Reducing Youth False Confessions With Attorney Presence, Rosa Bowden-Maccalla
Reducing Youth False Confessions With Attorney Presence, Rosa Bowden-Maccalla
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Interrogation techniques are influenced by the interrogator's style and the individual being interviewed. Most law enforcement agencies use adult-centered interrogation methods, leading to suboptimal results when working with youth. The research has focused on youth offenders in the interrogation room and the choices they make, often leading to false confessions when an attorney is absent. This suggests that the presence of legal representation helps protect youths' vulnerability, suggestibility, and rights, thereby reducing the likelihood of false confessions. This qualitative collective case study aimed to understand why youth offenders falsely confess by collecting seven anonymous questionnaires from multigender U.S. practicing attorneys …

LMU Theses and Dissertations
This mixed-methods action research study explored how flexible seating influences student empowerment, autonomy, decision making, and self-regulation in a Title I junior high school on California’s Central Coast. Grounded in constructivist learning theory (Piaget, 1952; Vygotsky, 1978) and self-determination theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1985), the current study examined how providing students with meaningful choice over their learning environment can promote equity and engagement within underresourced contexts. Forty-six eighth-grade students participated in this study by completing Likert-scale and open-ended survey items assessing their experiences with flexible seating. Quantitative data revealed flexible seating increased students’ sense of autonomy, comfort, and engagement, …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Background and aim
Higher dietary flavonoid intake has been associated with lower risks of mortality and major chronic disease, yet its relationship with psychological well-being (PWB), a key contributor to health and quality of life, remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate bidirectional associations between dietary flavonoid intake and two PWB facets: happiness (positive emotional state) and optimism (generalized expectation of positive outcomes). Specifically, we examined whether (1) overall flavonoid-rich dietary patterns (flavodiet score), (2) intake of specific flavonoid-rich foods, and (3) total flavonoid and subclass intakes were each associated with happiness and optimism over time. Methods

The Aperspectival Playfulness Of Allan Leslie Combs, Zeke Floro
The Aperspectival Playfulness Of Allan Leslie Combs, Zeke Floro
Journal of Conscious Evolution
This commemorative article reflects on the work of the late Dr. Allan Leslie Combs, a pioneering scholar in consciousness studies and an influential mentor. The essay argues that his scholarly writing, characterized by profound openness, heartfelt compassion, and sharp wit, represents an embodiment of the integral consciousness he writes about. Through a close reading of his essays and a personal reflection on his mentorship, the article connects his playful style to Jean Gebser’s concept of aperspectival consciousness and frames his humor within Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy of divine “play” (lila), concluding that, for Combs, scholarship is an embodied practice …

The Cult Of Exchange Value And The Critical Theory Of Spectacle, Mark P. Worrell
Fast Capitalism
The concept of ‘spectacle’ entered the vocabulary of the social sciences with the publication of Debord’s classic Society of the Spectacle. Debord and company were concerned with art, aesthetics, urbanism, the city, architecture, and so on, but, as Lefebvre points out, as these multiple concerns fell by the wayside the Situationists were left with generally little more than an abstract critique of society and polemics (McDonough 2002: 275-76, 281) with the notion of spectacle at the center of it all. To the extent that Situationism still exerts an influence on critical theory it is apparently in just this notion of …
