s severe trauma recovery work (Dolan, 1998). Dolan’s major contribution to this way of working is acknowledged; and, her three-stage Victim – Survivor –Thriver continuum detailed, with an emphasis on the Thriver stage. Other contemporary practitioners’ work is described, in brief, also. From the author’s clinical work with survivors of trauma, over some 25 years, it has become clear that clients need to understand more fully what thriverhood …

Evaluating The Solution Focused Wellness For Hiv Intervention For Women: A Pilot Study, Helen T. Yates, Orion Mowbray Nov 2020

Evaluating The Solution Focused Wellness For Hiv Intervention For Women: A Pilot Study, Helen T. Yates, Orion Mowbray

Journal of Solution Focused Practices

Women living with HIV experience a gender gap in wellness outcomes in the U.S., and women of color are particularly vulnerable to this gap. To address this, the Solution Focused Wellness for HIV (SFWH) intervention for women was created. In this paper, we report the quantitative results of the most recent SFWH pilot study. The seven-session, group intervention was provided to (N=14) women living with HIV to evaluate it for effectiveness. Results showed the intervention was associated with significant multidimensional wellness improvements between baseline and five-week follow up. Participants’ CD4 and Viral Load counts did not change significantly. To improve …

Steve De Shazer’S Theory Development, Harry Korman, Peter De Jong, Sara Smock Jordan Nov 2020

Steve De Shazer’S Theory Development, Harry Korman, Peter De Jong, Sara Smock Jordan

Journal of Solution Focused Practices

This paper traces developments in Steve de Shazer’s theoretical thinking from 1969 until his passing in 2005. After reviewing his definition of “theory,” we organize developments in his theorizing into 4 phases, distilling from each the axioms he continued to hold until his death. For each axiom, we indicate how it is foundational to an understanding of SFBT and, therefore, contributes to distinguishing SFBT from other talk therapies. We stay close to de Shazer’s writings by frequently quoting from his many articles and 6 books. We conclude with a summary of what we believe are the 6 enduring axioms of …

My Education Plan: A Teaching Mindset, Joseph Van Zante Nov 2020

My Education Plan: A Teaching Mindset, Joseph Van Zante

Honors Program Theses

The reason that I became a teacher was to help students achieve their full potential. Other people become teachers because they have a passion for working with young kids and seeing them grow. No matter the person and why they became a teacher, they still need to have a plan for how they want to teach. They have to decide what type of teacher they are going to be, how they are going to grade papers, and how much homework to assign. Then over the course of their teaching career they develop and change as a teacher. They learn new …

Enterprise Architecture Transformation Process From A Federal Government Perspective, Tonia Canada, Leila Halawi Nov 2020

Enterprise Architecture Transformation Process From A Federal Government Perspective, Tonia Canada, Leila Halawi

Publications

The need for information technology organizations to transform enterprise architecture is driven by federal government mandates and information technology budget constraints. This qualitative case study aimed to identify factors that hinder federal government agencies from driving enterprise architecture transformation processes from a compliancy to a flexible process. Common themes in interviewee responses were identified, coded, and summarized. Critical recommendations for future best practices, including further research, were also presented.

Effects Of Employee Personality On The Relationships Between Experienced Incivility, Emotional Exhaustion, And Perpetrated Incivility, Jennifer L. Welbourne, Gerardo A. Miranda, Ashwini Gangadharan Nov 2020

Effects Of Employee Personality On The Relationships Between Experienced Incivility, Emotional Exhaustion, And Perpetrated Incivility, Jennifer L. Welbourne, Gerardo A. Miranda, Ashwini Gangadharan

Management Faculty Publications

Workplace incivility refers to low-intensity negative behaviors that violate workplace norms of respect. Incivility is known to be a type of stressor in the workplace, with recent research drawing attention to how it may differentially affect employees with varying personality traits. Drawing from a stressor–strain theoretical framework, we examined the moderating effects of four of the Big Five personality traits (agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and extraversion) on the relationship between individuals’ experienced incivility and their subsequent emotional exhaustion and perpetrated incivility toward others in the organization. Results from a 2-wave survey of 252 working adults indicate that personality traits moderated the …

Life On Death Row, Gordon A. Crews, Stephen C. Stanko, Garrison A. Crews, Luzenski A. Cottrell

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the general conditions for those living on death row in the United States. This examination involves the various restrictions of freedom outside of cell, size and conditions in cells, allowances on personal property, and limits on food and recreation. Special attention is given to discussing the unique relationships that often develop between correctional officers and death row inmates. These relationships are explored through the phenomena of “Hustling” (i.e., any actions taken by an inmate to generate revenue, power, or control over their environment). This type of behavior often is used as …

Personnel Selection: A Longstanding Story Of Impact At The Individual, Firm, And Societal Level, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett, Charlene Zhang Nov 2020

Personnel Selection: A Longstanding Story Of Impact At The Individual, Firm, And Societal Level, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett, Charlene Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper discusses how and why the field of personnel selection has made a long-lasting mark in work and organizational psychology. We start by outlining the importance and relevance of the well-established analytical framework (criterion-related validity, incremental validity, utility) for examining the impact of selection at the individual (job performance) level. We also document the substantive criterion-related validities of most common selection procedures on the basis of cumulative meta-analytic research. Next, we review more recent research that investigated the impact of selection at the more macro organizational (firm performance) level. We show that the positive relationship between selection and performance …

The Swiss In The Swabian War Of 1499: An Analysis Of The Swiss Military At The End Of The Fifteenth Century, Albert Winkler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

By the end of the fifteenth century, the states of the Swiss Confederation had enjoyed almost complete autonomy from the neighboring feudal powers for generations. During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the states of the Swiss Confederation were beset by external threats to their security, independence, and existence. The largest single menace to Swiss independence was the Habsburg family who often controlled their lands according to monarchal authority and a social structure which kept their subject peoples as unfree serfs.

In Defense Of Immutability, Nicholas Serafin Nov 2020

In Defense Of Immutability, Nicholas Serafin

BYU Law Review

Over the last forty years, the concept of immutability has been central to Equal Protection doctrine. According to current doctrine, a trait is immutable if it is beyond the power of an individual to change or if it is fundamental to personal identity. A trait that meets either of these criteria receives heightened legal protection under constitutional antidiscrimination law. Yet most legal scholars who have addressed the topic have called for the abandonment of the immutability criterion on the grounds that the immutability criterion is conceptually confused, morally indefensible, and bound to stigmatize subordinate groups.

A rejection of the immutability …

Debunking Intellectual Property Myths: Cross Cultural Experiments On Perceptions Of Property, Gregory N. Mandel, Kristina R. Olson, Anne A. Fast Nov 2020

Debunking Intellectual Property Myths: Cross Cultural Experiments On Perceptions Of Property, Gregory N. Mandel, Kristina R. Olson, Anne A. Fast

BYU Law Review

For decades, the prevailing view in the United States and many Western countries has been that China does not appropriately respect intellectual property rights. These beliefs lie at the heart of President Donald Trump’s current trade war with China. Despite substantial geopolitical debate over differences between American an d Chinese attitudes towards intellectual property rights, and despite the critical effects that such attitudes have on international economic markets and the function of intellectual property systems, empirical evidence of these attitudes is largely lacking. This Article presents original experimental survey research that explores cross cross-cultural differences between American and Chinese attitudes …

Free Speech, Rational Deliberation, And Some Truths About Lies, Alan K. Chen Nov 2020

Free Speech, Rational Deliberation, And Some Truths About Lies, Alan K. Chen

William & Mary Law Review

Could “fake news” have First Amendment value? This claim would seem to be almost frivolous given the potential for fake news to undermine two core functions of the freedom of speech—promoting democracy and facilitating the search for “truth,” as well as the corollary that to be valuable, speech must promote rational deliberation. Some would therefore claim that fake news should be classified as “no value” speech falling outside of the First Amendment’s reach. This Article argues somewhat counterintuitively that fake news has value because speech doctrine should not be focused exclusively on the promotion of rational deliberation, but should also …

Reliability And Validity Of The Rs14 In Orphaned And Separated Adolescents And Youths In Western Kenya, Sarah C. Sutherland, Harry S. Shannon, David Ayuku, David L. Streiner, Olli Saarela, Lukoye Atwoli, Paula Braitstein Nov 2020

Reliability And Validity Of The Rs14 In Orphaned And Separated Adolescents And Youths In Western Kenya, Sarah C. Sutherland, Harry S. Shannon, David Ayuku, David L. Streiner, Olli Saarela, Lukoye Atwoli, Paula Braitstein

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Purpose: The 14-item Resilience Scale (RS14) is a tool designed to measure psychological resilience. It has been used effectively in diverse populations. However, its applicability is largely unknown for Sub-Saharan adolescent populations and completely unknown for orphaned and separated adolescents and youths (OSAY), a highly vulnerable population for whom resilience may be critical. This study assesses the RS14's psychometric properties for OSAY in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya.

Methods: Survey responses from a representative sample of 1016 OSAY (51.3% female) aged 10-25 (mean = 16; SD = 3.5) living in institutional and home-based environments in Uasin Gishu County were analyzed. The …

Characterizing Prenatal Maternal Distress With Unique Prenatal Cortisol Trajectories, Gage Peterson, Emma V. Espel, Elyssia Poggi Davis, Curt A. Sandman, Laura M. Glynn Nov 2020

Characterizing Prenatal Maternal Distress With Unique Prenatal Cortisol Trajectories, Gage Peterson, Emma V. Espel, Elyssia Poggi Davis, Curt A. Sandman, Laura M. Glynn

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Objective: It is widely assumed that glucocorticoids represent a primary mechanism through which exposure to adversity and maternal psychological distress shape prenatal developmental trajectories of both mother and fetus. However, despite repeated investigations and the fact that prenatal cortisol has been reliably linked to developmental outcomes, the empirical evidence supporting an association between prenatal cortisol and maternal distress is scarce. In this study, a novel approach to assessing links between maternal prenatal psychological distress and gestational cortisol profiles, general growth mixture modeling (GGMM), was applied. Method: Measures of pregnancy anxiety, perceived stress, and state anxiety and depressive symptoms as well …

Politics, Identity, And Class Certification On The U.S. Courts Of Appeals, Stephen B. Burbank, Sean Farhang

Michigan Law Review

This Article draws on novel data and presents the results of the first empirical analysis of how potentially salient characteristics of Court of Appeals judges influence class certification under Rule 23 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. We find that the ideological composition of the panel (measured by the party of the appointing president) has a very strong association with certification outcomes, with all-Democratic panels having dramatically higher rates of procertification outcomes than all-Republican panels—nearly triple in about the past twenty years. We also find that the presence of one African American on a panel, and the presence of …

Childhood Medulloblastoma, Naureen Mushtaq, Shahzadi Resham, Muhammad Shahzad Shamim, Bilal Mazhar Qureshi, Quratulain Riaz, Eric Bouffet

Section of Haematology/Oncology

Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumour in children and is a major cause of mortality and morbidity, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It has been risk-stratified on the basis of clinical (age, metastasis and extent of resection) and histological subtypes (classic, desmoplastic and anaplastic). However, recently medulloblastoma has been sub-grouped by using a variety of different genomic approaches, such as gene expression profiling, micro-ribonucleic acid profiling and methylation array into 4 groups, namely Wingless, Sonic hedgehog, Group 3 and Group 4. This new sub-grouping has important therapeutic and prognostic implications. After acute leukaemia, brain tumour is the …
