A Phenomenological Study Of Social Workers' Meaning Of Food, Mood, And Their Readiness To Adopt Dietary Interventions With Clients Who Are Depressed, Ronald Anthony Bunce
A Phenomenological Study Of Social Workers' Meaning Of Food, Mood, And Their Readiness To Adopt Dietary Interventions With Clients Who Are Depressed, Ronald Anthony Bunce
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As incidence of depression rises worldwide and treatment effectiveness remains flat, interest grows in developing novel treatments to improve outcomes for those seeking help for depression. Research on diet, nutrition, and depression suggests that food affects mood. The literature addresses how a certain dietary pattern may be incorporated in clinical treatment as a modifiable risk factor with those presenting with depression, but the voices of social workers are absent. Given that social workers are the largest providers of therapeutic services for those experiencing depression, the field has much to contribute to the development and assessment of new, non-pharmaceutical, treatment protocols. …

Suicidal Ideation Of Asian College Students In The Us : The Roles Of Family Perfectionism, Imposterism, Thwarted Belongingness, Perceived Burdensomeness, And Relational Meaning In Life, Shangyun Zhou
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Suicide is the first leading cause of death for college-age individuals (17-24) in the US who identify as Asian and Pacific Islanders. Family perfectionism – discrepancy, defined as the perception of a gap between one’s performance and the family’s high standards, was found to be an important risk factor in this population due to the strong emphasis on interpersonal contexts in many Asian cultures. However, the current literature has not provided clear empirical support for the mechanisms through which family perfectionism exerts its impact on suicidal ideation. To fill this gap, the current study attempted to integrate the Interpersonal Theory …
Assessing Youth Cannabis Use In New York State: Whether Intersecting Identities Increase Current Cannabis Use, Jericho Lindee Paul Adams
Assessing Youth Cannabis Use In New York State: Whether Intersecting Identities Increase Current Cannabis Use, Jericho Lindee Paul Adams
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Background:Cannabis use can have a multitude of health effects on developing youth, including mental health distress and other impacts on youth well-being. With the passage of the Marihuana and Taxation Act in New York State (NYS) in March of 2021, which legalized recreational cannabis use for those ages 21 and over, it is imperative to consider its potential impact on the prevalence of youth cannabis use. This concern is amplified for minority youth as previous research has observed increased prevalence of substance use for these populations. Additionally, intersecting identities between minoritized populations and differing health statuses and social experiences may …
Morality, Context, And Crime Decision-Making, Shaina Herman
Morality, Context, And Crime Decision-Making, Shaina Herman
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Recent criminological advancements increasingly aim to better understand criminal behavior in context. This is particularly true regarding how perceptions of legal sanction risk are anchored in reality and influence offending decisions. Yet research on extralegal considerations such as morality has not kept pace. The current dissertation integrates criminological morality literature, with psychological research on Self Concept Maintenance Theory (SCMT) and moral identity, into a perspective on moral decision-making dynamics that integrates personal and situational factors. I utilize three data collections containing randomized experiments to investigate the situational malleability of moral evaluations and the interrelatedness with moral identity and criminal intentions. …
Classification Accuracy Of I-Ready Diagnostic For High-Stakes Exam Outcomes For Elementary School Students, Kayla Campana
Classification Accuracy Of I-Ready Diagnostic For High-Stakes Exam Outcomes For Elementary School Students, Kayla Campana
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of the present study was to compare the classification accuracy of a previous year’s end-of-year state assessment, a computer-adaptive diagnostic assessment (i-Ready), and the combination of the previous year’s end-of-year state assessment with the following year’s i-Ready performance to predict the rate of students passing or failing the following year’s end-of-year state assessment in English Language Arts (ELA) and math. This was conducted to determine whether i-Ready as an additional screening measure is necessary to identify students who are at-risk of failing the upcoming end-of-year assessment and are in need of tiered intervention supports, or if the previous …
Encajar From The Margins: Drop-Out And Undocumented Latinx Youth Negotiating Deservingness And Spaces Of Belonging, Eric J. Macias
Encajar From The Margins: Drop-Out And Undocumented Latinx Youth Negotiating Deservingness And Spaces Of Belonging, Eric J. Macias
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Encajar from the Margins is a timely and important ethnographic project that contributes to existing literature on issues related to immigrant youth’s navigation of “illegality,” deservingness, and belonging. It examines the layers of challenges faced by undocumented youth who drop-out of high school. More specifically, this research centers the counter-narratives of undocumented youth that challenge many stigmatizing labels they have socially acquired. This dissertation focuses on an understudied population of young people who do not qualify for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or any other immigration protections after they migrated to the United States. This study provides important insight …
How Emerging Technologies Are Reshaping Audit Success Factors, Yueqi Li
How Emerging Technologies Are Reshaping Audit Success Factors, Yueqi Li
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The external audit profession faces a rapidly changing environment due to innovative and intelligent technologies. For example, traditional external auditors are challenged to perform cybersecurity related tasks and conduct remote audits. Today, external audits are not only performed on financial statements and IT controls, but also on Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems to ensure compliance with laws and ethical standards, and technical robustness. To address these emerging trends of technology and their impact on the audit profession, this dissertation focuses on three research questions: 1) What affects professional auditors’ and accounting students’ performance in cybersecurity-related tasks? 2) How are changes from …
Trajectories Of Maternal Parenting Stress And Adolescent Behavioral Symptoms In Unmarried Families : The Roles Of Family Immigration Status, Harsh Parenting, And Father’S Early Involvement, Fei Tang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
BackgroundAdolescence is a critical period for developing social and emotional wellbeing. Adolescents experience many physical and social changes, making them vulnerable to adaptive and behavioral problems. Compared to their peers in married families, adolescents in unmarried families may be at particularly elevated risk of developing internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems, identifying key risk factors in a family context could provide insights on the development of family-based interventions. Mothers are often seen as the center of the environmental context of children development, their responsiveness to children may be impacted by their economic and psychological resources, which could crucially affect the wellbeing …
Investigating The Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Obesity While Considering Race, Ethnicity, Sex, And Sexual Orientation, Mariama Ceesay
Investigating The Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Obesity While Considering Race, Ethnicity, Sex, And Sexual Orientation, Mariama Ceesay
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
AbstractObesity is a chronic disease that plagues about 34% of the world population and rising (CDC,2023). Obesity develops over time due to lifestyle factors, biological factors, and the environment. Life course epidemiology approaches understanding the etiology of obesity by pinpointing how particular events in a lifetime can facilitate later life obesity. One emerging important early life factor that may influence adult obesity risk is adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Rates of ACEs are higher in sexual minorities, women, and nonwhite individuals (Hughes et al., 2022). Furthermore, the rate of obesity is higher in women and nonwhite communities (CDC,2023). Knowing this information, …

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Step Towards Unfolding The Mystery, Aditi Kamlesh Bhanushali
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
AbstractBackground: Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), is a complex disease that includes the dysregulation of the Central Nervous system. There is no exact known etiology or pathophysiology which leads to the development of ME/CFS. To understand the possible causes behind this mysterious disease, I conducted this project under the guidance of Dr. Moslehi to evaluate a range of demographic, lifestyle, and epidemiological factors and their risk in the development of ME/CFS. Methods: My project is part of a case-control study conducted by Dr. Roxana Moslehi. ME/CFS is a rare disease, so a case-control study design was …

Expectations For Success Impact On Achievement, Gregory Fields
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS IMPACT ON ACHIEVEMENTABSTRACT The intransigence of the achievement gaps in schools in this nation and in the school districts in which I served as a building administrator or district support staff member was the motivation for conducting this examination of the role of expectations for success relative to achievement on assessments. This study investigated the possible associations of how different categories of expectations for success, racial demographics, and school contexts may provide insight into persistence of racially identified achievement gaps and in confounding efforts to narrow those gaps. In addition, this study differed from numerous studies, some …
“Talking Sweet And Moving Quiet”: Trauma And Resiliency In Gang-Involved Girls In Belize, Kristcha Deguerre
“Talking Sweet And Moving Quiet”: Trauma And Resiliency In Gang-Involved Girls In Belize, Kristcha Deguerre
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Background: Currently, the research exploring gangs in Belize is growing, with one exception; current research excludes gang-involved girls and women. Besides a previous pilot study conducted by this author, there is no known research on gangs in Belize that includes girls and women. Given the extent to which gang violence and activity is increasing within Belize, it is crucial to understand the entire gang-involved population in order to combat this growing social issue.
Perceptions Of Organizational Entitativity : Justice As The Basis For Identification And Social Exchange, Jeremiah Joel Kephart Martin
Perceptions Of Organizational Entitativity : Justice As The Basis For Identification And Social Exchange, Jeremiah Joel Kephart Martin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Entitativity is a perception concerning groups that distinguishes between perceiving groups as merely a collection of individuals and viewing them as a unified whole. The extent that groups are perceived to be entitative has been demonstrated to be related to greater attention to the moral conduct of the group as a whole. Drawing on both social identity perspectives and social exchange theory, I proposed a model arguing that organizational justice can result in employees viewing their organization as more entitative. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypothesized model, along with two theory-based alternative models (all random-intercepts cross-lagged …
Building And Sustaining Trust During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Lessons In P-12 Educational Leadership, C. Fred Engelhardt Jr.
Building And Sustaining Trust During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Lessons In P-12 Educational Leadership, C. Fred Engelhardt Jr.
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Trust has been called the “lubricant for social and interpersonal interactions” and “vital for individuals working together to create effective systems.” Organizations were challenged with considering how to adapt and innovate practices during COVID-19 in order to achieve their purpose and mission, continue their effectiveness towards that end, all while being cognizant of the health and safety of their members. Educational institutions were concurrently required to adopt remote instructional practices, adhere to strict safety and health measures, consider the effects of social-emotional health, while encouraging the ongoing learning of students. Courageous building principals and district leaders encouraged new practices, supported …

Abandoned Form : Secularity & Religion In The Eighteenth-Century British Novel, Kasey Waite
Abandoned Form : Secularity & Religion In The Eighteenth-Century British Novel, Kasey Waite
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Abandoned Form rereads the theory of the novel from a post-secular perspective. Since the early 1980’s, theorists such as Nancy Armstrong, Michael McKeon, and Ian Watt have argued that the novel mimics Western civilization’s journey from irrationality to rationality by embracing secular ideologies and abandoning religious ones. Conversely, Abandoned Form contends that the eighteenth-century novel form depends on an inseparable relationship between the religious and the secular. Rather than being independent of religious influence, the eighteenth-century novel utilizes a dialectical engagement of secular and religious forces to create its formal structures. Focusing on the form of the novel, rather than …

Between Person And Place : Modernist Ecopoetics In The Work Of Muriel Rukeyser And H.D, William F. Pattee
Between Person And Place : Modernist Ecopoetics In The Work Of Muriel Rukeyser And H.D, William F. Pattee
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This project examines ecopoetics as a means of decentering the industrial and urban tropes so heavily focused on in modernist studies. Through the ecopoetics of Muriel Rukeyser (1913-1980) and H.D. (1886-1961), the natural world and its influence on human subjects prove to be as emblematic of modern literature as artificial places and spaces are. While ecocritical theorists like Scott Knickerbocker and Andreas Weber point to the natural world as a paramount guide to navigating social and cultural dynamics, the presence of ecopoetics in modernism is a particularly significant field. Rukeyser’s long poem, The Book of the Dead (1936) puts ecopoetics …
Gestational Epigenetic Aging : Prenatal Influences And Early Life Associations, Emilia Pawlowski
Gestational Epigenetic Aging : Prenatal Influences And Early Life Associations, Emilia Pawlowski
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Development Origins of Health (DOHaD) evidence suggests that prenatal exposures have an important impact on offspring health throughout the life course. Environmental and psychosocial exposures during fetal development are associated with a range of health outcomes for offspring, and effects are often sex specific. One of the mechanisms which may explain differences in health outcomes is epigenetic alterations, which are the molecular mechanisms that regulate gene expression and can be modified during fetal development. Many studies have shown that psychosocial stress and social adversity can modulate epigenetic mechanisms and affect health. While there are several methods for measuring epigenetic alterations, …

A case-study approach focuses on a subset of students displaced by Hurricane Katrina, who enrolled at Syracuse University for the Fall 2005 semester. The study found that Katrina students who availed themselves of this opportunity resided in zip codes with relatively high household incomes when compared to non-Katrina transfer students and therefore were likely to be from households of higher socioeconomic status. The study also found that there was no international student representation in the sample …
Examining The Association Between Childhood Adversity And Later Life Cardiometabolic Diseases, Shreya Shrinivas
Examining The Association Between Childhood Adversity And Later Life Cardiometabolic Diseases, Shreya Shrinivas
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
ACEs stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences, which are traumatic or stressful events that occur in childhood before the age of 18 (Wisner, 2022). These experiences can include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; neglect; household dysfunction, such as parental separation, domestic violence, substance abuse, or incarceration; or exposure to community violence, racism, or discrimination. Research has shown that individuals who experience ACEs are at a higher risk for developing chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and mental health disorders later in life (Felitti, 2002). This is because ACEs can cause toxic stress, which is chronic activation of the stress …
The Gratitude Trap, Sean Chung
The Gratitude Trap, Sean Chung
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This paper explores the concept of gratitude and the many physical and psychological benefits. However, these benefits have caused us to overlook a trap that is associated with gratitude. Specifically, the paper focuses on two types of gratitude: propositional gratitude, which involves feeling grateful towards a generalized group or concept, and targeted gratitude, which is directed towards specific individuals or entities. The paper argues that there is a trap associated with both types of gratitude and can be invoked maliciously. This paper examines several examples of the trap and how it has been used maliciously in the past as well …
Mindfulness And The Making Of Meaning In The Lives Of Teachers, Matthew Mcnaught Livingston
Mindfulness And The Making Of Meaning In The Lives Of Teachers, Matthew Mcnaught Livingston
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation examines the effect of a Buddhist-based program of mindfulness, taught as part of the curriculum of a graduate program, on the relationship of teacher-practitioners with their work. Collecting data on the experiences of three cohorts over a nearly three-year period, this longitudinal case study examines the experiences of participants through the lens of the Mindfulness to Meaning Theory. The results of the study indicate that eudaimonic meaning, the importance of a life lived well, virtuously, and in a way that is perceived as suitable to one’s values, ideals and expectations (Ryff, 2014; Fowers, 2016) is important in both …

Olfaction And Puberty : The Study Of The Development And Migration Of The Gnrh-1ns And Their Migratory Partners The Olfactory Unsheathing Cells, Ed Zandro Moina Taroc
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Sexual development and puberty are two key developmental processes that are crucial for the propagation and evolution of species. The hormone Gonadotropin releasing hormone-1 (GnRH-1) is a key hormone in regulating both processes by controlling the hormonal Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal axis in the release of sex hormones (Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone) at the correct developmental time points initiate puberty and progress sexual development. A subset of hypothalamic neurons known as the GnRH-1 neurons (GnRH-1ns) release GnRH-1 in a pulsatile fashion during embryonic and post-natal development to specifically regulate these processes. The GnRH-1ns are an interesting group of neurons because they are formed in …
Dominican Women Experiencing Violence: Transnationalism, Gender, And The Search For Social Justice, Anyeline Mejia-Mcdonald
Dominican Women Experiencing Violence: Transnationalism, Gender, And The Search For Social Justice, Anyeline Mejia-Mcdonald
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
My dissertation contributes to the study of feminicide and violence against women through a unique analysis of what Cecilia Menjívar calls “multisided forms of violence”, to which I add the transnational experience. Focused on the Dominican Republic, this dissertation asks what are women’s experiences of multisided violence; how do they respond, react, and resist; and what effect does transnationalism play? Informed by 16 months of ethnography, utilizing participant observation, content analysis, and 50 semi-structured interviews, my findings demonstrate that, due to the failure of bureaucratic policies and mechanisms to guarantee women’s safety, survivors are forced to negotiate social, political, and …
Understandings Of Audience In First Year Composition, Mary Josephine Morgan
Understandings Of Audience In First Year Composition, Mary Josephine Morgan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
While understanding the concept of audience is an important step in learning to write, few studies have explored how student writers conceptualize audience in academic and nonacademic settings. This dissertation explores how college students enrolled in a first-year composition course conceptualize and operationalize audience and examines how the school context mediates students’ knowledge of audience. Nine students participated in the study, and data was collected from semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and relevant documents. Findings suggest that student conceptions of audience are more sophisticated and complex than previously thought. Additionally, students used a variety of strategies to analyze and adapt their …
Value Congruence And Employee Engagement: An Exploration Of Mechanisms, Laura Santiago
Value Congruence And Employee Engagement: An Exploration Of Mechanisms, Laura Santiago
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Employee engagement has been linked to a host of organizational outcomes such as turnover, commitment, and productivity, as well as employee outcomes such as depression, job satisfaction, and anxiety. As such, it is critical to understand how engagement can be fostered at work, or even predicted in applicants. Organizational culture has been linked to engagement, as well as person-job fit, but not enough research has been done on the link between organizational culture fit, or value congruence, and employee engagement. Specifically, not enough research has been done looking at why value congruence could lead to engagement. This study evaluates two …
Street-Level Goals And Teacher Discretion: An Exploration Of Antecedents And Consequences, Heasun Choi
Street-Level Goals And Teacher Discretion: An Exploration Of Antecedents And Consequences, Heasun Choi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Scholars have long noted that street-level administration faces significant challenges due to ambiguous work environments and limited resources. At the same time, street-level bureaucrats exhibit widely different behavioral patterns when using discretion while scholars continue to examine their motives. Despite a substantial body of literature on street-level bureaucracy, little attention has been given to the connections between goal dynamics and street-level discretion. This dissertation addresses this gap by conducting three empirical studies that combine a survey of teachers’ priorities, time allocation, and working conditions with administrative data on student achievement. The studies explore the antecedents and consequences of street-level goals …
Mindful Control Vs. Mindful Acceptance : An Experimental Evaluation Of The Acute Impact Of Intentions Guiding Mindfulness Practice On Psychological And Emotional Experiences, Eric Daniel Tifft
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Mindfulness meditation (MM) has gained attention from the mainstream media and scientific communities due to its benefits in ameliorating psychological suffering, aiding in the treatment of physical conditions, and promoting well-being. However, a growing body of research suggests that MM may also produce unintended, adverse effects. Research in emotion regulation suggests that how people use MM may be critical in understanding both the benefits and iatrogenic effects of such practices. Emotion regulation science suggests that efforts to avoid, suppress, or otherwise control unwanted internal experiences are ineffective long-term strategies and can backfire, thus potentiating psychological distress. Conversely, acceptance of difficult …
