Mitigating Versus Managing Epistemic And Aleatory Uncertainty, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark Nov 2020

Mitigating Versus Managing Epistemic And Aleatory Uncertainty, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark

Marketing and Management Faculty Publications

We are grateful for Holmes and Westgren’s (2020) thoughtful response to our recent article (Packard & 872 Academy of Management Review October Clark, 2020a). In it, they argued that “a mitigability– immitigability axis does not map well onto the aleatory–epistemic uncertainty axis” (p. 7). This challenge to our delineation casts doubt to its usefulness in strategic theorizing, as we have supposed. They thus proposed a revision to our definitions that encapsulates epistemic uncertainty within the confines of the present state of knowledge and the costs of acquiring such knowledge, allowing strategic analysis of the value of mitigation efforts to be …

On Mitigability Of Uncertainty And The Choice Between Predictive And Nonpredictive Strategy, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark Nov 2020

On Mitigability Of Uncertainty And The Choice Between Predictive And Nonpredictive Strategy, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark

Marketing and Management Faculty Publications

Managers face a critical issue in deciding when to employ a predictive planning approach versus a more adaptive and flexible strategic approach. We suggest that determiningwhich approach is ideal for a given context hangs on the extent to which uncertainty is, or might be, mitigable within that context. To date, however, the mitigability of uncertainty has not been adequately distilled. Here, we take on this issue, distinguishing mitigable ignorance of pertinent but knowable information (i.e., “epistemic uncertainty”) from immitigable indeterminacy (i.e., “aleatory uncertainty”). We review the current state of the debate on the existence of free will, because the acceptance or …

The Life-Saving Drug That No One Knows About: Naloxone Education And The Health Belief Model, Sarah Tilford Nov 2020

The Life-Saving Drug That No One Knows About: Naloxone Education And The Health Belief Model, Sarah Tilford

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Naloxone hydrochloride, popularly known by the brand name Narcan, is an emergency treatment used to reverse an overdose on opioid drugs. The CDC reports upwards of 26,000 individuals saved by naloxone between 1996 and 2014 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). Despite this success rate, those outside of the medical field largely remain unaware of what naloxone is or how they can use it in an emergency, leading to needless loss of life. Many studies focusing on naloxone access and education have been unable to offer findings meant to increase the use and ownership of the drug by lay …

Peace At Last Or Just A Piece Of Paper? Assessing The Utilization Of Civil Protection Orders And Reported Violations, Jennifer Medel Nov 2020

Peace At Last Or Just A Piece Of Paper? Assessing The Utilization Of Civil Protection Orders And Reported Violations, Jennifer Medel

Dissertations

Over the past 50 years, attention to domestic violence as a social problem has grown substantially. With this heightened interest, remedies available to survivors have evolved in both scope and access. One popular avenue of help-seeking concerns civil protection orders (POs), which attempt to prevent subsequent abuse by setting conditions that regulate future interaction between abusers and survivors. Abusers, unfortunately, often violate POs with estimates of cases with violations ranging from 40 to 60%. Relatively little research, however, has examined the nature and determinants of PO violations using court records.

This dissertation addresses these little-studied issues by exploring variations in …

Uncertainty In The Context Of End-Of-Life Communication In Heart Failure, Caleb Pardue Nov 2020

Uncertainty In The Context Of End-Of-Life Communication In Heart Failure, Caleb Pardue

Dissertations

End-of-life communication between patients, their family members, and healthcare providers is essential to quality care at the end-of-life. Advance care planning is increasingly utilized to facilitate end-of-life communication, but heart failure patients in particular face numerous challenges to achieving adequate end-of-life communication. Extant literature has highlighted the inherent uncertainty in heart failure as a barrier to end-of-life communication as well as the role of time perspective on the experience of heart failure patients, but little empirical research has been conducted to examine the impact of these constructs. The sample included 168 participants with heart failure who were recruited online through …
