Tiktok Containment Meets "The Threat Of A Good Example": Inversion Gets More Than 15 Seconds Of Fame, Marcus Breen Jan 2026

Tiktok Containment Meets "The Threat Of A Good Example": Inversion Gets More Than 15 Seconds Of Fame, Marcus Breen

Fast Capitalism

When President Donald Trump proposed to ban the Chinese social media platform TikTok on national security grounds on August 6, 2020, it marked a pivotal moment in the interaction between many contending layers of political life. Cojoined in a register of nationalist rhetoric, US national policies cross-referenced geopolitics, and the history of international competition and cooperation in global trade flows with and against China. As such, the proposed ban gave credit to the ancient popular Chinese saying: “Things that oppose each other also complement each other” (Ban Gu nd: 84). More precisely, when seen through the lens of digital networking, …

“You Are Not Independent In Any Way”: Biopolitics, Gig Economy Work And The Emergence Of Illegible Antagonisms, Tony Iantosca Jan 2026

“You Are Not Independent In Any Way”: Biopolitics, Gig Economy Work And The Emergence Of Illegible Antagonisms, Tony Iantosca

Fast Capitalism

In this article, I examine the qualitative dimensions of gig economy work, labor power, and potentiality using two categories of biopolitical subjugation developed by Lazzarato (2012; 2015): social subjection and machinic subjugation. As Lazzarato defined and elaborated these techniques in the wake of the financial crisis, I also contextualize gig economy work as the evolution of economic processes that Marx and subsequent post-workerist scholars have analyzed, namely, circulation and formal and real subsumption. I claim that it is through Lazzarato’s two techniques of biopolitical subjection and subjugation that the gig economy attempts to manage workers’ subjective dispositions while extracting data …

Shut Your Cake Hole, You Over-Educated Whore: The Misogynistic Weaponization Of The Phd, Tara Brabazon Jan 2026

Shut Your Cake Hole, You Over-Educated Whore: The Misogynistic Weaponization Of The Phd, Tara Brabazon

Fast Capitalism

The (higher) education of women is a pinball in the arcade game of contemporary masculinity. Andrew Tate, while often proclaiming the irrelevance of university degrees, has deployed their nomenclature through his Facebook page, titled the Tate University. One of his ‘courses’ was described as a PhD (Pimpin’ Hoes Degree). Why is the education of women discredited, yet the language of education summoned and activated to build the ‘alpha male’? This article does not (only) investigate Andrew Tate, alpha culture or the black pill ideology. It explores why the higher education of women – and university-educated women – is a focus …

Downloading Is Killing Music: Napster And The Recording Industry’S Piracy Panic Narrative, David M. Arditi Jan 2026

Downloading Is Killing Music: Napster And The Recording Industry’S Piracy Panic Narrative, David M. Arditi

Fast Capitalism

Beginning in the late 1990s and the arrival of the file-sharing program Napster, the recording industry used a “piracy panic narrative” in an attempt not only to prevent file-sharing, but also, to change the basic parameters of copyright law. In this piracy panic narrative, major record labels and their representative trade associations made the argument that file-sharing is piracy, piracy is stealing, and this stealing hurts recording artists. In this paper, I argue that the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) used this narrative in the United States to change public opinion on file-sharing with the ultimate goal of changing …

Bridging Theory And Self-Development In Human Services And Counselor Education, Kristy Carlisle Jan 2026

Bridging Theory And Self-Development In Human Services And Counselor Education, Kristy Carlisle

Journal of Human Services Scholarship and Interprofessional Collaboration

Counselor and human services education increasingly recognize self-awareness as a core component of professional competence and ethical practice. This conceptual manuscript presents a pedagogical framework that integrates major helping theories as tools for structured self-reflection and self-development among students and practitioners. Drawing from experiential learning theory, reflective practice, and models of counselor identity formation, the approach encourages learners to view themselves through theoretical lenses such as person-centered, cognitive-behavioral, and existential frameworks, paralleling the very lenses through which they will view their clients in practice. By engaging in guided reflective activities, students examine personal beliefs, emotions, and behaviors to enhance self-understanding, …

Automating Academia: Implications Of Genai Use In Doctoral Research And Online Mentoring, Cheryl Burleigh, Andrea M. Wilson

Journal of Online Mentoring

This study critically examines the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), specifically ChatGPT, in the development of doctoral dissertation proposals, highlighting both its potential and its ethical implications. Through a content analysis of a dissertation proposal created using ChatGPT, the study investigates how GenAI supports structural organization, academic writing, and citation formatting while exposing significant concerns related to fabricated references, methodological misalignment, and diminished scholarly rigor. Although GenAI accelerates the proposal-writing process, its outputs often lack the depth, coherence, and originality expected at the doctoral level, thereby threatening the integrity of academic research. Findings reveal that GenAI-generated content may deceive …

The Relationships Between Ego Depletion And Social Behaviors Across Different Degrees Of Psychological Flexibility, Jacob Cage Norris Jan 2026

The Relationships Between Ego Depletion And Social Behaviors Across Different Degrees Of Psychological Flexibility, Jacob Cage Norris

Masters Theses

Social behavior includes behaviors that are influenced, directly or indirectly, by the realistic, anticipated, imagined, or implied presences of others. Particular social behaviors such as altruism or aggression may vary in how accessible they are, depending on the degree of self-control that has been recently exerted. Specifically, self-control fatigue, or ego depletion, seems to make aggression more likely and altruism less. However, individuals who are psychologically flexible, or who tend to be in contact with the present moment while engaging in behaviors that support the pursuit of values may not respond to ego depletion with the same changes to social …

The Role Of Isotocin In Female Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Reproductive Behavior And Its Implication For Intranasal Oxytocin Therapy In Humans, Katelynn M. Benge

Masters Theses

In the past several decades, oxytocin has been colloquially termed the “cuddle hormone,” due to its role in pair-bonding and monogamy (Carter et al., 1992). In addition to being used experimentally for psychological disorder, it has also been used in couple’s counseling settings (Anagnostou et al., 2014; Domes et al., 2016). The outcomes of this research reveal mixed results, creating a need for further research in the topic to understand the exact mechanisms by which oxytocin works in the brain to induce this prosocial response. This study sought to address this deficit through the zebrafish animal model. The zebrafish serves …

Methods: A comprehensive librarian-assisted search was done with three databases, and two reviewers independently performed title/abstract and full-text reviews within a systematic …

Structural Logics Of Presidential Immunity, Aziz Z. Huq Jan 2026

Structural Logics Of Presidential Immunity, Aziz Z. Huq

Duke Law Journal

In Trump v. United States, the Supreme Court wrought two new presidential immunities from criminal prosecution. Supplemented by a pair of penumbral evidentiary rules, these immunities inhibit criminal indictment or conviction of the president, and indeed the criminal prosecution of a substantial number of subordinate officials, across many imaginable fact-patterns. The Court justified its interventions on consequentialist, and not originalist or precedential, grounds. But its analysis of immunity’s actual and likely effects was radically incomplete. It focused narrowly on the person of the president, eschewing any attempt to situate or relate that individual’s incentives and behavior to the wider institutional …

The Relationship Between Cadet Strength And Musculoskeletal Injury During Basic Training And Physical Program Requirements, Gregory Hess Jan 2026

The Relationship Between Cadet Strength And Musculoskeletal Injury During Basic Training And Physical Program Requirements, Gregory Hess

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Burnout In Magnet Hospitals: Opportunities For Organizational Intervention, Lori Kennedy, Heather Brom, Karen B. Lasater, Nancy M. Albert, Barbara Holmes Gobel, Christi Delemos, Lisa M. Williams, Linda H. Williams, Linda H. Aiken

Individual Articles

OBJECTIVE: To determine modifiable organizational factors associated with advanced practice RN (APRN) burnout in Magnet®-designated hospitals to guide organizational interventions to improve APRN well-being and retention.

METHODS: Cross-sectional study of work environments of 50 US Magnet hospitals and the associated well-being of 21 855 of their clinicians (APRNs, physician assistants, physicians [MDs], RNs).

RESULTS: Overall, 37%of APRNs experienced high burnout compared with 34% of MDs (P < 0.05) and 49% of RNs (P < 0.001); additionally, 32%of APRNs intended to leave their jobs. APRN burnout was significantly lower in organizations that minimized chaotic working conditions, provided APRNs more control over their workloads, involved APRNs in shared governance, improved clinician and management relations, and improved interprofessional teamwork.

CONCLUSIONS:Well-being and retention of APRNs in Magnet hospitals require their greater engagement in organization processes and systems that improve work environments.

Individual Articles

Given the global nursing shortage and the increasing prevalence of workplace stressors, resilience has emerged as a crucial factor influencing job satisfaction, preventing burnout, and ensuring high-quality patient care. While previous research has established a connection between resilience and various occupational outcomes, the mediating effect of health-promoting behaviors—such as physical activity, diet, and sleep—remains largely unexplored, underscoring the need for further investigation in this area. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine the effect of chosen lifestyle aspects on the connection between resilience and job satisfaction among nurses.
