Mental Health Incorporation In Nebraskan Recovery Plans Following The 2019 Midwestern Floods, Isabelle Murray Jan 2021

Mental Health Incorporation In Nebraskan Recovery Plans Following The 2019 Midwestern Floods, Isabelle Murray

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

In March 2019, Nebraska was hit with major floods that caused extensive damage throughout the state. Nebraskans spent the following months recovering from many aspects of the natural disaster. One aspect of emergency response and the act of recovery that is commonly overlooked is the mental health of individuals following the traumatic events. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the level of incorporation of mental health care and services in recovery plans following natural disasters. The qualitative analysis of recovery plans focused on Nebraska and the county-level response to the 2019 Midwestern floods. The objectives were to identify …

Designing A Mobile App And Online Directory To Increase The Visibility Of Environmental Organizations In A Community, Kayla Vondracek Jan 2021

Designing A Mobile App And Online Directory To Increase The Visibility Of Environmental Organizations In A Community, Kayla Vondracek

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Concern for environmental degradation, natural resource depletion, and public health has long been a necessary part of a strongly developed and sophisticated society. Humans are primarily responsible for the depletion of the natural environment as it supplies the commodities required to ensure the long-term survival of civilizations. As cultures continue to evolve, so does the practice of land stewardship and protection of resources. With the necessary expansion of industry and housing needed to support a rising human population, the management of natural resources, pollution control, and the environment has become increasingly important to people worldwide. Bernstein and Szuster (2019) suggest …

Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Understand The Behavioral Use Of Single-Use Plastic Bags By Students At The University Of Nebraska–Lincoln, Josephine Stoessel Jan 2021

Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Understand The Behavioral Use Of Single-Use Plastic Bags By Students At The University Of Nebraska–Lincoln, Josephine Stoessel

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Reduction in the use of single-use plastic bags is a necessary sustainability step as it will reduce pollution of air, soil, waterways, and ingestion by marine animals. The Theory of Planned Behavior is used in this study to determine which components are the influencing factors for why students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln use single-use plastic bags. An understanding of these factors allows for suggestions and recommendations for actions that can be taken by the university to combat this environmental issue. EcoCoin is an incentive-based program created by Penn State, and is the focus of this study. The literature review …

Convolutional Neural Networks Can Decode Eye Movement Data: A Black Box Approach To Predicting Task From Eye Movements, Zachary J. Cole, Karl M. Kuntzelman, Michael D. Dodd, Matthew R. Johnson Jan 2021

Convolutional Neural Networks Can Decode Eye Movement Data: A Black Box Approach To Predicting Task From Eye Movements, Zachary J. Cole, Karl M. Kuntzelman, Michael D. Dodd, Matthew R. Johnson

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Previous attempts to classify task from eye movement data have relied on model architectures designed to emulate theoretically defined cognitive processes and/or data that have been processed into aggregate (e.g., fixations, saccades) or statistical (e.g., fixation density) features. Black box convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are capable of identifying relevant features in raw and minimally processed data and images, but difficulty interpreting these model architectures has contributed to challenges in generalizing lab-trained CNNs to applied contexts. In the current study, a CNN classifier was used to classify task from two eye movement datasets (Exploratory and Confirmatory) in which participants searched, memorized, …

Social Connectedness And Negative Affect Uniquely Explain Individual Differences In Response To Emotional Ambiguity, Maital Neta, Rebecca L. Brock Jan 2021

Social Connectedness And Negative Affect Uniquely Explain Individual Differences In Response To Emotional Ambiguity, Maital Neta, Rebecca L. Brock

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Negativity bias is not only central to mood and anxiety disorders, but can powerfully impact our decision-making across domains (e.g., financial, medical, social). This project builds on previous work examining negativity bias using dual-valence ambiguity. Specifically, although some facial expressions have a relatively clear negative (angry) or positive valence (happy), surprised expressions are interpreted negatively by some and positively by others, providing insight into one’s valence bias. Here, we examine putative sources of variability that distinguish individuals with a more negative versus positive valence bias using structural equation modeling. Our model reveals that one’s propensity toward negativity (operationalized as temperamental …

Much Ado About Missingness: A Demonstration Of Full Information Maximum Likelihood Estimation To Address Missingness In Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data, Timothy D. Nelson, Rebecca L. Brock, Sonja Yokum, Cara C. Tomaso, Cary R. Savage, Eric Stice Jan 2021

Much Ado About Missingness: A Demonstration Of Full Information Maximum Likelihood Estimation To Address Missingness In Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data, Timothy D. Nelson, Rebecca L. Brock, Sonja Yokum, Cara C. Tomaso, Cary R. Savage, Eric Stice

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The current paper leveraged a large multi-study functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) dataset (N = 363) and a generated missingness paradigm to demonstrate different approaches for handling missing fMRI data under a variety of conditions. The performance of full information maximum likelihood (FIML) estimation, both with and without auxiliary variables, and listwise deletion were compared under different conditions of generated missing data volumes (i.e., 20, 35, and 50%). FIML generally performed better than listwise deletion in replicating results from the full dataset, but differences were small in the absence of auxiliary variables that correlated strongly with fMRI task data. However, …

Skills-Based Intervention To Enhance Collaborative Decision-Making: Systematic Adaptation And Open Trial Protocol For Veterans With Psychosis, Emily B.H> Treichler, Borsika A. Rabin, William D. Spaulding, Michael L. Thomas, Michelle P. Salyers, Eric L. Granholm, Amy N. Cohen, Gregory A. Light Jan 2021

Skills-Based Intervention To Enhance Collaborative Decision-Making: Systematic Adaptation And Open Trial Protocol For Veterans With Psychosis, Emily B.H> Treichler, Borsika A. Rabin, William D. Spaulding, Michael L. Thomas, Michelle P. Salyers, Eric L. Granholm, Amy N. Cohen, Gregory A. Light

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Background: Collaborative decision-making is an innovative decision-making approach that assigns equal power and responsibility to patients and providers. Most veterans with serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia want a greater role in treatment decisions, but there are no interventions targeted for this population. A skills-based intervention is promising because it is well-aligned with the recovery model, uses similar mechanisms as other evidence-based interventions in this population, and generalizes across decisional contexts while empowering veterans to decide when to initiate collaborative decision-making. Collaborative Decision Skills Training (CDST) was developed in a civilian serious mental illness sample and may fill this gap …

Nontarget Emotional Stimuli Must Be Highly Conspicuous To Modulate The Attentional Blink, Lindsay A. Santacroce, Brandon J. Carlos, Nathan Petro, Benjamin J. Tamber-Rosenau Jan 2021

Nontarget Emotional Stimuli Must Be Highly Conspicuous To Modulate The Attentional Blink, Lindsay A. Santacroce, Brandon J. Carlos, Nathan Petro, Benjamin J. Tamber-Rosenau

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The attentional blink (AB) is often considered a top-down phenomenon because it is triggered by matching an initial target (T1) in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) stream to a search template. However, the AB is modulated when targets are emotional, and is evoked when a task-irrelevant, emotional critical distractor (CDI) replaces T1. Neither manipulation fully captures the interplay between bottom-up and top-down attention in the AB: Valenced targets intrinsically conflate top-down and bottom-up attention. The CDI approach cannotmanipulate second target (T2) valence, which is critical because valenced T2s can “break through” the AB (in the target-manipulation approach). The present …

Social Integration And Domestic Violence Support In An Indigenous Community: Women’S Recommendations Of Formal Versus Informal Sources Of Support, G. Robin Gauthier, Sara C. Francisco, Bilal Khan, Kirk Dombrowski Jan 2021

Social Integration And Domestic Violence Support In An Indigenous Community: Women’S Recommendations Of Formal Versus Informal Sources Of Support, G. Robin Gauthier, Sara C. Francisco, Bilal Khan, Kirk Dombrowski

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Throughout North America, indigenous women experience higher rates of intimate partner violence and sexual violence than any other ethnic group, and so it is of particular importance to understand sources of support for Native American women. In this article, we use social network analysis to study the relationship between social integration and women’s access to domestic violence support by examining the recommendations they would give to another woman in need. We ask two main questions: First, are less integrated women more likely to make no recommendation at all when compared with more socially integrated women? Second, are less integrated women …

Practical Problems And Positive Experiences With Ecological Momentary Assessment: Reflections From People Who Use Drugs, Kelly Markowski, Jeffrey A. Smith, G. Robin Gauthier, Sela R. Harcey Jan 2021

Practical Problems And Positive Experiences With Ecological Momentary Assessment: Reflections From People Who Use Drugs, Kelly Markowski, Jeffrey A. Smith, G. Robin Gauthier, Sela R. Harcey

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Background: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is an increasingly popular and feasible form of data collection, but it can be intensive and intrusive. Especially for at-risk, vulnerable populations like people who use drugs (PWUD), poor experiences with EMA may exacerbate existing chronic struggles while decreasing response rates. However, little research queries participants’ experiences with EMA studies.

Objectives: We explore participants’ positive and negative experiences with EMA, identifying what they liked about the study, the problems they experienced, and suggested solutions to these problems.

Methods: Results come from semi-structured interviews from 26 PWUD (6 women; 20 men) in Nebraska …

Constructing Pornography Addiction’S Harms In Science, News Media, And Politics, Kelsy Burke, Alice Millermacphee Jan 2021

Constructing Pornography Addiction’S Harms In Science, News Media, And Politics, Kelsy Burke, Alice Millermacphee

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In order to describe pornography’s harms in the twenty-first century, an age of unprecedented access to Internet technology, some advocates—including activists, religious leaders, politicians, and scientists—use a medical/scientific framework to claim that pornography is biologically addictive. This article examines public discourse on “pornography addiction” to extend theories of sociology of science and sociology of sexualities about scientific knowledge and the biomedicalization of sex and sexuality. Using content analysis of over 600 documents, including scientific studies, newspaper articles, and state government resolutions, we show how references to pornography as addictive emerged in the twenty-first century and grew most substantially in the …

Litigating Child Sex Abuse In Domestic Relations Cases, Mike Mchenry Jan 2021

Litigating Child Sex Abuse In Domestic Relations Cases, Mike Mchenry

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

IN RULING ON PARENTING TIME DISPUTES COURTS ARE SOMETIMES CALLED UPON TO MAKE FINDINGS REGARDING WHETHER A PARENT HAS ABUSED A CHILD, INCLUDING SEXUAL ABUSE.

Sometimes these abuse allegations are handled in criminal court, and if a conviction enters then the matter is considered resolved. However, if the accused parent is acquitted, or if the prosecuting authority feels the evidence is inadequate to justify a criminal prosecution, then the obligation to assess the allegation’s merits falls to the domestic relations court, where busy dockets and inexperienced practitioners can present a challenge for the judge.

Ready? Set? Go?: Examining Organizational Readiness For Change In A Quality Improvement Intervention For Youth Mentoring Programs, Renee Spencer, Alison L. Drew, Carla Herrera, Bowen Mcbeath, Thomas E. Keller Jan 2021

Ready? Set? Go?: Examining Organizational Readiness For Change In A Quality Improvement Intervention For Youth Mentoring Programs, Renee Spencer, Alison L. Drew, Carla Herrera, Bowen Mcbeath, Thomas E. Keller

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

The number of youth mentoring programs has risen significantly in recent decades. This trend, coupled with evidence that programs employing a greater number of empirically supported practices achieve more positive effects for youth participants, has prompted increasing interest in how to promote more widespread use of evidence-based practice standards in mentoring programs. In an effort to describe and better understand efforts to implement recommended standards, we studied a multi-level initiative sponsored by a national advocacy organization in which its state-level Affiliates guided local mentoring programs through a structured quality improvement process. Specifically, we examined organizational readiness for change among mentoring …

Attuning To Need: Reconceptualizing “Help” In Poor Rural Areas, Jennifer M. Frank, Laura Brierton Granruth, Brittany Leffler, Rachel Preibisch, Dawn Watson, Heather Girvin, Mary Glazier

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Social isolation is closely linked to overall health and well-being and is a serious concern for those in rural areas. Our research seeks insights into the needs experienced in poor rural areas by utilizing letter writing between students and community agency participants as a research methodology. In the letters, we observed that community participants relied upon friend and family style relationships and even viewed their agency relationships as such. This suggests that transforming "professional helping relationships" into alliances that are less impersonal might be in order. Such relationships and connections seemed conducive to the development of empowering self-efficacy. This finding …

Fictional Foreign Policy: How Madam Secretary And House Of Cards Depict United States Foreign Policy., John Heyrman Jan 2021

Fictional Foreign Policy: How Madam Secretary And House Of Cards Depict United States Foreign Policy., John Heyrman

Commonwealth Review of Political Science

This paper analyzes the ways that United States foreign policy is depicted in two prominent current television programs: House of Cards and Madam Secretary. Both of these programs have had frequent plots in which the fictional foreign policy of the U.S. deals with issues very similar to those that the United States has actually confronted in recent years. Examples include nuclear proliferation negotiations with Iran and U.S. concern over anti-gay legislation in Russia. Several of these fictional stories are analyzed here to consider how processes and policies of the U.S. are portrayed. Madam Secretary does much more to demonstrate …

Perceptions Of Discrimination In The Legal Profession, Sabrina Collins Jan 2021

Perceptions Of Discrimination In The Legal Profession, Sabrina Collins

Commonwealth Review of Political Science

Historically, the legal profession has been dominated by white men (García-López 2008). Over time, the barriers hindering diverse participation have been somewhat lifted. In recent years, law schools enrolled equal percentages of men and women, and the number of minority students has also increased. So, how has the legal profession adapted to these changes? The hiring of women and minorities in the field of law does not reflect the increasing diversity seen in law school. Today, only 36% of lawyers are women. While existing research shows discrimination present in the field of law, few studies have examined the relationship between …

The Nature And Extent Of Presidential Pardon Power: An Analysis In Light Of Recent Political Developments, Max Guirguis Ph.D. Jan 2021

The Nature And Extent Of Presidential Pardon Power: An Analysis In Light Of Recent Political Developments, Max Guirguis Ph.D.

Commonwealth Review of Political Science

Long recognized as the most sweeping and least checked power vested in the Chief Executive, the pardon power received renewed scholarly attention with the federal investigation of the Trump White House. President Trump’s assertion via a Twitter post that “the U.S. President has the complete power to pardon” provoked a heated national debate on the reach of his pardoning authority. This paper is an attempt to elucidate the nature of the pardon power by examining its historical contours and the constitutional principles governing its exercise.

Politics At The Pulpit: Elite Religious Cues And Immigration Attitudes, Benjamin Knoll, Matthew Baker Jan 2021

Politics At The Pulpit: Elite Religious Cues And Immigration Attitudes, Benjamin Knoll, Matthew Baker

Commonwealth Review of Political Science

Previous scholarship has demonstrated a link between religiosity and immigration attitudes, often inferring the effect of cues from religious leaders as the motivating source. This study directly examines the “elite cues” linking mechanism with an experiment embedded in a nationally representative public opinion survey. We improve on previous research designs by introducing a pretest that measures immigration policy attitudes among respondents which can then be directly compared to posttest measures after the introduction of the elite cue stimulus. Multivariate analysis of the survey results reveal no support for the elite cues explanation. We discuss the implications of these findings for …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Purpose: Balance deficits after brain injury, including reactive recovery from unexpected perturbations, can persist well after rehabilitation is concluded. While traditional clinical assessments are practical, the anticipatory nature of the tasks may mask perceptible balance control. Computerized dynamic posturography can directly quantify capacity to respond to unexpected, external perturbations. This study examined the reliability of the computerized dynamic posturography assessment with the device PROPRIO® 4000 in adults with traumatic brain injury and created the minimal detectable change for its standardized test.

Methods: Ten adults (ages 21–55 years) with chronic (average 10 ± 6 years post-injury) severe (loss of consciousness 2–75 …

Making Nice Or Faking Nice? Exploring Supervisors’ Two-Faced Response To Their Past Abusive Behavior, Shawn T. Mcclean, Stephen H. Courtright, Junhyok Yim, Troy A. Smith Jan 2021

Making Nice Or Faking Nice? Exploring Supervisors’ Two-Faced Response To Their Past Abusive Behavior, Shawn T. Mcclean, Stephen H. Courtright, Junhyok Yim, Troy A. Smith

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Although extant research has shown that abusive supervision is a destructive and immoral form of leader behavior, theory provides conflicting perspectives on how supervisors respond to their own abusive behavior. We therefore draw upon and integrate moral cleansing theory and impression management and construction theory to explore whether and when supervisors engage in genuine reparations or impression management following episodes of abusive behavior. Results taken from a 3-week, experience sampling study of supervisors suggest support for the impression management path; following episodes of abusive behavior, supervisors higher on symbolized moral identity become more concerned with their image, and thus engage …

Identification Of Contributing Factors For Driver’S Perceptual Bias Of Aggressive Driving In China, Yongfeng Ma, Xin Gu, Ya'nan Yu, Aemal Khattak, Shuyan Chen, Kun Tang

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Aggressive driving is common across the world. While most aggressive driving is conscious, some aggressive driving behavior may be unconscious on part of motor vehicle drivers. Perceptual bias of aggressive driving behavior is one of the main causes of traffic accidents. This paper focuses on identifying impact factors related to aggressive driving perceptual bias. Questionnaire data from 690 drivers, collected from a drivers’ retraining course administered by the Traffic Management Bureau in Nanjing, China, were used to collect drivers’ socioeconomic characteristics, personality traits, and external environment data. Actual penalty points were considered as an objective indicator and Gaussian mixture model …
