Research outputs 2022 to 2026

An important role of a Physical Education (PE) teacher is to assist students to develop the fundamental motor skills (FMS) that will allow them to participate in physical activities with competence and confidence. Thus, PE teachers require the knowledge and skills to carry out this crucial task. In the crowded curricula of Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) programs, there are limited opportunities for pre-service PE teachers to learn how to analyze and perform a large list of motor skills. Our purposes in this study were to determine whether a single session peer-teaching intervention could improve pre-service PE teachers’ short-term non-dominant …

Kapori: Researching Local Responses To Sorcery Accusation–Related Violence In Papua New Guinea Through Indigenous Storytelling, Bomai D. Witne, Verena Thomas, Jackie Kauli, Christina Spurgeon

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This article explores kapori, an Indigenous form of storytelling to investigate and report experiences, motivations, responses, and challenges of sorcery accusation–related violence (SARV) by the Yuri people, a tribal group from the Papua New Guinea highlands. SARV is attributed to the belief that some people use supernatural powers to cause illness, deaths, or misfortunes to a community and, therefore, become targets of violent accusations. We outline the rationale for incorporating kapori into SARV research and discuss the findings from a storytelling workshop with 14 participants representing 13 clans of Yuri. The findings suggest that key strategies for curbing SARV include …

Perceptions Of Capacity, Fatigue, And Their Psychophysics: Examining Construct Equivalence And The Relationship Between Actual Capacity And Perception Of Capacity During Resisted Elbow Flexion Tasks, James Steele, Matheus D. Pinto, Kazunori Nosaka, James L. Nuzzo

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The actual capacity to perform tasks, and actual fatigue, are concepts that have been thought of as inherently linked. These considerations also extend to their phenomenology, meaning the perception(s) of capacity or fatigue. The phenomenology of capacity or fatigue thus may be capturing the same underlying latent construct. Further, it is speculated that the actual capacity of a person to perform a given task, and their perception of that capacity, have a psychophysical relationship. The aim of this study was therefore twofold: 1) to explore the extensional equivalence of perceptions of capacity and fatigue, and 2) to explore the relationship …

Is Conservative Opposition To Climate Change Threat-Based? Articulating An Integrated Threat Model Of Climate Change Attitudes, Samantha K. Stanley, Kirsti M. Jylhä, Zoe Leviston, Iain Walker

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Throughout the literature, there are assertions that those endorsing conservative ideologies reject the science and solutions of climate change due to perceived threat. That is, they fear that accepting climate change means accepting problems with a favoured socioeconomic system and supporting action on climate change threatens to disrupt these systems. We draw together lines of research and reasoning on this topic to outline three key predictions this perspective makes about the drivers of conservative denial of climate change and opposition to climate policy. The first is that an asymmetry exists in climate-related threat perceptions, whereby greater endorsement of conservative ideology …

Surviving Child Sexual Abuse In Women's Artistic Gymnastics: ‘It's Beautiful, Because Had I Stayed In The Past, I Wouldn’T Have Evolved As A Person’, Natalie Barker-Ruchti, Valeria Varea

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The USA Gymnastics sex abuse scandal raised global awareness about child sexual abuse (CSA) in women's artistic gymnastics. The ensuing media coverage also centre-staged victims’ survivorship stories, a process that for many moved from dissociating, recognising and disclosing CSA to feeling comfort when connecting with survivors and accepting CSA as part of their life history. However, scholarship on what survivorship from CSA in sport entails, and importantly, what it means to athletes, is limited. In this article, we frame the survival of CSA using Arthur Frank’s socio-narratological conceptualisation of people being able to process the devastating consequences of a life-threatening …
