Parole Officers’ Perspective On The Needs Of Indigenous Offenders On Conditional Release, Ritesh Dalip Narayan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Indigenous offenders are overrepresented in all aspects of the Canadian criminal justice system, including corrections. Indigenous offenders are overrepresented in the prison population and are least likely to be granted an early release from prison. Indigenous offenders also disproportionately breach their conditional release orders and consequently spend more time incarcerated than non-Indigenous offenders. To understand the reasons behind the breaches, need-based theoretical lenses were used to analyze data. Sixteen parole officers were interviewed using a narrative design where participants shared their accounts on supervising Indigenous offenders while highlighting the needs which they felt were not being met by their Indigenous …

Increasing Provider Awareness About The Use Of Cbt In Treating Insomnia In Adults, Ayorinde Oluwagbemiga Oyeneyin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThis doctoral project addressed the issue of prescribing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as the first-line treatment for insomnia. Despite being less efficacious, medications are the most preferred form of treatment for insomnia among most psychiatric clinicians. Providers at the clinical site where the project took place were foregoing CBT in preference to medications. Providers preferred the pharmacotherapeutic approach due to its ease of prescription compared to the psychotherapeutic intervention. An educational program was provided for the providers regarding the advantages of prescribing CBT over medications, for the treatment of insomnia. To measure perceptions and sentencing decisions, 525 participants were asked to read a hypothetical case of CSA by a teacher with a minor student. Point-biserial correlational analyses were used to assess the influence of the independent variable (sex of …

Much less is known on the impact of an elected hysterectomy over alternative treatments for younger women with benign reproductive issues. The purpose of this study was to understand women’s postsurgical attitude towards an elected hysterectomy. A qualitative phenomenological design was used with purposive sampling to interview 15 women between 18-40 years of age who had a hysterectomy for a benign reproductive issue using …

The purpose was to correct a knowledge deficit leading to a lack of compliance of the VA nurses on the target unit. The project was directed by the principles of the Knowles’ adult learning model. The sources that generated evidence for the …

The Lived Experience Of Family In Biological Children Living In Therapeutic Foster Homes, Maria K. Betts

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Therapeutic-level foster homes provide housing and care for special needs children removed from their own homes. The addition of a special needs child can lead to increased family stress. However, recent reviews of the literature show that there is very little literature aimed at understanding what the biological children in these homes experience. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the experience of family in adults who, as children, were these biological children. The family stress and coping model was used as a conceptual framework of understanding. Data were obtained from participants in Upstate New York from both …

The Moderating Effect Of Self-Esteem On Servant Leadership And Job Outcomes In The Hospitality Industry, Marylouise Fitzgibbon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The hospitality industry has the highest level of turnover of any sector in the United States. Turnover intentions are impacted by an employee’s level of job satisfaction and their self-esteem. Research consistently shows that servant leadership is a highly effective leadership style in the hospitality industry, as it focuses on serving others and placing their needs first. However, it is unknown how the relationship between servant leadership, job satisfaction, and turnover intention is moderated by employee self-esteem in the hospitality industry. This quantitative study was aimed at answering that research question. Servant leadership theory and social exchange theory served as …

Social Determinants And Academic Success For Online Undergraduates Mediated By Mental Health, Jamie Michelle Claus Getz Jan 2021

Social Determinants And Academic Success For Online Undergraduates Mediated By Mental Health, Jamie Michelle Claus Getz

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractSocial determinants of health (SDH) are social and economic systems that directly contribute to health disparities and inequalities. This study examined SDH and their relation to education, also an SDH. The relationship between SDH and online undergraduate achievement, as measured by grade-point average (GPA), was studied. Cumulative inequality is the theoretical framework that guided the study; it underscores the complexity of interaction between personal, social, and environmental stressors in relation to a student’s academic performance. The quantitative survey design allowed for potential relationships between variables to be observed and studied based on the survey responses per self-report from 212 online …

The Predictive Relationship Of Allostatic Load In Asthma, Mohamed Mustafa Hassan Jan 2021

The Predictive Relationship Of Allostatic Load In Asthma, Mohamed Mustafa Hassan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research on populations emphasizes the influence of allostatic overload, a marker of biophysical and biochemical stress, in driving adverse health outcomes. Unknown is the impact of allostatic load and its cardiovascular, metabolic, and inflammatory components as they pertain to asthma prevalence in U.S. populations. Specifically, there is a need to understand the nature of the relationship between allostatic load and asthma in light of confounders such as socioeconomic status, race, education, and gender. Using Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model as a theoretical underpinning and binary logistic regression as a statistical modality, the predictive relationship between allostatic load and asthma was examined in …

Resilience As A Moderator Between Food And Housing Insecurity And Mental Distress, Denise Mchugh Loggie Jan 2021

Resilience As A Moderator Between Food And Housing Insecurity And Mental Distress, Denise Mchugh Loggie

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The prevalence of food insecurity (FI) and housing insecurity (HI) in college students has increased over the last decade along with an associated increase in mental health problems. Studies show significant increases in many markers for mental distress in this population including a higher prevalence of mood disorders, non-lethal self-harm, and attempted and completed suicides, particularly over the last decade. Compounding these challenges is the low level of resilience found in college-age young adults, potentially limiting their ability to cope with and recover from the hardship of FI and HI. This quantitative study, guided by resilience theory and Maslow’s hierarchy …
