Pet Loss And Grieving Strategies: A Systematic Review Of Literature, Ruth E. Cervantes Jan 2023

Pet Loss And Grieving Strategies: A Systematic Review Of Literature, Ruth E. Cervantes

Master's Projects

The impact that companion animals have on human lives has been explored in many aspects including therapy and emotional support. In some cases, these types of pets have been deemed necessary for pet owners with medical problems. However, pets are not only a medical necessity for some humans, but they are also companions, and most are included as family members. The loss of a pet often brings on intense grief that is not often acknowledged in the workforce. Bereavement leave for immediate family members is a benefit offered to employees, and as we will read in this literature review pet …

Cultural Perspectives In Pain And Palliative Care, Loan Lagué Jan 2023

Cultural Perspectives In Pain And Palliative Care, Loan Lagué

Master's Projects

Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) patients are constantly challenged by the different levels on which lack of cultural competency or bias occurs in healthcare. This literature review focuses on the healthcare providers’ experiences when providing pain and palliative care to CALD populations and explores the challenges that may result in health inequalities. A review of current literature was conducted using PubMed, CINHAL, Sage Journals, Ovid, and Science Direct electronic databases. Sixteen published articles between 2015-2023 were reviewed. Findings from this review identified factors that induce poor quality palliative, pain, and end-of-life (EOL) care among culturally diverse groups. Improving quality of …

Implicit Racial Bias: A Human Computer Interaction Study Using Eye Tracker, Wenfan Zhang Jan 2023

Implicit Racial Bias: A Human Computer Interaction Study Using Eye Tracker, Wenfan Zhang

Master's Projects

Contemporary Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research has an increasing emphasis on reducing ethnicity bias. The study presents a new method to explore and reduce biases using detailed experiments. The experimental procedure involves presenting participants with images of ethnically diverse characters across three conditions. The study's results significantly illuminate ethnicity bias in character selection dynamics. Participants exposed to targeted training interventions displayed a significant shift in preferences for characters engaged in intellectual activities. Notably, this shift was influenced by the ethnicity of the characters involved. Interestingly, the eye-tracking data unveiled distinct patterns of cognitive load, characterized by slower response times and greater …

Master's Projects

This sentiments analysis study presents a methodical approach to predict the 2024 Indian Prime Minister Election. Data collected spanning from 2020 to 2023 from Twitter using hashtags such as IndianPMElection2024 and on topics such as the revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, the Farm Bill, and the Digital India initiative, form the core of this research. We utilized a combination of sentiment extraction tools-namely, the NLP Town's Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT)-based multilingual uncased sentiment model, Valance Aware Dictionary for Sentiment Reasoning (VADER), and TextBlob. Additionally, we used a well-established machine learning model Naive Bayes, deep …

Performance Gaps And Opportunities For Growth: Addressing Remote Learning In Nevada, Anna Dreibelbis-Colquitt Jan 2023

Performance Gaps And Opportunities For Growth: Addressing Remote Learning In Nevada, Anna Dreibelbis-Colquitt

BYU Education & Law Journal

Although education is not a fundamental right under the United States Constitution, it is nonetheless deemed as “perhaps the most important function of state and local governments.” The importance of education is reinforced through the Nevada Constitution. Specifically, Article 11 states that “[t]he legislature shall provide for a uniform system of common schools,” which is seen through the public school system. However, this ‘uniform’ system drastically changed two years ago with the surge in online learning.

Joseph Smith’S Education And Intellect As Described In Documentary Sources, Brian C. Hales Jan 2023

Joseph Smith’S Education And Intellect As Described In Documentary Sources, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Although Joseph Smith has been credited with “approximately seven full school years” of district schooling, further research supports that his education consisted of basic instruction in “reading, writing and the ground rules of arithmetic” comprising “less than two years of formal schooling.” The actual number of terms he experienced in common schools in upstate New York is probably less critical since the curricula in district schools did not then teach creative writing, composition, or extemporaneous speaking. If Joseph Smith learned how to compose and dictate a book, extracurricular activities would likely have been the training source. Six of those can …

Diving Into Correctional Education Program Research: A Systematic Review, Evelyn Roehn Jan 2023

Diving Into Correctional Education Program Research: A Systematic Review, Evelyn Roehn

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the last three decades, there has been a growing interest in correctional education programming and its effects on the recidivism rates of offenders. Research has concluded that programs such as general education equivalency (GED), college credit, and trade/vocational skill-building work to reduce recidivism rates among offenders. Although current research is widely accepted among scholars, several questions remain. 1) How is recidivism defined, and how does the definition change the rates? 2) How are researchers addressing selection bias in their study, and what impact does this have on their findings? 3) How are inmates with learning disabilities and language barriers …

Critical Race Theory & Abolition: Disrupting Racial Policy Whiplash In Teacher Education, Edwin Mayorga, Jennifer Bradley Jan 2023

Critical Race Theory & Abolition: Disrupting Racial Policy Whiplash In Teacher Education, Edwin Mayorga, Jennifer Bradley

Educational Studies Faculty Works

In 2021, like far too many states around the U.S., educators in Pennsylvania have been forced to wade through a myriad of attacks against educating students for liberation and justice under the guise of combating Critical Race Theory (CRT). There is a fair amount of “racial policy whiplash” in educators, as many states are simultaneously incorporating culturally sustaining and antiracist pedagogies into their teacher certification requirements. We explore this racial context as teacher educators organizing in a racially and ethnically diverse department at a small liberal arts college (SLAC). We begin by naming our theoretical North Star, guided by CRT, …

The Effect Of Patient Reminders On Patient Engagement With Digital Preoperative Education, Christine Reger Jan 2023

The Effect Of Patient Reminders On Patient Engagement With Digital Preoperative Education, Christine Reger

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Preoperative education improves surgical outcomes (Burgess et al., 2019). The current standard of care for patients undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery is verbal preoperative education at the office visit supplemented with printed material. Utilizing digital education customized to the surgical procedure is an effective way to improve patient knowledge, engagement, satisfaction, and health outcomes and should be integrated into healthcare guidelines (Golinelli et al., 2020). Our healthcare institution partnered with Independence Health’s Quil to provide patients with access to digital tools for education and preparation, with a goal for patients to have a better experience before and after surgical procedures and …

Threat And Enhancement: Strength Of Gamer Identity Moderates Affective Response To Messages About Gaming., Teresa Lynch, Matthew R. Erxleben, Gregory P. Perreault

School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications

Advancing hypotheses derived from social identity theory, we investigated the influence of gamer identity affiliation on affective responses to identity threats and enhancements. Participants viewed a message that either devalued (i.e., threatened) or elevated (i.e., enhanced) the status of gamers when associating them with a mass shooting event. Relative to a control condition that neither threatened nor enhanced identity, our data demonstrated that gamer identity affiliation moderated affect. Specifically, greater gamer affiliation increased negative affect experienced after a threatening message. By contrast, greater gamer affiliation increased positive affect and reduced negative affect experienced after an enhancement message. Analyses of participants’ …

Bolstering Resistance To Misinformation Through K-12 Education, Allison Johnson Jan 2023

Bolstering Resistance To Misinformation Through K-12 Education, Allison Johnson

Undergraduate Public Policy Capstone Projects

Misinformation online and in news media is a problem because it degrades truth and hinders legitimate democratic discourse. As misinformation becomes more prevalent, we need to start finding ways to limit the extent of the problem. To do so, I recommend a policy solution based on inoculation theory. Inoculation theory, as the name suggests, uses the metaphor of a vaccine. When receiving the flu shot, we get a weakened dose of the virus, which in turn helps us to create antibodies and later be more effective at fighting the real flu. In this instance, people are exposed to weakened doses …

"Does This Make Sense?": The Effect Of Congruent Guise In Regional Accent On Grammatical Acceptability Judgments, Nour Kayali Jan 2023

"Does This Make Sense?": The Effect Of Congruent Guise In Regional Accent On Grammatical Acceptability Judgments, Nour Kayali

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This study seeks to unite sociophonetic speech perception and syntax research by presenting participants with congruent or incongruent social expectations during a structural grammaticality judgement task. Participants completed a between-subjects matched guise survey with place-based grammatical structures spoken in either a congruent place-based, local accent or a nonlocal accent. Place-based structures are consistently rated more acceptable in the local accent than the nonlocal. These results suggest that judgment of grammaticality results from an interplay of sociocultural expectations with accent and sentence structure. Judgement of structural grammaticality is not independent of social expectation.

Based on a comprehensive review and critical analysis of the literature regarding the nutritional concerns of female athletes, conducted by experts in the field and selected members of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), the following conclusions represent the official Position of the Society: 1. Female athletes have unique and unpredictable hormone profiles, which influence their physiology and nutritional needs across their lifespan. To understand how perturbations in these hormones affect the individual, we recommend that female athletes of reproductive age should track their hormonal status (natural, hormone driven) against training and recovery to determine their individual patterns and …

Cityscape Under The Gaze Of Migrant Women : The Reimagination Of Urban World In Vietnamese Independent Films, Cam Giang Hoang

Journal of Urban Culture Research

In Vietnam, since the Reform era (1986) and the government’s firm urbanization policy, replacing the pre-1986 discourse of the countryside as the Garden of Eden, a myth of the city as a place of endless pleasure has been gradually built up in mass media. As a result, the urban spectacle has become the ideal symbol of the speed of development, national strength, and masculinity in state-sponsored and commercial movies/dramas. Meanwhile, through the ‘slow cinema,’ independent female directors such as Siu Pham, Nguyen Hoang Diep, Bui Kim Quy, Pham Hoang Minh Thy, and Pham Nhue Giang have questioned the ‘urban fantasy’ …
